MODULE APPLICATIONS

DESCRIPTION

The body control computer system consists of a combination of modules that communicate over the Chrysler Collision Detection (CCD) bus system. Through the CCD bus, information related to the operation of vehicle components and circuits is relayed to the appropriate system module(s). Each module receives the same information about a component. This reduces the complexity of vehicle wiring and size of wiring harness.

Body control computer systems covered in this article and BODY CONTROL COMPUTER TESTS are as follows: automatic door locks, chime functions, compass/temperature module, courtesy lights, door ajar system, electronic instrument cluster, Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC), headlight doors, headlight time delay, illuminated entry system, intermittent wipers, (ignition) key-in light system, mechanical instrument cluster (warning lights), message center, Overhead Travel Information System (OTIS), Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) system and travel module.

Using Chrysler's Diagnostic Readout Box (DRB), body fault codes are accessed through CCD bus Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under left side of dash or next to center console. (Scheme 57)

Scheme 57: DESCRIPTION

The body control computer, also called Body Control Module (BCM), is located behind right side kick panel. BCM stores odometer information for electronic instrument cluster display and provides power and ground for a variety of systems.

BCM is the only module that has the capability of providing both "bias" and "termination" on the CCD bus system. See CCD BUS SYSTEM. Systems are monitored by BCM through voltage drops.

Vehicle may be equipped with either a premium or base model BCM. Premium BCM can be identified by the presence of either the Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) system, Overhead Travel Information System (OTIS), or both.

Base body control computer is used on vehicles with a mechanical instrument cluster and no EVIC.

TEST 31A - WIPER MOTOR HIGH SPEED OPERATION

Note. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For wiring diagrams, see WIRING DIAGRAMS . Perform TEST VER-1 after each repair.

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting any module connector.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Turn wiper switch off. Ensure all doors are closed and courtesy lamps are off. Wait one minute. Gain access to Body Control Module (BCM). BCM is located behind right kick panel. Go to next step.
  2. Using DRB in ohmmeter mode, backprobe BCM Bone connector terminal No. 16 (Dark Green/Red wire). If resistance is not 1100-1400 ohms, go to «TEST 33E»(ref-10844-S13053232352000111300000). If resistance is 1100-1400 ohms, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If wipers operate at one speed continuously without stopping in park regardless of switch position, go to TEST 31B. If wipers do not operate at one speed continuously without stopping in park regardless of switch position, go to next step.
  4. Using DRB, actuate wiper motor low speed then high speed. If wiper motor actuates in both tests at same speed, go to «TEST 32B»(ref-10844-S40031437542000111300000). If wiper motor does not actuate in both tests at same speed, go to next step.
  5. Stop actuation test. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect multifunction switch connector. Connector is located on upper part of steering column, behind trim cover. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Go to next step.
  6. Connect jumper wire between multifunction switch terminals No. 1 (Dark Green/Red wire) and No. 3 (Dark Blue wire). If wipers operate properly in high speed mode, replace multifunction switch. If wipers do not operate properly in high speed mode, go to next step.
  7. Remove jumper wire and reconnect multifunction switch. With wiper switch still in HIGH speed mode, check if wipers are operating in LOW speed mode. If wipers are not operating in low speed mode, replace BCM. If wipers are operating in low speed mode, go to next step.
  8. Ensure BCM connectors are connected. Using DRB in voltmeter mode, backprobe BCM connector terminal No. 18 (Violet wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to step 10). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  9. Disconnect BCM Bone connector. If voltage is more than 10 volts, repair short to voltage in Violet wire. If voltage is less than 10 volts, replace BCM.
  10. Remove high/low wiper relay (relay No. 10) from Power Distribution Center (PDC). PDC is located on left front fender apron. see scheme 11 Using DRB in voltmeter mode, check voltage on high/low wiper relay connector terminal "C" (Violet wire). If voltage is less than 0.2 volt, repair open Violet wire between relay and BCM. If voltage is more than 0.2 volt, go to next step.
  11. Using DRB in voltmeter mode, check voltage on high/low wiper relay connector terminal "A" (Dark Blue wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Dark Blue wire between relay and fuse No. 10 on junction block. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  12. Disconnect wiper motor connector. Connector is located on engine compartment firewall, just right of power brake booster. Connect jumper wire between high/low wiper relay connector terminals "B" (Light Green/Black wire) and "D" (Red/Yellow wire). Using DRB in voltmeter mode, check voltage on wiper motor connector terminal No. 2 (Red/Yellow wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Red/Yellow wire between high/low wiper relay and wiper motor. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace wiper motor.

TEST 32A - WIPER MOTOR LOW SPEED OPERATION

Note. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For wiring diagrams, see WIRING DIAGRAMS . Perform TEST VER-1 after each repair.

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting any module connector.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Turn wiper switch off. Ensure all doors are closed and courtesy lamps are off. Wait one minute. Gain access to Body Control Module (BCM). BCM is located behind right kick panel. Go to next step.
  2. Using DRB in ohmmeter mode, backprobe BCM Bone connector terminal No. 16 (Dark Green/Red wire). If resistance is not 1100-1400 ohms, go to «TEST 33E»(ref-10844-S13053232352000111300000). If resistance is 1100-1400 ohms, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If wipers operate at one speed continuously without stopping in park regardless of switch position, go to «TEST 31B»(ref-10844-S15455097162000111300000). If wipers do not operate at one speed continuously without stopping in park regardless of switch position, go to next step.
  4. Using DRB, actuate wiper motor low speed then high speed. If wiper motor actuates in both tests at same speed, go to TEST 32B. If wiper motor does not actuate in both tests at same speed, go to next step.
  5. Stop actuation test. Using DRB, actuate wiper motor low speed. If wiper operates in low speed mode, replace multifunction switch. If wiper does not operate in low speed, go to next step.
  6. With DRB still actuating low speed, if wiper motor is not operating in high speed, go to «TEST 32D»(ref-10844-S16387192552000111300000). If wiper motor is operating in high speed, go to next step.
  7. Stop actuation test. Remove high/low wiper relay (relay No. 10) from Power Distribution Center (PDC). PDC is located on left front fender apron. (Scheme 57) Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance between high/low wiper relay terminals "B" and "D". If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace high/low wiper relay. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  8. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Gain access to Body Control Module (BCM). BCM is located behind right kick panel. Disconnect BCM Bone connector. Using DRB in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of BCM Bone connector terminal No. 18 (Violet wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Violet wire. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  9. Remove on/off wiper relay (relay No. 6). Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance between BCM Bone connector terminals No. 1 (Dark Green/Yellow wire) and No. 18 (Violet wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short between Dark Green/Yellow wire and Violet wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace BCM.

TEST 32D - WIPER MOTOR LOW SPEED OPERATION

Note. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For wiring diagrams, see WIRING DIAGRAMS . Perform TEST VER-1 after each repair.

  1. Stop actuation test. Remove on/off wiper relay (relay No. 6) and high/low wiper relay (relay No. 10) from Power Distribution Center (PDC). PDC is located on left front fender apron. see scheme 11 Connect jumper wire between on/off wiper relay terminal "D" (Red/Dark Blue wire) and high/low wiper relay terminal "E" (Brown/White wire). If wiper motor operates in low speed mode, replace high/low wiper relay. If wiper motor does not operate in low speed mode, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect wiper motor connector. Connector is located on engine compartment firewall, just right of power brake booster. Using DRB in voltmeter mode, check voltage on wiper motor connector terminal No. 4 (Brown/White wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Brown/White wire. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace wiper motor.

TEST 33A - WIPER MOTOR INTERMITTENT SPEED OPERATION

Note. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For wiring diagrams, see WIRING DIAGRAMS . Perform TEST VER-1 after each repair.

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting any module connector.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Turn wiper switch off. Ensure all doors are closed and courtesy lamps are off. Wait one minute. Gain access to Body Control Module (BCM). BCM is located behind right kick panel. Go to next step.
  2. Using DRB in ohmmeter mode, backprobe BCM Bone connector terminal No. 16 (Dark Green/Red wire). If resistance is not 1100-1400 ohms, go to «TEST 33E»(ref-10844-S13053232352000111300000) . If resistance is 1100-1400 ohms, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Move wiper switch through all 6 different delay (intermittent speed) levels. If all delay levels do not fail, go to step 8). If all delay levels fail, go to next step.
  4. Turn wiper switch to OFF position. If wiper motor does not stop running, go to TEST 33B. If wiper motor stops running, go to next step.
  5. Check if wipers park properly in OFF position. If wipers do not park properly in OFF position, go to «TEST 33C»(ref-10844-S37179149402000111300000) . If wipers park properly in OFF position, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Body Control Module (BCM) Bone connector. BCM is located behind right kick panel. Move wiper switch to any delay position. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Go to next step.
  7. Using DRB in voltmeter mode, check voltage on BCM Bone connector terminal No. 16 (Dark Green/Red wire) If voltage is less than 10 volts, replace multifunction switch. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace BCM.
  8. Using DRB, read wiper switch status. Move wiper switch from OFF position through all 6 different delay levels. If DRB voltage does not increase proportionally between INTRMT WIPE 0V and 5V (volts), replace multifunction switch. If DRB voltage does increase proportionally, go to next step.
  9. Move wiper switch to OFF position. Using DRB, read wiper switch status. If DRB displays INTRMT WIPE 0V, replace body control module. If DRB does not display INTRMT WIPE 0V, go to next step.
  10. Disconnect multifunction switch connector. Connector is located on upper part of steering column, behind trim cover. Using DRB read wiper switch status. If DRB displays INTRMT WIPE 0V, replace multifunction switch. If DRB does not display INTRMT WIPE 0V, go to next step.
  11. Disconnect BCM Bone connector. Using DRB in voltmeter mode, check voltage on BCM Bone connector terminal No. 16 (Dark Green/Red wire). If voltage is more than 0.2 volt, repair short to voltage in Dark Green/Red wire. If voltage is less than 0.2 volt, replace BCM.

TEST 34A - WASHER PUMP OPERATION

Note. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For wiring diagrams, see WIRING DIAGRAMS . Perform TEST VER-1 after each repair.

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting any module connector.
  1. Ensure washer fluid reservoir is full. Check windshield washer pump operation. If washer pump does not operate, go to step 3). If washer pump operates, turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Body Control Module (BCM) Bone connector. BCM is located behind right kick panel. Go to next step. CAUTION: DO NOT keep washer button pressed longer than necessary to test for voltage. Damage to washer pump may occur.
  2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using DRB in voltmeter mode, while pressing windshield washer button on end of wiper/washer stalk, check voltage on BCM Bone connector terminal No. 10 (Brown wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Brown wire between BCM and switch. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace BCM.
  3. If wipers operate in step 1), go to TEST 34B. If wipers do not operate, turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Body Control Module (BCM) Bone connector and multifunction switch connector. BCM is located behind right kick panel. Multifunction switch connector is located on upper part of steering column, behind trim cover. Go to next step.
  4. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance of Brown wire between BCM Bone connector terminal No. 10 and multifunction switch connector terminal No. 2. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open Brown wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace multifunction switch.
