AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE APPLICATIONS

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. On vehicles using 41TE transaxle, drain engine cooling system and remove coolant return extension pipe. On all models, disconnect throttle linkage and shift linkage from transaxle. Disconnect cooler line hoses and lock-up torque converter harness connector.
  2. Attach engine support fixture to upper engine compartment, and support engine. Remove upper bellhousing bolts. Raise and support vehicle, and remove front wheels. Remove oil pan bolts, and drain transaxle. Reinstall oil pan.
  3. Remove axle nut cotter pin, nut lock and spring washer. Remove axle nut. Remove speedometer pinion gear and cable assembly from transaxle. Remove ball joint-to-steering knuckle clamp bolt.
  4. Separate ball joint stud from steering knuckle by prying against knuckle leg and control arm. DO NOT damage ball joint or CV joint boots.
  5. Separate outer CV joint splined shaft from hub by holding CV housing while pushing knuckle assembly away from shaft. Support CV joint housing assemblies aside and remove axle shafts.
  6. Remove left splash shield. Remove torque converter dust cover. Index mark torque converter and drive plate for installation reference. Remove access plug in right splash shield to rotate engine crankshaft. Remove torque converter bolts.
  7. Disconnect neutral safety switch connector from neutral safety switch. Disconnect all other sensor connectors. Remove engine mount bracket from front crossmember, and remove front mount insulator through-bolt.
  8. Support transaxle with transmission jack. Remove left engine mount near transaxle differential cover. Remove starter mounting bolts and lower bellhousing bolts.
  9. Pry transaxle away from and slightly lower than engine. Pry transaxle from engine at extension housing (if necessary). Ensure all external connections are clear from transaxle, and lower unit from vehicle.

To install transaxle, reverse removal procedure. Check axle shaft lengths. See appropriate FWD AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVE AXLES. Adjust throttle cable and shift linkage as necessary. Replace oil pan gasket, and fill transaxle with required amount of fluid. See TRANSMISSION SERVICING - A/T article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING.

  1. Disconnect battery. Remove engine air inlet tube. Disconnect crankshaft position sensor, located on right side of bellhousing. Remove sensor. Disconnect transaxle harness connector, located on right shock absorber tower.
  2. Lift vehicle on hoist and remove front wheels. Remove strut-to-steering knuckle bolts on both sides of vehicle. Remove ABS wheel speed sensors (if equipped). Using pry bar, disconnect inner CV joint from transaxle. Pull axle shafts outward sufficiently to allow clearance for transaxle removal. Support axle shafts with wire. It is not necessary to remove axle shafts from vehicle.
  3. Remove engine-to-transaxle bracket. Remove bellhousing cover. Mark flexplate and torque converter for installation reference. Remove torque converter bolts.
  4. Unbolt starter and allow it to sit between engine and frame. Disconnect cooler lines from transaxle. Plug openings. Disconnect gear selector cable from transaxle. Unbolt exhaust pipe from manifolds. Remove exhaust system from vehicle.
  5. Position transmission jack under transaxle. Secure transaxle to jack. Raise jack slightly. Remove rear mount bolt. Remove rear crossmember bolts. Remove rear crossmember. Lower transaxle slightly to access bellhousing bolts. Remove bellhousing bolts.
  6. Remove transaxle dipstick tube. Plug dipstick tube hole to prevent fluid loss. Remove engine-to-transaxle bolts. Carefully lower transaxle from vehicle.

To install transaxle, reverse removal procedure. Check axle shaft lengths. See appropriate FWD AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVE AXLES. Adjust throttle cable and shift linkage as necessary. Replace oil pan gasket, and fill transaxle with required amount of fluid (if necessary). See TRANSMISSION SERVICING - A/T article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING.

  1. Remove battery. Drain transaxle fluid. Remove air cleaner. Disconnect transaxle control cable. Disconnect inhibitor switch, solenoid, pulse generator, kickdown servo switch and oil temperature sensor. Disconnect speedometer cable. Disconnect oil cooler hoses.
  2. Remove starter motor. Remove upper transaxle-to-engine bolts. Remove transaxle mounting bracket. Raise vehicle, and remove wheel assemblies. Remove engine splash guard. Disconnect tie rod end from knuckle. Separate lower ball joint from knuckle. Insert pry bar between transaxle case and axle shaft. Pry axle shaft from transaxle. Secure axle shaft as far as possible from transaxle, and prevent it from falling. CAUTION: DO NOT pull on axle shaft. Doing so will damage inboard joint. DO NOT insert pry bar so deep as to damage oil seal.
  3. Remove bellhousing cover. On F4A33 and W4A33, remove front exhaust pipe. On W4A33, remove transfer assembly. On all models, remove flywheel-to-torque converter bolts. Support transaxle assembly using a transaxle jack. Remove lower transaxle-to-engine bolts. Ensure all cables, mounts and wires have been disconnected and do not interfere when lowering transaxle. Move transaxle to right. Lower and remove from vehicle.
CAUTIONDO NOT damage oil seal lip or serrated part of axle shaft.

To install, reverse removal procedure. On turbocharged models, protect lower radiator hose. On all models, install axle shaft so inboard joint of axle shaft is straight and not bent relative to transaxle. Tighten starter bolts with wiring harness clip and ground cable. Replace drain plug gasket, and fill transaxle with required amount of fluid. See TRANSMISSION SERVICING - A/T article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING.
