Power Windows - Side Dodge Caravan I

DESCRIPTION

The electric window system consists of motors in each door, switches, wiring harnesses and necessary connections. Motors are permanent magnet type.

A positive or negative battery connection to either motor terminal will cause the motor to rotate in one direction. Reversing current will cause motor to rotate in opposite direction. Each motor is grounded through the master switch.

SWITCH VOLTAGE

  1. Remove switch from trim panel. Separate multiple terminal block on wiring harness from switch body. Connect one lead of test light to battery wire terminal. Battery wire terminal is Black. Connect other lead to ground wire terminal. Ground wire terminal is Tan.
  2. If test light comes on, wiring between battery and switch is okay. If light does not light, check 30-amp circuit breaker in fuse block, broken wire or poor ground.

Scheme 1

Scheme 1: MOTOR SWITCH
  1. Check operation of lift motor by connecting a jumper wire between switch connector terminals on left main switch. (Scheme 1) If failure is in right side door, connect a jumper wire on right side switch connector. If failure is in left door, it is not necessary to disconnect or jump right side switch.
  2. If motor operates using jumper wires, a bad switch is the cause of failure. If motor does not operate using jumper wires, perform «LIFT MOTOR»(/dodge/caravan/i-1984-1990/remont/windows/#power-windows-side__lift-motor) test.

LIFT MOTOR

  1. Connect positive lead of test battery to either motor terminal. Connect negative lead to remaining terminal. Motor should now rotate in one direction to move window up or down.
  2. If window is in up position and leads are connected so motor rotates in up direction, no movement should occur. Also, if leads are connected so motor rotates in down direction, and window is already down, no movement should occur.
  3. Reverse battery leads. Window should now move in desired direction. If not, remove motor and replace. If motor moved window, reverse leads again and ensure motor moves window in both directions.

Removal

Remove trim panel and liner. Remove glass from door. Disconnect electrical regulator at wiring harness and remove clip from inside panel. Remove regulator attaching rivets. Remove 2 screws at sill. Rotate and remove regulator through access hole.

Installation

Mount regulator to door panel with 1/4" - 20 x 1/2" screws and nuts. Tighten to 90 INCH lbs. (10 N.m). Ensure rivets are replaced.

Remove regulator as previously outlined. Remove motor attaching screws and motor. Remove counterbalance spring, 3 motor attaching screws and motor.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Note that counterbalance spring must be installed after motor is attached to regulator.
