DESCRIPTION

Chrysler electronic regulators contain several semiconductor components, resistors, transistors and a capacitor. A large transistor is placed in series with alternator field winding and a control circuit which senses system voltage and turns transistor on and off as required. The unit has no moving parts and requires no adjustment after it is set at factory.

OPERATION

The electronic voltage regulator controls charging system voltage by regulating current generated by alternator. Voltage regulation is accomplished by governing the amount of current that is allowed to pass through alternator field winding.

As alternator speed and electrical system load conditions change, control circuit is turning transistor on and off many times per second during most engine operation. The only time the transistor will slow significantly is during low RPM when high electrical loads are present. This requires the alternator field to be in the "ON" state continuously. Electronic regulator control circuit will also vary voltage regulation as temperatures change.

ADJUSTMENTS

The Electronic Voltage Regulator cannot be adjusted. If specifications are not obtained and diagnosis shows the rest of electrical system to be satisfactory, regulator should be replaced.

TROUBLE SHOOTING

TESTING

Note. If Tester (C-4133) is used, follow manufacturer's test procedure.

  1. Battery specific gravity should be above 1.220 for a properly regulated voltage check. Charge battery or use a good test battery before testing regulator. Ensure all test connections are clean and tight.
  2. Connect voltmeter positive lead to positive post on battery and negative lead to ground. Set engine to 1250 RPM with all lights and accessories turned off. Regulator is operational, if voltage readings are within specifications. Refer to the «VOLTAGE REGULATOR SPECIFICATIONS»(/dodge/caravan/i-1984-1990/remont/charging-system/#voltage-regulator) table.
  3. If voltage is fluctuating or out of specification, check regulator ground for clean, tight connection. Turn engine off and disconnect regulator wiring harness connector. Inspect connector for corrosion or damage
  4. Turn ignition switch to the "ON" position. Battery voltage should be present at both regulator harness connector terminals. If so, replace voltage regulator and repeat test. If no voltage is available at connector, check wiring harness for open or short circuit.
