SELF DIAGNOSTIC TESTS

Note. Tests are written specifically for Chrysler's Diagnostic Readout Box (DRB). A generic scan tool may not be capable of performing all necessary test functions.

Note. In the following self-diagnostic tests, illustrations are courtesy of Chrysler Corp. TEST VER-1 (VERIFICATION PROCEDURE) is located at end of article.

TEST 1A - TROUBLE CODES

Battery must be fully charged before proceeding. Use this diagnostic information only when instructed to by another diagnostic article. Display will fit 2 categories: scan tool failure message or BUS failure message. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) to read message. See TROUBLE CODES table and proceed to appropriate test. If scan tool screen is blank, go to TEST 2A.

TROUBLE CODES

TEST 2A - BLANK SCAN TOOL MESSAGE SCREEN

Note. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION in appropriate TESTS W/CODES article below. For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS section. Perform TEST VER-1 after each repair.

Disconnect scan tool from Data Link Connector (DLC). Using an external ohmmeter, check for a good ground circuit in DLC. See DATA LINK CONNECTOR POWER & GROUND IDENTIFICATION table. If ground circuit is okay, go to next step. If ground circuit is not okay, repair as necessary. Perform TEST VER-1. Turn ignition on. Using an external voltmeter, check for battery voltage in DLC, on wire identified in DATA LINK CONNECTOR POWER & GROUND IDENTIFICATION table. If battery voltage is not present, go to next step. If battery voltage is present, go to step 4). Check appropriate fuse identified in DATA LINK CONNECTOR FUSE IDENTIFICATION table. If fuse is blown, replace fuse. Perform TEST VER-1. If fuse is not blown, inspect and repair wiring as necessary. Perform TEST VER-1. Try a different scan tool cable. If scan tool screen is no longer blank, replace defective scan tool cable. Perform TEST VER-1. If scan tool screen is still blank, try a different scan tool. If scan tool screen is no longer blank, replace defective scan tool. Perform TEST VER-1.

DATA LINK CONNECTOR FUSE IDENTIFICATION

TEST 7A - SHORT TO BATTERY

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector.
  1. Using scan tool, indicate whether vehicle is equipped with specific module. For module/system options available, refer to MODULE APPLICATIONS table under IDENTIFICATION. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Transmission Control Module (TCM) connector, if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO BATTERY, replace TCM. Perform TEST VER-1.
  2. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO BATTERY, turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector.
  3. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO BATTERY, go to TEST 7B. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO BATTERY, turn ignition off. Disconnect Controller Anti-Lock Brake (CAB) module connector, if equipped.
  4. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO BATTERY, go to TEST 7C. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO BATTERY, turn ignition off. Disconnect Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC) or Electronic Instrument Cluster (EIC) connector. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO BATTERY, go to TEST 7E. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO BATTERY, turn ignition off. Disconnect Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) module connector, if equipped.
  5. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO BATTERY, replace VTSS module. Perform TEST VER-1. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO BATTERY, turn ignition off. Disconnect compass/mini trip module connector, if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO BATTERY, replace compass/mini trip module. Perform TEST VER-1.
  6. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO BATTERY, turn ignition off. Disconnect Infinity premium radio, if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO BATTERY, replace radio/CD player. Perform TEST VER-1.
  7. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO BATTERY, turn ignition off. Wait 2 minutes before proceeding. Disconnect Air Bag Control Module (ACM), if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO BATTERY, replace ACM. Perform TEST VER-1.
  8. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO BATTERY, turn ignition off. Disconnect Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) module connector, if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO BATTERY, replace ATC module. Perform TEST VER-1.
  9. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO BATTERY, turn ignition off. Disconnect Body Control Module (BCM) connectors, if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO BATTERY, go to TEST 7F. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO BATTERY, disconnect scan tool from Data Link Connector (DLC).
  10. Using an external voltmeter, check voltage between DLC, CCD BUS positive circuit (Violet/Brown wire) and ground. If voltage is more than 8 volts, repair short to voltage in CCD BUS positive circuit. Perform TEST VER-1.
  11. If voltage is less than 8 volts, check voltage between DLC, CCD BUS negative circuit (White/Black wire) and ground.
  12. If voltage is more than 8 volts, repair short to voltage in CCD BUS negative circuit. Perform TEST VER-1. If voltage is less than 8 volts, replace scan tool, scan tool cable or cartridge as necessary. Perform TEST VER-1.

TEST 7B - SHORT TO BATTERY

Note. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION in appropriate TESTS W/CODES article below. For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS section. Perform TEST VER-1 after each repair.

Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance between Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector terminals No. 26, CCD BUS positive circuit (Violet/Brown wire) and PCM terminal No. 7, 8-volt supply circuit (Orange wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short between CCD BUS positive circuit and 8-volt supply circuit. Perform TEST VER-1. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, check resistance between PCM connector terminals No. 46, CCD BUS negative circuit, and PCM terminal No. 7, 8-volt supply circuit (Orange wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short between CCD BUS negative circuit and 8-volt supply circuit. Perform TEST VER-1. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-1.

TEST 7C - SHORT TO BATTERY

Note. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION in appropriate TESTS W/CODES article below. For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS section. Perform TEST VER-1 after each repair.

If voltage is more than 10 volts, repair short to voltage in Red/Black wire and replace CAB module. Perform TEST VER-1. If voltage is less than 10 volts, replace CAB module. Perform TEST VER-1.

TEST 7E - SHORT TO BATTERY

Note. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION in appropriate TESTS W/CODES article below. For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS section. Perform TEST VER-1 after each repair.

TEST 7F - SHORT TO BATTERY

If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair Violet/Brown wire shorted to Yellow/Red wire. Perform TEST VER-1. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, check resistance between BCM Blue connector terminals No. 20, CCD BUS negative circuit (White/Black wire), and No. 22, key-in light driver circuit (Yellow/Red wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair White/Black wire shorted to Yellow/Red wire. Perform TEST VER-1. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, check resistance between BCM Blue connector terminals No. 7, CCD BUS positive circuit (Violet/Brown wire), and No. 23, seat belt light output circuit (Dark Blue/Red wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair Violet/Brown shorted to Dark Blue/Red wire. Perform TEST VER-1. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, check resistance between Blue BCM connector terminals No. 20, CCD BUS negative circuit (White/Black wire), and No. 23, seat belt light driver circuit (Dark Blue/Red wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair White/Black shorted to Dark Blue/Red wire. Perform TEST VER-1. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, use scan tool in ohmmeter mode to check resistance between BCM case and ground. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair BCM case ground. Perform TEST VER-1. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, check resistance of BCM Blue connector terminal No. 19, ground circuit (Black/Light Green wire). If resistance is more than 15 ohms, repair open Black/Light Green wire. Perform TEST VER-1. If resistance is less than 15 ohms, replace BCM. Perform TEST VER-1.

TEST 8A - SHORT TO 5 VOLTS

Disconnect Air Bag Control Module (ACM) connector, if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, replace ACM. Perform TEST VER-1. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, turn ignition off. Disconnect Body Control Module (BCM) connectors, if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, go to TEST 8G. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, disconnect scan tool from Data Link Connector (DLC). Using an external voltmeter, check voltage between DLC, CCD BUS positive circuit (Violet/Brown wire) and ground. If voltage is more than 4 volts, repair short to voltage in CCD BUS positive circuit. Perform TEST VER-1. If voltage is less than 4 volts, check voltage between DLC, CCD 6BUS negative circuit (White/Black wire) and ground. If voltage is more than 4 volts, repair short to voltage in CCD BUS negative circuit. Perform TEST VER-1. If voltage is less than 4 volts, 6replace scan tool cable or cartridge as necessary. Perform TEST VER-1.

TEST 8B - SHORT TO 5 VOLTS

If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair CCD BUS negative circuit shorted to Violet/White wire. Perform TEST VER-1. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-1.

Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance at instrument cluster connector, ground circuit (Black/Light Green wire). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open Black/Light Green wire. Perform TEST VER-1. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace MIC or EIC. Perform TEST VER-1.

TEST 8F - SHORT TO 5 VOLTS

Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance between Body Control Module (BCM) Blue connector terminals No. 1, left front door ajar switch sense circuit (Tan wire), and No. 7, CCD BUS positive circuit (Violet/Brown wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair Tan wire shorted to Violet/Brown wire. Perform TEST VER-1. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, check resistance between BCM Blue connector terminals No. 1, left front door ajar switch sense circuit (Tan wire), and No. 20, CCD BUS negative circuit (White/Black wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair Tan wire shorted to White/Black wire. Perform TEST VER-1. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, check resistance between BCM Blue connector terminals No. 2, key-in ignition switch sense circuit (Light Blue wire), and No. 7, CCD BUS positive circuit (Violet/Brown wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair Light Blue wire shorted to Violet/Brown wire. Perform TEST VER-1. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, check resistance between BCM Blue connector terminals No. 2, key-in ignition switch sense circuit (Light Blue wire), and No. 20, CCD BUS negative circuit (White/Black wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair Light Blue wire shorted to White/Black wire. Perform TEST VER-1. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair Light Green/Red wire shorted to Violet/Brown wire. Perform TEST VER-1. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, check resistance between BCM Blue connector terminals No. 14, seat belt switch sense circuit (Light Green/Red wire), and No. 20, CCD BUS negative circuit (White/Black wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair Light Green/Red wire shorted to White/Black wire. Perform TEST VER-1. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, check resistance between BCM case and ground using scan tool in ohmmeter mode. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair BCM case ground. Perform TEST VER-1. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, check resistance between BCM Blue connector terminal No. 19, ground circuit (Black/Light Green wire), and ground. If resistance is more than 15 ohms, repair open Black/Light Green wire. Perform TEST VER-1. If resistance is less than 15 ohms, replace BCM. Perform TEST VER-1.

Perform TEST VER-1. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO GROUND, turn ignition off. Disconnect Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) module connector, if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO GROUND, replace VTSS module. Perform TEST VER-1. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO GROUND, turn ignition off. Disconnect compass/mini-trip module connector, if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO GROUND, replace compass/mini-trip module. Perform TEST VER-1. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO GROUND, turn ignition off. Disconnect Infinity premium radio, if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO GROUND, replace radio/CD player. Perform TEST VER-1. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO GROUND, turn ignition off. Wait 5 minutes before proceeding. Disconnect Air Bag Control Module (ACM) connector, if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO GROUND, replace ACM. Perform TEST VER-1. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO GROUND, turn ignition off. Disconnect Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) module connector, if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO GROUND, replace ATC module. Perform TEST VER-1. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO GROUND, turn ignition off. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance between DLC, CCD BUS positive circuit (Violet/Brown wire) and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in CCD BUS positive circuit. Perform TEST VER-1. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, check resistance between DLC, CCD BUS negative circuit (White/Black wire) and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in CCD BUS negative circuit. Perform TEST VER-1. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace scan tool cable or cartridge as necessary. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage at Controller Anti-Lock Brake (CAB) module connector terminal No. 41, pedal travel sensor return circuit (Red/Black wire). If voltage is more than 10 volts, repair short to voltage in Red/Black wire and replace CAB module. Perform TEST VER-1. If voltage is less than 10 volts, replace CAB module. Perform TEST VER-1.

TEST 10A - BUS + & BUS - SHORTED TOGETHER

Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance between DLC, CCD BUS positive circuit (Violet/Brown wire) and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair CCD BUS wires for shorting together. Perform TEST VER-1. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace scan tool cable or cartridge as necessary. Perform TEST VER-1.

If scan tool displays NOT RECEIVING BUS MESSAGES CORRECTLY, replace scan tool cable or cartridge as necessary. Perform TEST VER-1.

TEST VER-1 - VERIFICATION PROCEDURE

  1. Ensure ignition is off and scan tool is connected. Reconnect all previously disconnected components and connectors. Turn ignition on. If scan tool screen is blank, go to TEST 2A. If scan tool screen is not blank, go to next step.
  2. If there is a BUS failure message on scan tool, go to TEST 1A. If there is no BUS failure message on scan tool, select module in question. If scan tool shows NO RESPONSE, return to appropriate diagnostic article and perform indicated test.
  3. If scan tool does not show NO RESPONSE, inspect vehicle for original complaint. If original complaint is present, return to appropriate diagnostic article and perform indicated test. If original complaint is not present, repair is complete.
