DESCRIPTION
All models use electric motor-driven cooling system fans. Fan assembly is fastened to radiator by clips or bolts. On models with A/C, the cooling fan is also used along with the condenser fan during A/C operation.
OPERATION
Cooling fan will operate whenever A/C compressor clutch is engaged. Fan will also operate when coolant temperature reaches 185°F (85°C). When coolant temperature reaches 185°F (85°C), coolant temperature sensor contacts will close, causing current to flow through the radiator fan relay to the cooling fan. Cooling fan will shut off when coolant temperature is 172°F (78°C) or less.
On A/C models, when A/C is on HIGH setting and coolant temperature exceeds 185°F (85°C), the condenser fan motor relay is activated, operating the condenser fan and radiator fan assembly at high speed. When A/C is on LOW setting and coolant temperature exceeds 185°F (85°C), radiator fan assembly will operate. See SYSTEM OPERATING CONDITIONS table.
The fan assemblies are activated by the A/C control unit. The A/C control unit will produce a 12-volt (high) signal if the ignition switch, blower switch, A/C switch or compressor clutch is engaged. If any of the switches or coolant temperature sensor is off, no voltage (low) signal will be delivered from the A/C control unit.

SYSTEM OPERATING CONDITIONS
CONDENSER FAN FUNCTIONAL TEST
Remove connector at electric fan. Connect jumper wire from positive terminal of battery to Blue wire and negative lead to Black wire of connector. If fan does not operate, replace fan assembly.
RADIATOR FAN FUNCTIONAL TEST
Remove connector at electric fan. Connect jumper wire from positive terminal of battery to Blue/Red wire and negative lead to Blue/Black wire of connector. If fan does not operate, replace fan assembly.
CONDENSER FAN OR RADIATOR FAN WILL NOT OPERATE
Check for defective main fusible link to radiator fan motor relay. Fusible link is a Pink 30-amp link, located near positive battery cable.
CONDENSER FAN DOES NOT OPERATE
Check No. 5 fuse to condenser fan motor relay. Fuse is located in relay box on left rear corner of engine compartment.
RADIATOR & CONDENSER FAN OPERATE AT HIGH SPEED ONLY
- Ensure A/C clutch engages. If clutch is not engaging, repair A/C system.
- Check resistor. Resistor is located above condenser fan. Disconnect 4-pin connector from resistor. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between Blue/Black and Black/White wire terminals of resistor. Replace resistor if reading is not .26-.32 ohms.

- Remove radiator fan motor relay. Relay is located in relay box in front of right strut tower. (Scheme 1)
- Connect ohmmeter to relay terminals No. 1 and 3. (Scheme 2) Check continuity with and without battery connected. See «RADIATOR FAN RELAY CONTINUITY»(/eagle/talon/i-1989-1994/remont/cooling-fan/#engine-cooling-fan) table. Replace relay if continuity is not as specified. RADIATOR FAN RELAY CONTINUITY Battery Connected (1) Continuity Yes Continuity Between No. 1 & 3 Terminals No No Continuity Between No. 1 & 3 Terminals No Continuity Between No. 2 & 4 Terminals (1) Positive battery terminal connected to terminal No. 2 and negative terminal connected to terminal No. 4. COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR TESTING
- Drain cooling system. Remove coolant temperature sensor from lower corner of radiator. Place coolant temperature sensor in water up to the mounting threads.
- Heat water to 185°F (85°C) and check continuity between sensor terminals. Ensure continuity exist. Reduce water temperature to less than 172°F (78°C). Check continuity. Continuity should NOT exist. Replace sensor if it does not test as specified.
