Removal
- Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-52765-S20956825452001011600000). Ensure negative battery cable is disconnected and isolated from all other components. CAUTION: Before removing steering wheel, position front wheels in a straight-ahead position and lock steering column by removing ignition key. Failure to do so could damage clockspring or require clockspring readjustment.
- Ensure wheels are in straight-ahead position. Remove air bag module-to-steering wheel nut from rear of steering wheel. Disconnect clockspring electrical connector from air bag module by pressing lock on air bag module electrical connector toward outside to spread open the lock. (Scheme 1) Using screwdriver, gently pry off electrical connector. DO NOT apply excessive force to electrical connector.
- Remove air bag module from steering wheel. Place air bag module on bench with trim cover upward, away from bench surface. CAUTION: DO NOT hammer on steering column shaft when removing steering wheel from steering column.
- Remove steering wheel retaining nut. Using puller, remove steering wheel.
Installation
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure wheels are in straight-ahead position and reference marks on clockspring are aligned. (Scheme 2) Use NEW steering wheel retaining nut to install steering wheel. DO NOT hammer on steering column shaft when installing steering wheel.
- Ensure wiring harness for clockspring does not become caught or tangled when installing steering wheel. Use care when installing air bag module on steering wheel, as not to pinch any wires for air bag module.
- Tighten steering wheel retaining nut and air bag module-to-steering wheel nut to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-52765-S41739914602001011600000). Fully rotate steering wheel in both directions to ensure proper operation. Activate air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-52765-S20956825452001011600000).

Scheme 2
- Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-52765-S20956825452001011600000). Ensure negative battery cable is disconnected and isolated from all other components.
- Clockspring is located below steering wheel. (Scheme 3) Remove steering wheel and air bag module. See «STEERING WHEEL & AIR BAG MODULE»(ref-52765-S18325622462001011600000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove lower steering column cover from steering column.
- Disconnect remaining electrical connectors for clockspring. Remove retaining screws and clockspring.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Reference marks on clockspring must be aligned on clockspring to provide full rotation of steering wheel.
- Rotate clockspring fully clockwise and then counterclockwise3 1/8 turns so reference marks on clockspring are aligned before installing steering wheel. (Scheme 2)
- Reinstall steering wheel and air bag module using proper procedure. See «STEERING WHEEL & AIR BAG MODULE»(ref-52765-S18325622462001011600000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Activate air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-52765-S20956825452001011600000).
Scheme 3
- Combination switch is located on steering column, below clockspring. (Scheme 3) Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-52765-S20956825452001011600000). Ensure negative battery cable is disconnected and isolated from all other components.
- Remove clockspring. See «CLOCKSPRING»(ref-52765-S31429490982001011600000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect necessary electrical connectors and remove combination switch from steering column.
To install reverse removal procedure. Reinstall clockspring using proper procedure. See CLOCKSPRING under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Activate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
Removal & Installation
- Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-52765-S20956825452001011600000). Ensure negative battery cable is disconnected and isolated from all other components.
- Remove upper and lower steering column covers. (Scheme 3) Remove retaining screws and ignition switch from lock cylinder housing. (Scheme 3)
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Activate air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-52765-S20956825452001011600000).
- Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-52765-S20956825452001011600000). Ensure negative battery cable is disconnected and isolated from all other components.
- Remove plugs, hood release handle and instrument panel lower cover. (Scheme 3) Remove upper and lower steering column covers. Remove clockspring and combination switch. See «CLOCKSPRING»(ref-52765-S31429490982001011600000) and «COMBINATION SWITCH»(ref-52765-S37278606522001011600000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
