Engine Controls - Adjustments Eagle Talon I

INTRODUCTION

Before performing any on-vehicle adjustments to fuel or ignition systems, ensure engine mechanical condition is okay.

VALVE CLEARANCE

Note. Hydraulic lifters are used. No adjustments are required.

IGNITION TIMING 1.8L

  1. Ensure vehicle is at operating temperature, all accessories are off and transmission is in Park or Neutral. Front wheels must be in a straight-ahead position.
  2. Insert paper clip in Crankshaft Revolution Counter (CRC or tachometer) filter connector and connect tachometer to engine. (Scheme 1) Ensure curb idle speed is set to specification. Turn engine off.
  3. Using a jumper wire, ground ignition timing adjustment connector Yellow/Red wire. (Scheme 3)and (Scheme 4). Start engine. Check base ignition timing. Loosen distributor hold-down bolt and adjust as necessary. Disconnect ground wire on ignition timing adjustment connector. Check actual ignition timing. Turn engine off. Remove all test equipment.

IGNITION TIMING 2.0L & 2.0L TURBO

  1. Ensure vehicle is at operating temperature, all accessories are off and transmission is in Park or Neutral. Front wheels must be in a straight-ahead position. Connect tachometer to engine RPM detection connector. (Scheme 2) Ensure curb idle speed is set to specification. Turn engine off.
  2. Using a jumper wire, ground ignition timing adjustment connector Yellow/Red wire (Yellow/Black wire on 2.0L Turbo). (Scheme 3)and (Scheme 4). Start engine. Check base ignition timing. Loosen crank angle sensor hold-down bolt and adjust as necessary. Disconnect ground wire on ignition timing adjustment connector. Check actual ignition timing. Turn engine off. Remove all test equipment.

CURB IDLE SPEED CHECK (1.8L)

  1. Ensure engine is at operating temperature and all accessories are off. Place transmission in Neutral and front wheels are in a straight-ahead position. Insert paper clip in CRC (tachometer) filter connector and connect tachometer to engine. (Scheme 1)
  2. Check ignition timing and adjust if necessary. Run engine at 2000-3000 RPM for more than 5 seconds. Allow engine to idle for 2 minutes. Check idle speed. Refer to «IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS»(/eagle/talon/i-1989-1994/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments) table. If idle speed is not within specification, diagnosis of Idle Speed Control (ISC) system is necessary. See appropriate G - TESTS W/ CODES article.

CURB IDLE SPEED CHECK (2.0L & 2.0L TURBO)

  1. Ensure engine is at operating temperature and all accessories are off. Place transmission in Neutral and front wheels are in a straight-ahead position. Connect tachometer to engine RPM detection terminal. (Scheme 2)
  2. Check ignition timing and adjust if necessary. Run engine at 2000-3000 RPM for more than 5 seconds. Allow engine to idle for 2 minutes. Check idle speed. Refer to «IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS»(/eagle/talon/i-1989-1994/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments) table. If idle speed is not within specification, diagnosis of Idle Speed Control (ISC) system is necessary. See appropriate G - TESTS W/ CODES article.

Note. Before adjusting basic idle speed, ensure throttle valve area is clean.

Scheme 5: BASIC IDLE SPEED (1.8L)
  1. Ensure engine is at operating temperature and all accessories are off. Place transmission in Neutral and front wheels in a straight-ahead position. Turn engine off.
  2. Loosen accelerator cable tension. Without starting engine, turn ignition on. Ensure TPS voltage is correct and leave ignition on for 15 seconds. This completely closes ISC plunger. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ISC control servomotor connector. (Scheme 5)
  3. Turn fixed Speed Adjustment Screw (SAS) until throttle valve is fully closed. Start engine. Check basic idle speed. See «IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS»(/eagle/talon/i-1989-1994/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments). If idle speed is not to specification, go to step 5.
  4. If idle speed is within specification, turn engine off. Remove all test equipment. Reconnect ISC control servomotor connector. Disconnect negative battery cable for 10 seconds to clear any trouble codes.
  5. Turn fixed SAS until idle speed starts to increase. (Scheme 6) Turn fixed SAS counterclockwise until idle speed no longer drops (touch point).
  6. Turn fixed SAS counterclockwise an additional 1/2 turn from touch point. Turn engine off. Ensure TPS voltage is correct. Remove all test equipment. Reconnect ISC control servomotor connector. Disconnect negative battery cable for 10 seconds to clear any trouble codes.

BASIC IDLE SPEED (2.0L & 2.0L TURBO)

  1. Ensure engine is at operating temperature and all accessories are off. Place transmission in Neutral and front wheels in a straight-ahead position. Turn engine off.
  2. Disconnect female connector from ignition timing connector. Using a jumper wire, ground ignition timing adjustment connector Yellow/Red wire (Yellow/Black wire on 2.0L Turbo).
  3. Using a jumper wire, ground terminal No. 10 of self-diagnostic connector. Self-diagnostic connector is located above left kick panel. Start engine. If idle speed is within specification, turn engine off. Remove all test equipment.
  4. If idle speed is not within specification, adjust using Speed Adjustment Screw (SAS). (Scheme 7) If idle speed cannot be adjusted properly, check for tampering of fixed SAS or a faulty Fast Idle Air Valve (FIAV).

IDLE MIXTURE

Note. Idle mixture is controlled by Electronic Control Unit (ECU). No adjustment is possible.

THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR

  1. Loosen throttle cable. With ignition off, connect DVOM between Electronic Control Unit (ECU) terminals No. 19 and No. 24. Turn ignition on. DO NOT start engine.
  2. Check TPS voltage. See TPS VOLTAGE SPECIFICATION table. Adjust TPS until correct voltage is obtained. Turn ignition off and disconnect DVOM. Adjust throttle cable. Disconnect negative battery cable for 10 seconds or more. Start engine and check idle speed.

TPS VOLTAGE SPECIFICATION

2.0L & 2.0L TURBO

  1. Loosen throttle cable. Disconnect idle position switch connector. (Scheme 8) Loosen lock nut on idle position switch.
  2. Turn idle position switch counterclockwise until throttle valve fully closes. Connect a DVOM between idle switch terminal and ground. Turn idle switch clockwise until DVOM indicates continuity.
  3. Turn idle position switch another 15/16 of a turn more from point where DVOM indicated continuity. Hold idle position switch while tightening lock nut. Adjust throttle cable, basic idle speed and throttle position sensor.
