| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. |
- Raise and support vehicle. Drain transfer case. Mark front and rear output shaft yokes and drive shaft for installation reference. Disconnect speedometer cable (if equipped) and vacuum switch hoses.
- Disconnect shift lever link from operating lever. Support transfer case with transmission jack. Remove crossmember. Disconnect front and rear drive shaft yokes and support to one side.
- Remove transfer case-to-transmission nuts. Move transfer case assembly to rear until clear of transmission output shaft. Lower transfer case from vehicle. Remove all gasket material from rear of transmission adapter housing.
- Install NEW transmission-to-transfer case gasket with sealer on both sides. Align transfer case with transmission. Rotate transfer case output shaft until transmission output shaft engages transfer case input shaft.
- Move transfer case until case seats flush against transmission. Install transfer case attaching bolts. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. With vehicle in level position, remove filler plug and add lubricant until fluid level reaches bottom of filler hole.
- Use Mopar ATF Plus type 7176, or Dexron-II transmission fluid. Tighten all nuts and bolts to specification. Refer to the «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/dodge/ram-wagon-b3500/1991-2000/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-at) .
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
| CAUTION | Transmission and converter must be removed and installed as an assembly to prevent damage to converter drive plate, front pump bushing, and oil seal. DO NOT allow weight of transmission to rest on drive plate during removal or installation. |
- Remove the transfer case from 4WD vehicles. Refer to «TRANSFER CASE (NP-231 & NP-241)»(/dodge/ram-wagon-b3500/1991-2000/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-at) . Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect and lower exhaust system as needed for removal clearance. Remove engine-to-transmission struts (if equipped). Disconnect cooler lines at transmission. Remove starter, cooler line bracket and converter access cover. NOTE: Crankshaft flange bolt circle, inner and outer circle of holes in drive plate and tapped holes in converter all have one hole offset so parts can only be installed in original position.
- Loosen oil pan bolts. Tap pan to break loose and allow fluid to drain. Reinstall pan. Mark torque converter and flexplate for installation reference. Rotate crankshaft CLOCKWISE with socket on vibration damper bolt to access torque converter-to-flexplate bolts. Remove bolts. Mark drive shaft for installation reference. Remove from vehicle.
- Disconnect wiring connector from park/neutral position switch. Remove crankshaft position sensor. Disconnect gearshift rod and torque shaft assembly from transmission. Disconnect transmission throttle cable from lever. Remove linkage bellcrank assembly (if equipped). Remove oil filler tube. Disconnect speedometer cable (if equipped).
- Install engine support fixture under rear of engine. Raise transmission with service jack to relieve load on rear mount. Remove rear mount bolt and bolts securing crossmember to frame. Remove crossmember. Remove all converter housing-to-engine attaching bolts.
- Carefully work transmission and converter assembly rearward off engine block dowel pins, disengaging converter hub from end of crankshaft. Attach a small "C" clamp on edge of converter housing to hold converter in place while transmission is being removed. Lower transmission. Remove from vehicle.
Inspection
- Before installing converter, rotate front pump rotors with Aligner (C-3756) until 2 holes in tool handle are vertical. Slide torque converter over input and reaction shafts. Ensure converter hub slots are vertical and fully engage pump inner rotor lugs.
- Test for full engagement by placing a straightedge across face of transmission case. Surface of converter front cover lug should be at least 1/2" to rear of straightedge when converter is fully engaged. Attach small "C" clamp to edge of converter housing to hold converter in place while installing transmission.
- Inspect converter drive plate for distortion or cracks and replace if necessary. Install drive plate and tighten bolts to specification.
- Coat converter hub hole in crankshaft with multipurpose grease. Place transmission assembly on jack and position under vehicle. Ensure marks on converter and drive plate (made during removal) are aligned.
- Carefully work transmission assembly into position over dowels. Install all converter housing-to-engine bolts. Tighten to specification.
- To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Install crankshaft position sensor with NEW paper spacer. Adjust shift and throttle linkages and fill transmission with fluid. Use Mopar ATF Plus Type 7176 or Dexron-II automatic transmission fluid. On 4WD models, install transfer case. Tighten all bolts to specification.
