INTRODUCTION
Note. Shadow and Sundance Convertible models equipped with 2.5L TBI engine are manufactured with either early or late design fuel, ignition and emission systems. Late design vehicles use an epoxy ignition coil, mounted on thermostat housing, and a high pressure fuel system requiring quick-connect fuel fittings. Early design vehicles use an oil-filled ignition coil, mounted on right inner fender, and a low pressure fuel system using hoses and clamps.
If no faults were found while performing BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES in BASIC TESTING , proceed with self-diagnostics. If no fault codes or only pass codes are present after entering self-diagnostics, proceed to TESTS W/O CODES article for diagnosis by symptom (i.e. ROUGH IDLE, NO START, etc.) in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section.

VEHICLE BODY IDENTIFICATION
SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS
The self-diagnostic capabilities of this system, if properly utilized, can simplify testing. The Single Board Engine Controller (SBEC) monitors several different engine control system circuits.
If a problem is sensed with a monitored circuit, a fault code is stored in the SBEC, the CHECK ENGINE light illuminates and SBEC enters limp-in mode. In limp-in mode, SBEC compensates for component failure by substituting information from other sources. This allows vehicle operation until repairs can be made.
Once codes are known, refer to FAULT CODES listed in this article to determine the questionable circuit. Test circuits and repair or replace components as required. If problem is repaired or ceases to exist, the SBEC cancels that fault code after 50 ignition on/off cycles. To clear codes, refer to CLEARING CODES in this article.
A specific fault code results from a particular system failure. It is NOT necessarily the reason for that failure. The fault code does not condemn a specific component. The fault code calls out a probable malfunction area.
Hard Failures
Hard failures cause CHECK ENGINE light to illuminate and remain on until the malfunction is repaired. If light comes on and remains on (light may flash) during vehicle operation, cause of malfunction must be determined using diagnostic (code) charts. If a sensor fails, SBEC will use a substitute value in its calculations, allowing engine operation in limp-in mode. In this condition, vehicle will run but driveability may be poor.
Intermittent Failures
Intermittent failures may cause CHECK ENGINE light to flicker or stay on until the intermittent fault goes away. However, the corresponding trouble code will be retained in SBEC memory. If related fault does not reoccur within a certain time frame, related trouble code will be erased from SBEC memory. Intermittent failures can be caused by faulty sensor, bad connector or wiring related problems. See INTERMITTENTS in TESTS W/O CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section.
DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE
Refer to ENTERING ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS to retrieve fault codes. If fault codes are NOT present and/or DRB-II (Diagnostic Readout Box-II) is used, proceed to one of the following tests
- Go to NO START TEST 1A (NS-1A) chart if a no-start condition exists or engine stalls after start-up. Perform indicated VERIFICATION PROCEDURE chart after repairs. Ensure charts apply to engine being tested.
- Go to DRIVEABILITY TEST 1A (DR-1A) chart if engine runs but has performance problems. Perform indicated VERIFICATION PROCEDURE chart after repairs. Ensure charts apply to engine being tested.
Note. When using trouble shooting charts for diagnosis, DO NOT skip any steps in chart or incorrect diagnosis may result.
Before proceeding with diagnosis, the following precautions must be followed
- Vehicle must have a fully charged battery and functional charging system.
- Probe SBEC connector from pin side. DO NOT backprobe SBEC connector.
- DO NOT cause short circuits when performing electrical tests. This will set additional fault codes, making diagnosis of original problem more difficult.
- DO NOT use a test light in place of a voltmeter.
- When checking for spark, ensure coil wire is NO more than 1/4" from ground. If coil wire is more than 1/4" from ground, damage to vehicle electronics and/or SBEC may result.
- DO NOT prolong testing of fuel injectors or engine may hydrostatically (liquid) lock.
- Always repair lowest fault code number (CHECK ENGINE light) or first fault displayed (DRB-II) first.
- Always perform verification procedure test after repairs are made.
- Always disconnect DRB-II after use.
- Always disconnect DRB-II before charging battery.
ENTERING ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS
Note. Manufacturer recommends using DRB-II (Diagnostic Readout Box-II) to diagnose the system. CHECK ENGINE light function can be used but has limited diagnostic usage.
Check Engine Light Diagnostic Mode
- Start engine (if possible). Move transmission shift lever through all positions, ending in Park. Turn A/C switch on, then off (if equipped).
- Turn engine off. Without starting engine again, turn ignition on, off, on, off and on. Record 2-digit fault codes as displayed by flashing CHECK ENGINE light.
- For example, Code 23 is displayed as flash, flash, 4-second pause, flash, flash, flash. After a slightly longer pause, other codes stored are displayed in numerical order.
- When CHECK ENGINE light begins to flash fault codes, it cannot be stopped. If you lose count, it will be necessary to start over. Code 55 indicates end of fault code display.
- Refer to FAULT CODES table to translate trouble code number to a system fault description (DRB-II display). Once trouble area is identified, refer to NO START TEST 1A (NS-1A) or DRIVEABILITY TEST 1B (DR-1B) trouble shooting chart to diagnose problem. Use trouble shooting chart titles to find appropriate chart.
- As an example, a 3.0L engine starts and runs, but has a driveability problem. CHECK ENGINE light indicates a Code 14. Refer to FAULT CODES table to translate trouble code number to a system fault description (DRB-II display).
- When system fault description (DRB-II display) is obtained, refer to DR-1B: DRB-II FAULT MESSAGES since vehicle has a driveability problem. Select fault message and corresponding test from table and proceed to appropriate chart.
DRB-II Diagnostic Mode
- Turn ignition off. Attach DRB-II to engine diagnostic connector. Connector is located in engine compartment, near SBEC.
- Start engine (if possible). With foot on brake, move transmission shift lever through all positions, ending in Park. Turn A/C switch on, then off (if equipped).
- Turn engine off. Without starting engine again, turn ignition on. Enter FUEL/IGN MENU. To enter FUEL/IGN MENU, see DRB-II TEST FUNCTIONS. At FUEL/IGN MENU, press "2" (READ FAULTS) key. Press ENTER key. After fault codes are accessed, refer to NO START TEST 1A (NS-1A) or DRIVEABILITY TEST 1A (DR-1A) for your engine.
- To erase faults while in this option go to next step. Press ATM key. At DRB-II display, press "2" (ERASE) key. DRB-II will display ERASE FAULTS ARE YOU SURE? (ENTER TO ERASE). Press ENTER key.
- When DRB-II is finished erasing fault codes, it will display FAULTS ERASED. This display will remain until ATM key is pressed. After ATM key is pressed, display will return to FUEL/IGN MENU screen.
DRB-II TEST FUNCTIONS
Note. DO NOT touch DRB-II keypad during DRB-II power-up sequence or an error message will result.
- In order to perform diagnostic tests using the DRB-II, the DRB-II must be in the FUEL/IGN MENU. At the FUEL/IGN MENU, fault codes and DRB-II test functions can be accessed.
- To reach FUEL/IGN MENU, turn ignition off. Attach DRB-II to engine diagnostic connector. Connector is located in engine compartment, near SBEC. Turn ignition switch to RUN position.
- All DRB-II character positions will illuminate and copyright information will appear on screen for a few seconds. If DRB-II screen is blank or any error messages appear, refer to «DRB-II PROBLEMS & ERROR MESSAGES»(/dodge/spirit/i-1988-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-4-cyl) in this article.
- After a few seconds DRB-II menu will appear. At DRB-II menu, press "4" (SELECT SYSTEM) key. Press ENTER key. At SELECT SYSTEM menu, press "1" (ENGINE) key. Press ENTER key. DRB-II menu will appear indicating engine year, size, type of transmission and SBEC part number.
- After a few seconds AIR COND menu will appear. Press "1" (WITH A/C) or press "2" (WITHOUT A/C). DRB-II display will change to ENGINE SYSTEMS menu. At ENGINE SYSTEMS menu, press "1" (FUEL/IGNITION) key. Press ENTER key.
- Display will change to FUEL/IGN MENU. At FUEL/IGN menu of engine diagnostic program, specific test functions programmed into DRB-II can be performed. The following DRB-II modes can be accessed: SYSTEM TEST, READ FAULTS, STATE DISPLAYS, ACTUATOR TEST and ADJUSTMENTS.
System Test Mode
This function is not available in the engine diagnostics program.
Read Faults Mode
This function allows the user to read and erase fault codes. A fault counter will appear along with fault displayed on DRB-II. As an example, DRB-II will display 1 OF 2 FAULTS. SBEC will store up to 8 fault messages. Faults are numbered in reverse order of setting. The most recent fault to occur will be number one. Vehicles without air conditioning will always have A/C CLUTCH RELAY CKT (circuit) stored in memory. This fault will always be number one if vehicle is not equipped with A/C. If no fault messages are stored, DRB-II will display NO FAULTS DETECTED and start counter will show 0 STARTS SINCE ERS (Erased).
A start counter will appear below DRB-II fault counter display. Start counter counts the number of times vehicle is started since faults were last set, erased, or battery was disconnected. This helps determine if fault is intermittent. Memory space limits start counter to first 3 faults. Start counter of zero equals a hard fault. Start counter of more than zero indicates an intermittent fault. Start counter will count up to 255 starts. If no fault messages are stored, DRB-II will display NO FAULTS DETECTED and start counter will show 0 STARTS SINCE ERS (Erased).
State Display Mode
This function allows user to read states or values of a variety of sensors, inputs/outputs and components.
The SBEC can only recognize high and low states on switch circuits. SBEC cannot tell the difference between an open or short circuit or a defective switch. If DRB-II displays a change between INPUT HIGH and INPUT LOW, it can be assumed that the entire switch circuit to the SBEC is functioning.
Actuator Test Mode
This function allows the user to check for proper operation of output circuits or devices, which the SBEC cannot internally recognize. DRB-II allows SBEC to activate these outputs or devices, allowing an observer to verify proper operation.
Most of the tests available in this mode provide an audible or visual indication of device operation (click of relay contacts, spray fuel, etc.). With the exception of an intermittent condition, if a device functions properly during its test, it can be assumed that the device, wiring and its driver circuit are functioning properly.
Adjustments Mode
This function allows the user to erase fault codes. Function also allows user to reset Emission Maintenance Reminder (EMR) light and mileage (trucks only).
DRB-II Volt/Ohmmeter Mode
- To access volt/ohmmeter mode of DRB-II, connect Red volt/ohmmeter test lead to Red port, located on right top side of DRB-II. NOTE: Because DRB-II is grounded through engine diagnostic connector, only one volt/ohmmeter test lead is required when using volt/ohmmeter option. DRB-II volt/ohmmeter should only be used when diagnostic flow charts require the use of this option.
- To access voltmeter, press VOLT/OHM key once. DRB-II is now in voltmeter mode. Touch test probe to connector or wire to be measured. Read voltage on DRB-II display. When voltage testing is complete, press VOLT/OHM key 3 times to exit voltmeter mode.
- To access ohmmeter, press VOLT/OHM key twice. DRB-II is now in ohmmeter mode. Touch test probe to connector or wire to be measured. Read resistance to circuit ground on DRB-II display. When resistance testing is complete, press VOLT/OHM key twice to exit ohmmeter mode.
DRB-II Continuity Meter Mode
Press VOLT/OHM key 3 times. Display will read NO CONTINUITY. Touch test probe to connector or wire to be measured. Read continuity on DRB-II display. When continuity testing is complete, press VOLT/OHM key once to exit continuity meter mode.
Vehicles Tested Mode
- Vehicles tested mode is used to show what vehicles are covered by DRB-II cartridge. To access vehicles tested mode, turn ignition off. Attach DRB-II to engine diagnostic connector. Connector is located in engine compartment, near SBEC.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. All DRB-II character positions will illuminate and copyright information will appear on screen for a few seconds. After a few seconds DRB-II menu will appear.
- At DRB-II menu, press "1" (VEHICLES TESTED) key. Press ENTER key. DRB-II will display vehicles covered by cartridge. Screen will display for 5 seconds and return to DRB-II menu.
How To Use Mode
Enter DRB-II menu display. Refer to steps 1) and 2) under VEHICLES TESTED MODE. At DRB-II menu, press "2" (HOW TO USE) key. Press ENTER key. A series of screens will be displayed explaining the use of DRB-II keys used to move through engine diagnostic program.
Configure Mode
- Configure option allows user to customize DRB-II display. For example, if metric system is more useful to use, simply select METRIC from the appropriate menu.
- All selections made under CONFIGURE option remain active until user changes selection. To enter configure mode, enter DRB-II menu display. Refer to steps 1) and 2) under VEHICLES TESTED MODE. At DRB-II menu, press "3" (CONFIGURE) key. Press ENTER key. DRB-II will display CONFIGURE menu.
Blank Message Screen
- Connect DRB-II to a different vehicle. If message screen is still blank, DRB-II or cable adapter are faulty. Substitute to find faulty component.
- If message screen is not blank, DRB-II and cable adapter are functioning properly. Inspect diagnostic connector for proper wire placement, damaged terminals or pushed out pins. Repair as necessary.
- If diagnostic connector is okay, using an ohmmeter, check resistance between Black/White or Black/Yellow wire and ground at engine diagnostic connector. If resistance is greater than 10 ohms, repair open in Black/White or Black/Yellow wire.
No Response Message
- Connect DRB-II to another vehicle. If DRB-II displays NO RESPONSE message again, DRB-II or cable adapter are faulty. Substitute to find faulty component. If message screen does not display NO RESPONSE, DRB-II and cable adapter are functioning properly. Go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect DRB-II. Using an ohmmeter, check Pink or Black/Red wire for resistance between SBEC and engine diagnostic connectors. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open in Pink or Black/Red wire.
- If resistance is less than 10 ohms, check Light Green/Orange or Black/Pink wire for resistance between SBEC and engine diagnostic connectors. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open in Light Green/Orange or Black/Pink wire.
Ram Test Failure Message
Replace DRB-II.
Cartridge Error Message
Replace DRB-II cartridge.
Key Pad Test Failure Message
Power up DRB-II again with fingers off the keypad. If error message returns, replace DRB-II.
High Or Low Battery Message
Correct condition of vehicle battery and reconnect DRB-II.

SELF-DIAGNOSTICS FAULT CODES
EMISSION MAINTENANCE REMINDER (EMR) MILEAGE TRANSFER
Note. EMR information applies only to trucks, but will be referred to in flow charts.
- When SBEC is replaced, vehicle mileage must be copied from odometer to replacement SBEC memory. Transfer of vehicle mileage will enable new SBEC to operate EMR light properly.
- Using DRB-II, enter FUEL/IGN MENU. See DRB-II TEST FUNCTIONS in this article. At FUEL/IGN menu, press "5" (ADJUSTMENTS) key. Press ENTER key. At ADJUSTMENTS menu, press "3" (EMR MEMORY CHECK) key. Press ENTER key. DRB-II display will read EMR MEMORY CHECK ARE YOU SURE? ENTER TO CONTINUE.
- Press ENTER key. DRB-II will display IS INSTRUMENT PANEL MILEAGE BETWEEN 9953 AND 10051? If vehicle mileage is within specification, EMR memory check is complete. Press YES key. If vehicle mileage is not within specification, go to next step.
- Press NO key. DRB-II will display ENTER MILEAGE SHOWN ON INSTRUMENT PANEL, USE ENTER KEY TO END. Enter vehicle mileage. DO NOT enter tenths. When correct vehicle mileage is entered, press ENTER key.
- DRB-II will ask for verification of mileage entry. If mileage entry was accurate, press ENTER key. DRB-II will display EMR MEMORY CHECK TEST COMPLETE. Vehicle must travel at least 8 miles for reset to occur.
EMISSION MAINTENANCE REMINDER (EMR) LIGHT RESET PROCEDURE
Note. EMR information applies only to trucks, but will be referred to in flow charts.
- The Emission Maintenance Reminder (EMR) light is designed to be a reminder to service the vehicle emissions control system. It is not an emissions warning system, only a reminder to perform emissions servicing.
- The components to be serviced include PCV valve, oxygen sensor and some vacuum-operated components. EMR light will illuminate after a predetermined mileage.
- Using DRB-II, enter FUEL/IGN MENU. See DRB-II TEST FUNCTIONS in this article. At FUEL/IGN menu, press "5" (ADJUSTMENTS) key. Press ENTER key.
- At ADJUSTMENTS menu, press "3" (EMR MEMORY CHECK) key. Press ENTER key. Press F1 or F2 key until display reads RESET EMR LIGHT. Press YES key.
- Display will read RESET EMR LIGHT ARE YOU SURE? YES, NO. Press YES key. When DRB-II is finished resetting EMR light, DRB-II display will read EMR LIGHT RESET.
CLEARING CODES
Note. Fault codes can also be cleared in READ FAULTS option of DRB-II. To ensure that all faults are read, it is advisable to use READ FAULTS option to erase fault codes. See DRB-II DIAGNOSTIC MODE under ENTERING ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS in this article.
- If DRB-II is not available, go to step 3). If DRB-II is available, enter FUEL/IGN MENU. See «DRB-II TEST FUNCTIONS»(/dodge/spirit/i-1988-1995/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-4-cyl__drb-ii-test-functions) in this article. At FUEL/IGN menu, press "5" (ADJUSTMENTS) key. Press ENTER key. At ADJUSTMENTS menu, press "1" (ERASE FAULTS) key. Press ENTER key.
- DRB-II will display ERASE FAULTS ARE YOU SURE? (ENTER TO ERASE). Press ENTER key. When DRB-II is finished erasing fault codes, screen will display FAULTS ERASED.
- If DRB-II is not available, fault codes may be cleared by disconnecting negative battery cable for at least 15 seconds, allowing SBEC to clear fault codes.

Shadow and Sundance Convertible models are manufactured with either early or late design fuel, ignition and emission systems. Late design vehicles use an epoxy ignition coil, mounted on thermostat housing, and a high pressure fuel system requiring quick-connect fuel fittings. Early design vehicles use an oil-filled ignition coil, mounted on right inner fender, and a low pressure fuel system using hoses and clamps.

NS-17A: PERFORMING NO FAULT CODE MECHANICAL TEST
At this point in the start-and-stall test procedure, if it is determined that all engine control systems are operating as designed and are not the cause of a no start-and-stall problem, the following additional items should be checked as possible causes
- Check if any TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS (TSBs) apply to vehicle.
- Check engine vacuum.
- Check engine compression.
- Check for exhaust system restriction.
- Check camshaft and crankshaft sprockets.
- Check valve timing.
- Check torque converter stall speed.
- Check secondary ignition circuit for abnormal scope pattern.
- Check for fuel contamination.
- Ensure PCV system is functioning properly.
DRIVEABILITY DIAGNOSTIC FLOW CHARTS DR-1A TO DR-45A

DR-1A: CHECKING SYSTEM FOR FAULTS
Note. Battery must be fully charged and at rated capacity before performing any driveability test procedure. If vehicle starts and stalls repeatedly, perform test NS-3A: CHECKING FOR INJECTOR FAULTS, POWER TO ENGINE CONTROLLER, MAP SENSOR & THEFT ALARM STATUS.
- Connect DRB-II to engine diagnostic connector. Read fault messages. If DRB-II displays fault messages, go to DR-1B: DRB-II FAULT MESSAGES. Go to step 9) if DRB-II displays ENGINE COLD TOO LONG. If DRB-II displays INTERNAL CONTROLLER FAILURE, go to step 8). If DRB-II displays NO FAULTS, go to next step.
- If NO FAULTS message appears on DRB-II display, start engine. Allow engine to reach normal operating temperature. Set engine speed manually ( DO NOT use DRB-II to set speed) to 2000 RPM for about 10 seconds. Return engine to idle.
- If vehicle is not equipped with A/C, go to step 5). If vehicle is equipped with A/C, put A/C fan on low speed. Turn A/C on. If engine stalls when A/C is turned on, turn ignition switch off.
- Disconnect engine controller connector. Inspect engine controller connector for corroded or loose terminals. Repair as required. Turn ignition switch on. Put DRB-II in voltmeter mode.
- Probe engine controller connector DB (Dark/Blue ) wire at cavity No. 9. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair DB wire. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace engine controller. Perform test VER-2: VERIFICATION PROCEDURE 2.
- If vehicle is equipped with A/T, apply brakes and shift through all gears. Return shift lever to Park. Read fault messages displayed on DRB-II.
- If DRB-II still shows NO FAULTS, check TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS for any pertinent information relating to driveability problems. If a TSB exists, perform corrective action. If driveability problem continues after performing TSB procedure or if no TSB information is found, perform test DR-30A: CHECKING SECONDARY IGNITION & TIMING.
- If INTERNAL CONTROLLER FAILURE message appears on DRB-II display, replace engine controller. Perform test VER-2: VERIFICATION PROCEDURE 2.
- If ENGINE COLD TOO LONG message appears on DRB-II display, check engine cooling system. Repair as required. Perform test VER-3: VERIFICATION PROCEDURE 3.
DR-1B: DRB-II FAULT MESSAGES
Using the DRB-II FAULT MESSAGES table, select the fault message and corresponding test. Correct all hard fault messages before proceeding to intermittent fault message.

DR-41A: PERFORMING NO FAULT CODE MECHANICAL TEST
At this point in the driveability test procedure, if it is determined that all engine control systems are operating as designed and are not the cause of driveability problem, check the following additional items for possible causes
- Check valve timing.
- Check torque converter stall speed.
- Check engine compression.
- Check camshaft and crankshaft sprockets.
- Check for internal power brake booster vacuum leaks.
- Check for fuel contamination.
- Check for exhaust system restriction.
- Ensure injectors are not plugged or restricted.
- Ensure injector control wire is connected to correct injector.
- Ensure engine vacuum is at least 13 in. Hg.
- Ensure PCV system is functioning properly.

VER-1: VERIFICATION PROCEDURE 1
- Inspect vehicle to ensure all components are connected. Reassemble and reconnect components as necessary. Attempt to start engine. If engine does not start, return to test NS-1A: CHECKING FOR IGNITION SPARK & POWER FEED TO COIL.
- If engine starts and engine controller has been changed, go to next step. If engine starts and engine controller has not been changed, connect DRB-II to engine diagnostic connector and erase faults. Repair is now complete.
- If vehicle is equipped with factory theft alarm system, start engine about 20 times to activate theft alarm system. If vehicle is an AS or AN body, write EMR mileage into the new engine controller. Repair is now complete.
VER-2: VERIFICATION PROCEDURE 2
- If test VER-3: VERIFICATION PROCEDURE 3 has been performed previously, perform test VER-3 again. Inspect vehicle to ensure all engine components are connected. Reassemble and reconnect components as necessary.
- If another fault exists that has not been corrected, return to DR-1B: DRB-II FAULT MESSAGES and follow path specified by other fault. If engine controller has been replaced and vehicle is equipped with factory theft alarm system, start engine about 20 times to activate theft alarm system. If vehicle is an AS or AN body, write EMR mileage into new engine controller.
- Connect DRB-II to engine diagnostic connector and erase faults. Ensure no other faults are present. To ensure no other faults are present, start engine. Allow engine to reach normal operating temperature. Increase engine speed to 2000 RPM for about 10 seconds. Return engine to idle.
- If vehicle is equipped with A/T, apply brakes and cycle through all transmission gear positions. Place gear selector in Park. If vehicle is equipped with A/C, turn A/C on. Set blower speed to LOW.
- Turn engine off. Start engine. Allow engine to idle for about 2 minutes. Turn engine off. Using DRB-II, check for fault messages. If NO FAULT message appears on DRB-II display, test is complete.
- If repaired fault resets or another fault sets, check TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS for any pertinent information relating to problem. If a TSB exists, perform corrective action. If another fault sets, return to DR-1B: DRB-II FAULT MESSAGES.
VER-3: VERIFICATION PROCEDURE 3
- Inspect vehicle to ensure all engine components are connected. Reassemble and reconnect components as necessary. If another fault is present that has not been corrected, return to DR-1B: DRB-II FAULT MESSAGES and follow path specified by other fault.
- If engine controller has been changed and vehicle is equipped with factory theft alarm system, start engine about 20 times to activate theft alarm system. If vehicle is an AS or AN body, write EMR mileage into new engine controller.
- Connect DRB-II to engine diagnostic connector. Erase fault messages. Disconnect DRB-II. Ensure no other fault messages are present. To ensure no other fault messages are present, start engine. If vehicle is equipped with A/C, turn A/C on. Set blower speed to LOW.
- Drive vehicle for about 5 minutes. During this time, attain a speed above 40 MPH or more. Ensure transmission shifts through all gears. Upon completion of road test, turn engine off.
- Start engine. Allow engine to idle for about 2 minutes. Turn engine off. Connect DRB-II to engine diagnostic connector. Using DRB-II, check for fault messages. If no fault messages are present, test is complete.
- If repaired fault message resets or another fault message sets, check TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS for any pertinent information relating to driveability problems. If a TSB exists, perform corrective action. If another fault sets, return to DR-1B: DRB-II FAULT MESSAGES.
SUMMARY
If no hard fault codes or only pass codes are present, driveability symptoms exist or intermittent codes exist, proceed to TESTS W/O CODES article for diagnosis by symptom (i.e. ROUGH IDLE, NO START, etc.) or intermittent diagnostic procedures in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section.
