DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
| WARNING | Vehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicle, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior and exterior of vehicle, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See appropriate AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. |
The shift interlock system consists of an electro-magnetic solenoid mounted on upper steering column. (Scheme 1) Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) solenoid is controlled by the Front Control Module (FCM). The FCM is connected to underhood fuse and relay center creating the Intelligent Power Module (IPM). IPM is located in left front corner of engine compartment. (Scheme 2) With ignition switch in LOCK or ACC position, the gearshift lever is locked in Park. Depressing brake pedal with ignition switch in ON/RUN or START positions de-energizes BTSI solenoid. Solenoid plunger disengages shift lever pawl and allows gearshift lever to be moved to any position. (Scheme 3)
A conventional mechanical interlock system is also used. System manually prohibits gearshift lever movement when ignition switch is in LOCK or ACC positions. Solenoid does not function in these positions. Gearshift lever can be moved with ignition switch in OFF position. This enables vehicle to moved in the event the battery is dead or removed. Shift interlock system prevents ignition switch from being rotated to LOCK or ACC position unless gearshift lever is returned to Park.

PRELIMINARY INSPECTION
Diagnosis of shift interlock system should begin with a general visual inspection of related components, i.e., shift linkage, electrical connections, components, etc.
SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK
- Ensure ignition key can only be removed from ignition switch with gearshift lever in Park.
- Ensure gearshift lever is in Park with gearshift lever handle in released position. Ignition switch should rotate freely from OFF position to LOCK position. Ignition switch should not rotate to LOCK position with gearshift lever in any other position.
- Shifting from Park should be possible when ignition switch is in OFF position and brake pedal is depressed.
- Shifting from Park should not be possible while pulling rearward on gearshift lever handle unless brake pedal is depressed with ignition switch in ON/RUN or START position.
- Gearshift lever should be locked in Park when ignition switch is in ACC or LOCK positions. Gearshift lever should be able to be moved into any position with ignition switch in OFF position.
- With ignition switch in ON/RUN or START position, gearshift lever should be able to be moved into any position including Park without depressing brake pedal.
- If system operation is not as specified, solenoid may be malfunctioning. Diagnose and repair as necessary. See «SYMPTOM TESTS»(/dodge/grand-caravan/iv-2000-2007/remont/automatic-trans/#shift-interlock-systems__symptom-tests) .

BRAKE SHIFT INTERLOCK OUTPUT OPEN
Note. For circuit reference, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION and/or WIRING DIAGRAMS .
Possible Causes
The following items are possible cause for open brake shift interlock output
- Poor or faulty component connections.
- Open brake shift interlock control circuit.
- Open brake shift interlock feed circuit.
- Faulty brake shift interlock solenoid.
- Faulty front control module.
Diagnostic Procedure
- Turn ignition switch to ON/RUN position. Using scan tool, record and erase Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC). Turn ignition switch to OFF, then LOCK position. Turn ignition switch to ON/RUN position. Using scan tool, read DTCs. If scan tool displays BRAKE SHIFT INTERLOCK OUTPUT OPEN, go to next step. If scan tool does not display BRAKE SHIFT INTERLOCK OUTPUT OPEN, go to step 8.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF, then LOCK position. Disconnect BTSI solenoid harness connector. (Scheme 1) Ensure connector terminals are free of corrosion or damage. Repair as necessary. Connect test light between battery voltage and brake shift interlock control circuit at terminal No. 1 on harness connector. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/dodge/grand-caravan/iv-2000-2007/remont/automatic-trans/#shift-interlock-systems__wiring-diagrams). If test light illuminates brightly, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate brightly, go to step 6.
- Connect test light between ground and brake shift interlock feed circuit at terminal No. 2 on harness connector. If test light illuminates brightly, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate brightly, go to step 5.
- Replace BTSI solenoid. See «BTSI SOLENOID»(/dodge/grand-caravan/iv-2000-2007/remont/automatic-trans/#shift-interlock-systems) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF, then LOCK position. Disconnect FCM harness connector. FCM is connected to ICM. (Scheme 2) Ensure connector terminals are free of corrosion or damage. Repair as necessary. Using DVOM, measure resistance of brake shift interlock feed circuit between terminal No. 27 on FCM harness connector (connector on IPM) and terminal No. 2 on BTSI harness connector. (Scheme 6) If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or greater, repair open or high resistance in circuit.
- Measure resistance of brake shift interlock control circuit between terminal No. 47 on FCM harness connector (connector on IPM) and terminal No. 1 on BTSI harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or greater, repair open or high resistance in circuit.
- Replace FCM. See «FRONT CONTROL MODULE»(/dodge/grand-caravan/iv-2000-2007/remont/automatic-trans/#shift-interlock-systems) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- System is currently functioning correctly. Symptom may be caused by intermittent condition. Check all applicable connectors. See «CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION»(/dodge/grand-caravan/iv-2000-2007/remont/automatic-trans/#shift-interlock-systems) and «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/dodge/grand-caravan/iv-2000-2007/remont/automatic-trans/#shift-interlock-systems__wiring-diagrams). Wiggle wiring and check for loose or damaged connections. Repair as necessary and retest system. If no problems are found, repair is complete.
ADJUSTMENTS
Note. Brake transmission shift interlock system components are not adjustable. Replace components as necessary. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION .
STOPLIGHT SWITCH
Note. Stoplight switch may also be known as brakelight switch.
| CAUTION | Do not use excessive force when pulling brake pedal upward, or stoplight switch may be damaged. |
Press and hold brake pedal to fully applied position. Pull stoplight switch plunger to fully extended position. Release brake pedal and pull pedal fully rearward. Pedal will set plunger to correct position as pedal pushes plunger into switch body. Switch will make a ratcheting sound as plunger adjusts into switch. Check stoplight switch operation.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See appropriate COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. |
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove instrument panel knee bolster pad and reinforcement located under steering column. Remove steering column lower shroud. (Scheme 4) Disconnect BTSI solenoid connector.
- Remove both solenoid-to-column screws. Remove BTSI solenoid. To install solenoid, reverse removal procedure. Place BTSI solenoid into position ensuring hook on end of solenoid plunger engages gearshift lever pawl pin. Ensure gearshift lever is in PARK before connecting solenoid connector.

- Disconnect negative battery cable. Front Control Module (FCM) is mounted to front of Intelligent Power Module (IPM). (Scheme 2) Remove battery from vehicle. Using a long, flat-blade screwdriver, carefully pry IPM retaining clips to allow IPM to be rotated upward to access FCM.
- Remove screws retaining FCM to IPM. Using both hands, pull FCM straight out from IPM connector until FCM is clear of IPM. Remove FCM from vehicle. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten FCM retaining screws to 7 INCH lbs. (1 N.m).
Note. Stoplight switch may also be known as brakelight switch.
- Stoplight switch is located in mounting bracket near top of brake pedal. Rotate stoplight switch counterclockwise 30 degrees and remove switch from mounting bracket. Disconnect electrical connector from stoplight switch.
- Pull plunger on stoplight switch outward until plunger has ratcheted outward to fully extended position. Fully depress brake pedal. Install stoplight switch in mounting bracket so index tab on stoplight switch aligns with slot in mounting bracket.
- With stoplight switch fully seated in mounting bracket, rotate stoplight switch 30 degrees to lock stoplight switch in mounting bracket. Reinstall electrical connector on stoplight switch.
