Engine System Testing & Engine Component Testing - 5.2l Cng Dodge Ram Wagon B1500

INTRODUCTION

Before testing separate components or systems, perform procedures in the BASIC TESTING - 5.2L (CNG) article. Since many computer-controlled and monitored components set a trouble code if they malfunction, also see the TESTS W/CODES - 5.2L article.

Note. Testing of individual components does not isolate possible short or open circuits. Perform all voltage tests with a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in procedure. Use ohmmeter to isolate shorted or open wiring harness.

  2. Auto Shutdown (ASD) Relay
  3. Brake Switch
  4. Crankshaft Position Sensor
  5. Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
  6. Fuel Pump Relay Which Is Referred To As High Pressure Fuel Shutoff Solenoid Relay
  7. Generator
  8. Idle Air Control Motor
  9. Ignition System Components (Except PCM)
  10. Intake Manifold
  11. Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor (If Equipped)
  12. MAP Sensor
  13. Overdrive Components
  14. Oxygen Sensor
  15. Park/Neutral Switch
  16. Speed Control Components
  17. Throttle Body
  18. Throttle Position Sensor
  19. Vehicle Speed Sensor

POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)

For testing of PCM power and ground circuits, see appropriate No Trouble Code (NTC) test in the TESTS W/CODES - 5.2L article.

FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR

  1. Fuel pressure sensor may also be referred to as fuel low pressure sensor. Fuel pressure sensor is located on fuel rail. (Scheme 144)
  2. If failure exists in fuel pressure sensor or wiring circuit, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be stored in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). For fuel pressure sensor and wiring circuit testing, see the «TESTS W/CODES - 5.2L»(/dodge/ram-wagon-b1500/1996-1997/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-tests-wcodes-52l) article.

FUEL TEMPERATURE SENSOR

  1. Fuel temp sensor is located on fuel rail. (Scheme 144)
  2. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect connector from fuel temperature sensor. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminals on fuel temperature sensor.
  3. Resistance should be within specification in relation to the temperature. See «FUEL TEMPERATURE SENSOR RESISTANCE»(/dodge/ram-wagon-b1500/1996-1997/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-system-testing-engine-component-testing-52l-cng) table. Replace fuel temperature sensor if resistance is not within specification.   4. If failure exists in fuel temperature sensor or wiring circuit, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be stored in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). High Pressure Fuel Shutoff Solenoid

  1. High pressure fuel shutoff solenoid is located on fuel pressure regulator. (Scheme 145) See FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR LOCATION table. FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR LOCATION Application Location Ram Van/Wagon Inside Of Passenger's Side Frame Rail, In Front Of Manual Fuel Shutoff Valve
  2. To check operation of high pressure fuel shutoff solenoid, ensure ignition is off. Disconnect connector for high pressure fuel shutoff solenoid. Using jumper wires, momentarily apply battery voltage and ground on electrical terminals of high pressure fuel shutoff solenoid.
  3. Listen for click sound at high pressure fuel shutoff solenoid to indicate solenoid operation. Replace high pressure fuel shutoff solenoid along with fuel pressure regulator if solenoid fails to operate. High pressure fuel shutoff solenoid is integral part of the fuel pressure regulator and cannot be serviced separately. Note. High pressure fuel shutoff solenoid is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). For high pressure fuel shutoff and wiring circuit testing, see No Start (NS) test for fuel relays/solenoids in TESTS W/CODES - 5.2L article.

Low Pressure Fuel Shutoff Solenoid

  1. Low pressure fuel solenoid is located on fuel rail. (Scheme 144)
  2. To check operation of low pressure fuel shutoff solenoid, ensure ignition is off. Disconnect connector for low pressure fuel shutoff solenoid. Using jumper wires, momentarily apply battery voltage and ground on electrical terminals of low pressure fuel shutoff solenoid.
  3. Listen for click sound at low pressure fuel shutoff solenoid to indicate solenoid operation. Replace solenoid if it fails to operate. FUEL DELIVERY

Note. For fuel system pressure testing, see the BASIC TESTING - 5.2L (CNG) article.

Fuel Injector

  1. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect connector at fuel injector. To check fuel injector resistance, using ohmmeter, check resistance between electrical terminals on fuel injector.
  2. Replace fuel injector if resistance is not within specification. See FUEL INJECTOR RESISTANCE SPECIFICATIONS table. FUEL INJECTOR RESISTANCE SPECIFICATIONS Application Ohms Ram Pickup 4-5 CAUTION: Before checking fuel injector operation, low pressure fuel shutoff solenoid MUST BE disconnected to prevent natural gas from entering the system.
  3. To check fuel injector operation, ensure ignition is off. Disconnect connector from low pressure fuel shutoff solenoid.
  4. Low pressure fuel solenoid is located on fuel rail. (Scheme 144)
  5. Disconnect connector from fuel injector. Using jumper wires, momentarily apply battery voltage and ground on electrical terminals of fuel injector.
  6. Listen for click sound at fuel injector to indicate fuel injector operation. Replace fuel injector if fuel injector fails to operate.
