Heater System: Overview Dodge Caravan III

Heater 1 illustration ~289 words

Heater system is a blend air type. Outside air enters heater system through cowl grille and passes through plenum chamber to heater unit. Blend-air door, located inside heater unit, routes incoming air through or past heater core. Amount of blended air is controlled by temperature control lever. Air distribution is controlled by mode selection and blower speed.

WARNINGTo avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and follow all SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM procedures in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article in the ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT section.

Some FWD vans are equipped with a rear-mounted auxiliary heater unit. Auxiliary heater unit is located in right rear quarter panel. Auxiliary rear heater blower can be manually operated by rear occupant. Auxiliary heater rear blower operates in conjunction with 4-position blower (override) switch located on instrument panel.

Regardless of rear heater control manual setting, driver can use instrument panel rear heater blower switch to operate rear blower at high or low speed. (Scheme 1) Rear heater control will not function when instrument panel rear heater blower switch is in OFF position. Temperature is regulated by coolant flow through heater control valve to auxiliary unit. Air is drawn into rear heater unit from inside vehicle. Blower motor passes air through heater core and circulates heated air out duct vents.

Mode switch on heater control panel allows selection of airflow direction. A temperature control lever adjusts amount of warm air entering system. Heat Vent Air Conditioner (HVAC) control uses resistors in the mode switch and temperature control to determine airflow and temperature. Blower switch on control panel has 5 blower speed selections. (Scheme 1)

Auxiliary rear heater unit has its own blower speed control switch. It is operational only when instrument panel rear heater switch in on. (Scheme 1) When instrument panel blower switch is on, rear blower motor can be controlled by auxiliary rear heater blower switch.
