DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), or air bag system, is designed to work in conjunction with 3-point seat belts. SRS is a dual system consisting of driver-side and passenger-side air bags. SRS provides increased accident protection for driver and front passenger by deploying air bags in a front-end collision.
System consists of an AIR BAG warning light, clockspring, driver-side air bag module, passenger-side air bag module and Air Bag Control Module (ACM) containing an impact sensor.
ACM monitors system, stores fault codes (messages), and provides information to AIR BAG warning light and ACM data link connector.
An impact sensor is located inside of ACM. Impact sensor is an accelerometer that senses deceleration. When an impact is severe enough to require air bag protection, deceleration pulses are sent to a microprocessor located within ACM. ACM then sends a signal that completes electrical circuit through driver and passenger-side air bags. This causes inflators to be actuated, producing a large quantity of gas and inflating air bags.
