INTRODUCTION
Vehicles equipped with engine or transmission computers may require a relearn procedure after the vehicle battery is disconnected. Vehicle computers memorize and store vehicle operation patterns for optimum driveability and performance. When the vehicle battery is disconnected, this memory is lost. Default data is used until new data from each key start is stored. As the computer restores its memory from each new key start, driveability is restored.
Driveability problems may occur during the relearn stage. Depending on the vehicle and how it is equipped, the following driveability problems may exist
- Rough or unstable idle.
- Hesitation or stumble.
- Rich or lean running.
- Poor fuel mileage.
- Harsh or poor transmission shift quality.
To accelerate relearn process after battery removal and installation, vehicle should be road tested in the following manner
- Vehicle at normal operating temperature (cooling fan cycles).
- Accelerate at normal throttle position (20-50%).
- Cruise at light to medium throttle.
- Decelerate to a stop, downshifting and using brakes normally.
Manufacturers identify specific relearn procedures. See RELEARN PROCEDURES . Always complete the procedure before returning the vehicle to the customer.
Note. If repairs other than battery replacement have been made to late model vehicles, always refer to verification tests in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTIC TESTS article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section below.

THEFT ALARM RELEARN PROCEDURE
- Theft alarm relearn is necessary whenever battery is disconnected or dead battery is boosted. If battery is connected or boosted without conducting relearn procedure, alarm system will enter power-up mode and vehicle will not start.
- Before reconnecting battery or connecting booster, insert door key into driver side door lock. Connect battery cable(s) and cycle driver side door lock once. Vehicle may now be started. On some models, horn will sound 3 times to indicate theft system is activated.
Note. If Single Board Engine Controller or Powertrain Control Module (SBEC or PCM) is replaced, theft alarm system will not operate for minimum of 20 engine starts.
SHIFT QUALITY QUICK-LEARN PROCEDURE
- This procedure quickly optimizes shift quality. Procedure must be performed after disconnecting battery or loss of voltage supply to Transaxle Control Module (TCM), replacing TCM, transaxle internal components, solenoid assembly or torque converter.
- Chrysler's Diagnostic Readout Box (DRB) scan tool with proper cartridge must be used to perform shift quality quick-learn procedure. The following conditions must be met when performing shift quality quick-learn procedure: oil temperature must be greater than 60°F (16°C), brakes must be applied when indicated, engine speed greater than 500 RPM, throttle angle less than 3 degrees, gearshift must be moved only when indicated, gearshift must remain in overdrive as indicated until DRB indicates procedure is completed.
- If unused replacement TCM is installed on vehicle with engine at normal operating temperature, shift quality quick-learn procedure will cause TCM to indicate a cold oil temperature. Oil temperature must be monitored with DRB.
- If oil temperature is less than 60°F (16°C), allow engine to idle until oil temperature is greater than 60°F (16°C). If oil temperature is greater than 200°F (94°C), allow transaxle to cool until oil temperature is less than 200°F (94°C).
- Connect DRB to data link connector, located near brake pedal at bottom of instrument panel. Using proper cartridge and DRB manufacture's instructions, move through program to enter 41TE/AE menu. Start vehicle. Select ADJUSTMENTS function.
- Apply brakes. Select QUICK-LEARN function. Place gearshift in Neutral and then "OD" (overdrive) when indicated. Wait until TEST COMPLETE is indicated on DRB. Place gearshift in Park. Release brakes. Remove DRB.
PINION FACTOR PROCEDURE
- Pinion factor procedure must be performed if Transaxle Control Module (TCM) is replaced or changed from one vehicle to another. Procedure must be used to calibrate TCM for different equipment combinations to provide speedometer operation and correct readings. Failure to perform this procedure will result in no speedometer operation. NOTE: It may be necessary to consult manufacturer to determine Final Drive Ration (FDR) number when performing pinion factor procedure.
- Connect DRB to data link connector, located near brake pedal at bottom of instrument panel. Using proper cartridge and DRB manufacture's instructions, move through program to enter 41TE/AE menu. Select ADJUSTMENTS function.
- Select PINION FACTOR function. Select appropriate Final Drive Ratio (FDR) number and then the tire size. Remove DRB. Road test vehicle and verify speedometer operation.
