KICKDOWN CONTROL CABLE ADJUSTMENTS
Note. Kickdown control cable can self-adjust .5-1.5" (13-38 mm) after installation by depressing accelerator pedal to floor. No adjustment is required, but cable must be locked in adjusted position manually. Cable must be adjusted whenever it is removed or replaced.
INITIAL ADJUSTMENT (A4LD)
If cable has been replaced or removed, adjust kickdown cable. From under the hood, depress the D-flat while pulling the cable conduit out from cable body. (Scheme 49) Adjust cable by depressing accelerator pedal to floor.
Note. If transmission kickdown is difficult to achieve at wide open throttle, ensure aftermarket floor mats have not been installed or mispositioned behind accelerator pedal, thus restricting full pedal movement.

CABLE ADJUSTMENT WITH ENGINE OFF (AOD)
- T.V. control cable is set and locked to its proper length during initial assembly by pushing in locking tab at throttle body end of cable assembly. When tab is unlocked, cable is released for adjustment. Under normal circumstances, it should not be necessary to alter or readjust initial setting of T.V. control cable.
- Set parking brake and put selector in "N". DO NOT put selector in "P". On F150/250 and Bronco with 5.0L engine, remove cable linkage protective cover. On all vehicles, ensure throttle lever is resting against idle stop. DO NOT adjust idle stop.
- Verify cable routing is free of sharp bends or pressure points, and cable operates freely. Unlock locking tab at throttle body end by pushing up from below, and prying up the rest of the way to free cable.
- Install a retention spring with about a 10-lb. (4.5 kg) force to hold T.V. control lever in idle position (to rear of travel). Attach spring(s) to transmission T.V. lever, and hook rear of spring to transmission case. If necessary, use 2 V8 throttle return springs to hold T.V. lever back.
- With T.V. cable locking tab unlocked and retention spring in place, rotate transmission outer T.V. lever 10-30 degrees and return slowly. Push down locking tab until flush. Remove retention spring(s) from transmission lever.
T.V. PRESSURE CHECK & ADJUSTMENT WITH ENGINE ON (AOD)
- Attach T.V. Pressure Gauge (T86L-70002-A) to T.V. port on transmission. Remove cover from T.V. cable linkage. Insert tapered end of T.V. Cable Control Pressure Gauge Adjuster (T86L-70332-A) between crimped slug on end of cable and plastic cable fitting attached to throttle lever. (Scheme 50)
- Ensure adjuster is pushed in as far as it will go. Run engine until normal operating temperature is reached. Transmission fluids temperature should be 100-150°F (37-65°C). DO NOT perform T.V. pressure check if transmission fluid is too cold or too hot to touch.
- Set park brake, and shift transmission to Neutral. T.V. pressure should be 26-36 psi (1.75-2.53 kg/cm 2 ). For best transmission function, set T.V. pressure as close as possible to mean pressure. If T.V. pressure is out of range, unlock T.V. cable locking tab at throttle body. (Scheme 50)
- The adjuster preload spring should cause adjusting slider to move away from throttle body, causing T.V. pressure to increase. Push on the slider from behind bracket until T.V. pressure reaches 31 psi (2.1 kg/cm 2 ). While still holding slider, push locking tab down as far as it will go to lock slider into position.
- Remove gauge adjuster, allowing cable to return to normal idle position. With engine still idling in Neutral, T.V. pressure should be at or near zero. If pressure is not as specified, readjust.

VACUUM REGULATOR VALVE (VRV) ADJUSTMENTS
All 7.3L V8 diesel A/T vehicles have a VRV. VRV is mounted on the left side of fuel injection pump and provides transmission with vacuum signal to control shift points. Signal strength is determined by VRV.
NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH ADJUSTMENTS
Note. AOD and A4LD switches are not adjustable. Use Neutral Start Switch Socket (T74P-77247-A) to replace switch. If any other socket is used, damage to switch may occur. Information for neutral safety switch on E4OD transmission is not available from manufacturer.
FUEL INJECTION PUMP LEVER (FIPL) SENSOR ADJUSTMENTS
Note. Checking and adjusting FIPL requires a Star tester.
