Starter Removal & Installation Dodge Ram Van II

RWD MODELS

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable. Remove starter motor heat shield retaining bolts. Remove battery cable and solenoid lead wires from starter terminals. Remove starter mounting bolts and support bracket (if equipped).
  2. Avoid damaging flywheel housing and carefully remove starter. Test starter motor before installing. Clean starter-to-flywheel housing contact surface to provide a good electrical connection.
  3. When tightening starter motor attaching bolt, be sure the shoulder on starter housing is fitted squarely into flywheel housing and seal to insure proper alignment. Reverse removal procedure to complete assembly.

FWD MODELS

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable. Remove heat shield and clamp (if equipped). On 2.2L engine, loosen air pump tube at exhaust manifold and swivel tube bracket away from starter.
  2. Disconnect solenoid lead wire and battery cable at starter. Remove starter mounting bolts and support bracket (if equipped). Remove starter from vehicle.
  3. To install, position starter in flywheel housing and install mounting bolts. Install support bracket between starter and engine. Attach solenoid lead wire and battery cable to starter.
  4. On 2.2L engine, swivel air pump tube toward starter and connect tube bracket to exhaust manifold. Install heat shield and clamp. Connect negative battery cable.
