THERMOSTAT

The wax pellet driven en, reverser poppet, choke type thermostat is located on left front of engine (2.2L, 2.6L, 3.7L engines) and top of intake manifold (5.2L, 5.9L engines,) in water outlet elbow.

On 2.6L engines, thermostat begins opening at 187-194°F (86-99-0°C) and fully opens at 215°F (102°FC). On all others engines, thermostat begins opening at 192-199°F (88-93°C), and fully opens at 220°F (104°C).

PRESSURE CAP

All models use a 14-18 psi (1.0-1.2 kg/cm 2 ) pressure cap which should be tested in the range. Center of cap is equipped with a vent valve which allows a small flow through cap when temperature is below boiling point. Valve closes when boiling point is reached.

Valve opens when coolant is cooling and contracting, permitting liquid to return to radiator from coolant reserve tank.

WATER PUMP

Pump is serviced only as an assembly. When replacing water pump, be sure correct pump is used. Pump impeller must be compatible with pulley system drive ratio. It is possible to replace pump without discharging air conditioning system.

When replacing water pump because of bearing or shaft failure, carefully inspect fan for cracks, loose blades or rivets caused by excessive vibration. Replace fan if any damage observed.

MAINTENANCE

On all models, inspect cooling system every 12 months or 15,000 miles. On 2.2L and 2.6L engines, drain, flush and refill cooling system every 36 months or 52,000 miles, and every 24 months or 30,000 miles thereafter.

On all other engines, drain, flush and refill system at 36 months or 52,000 miles for light duty models, 36 months or 48,000 miles for heavy duty models, and every 24 months or f30,000 miles thereafter.

Maintain coolant mixture of 50% ethylene glycol type anti-freeze and 50% water year-round. Coolant must have silicate inhibitors.
