DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

A permanent magnet motor moves each of the power windows, including power vent windows. A positive and negative battery connection to either of the 2 motor terminals will cause the motor to rotate in one direction. Reversing current through these same 2 connections will cause the motor to rotate in the opposite direction.

Each individual motor is grounded through the master switch by a wire attached to the instrument panel reinforcement.

Components of the power window system are: switches and bezel, connectors, motors, regulators and wiring harnesses.

Check for faulty power window relay or faulty power window switches.

ONE WINDOW FAILS TO OPERATE

If one window does not operate, even if both master and passenger side power window switches are pressed, check for faulty master power window switch or inoperative power window motor. If one window does not operate when either master or passenger side power window switch is pressed, but does operate when both switches are pressed, check power window switch that is inoperative.

CIRCUIT BREAKER TEST

  1. Locate circuit breaker in fuse block module. Pull out slightly, but ensure circuit breaker terminals still contact terminals in fuse block module.
  2. Connect ground wire of voltmeter to good ground. With probe of voltmeter positive lead, check both terminals of circuit breaker for battery voltage. If only one terminal shows battery voltage, circuit breaker is defective and must be replaced.
  3. If neither terminal shows battery voltage, check for an open or shorted circuit to circuit breaker. Service and repair as necessary, and test components.

WINDOW MOTOR TEST

  1. Remove door trim panel. See WINDOW MOTOR & REGULATOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect motor connector. Connect positive battery test lead to either motor terminal. Connect negative battery test lead to remaining motor terminal. Motor should rotate, moving window up or down. If motor does not rotate, go to next step.
  2. Reverse battery lead connections. If motor still does not rotate, remove motor. See WINDOW MOTOR & REGULATOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If motor does rotate up or down, motor should be reversed one more time to complete a full-window travel inspection.
  3. Check switch voltage and continuity. See WINDOW SWITCH VOLTAGE TEST and WINDOW SWITCH CONTINUITY TEST. If switch voltage, continuity and motor test are okay, check for open circuit between motor and switch. Replace or repair as necessary.

WINDOW SWITCH VOLTAGE TEST

Note. The following wiring test sequence determines whether or not voltage is continuous through body harness to switch.

  1. Remove window switch. See WINDOW SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Carefully separate multiple terminal block on wiring harness from window switch body. Turn ignition switch to ON or ACCESSORY position.
  2. Using a test light, connect one lead to Black wire terminal. Touch other test light to Tan wire terminal wire.
  3. If test light comes on, wiring circuit between battery and switch is okay. If light does not come on, check 20-amp fuse in micro relay bank or check for a broken feed or ground wire. Repair and replace as necessary.

WINDOW SWITCH CONTINUITY TEST

Remove switch from mounting position. See WINDOW SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Using an ohmmeter, check switch continuity. See MASTER WINDOW SWITCH POSITION CONTINUITY TEST table or PASSENGER WINDOW SWITCH POSITION CONTINUITY TEST table. If there is no continuity at any one of the switch positions, replace switch. (Scheme 1), or 2.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

Removal

  1. Raise window to full up position. Remove inside remote door handle. Remove armrest and bezel. Remove power window and lock switch by inserting a flat-blade screwdriver into notch on forward end of switch housing. Push to depress locking tab.
  2. Pull out and forward to remove switch bezel from door panel. Using a trim panel removal tool, pry trim panel away from door around perimeter. Disconnect wiring from trim panel mounted light, if equipped. Remove door watershield. Lower window.
  3. Mark position of glass run adjusting rod. Loosen adjusting rod nut, located on bottom of door. (Scheme 3) Disconnect wiring connector from motor and regulator. Remove 3 attaching screws holding motor and regulator to inner panel. CAUTION: Wear protective gloves when handling window motor and regulator to protect against sharp edges of regulator.
  4. Maneuvering regulator by hand, disengage drive arm from glass lift channel. Pull glass to full up position. Tape glass in full up position. Move adjusting rod as necessary, allowing motor and regulator to pass glass run. Remove motor and regulator from door.

Installation

  1. Position motor and regulator in door. Remove tape from glass. Install drive arm slider onto glass lift channel. Align motor and regulator mounting holes to door panel. Ensure door switch wires are positioned between motor and regulator and door panel.
  2. Secure motor and regulator to door panel using 1/4"-20 x 1/2" screws. Install one screw to hold motor and regulator in place. Connect motor and regulator wiring connector. Install remaining screws. Tighten screws to 90 INCH lbs. (10 N.m).
  3. Position adjusting rod as previously marked. Operate window. Ensure correct adjustment with adjusting rod as necessary. Tighten adjusting rod nut on bottom of door. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.

Insert a flat-blade screwdriver into notch on forward end of switch housing. Push to depress locking tab. Pull out and forward to remove switch bezel from door panel. To install, reverse removal procedure.
