DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
A permanent magnet motor moves each of the power windows, including power vent windows. A positive and negative battery connection to either of the 2 motor terminals will cause the motor to rotate in one direction. Reversing current through these same 2 connections will cause the motor to rotate in the opposite direction. Each individual motor is grounded through the master switch by a wire attached to the instrument panel reinforcement.
WINDOWS
Remove door trim panel. Loosen bolts holding window to regulator. Raise window fully, seating window in frame. Tighten bolts. Install door trim panel.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
- Inspect circuit breaker No. 20 (20-amp) in junction block. Junction block is located in left end of instrument panel.
- Inspect fuse No. 6 (40-amp) in Power Distribution Center PDC). PDC is located in left side of engine compartment.
- Inspect power window system ground circuit. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/dodge/ram-van/iii-1994-2003/remont/windows/#power-window-system) .
CIRCUIT BREAKER
- Locate circuit breaker for power window system. See «TROUBLE SHOOTING»(/dodge/ram-van/iii-1994-2003/remont/windows/#power-window-system__trouble-shooting) . Pull circuit breaker out slightly, but ensure circuit breaker terminals still contact terminals in fuse block.
- Connect voltmeter negative lead to ground. Using voltmeter positive lead, check both terminals of circuit breaker for battery voltage. If voltmeter indicates battery voltage at both terminals, circuit breaker is okay.
- If voltmeter indicates battery voltage at one terminal only, replace faulty circuit breaker. If voltmeter indicates no voltage at either terminal, check for an open or shorted circuit to circuit breaker. Repair as necessary and recheck system operation.
POWER WINDOW MOTOR TEST
- Remove door trim panel. Disconnect window motor connector. Using jumper wires, apply battery voltage to window motor terminals. Motor should operate, unless window is already at maximum travel.
- Reverse jumper wires. Window should move in opposite direction. If window does not move in either direction, replace window motor.
- If motor operates in one direction only, replace motor. See «POWER WINDOW MOTOR R & I»(/dodge/ram-van/iii-1994-2003/remont/windows/#power-window-system) . Disconnect window glass from regulator plate. Check window glass, tracks and regulator for sticking, binding or improper adjustment. Repair as necessary and recheck system operation.
POWER WINDOW SWITCH
- Remove window switch from door trim panel. See «POWER WINDOW SWITCH»(/dodge/ram-van/iii-1994-2003/remont/windows/#power-window-system__power-window-switch) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Using an ohmmeter, check switch continuity. See appropriate table: «DRIVER'S WINDOW SWITCH CONTINUITY»(/dodge/ram-van/iii-1994-2003/remont/windows/#power-window-system). «PASSENGER'S WINDOW SWITCH CONTINUITY»(/dodge/ram-van/iii-1994-2003/remont/windows/#power-window-system).
- Replace power window switch as necessary. (Scheme 1)or (Scheme 2).
- Vehicles equipped with Auto Down feature have electronic components in switch to actuate Auto Down. To test, check switch continuity, reconnect switch, turn ignition on and test feature. If Auto Down does not work, replace switch.

PASSENGER'S WINDOW SWITCH CONTINUITY
ALL WINDOWS INOPERATIVE
- Check circuit breaker for power window system. See «TROUBLE SHOOTING»(/dodge/ram-van/iii-1994-2003/remont/windows/#power-window-system__trouble-shooting) . Replace circuit breaker as necessary. If circuit breaker is okay, go to next step.
- Remove left front power window switch. See «POWER WINDOW SWITCH»(/dodge/ram-van/iii-1994-2003/remont/windows/#power-window-system__power-window-switch) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check for continuity between ground and driver window power window switch wiring harness connector terminal No. 2 (Black wire). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/dodge/ram-van/iii-1994-2003/remont/windows/#power-window-system) . If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Black wire between driver power window switch connector and ground.
- Check window switch. See «POWER WINDOW SWITCH»(/dodge/ram-van/iii-1994-2003/remont/windows/#power-window-system__power-window-switch) under COMPONENT TESTS.
ONE WINDOW INOPERATIVE
Note. Window glass must be free to slide up and down for power window motor to function properly. If glass is not free to move up and down, motor will overload and trip the circuit breaker.
- Place window glass halfway between up and down positions. Verify glass can be moved slightly from side to side, front to rear, and up and down. If glass is not free to move, check window glass, tracks and regulator for sticking or binding. Repair as necessary and recheck system operation. If glass moves freely, go to next step.
- Disconnect and remove power window switch in door with inoperative window. See «POWER WINDOW SWITCH»(/dodge/ram-van/iii-1994-2003/remont/windows/#power-window-system__power-window-switch) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between passenger power window switch wiring harness connector terminal (Tan wire) or driver power window switch wiring harness connector terminal (Tan wire) and ground. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/dodge/ram-van/iii-1994-2003/remont/windows/#power-window-system) . If battery voltage is not present, repair open Tan wire as necessary. If battery voltage exists, and inoperative window is on driver side, go to step 4). If battery voltage exists, and inoperative window is on passenger side, go to step 3). NOTE: Passenger side switch is grounded through driver side switch.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Check continuity between ground and passenger power window switch harness connector cavities No. 1 (Brown/White wire) and No. 5 (Violet/White wire). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/dodge/ram-van/iii-1994-2003/remont/windows/#power-window-system) . If continuity exists on both circuits, go to step 5). If continuity does not exist on either or both circuits, repair open circuit.
- Check power window switch. See «POWER WINDOW SWITCH»(/dodge/ram-van/iii-1994-2003/remont/windows/#power-window-system__power-window-switch) under COMPONENT TESTS. Replace faulty power window switch as necessary. If switch is okay, go to next step.
- Using an ohmmeter, check continuity of each circuit between inoperative power window switch wiring harness connector and corresponding power window motor wiring harness connector terminal. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/dodge/ram-van/iii-1994-2003/remont/windows/#power-window-system) . If continuity does not exist in one or more circuits, repair open circuit(s) as necessary. Recheck system operation. If continuity exists in all circuits, power window switch and switch circuits are okay. Check power window motor. See «POWER WINDOW MOTOR TEST»(/dodge/ram-van/iii-1994-2003/remont/windows/#power-window-system__power-window-motor-test) .

Removal
- Raise window to full-up position. Remove inside remote door handle. Remove armrest and bezel. Remove power window and lock switch by inserting a flat-blade screwdriver into notch on forward end of switch housing. Push to depress locking tab.
- Pull switch bezel out and forward to bezel from door panel. Using a trim stick, pry trim panel away from door around perimeter. Disconnect trim panel mounted courtesy light (if equipped). Remove door watershield. Lower window.
- Remove front glass channel-to-inner door panel bolt. Disconnect window motor connector. Remove regulator mounting screws. Maneuvering regulator by hand, disengage drive arm from glass lift channel. Pull glass to full-up position and tape glass in place.
- Move glass channel as necessary to move motor and regulator pass glass channel. Remove motor and regulator as an assembly. Secure window regulator in a vice to prevent sector gear from rotating. Remove counterbalance spring from regulator. Remove window motor retaining bolts and motor from regulator.
Installation
- Install window motor to regulator. Install regulator counterbalance spring. Position motor and regulator in door. Remove tape from glass. Install drive arm slider onto glass lift channel. Align motor and regulator mounting holes to door inner panel.
- Ensure door switch wires are positioned between motor and regulator and door inner panel. Secure motor and regulator to door panel using 1/4"-20 x 1/2" screws. Install one screw to hold motor and regulator in place. Connect motor and regulator wiring connector. Install remaining screws. Tighten screws to 90 INCH lbs. (10 N.m). To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
Removal & Installation
Disconnect negative battery cable. Using a flat-bladed screwdriver, gently pry upper edge of power switch bezel to release snap clip retainer. Pull switch bezel out and forward to access connectors. Disconnect connectors and remove switch bezel. Remove power window switch from bezel. To install, reverse removal procedure.
