INSPECTION & VERIFICATION
- Verify customer's original problem by operating system in question. Inspect vehicle for any obvious electrical component wiring or connector damage. Inspect connectors for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Check related fuses for system in question.
- Inspect 16-pin Data Link Connector (DLC) pins for damage. (Scheme 3) The DLC is located below driver's side of instrument panel, right of steering column. If pins are okay, go to next step. If pins are damaged, repair as necessary and proceed to next step.
- If problem is still present after performing inspection, connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to DLC. Select vehicle to be tested from NGS tester menu. If NGS tester does not communicate with vehicle, ensure program card is properly installed. Check NGS tester cable connections and ensure ignition is on. If NGS tester still does not communicate with vehicle, go to TEST F: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION under TESTING. If NGS tester communicates with vehicle, perform data link diagnostic procedure. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST.

DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST
Note. When performing Data Link Diagnostic Test, the NGS tester may display BUS circuits 4-PB9 and 5-PB9 as circuits No. 914 and 915. The NGS tester may also display ISO circuit 8-CF29 as circuit No. 70.
- Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC), if not already connected. Select vehicle to be tested from NGS tester menu.
- Turn ignition on. Rotate dial on NGS tester to menu item DIAGNOSTIC DATA LINK and press trigger. A test will be performed on the BUS (circuits 4-PB9 and 5-PB9) for the module communications network and the ISO 9141 communication link (circuit 8-CF29).
- If NGS tester displays CKT 4-PB9 (+) = SYSTEM PASSED and CKT 5-PB9 (-) = SYSTEM PASSED, module communications network is okay. If NGS tester displays CKT 8-CF29 = SYSTEM PASSED, ISO 9141 communication link is operating properly. Return to article that directed you here and continue diagnosis.
- If NGS tester does not display CKT 4-PB9 (+) = SYSTEM PASSED, CKT 5-PB9 (-) = SYSTEM PASSED and CKT 8-CF29 = SYSTEM PASSED, perform the following as applicable. If no response from NGS tester, go to TEST F: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION under TESTING. If NGS tester displays CKT 70 = 00000001, go to TEST A: ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER under TESTING. If NGS tester displays CKT 914 = 00000003, go to TEST E: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION - BUS LINK under TESTING. If NGS tester displays CKT 915 = 00000003, go to TEST E: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION - BUS LINK under TESTING. If module in question is NO RESPONSE/NOT EQUIPPED, go to SYMPTOM INDEX table to continue diagnosis. If module in question is NO RESPONSE ON CKT 914 (BUS +), go to SYMPTOM INDEX table to continue diagnosis. If module in question is NO RESPONSE ON CKT 915 (BUS -), go to SYMPTOM INDEX table To continue diagnosis.

TESTING
Note. Always check module power and ground circuits prior to replacing a control module. See appropriate wiring diagram in DATA LINK CONNECTORS, GROUND DISTRIBUTION or POWER DISTRIBUTION section in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in the WIRING DIAGRAMS section.
TEST A: ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect ABS module connector located in left rear corner of engine compartment. Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair connector as necessary and retest system for normal operation. If connector is okay, go to next step.
- Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 11 (White/Violet wire) at ABS module connector. (Scheme 2) If zero volts is indicated, go to next step. If any voltage is indicated, repair short to power in White/Violet wire between DLC and ABS module. Retest system for normal operation.
- Measure resistance of White/Violet wire between terminal No. 11 at ABS module connector and terminal No. 7 at Data Link Connector (DLC). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in White/Violet wire between ABS module connector and DLC. Retest system for normal operation.
- Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 11 (White/Violet wire) at ABS module connector. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or more, replace ABS module. Retest system for normal operation. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, repair short to ground in White/Violet wire. Retest system for normal operation.

TEST B: PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PATS module connector C1968 located behind glove box. Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair connector as necessary and retest system for normal operation. If connector is okay, go to next step.
- Measure resistance between terminal No. 5 (Gray/Red wire) at PATS module connector C1968 and terminal No. 2 (Gray/Violet wire) at Data Link Connector (DLC). (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 3). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 4). If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
- Disconnect Green 14-pin in-line connector C140 located behind left side of instrument panel. Measure resistance between terminal No. 9 (Gray wire) at connector C140 and terminal No. 2 (Gray/Violet wire) at DLC. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 4). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair open in Gray/Red wire between connector C140 and PATS module connector. Retest system for normal operation. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Gray or Gray/Violet wire between connector C140 and DLC. Retest system for normal operation.
- Measure resistance between terminal No. 4 (Blue/Red wire) at PATS module connector C1968 and terminal No. 10 (Blue/White wire) at DLC. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PATS module and retest system for normal operation. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
- Disconnect Green 14-pin in-line connector C140 located behind left side of instrument panel. Measure resistance between terminal No. 2 (Blue wire) at connector C140 and terminal No. 10 (Blue/White wire) at DLC. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 4). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair open in Blue/Red wire between connector C140 and PATS module connector. Retest system for normal operation. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Blue or Blue/White wire between connector C140 and DLC. Retest system for normal operation.

TEST C: POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect NGS tester. Disconnect PCM connector located in right side of engine compartment, on firewall. Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair connector as necessary and retest system for normal operation. If connector is okay, go to next step.
- Measure resistance between terminal No. 16 (Gray wire) at PCM connector and terminal No. 2 (Gray/Violet wire) at Data Link Connector (DLC). (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 5). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 4). If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
- Disconnect 42-pin connector C3001 located near left strut tower. Measure resistance between terminal No. 4 (Gray wire) at connector C3001 and terminal No. 2 (Gray/Violet wire) at DLC. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 6). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair open in Gray wire between connector C3001 and PCM. Retest system for normal operation. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Gray or Gray/Violet wire between connector C3001 and DLC. Retest system for normal operation.
- Measure resistance between terminal No. 15 (Blue wire) at PCM connector and terminal No. 10 (Blue/White wire) at DLC. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 5). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 6). If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
- Disconnect 42-pin connector C3001 located near left strut tower. Measure resistance between terminal No. 12 (Blue wire) at connector C3001 and terminal No. 10 (Blue/White wire) at DLC. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 6). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair open in Blue wire between connector C3001 and PCM. Retest system for normal operation. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Blue or Blue/White wire between connector C3001 and DLC. Retest system for normal operation.
- Measure resistance of White/Blue wire between terminal No. 13 (White/Blue wire) at PCM connector and terminal No. 13 at DLC. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM and retest system for normal operation. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
- Disconnect 42-pin connector C3001 located near left strut tower. Measure resistance of White/Blue wire between terminal No. 2 at connector C3001 and terminal No. 13 at DLC. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair open in White/Blue wire between connector C3001 and PCM. Retest system for normal operation. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in White/Blue wire between connector C3001 and DLC. Retest system for normal operation.

TEST D: CENTRAL TIMER MODULE (CTM) DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER
- Turn ignition off. Remove and inspect fuse No. 1 (80-amp) from power distribution center in engine compartment. Replace fuse as necessary. Retest system for normal operation. If fuse blows again, check for short to ground. Repair as necessary and retest system for normal operation. If fuse is okay, reinstall fuse and go to next step.
- Disconnect CTM 20-pin connector C23 located behind left side of instrument panel at fuse block. Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair connector as necessary and retest system for normal operation. If connector is okay, go to next step.
- Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 18 at CTM connector C23. (Scheme 7) If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, replace fuse block. Retest system for normal operation.
- Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 16 at CTM connector C23. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace CTM. Retest system for normal operation. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace fuse block. Retest system for normal operation.

TEST E: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION - BUS LINK
- Turn ignition on. Repeat DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK DIAGNOSTICS. Proceed as follows. If NGS tester displays NO RESPONSE ON CKT 914 for all modules and 00000003 for circuit No. 914, go to next step. If NGS tester displays NO RESPONSE ON CKT 915 for all modules and 00000003 for circuit No. 915, go to step 12). If NGS tester displays PATS: NO RESPONSE ON CKT 914 or 915, go to TEST B: PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER. If NGS tester displays PCM: NO RESPONSE ON CKT 914 or 915, go to TEST C: POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER. If NGS displays any other message, go to SYMPTOM TESTING under COMMUNICATION NETWORK DIAGNOSTICS. Perform appropriate test.
- Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 2 (Gray/Violet wire) at Data Link Connector (DLC). (Scheme 1) If any voltage is indicated, go to next step. If zero volts is indicated, go to step 7).
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) module connector C1968 located behind glove box. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 2 (Gray/Violet wire) at DLC. If any voltage is indicated, go to next step. If zero volts is indicated, replace PATS module. Retest system for normal operation.
- Disconnect Green 14-pin in-line connector C140 located behind left side of instrument panel. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 2 (Gray/Violet wire) at DLC. If any voltage is indicated, go to next step. If zero volts is indicated, repair short to power in Gray/Red wire between PATS module and connector C140. Retest system for normal operation.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector located in right side of engine compartment, on firewall. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 2 (Gray/Violet wire) at DLC. If any voltage is indicated, go to next step. If zero volts is indicated, replace PCM and retest system for normal operation.
- Disconnect 42-pin connector C3001 located near left strut tower. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 2 (Gray/Violet wire) at DLC. If any voltage is indicated, repair short to power in Gray or Gray/Violet wire between DLC, connector C3001 and connector C140. Retest system for normal operation. If zero volts is indicated, repair short to power in Gray wire between PCM and connector C3001. Retest system for normal operation.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect NGS tester. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 2 (Gray/Violet wire) at DLC. (Scheme 1) If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or more, go to TEST C: POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER.
- Disconnect Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) module connector C1968 located behind glove box. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 2 (Gray/Violet wire) at DLC. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10,000 or more, replace PATS module. Retest system for normal operation.
- Disconnect Green 14-pin in-line connector C140 located behind left side of instrument panel. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 2 (Gray/Violet wire) at DLC. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or more, repair short to ground in Gray/Red wire between PATS module and connector C140. Retest system for normal operation.
- Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector located in right side of engine compartment, on firewall. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 2 (Gray/Violet wire) at DLC. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or more, replace PCM and retest system for normal operation.
- Disconnect 42-pin connector C3001 located near left strut tower. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 2 (Gray/Violet wire) at DLC. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, repair short to ground in Gray or Gray/Violet wire between DLC, connector C3001 and connector C140. Retest system for normal operation. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or more, repair short to ground in Gray wire between PCM and connector C3001. Retest system for normal operation.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect NGS tester. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 10 (Blue/White wire) at Data Link Connector (DLC). (Scheme 1) If any voltage is indicated, go to next step. If zero volts is indicated, go to step 17).
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) module connector C1968 located behind glove box. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 10 (Blue/White wire) at DLC. If any voltage is indicated, go to next step. If zero volts is indicated, replace PATS module. Retest system for normal operation.
- Disconnect Green 14-pin in-line connector C140 located behind left side of instrument panel. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 10 (Blue/White wire) at DLC. If any voltage is indicated, go to next step. If zero volts is indicated, repair short to power in Blue/Red wire between PATS module and connector C140. Retest system for normal operation.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector located in right side of engine compartment, on firewall. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 10 (Blue/White wire) at DLC. If any voltage is indicated, go to next step. If zero volts is indicated, replace PCM and retest system for normal operation.
- Disconnect 42-pin connector C3001 located near left strut tower. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 10 (Blue/White wire) at DLC. If any voltage is indicated, repair short to power in Blue or Blue/White wire between DLC, connector C3001 and connector C140. Retest system for normal operation. If zero volts is indicated, repair short to power in Blue wire between PCM and connector C3001. Retest system for normal operation.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect NGS tester. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 10 (Blue/White wire) at DLC. (Scheme 1) If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or more, go to TEST C: POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) DOES NOT RESPOND TO NGS TESTER.
- Disconnect Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) module connector C1968 located behind glove box. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 10 (Blue/White wire) at DLC. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10,000 or more, replace PATS module. Retest system for normal operation.
- Disconnect Green 14-pin in-line connector C140 located behind left side of instrument panel. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 10 (Blue/White wire) at DLC. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or more, repair short to ground in Blue/Red wire between PATS module and connector C140. Retest system for normal operation.
- Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector located in right side of engine compartment, on firewall. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 10 (Blue/White wire) at DLC. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or more, replace PCM and retest system for normal operation.
- Disconnect 42-pin connector C3001 located near left strut tower. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 10 (Blue/White wire) at DLC. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, repair short to ground in Blue or Blue/White wire between DLC, connector C3001 and connector C140. Retest system for normal operation. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or more, repair short to ground in Blue wire between PCM and connector C3001. Retest system for normal operation.
TEST F: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION
- Turn ignition off. Inspect NGS tester connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary and retest system for normal operation. If connector is okay, go to next step.
- Inspect Data Link Connector (DLC) for physical damage, bent terminals or corrosion. Repair as necessary and retest system for normal operation. If connector is okay, go to next step.
- Remove and inspect fuse No. 28 (30-amp) from instrument panel fuse block. If fuse is blown, go to next step. If fuse is okay, reinstall fuse and go to step 5).
- Replace fuse and retest system for normal operation. Recheck fuse. If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is blown, repair short to ground in circuit 29-PB9 (Orange wire) between instrument panel fuse block and DLC. Retest system for normal operation.
- Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 16 (Orange wire) at DLC. (Scheme 1) If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair circuit 29-PB9 (Orange wire) between instrument panel fuse block and DLC. Retest system for normal operation.
- Measure resistance between ground and terminals No. 4 (Black wire) and No. 5 (Black/Orange wire) at DLC. If both resistance readings are less than 5 ohms, repair or replace NGS tester. Retest system for normal operation. If any resistance reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black wire or Black/Orange wire between ground and DLC. Retest system for normal operation.
