  1. DTC IS ACTIVE NOTE: If there are any ASD Relay or system voltage DTCs present, diagnose those DTCs before proceeding with this test procedure. Ignition on, engine not running. With the scan tool, select View DTCs. Copy DTC and Freeze Frame information and clear DTCs. NOTE: Active or pending DTCs may not allow A/C clutch actuation, make sure all DTCs are cleared before proceeding with this test procedure. With the scan tool, actuate the A/C Compressor. Monitor the scan tool for at least two minutes. With the scan tool, select View DTCs. Is the status Active for this DTC? Yes Go To 2 . No Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to «INTERMITTENT CONDITION»(ref-485569-S42017838552012071300000) .
  2. (C13) A/C CLUTCH RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the TIPM C1 harness connector. Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector. Measure the resistance between ground and the (C13) A/C Clutch Relay Control circuit in the PCM C1 harness connector. Is the resistance below 100 Ohms? Yes Repair the short to ground in the (C13) A/C Clutch Relay Control circuit. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to «POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-485569-S42845253072012071300000) . No Go To 3 .
  3. (C13) A/C CLUTCH CONTROL CIRCUIT OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE Measure the resistance of the (C13) A/C Clutch Control circuit between the TIPM C1 harness connector and the PCM C1 harness connector. Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms? Yes Go To 4 . No Repair the open or high resistance in the (C13) A/C Clutch Control circuit. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to «POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-485569-S42845253072012071300000) .
  4. TOTALLY INTEGRATED POWER MODULE (TIPM) ACTUATION Reconnect the TIPM C1 harness connector. Turn the ignition on. Connect a jumper between ground and the (C13) A/C Clutch Relay Control circuit at the PCM C1 harness connector. NOTE: The A/C Compressor Clutch should engage when the (C13) A/C Clutch Relay Control circuit is jumped to ground. Did the A/C Compressor Clutch engage when the (C13) A/C Clutch Relay Control circuit is jumped to ground? Yes Go To 6 . No Go To 5 .
  5. TOTALLY INTEGRATED POWER MODULE (TIPM) Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched or partially broken wires. Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the related connectors. Perform any Technical Service Bulletins that may apply. Were any problems found? Yes Repair as necessary. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to «POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-485569-S42845253072012071300000) . No Replace and program the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) in accordance with the Service Information. Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to «STANDARD PROCEDURE»(ref-485529-S24369246162012071300000) .
  6. POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched or partially broken wires. Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the related connectors. Perform any Technical Service Bulletins that may apply. Were any problems found? Yes Repair as necessary. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST.   1. ACTIVE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) NOTE: Improperly installed aftermarket accessories can cause this DTC to set. Check for any improperly installed aftermarket accessories before continuing with this test. Turn the ignition on for at least 60 seconds. With a scan tool, read the active DTCs. Is the DTC Active at this time? Yes Go To 2 . No Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to «INTERMITTENT CONDITION»(ref-485569-S42017838552012071300000) .
  2. (F856) 5-VOLT SUPPLY SHORTED TO GROUND Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the PCM harness connectors. Disconnect the APP Sensor harness connector. Disconnect all the Sensors that share the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit. Measure the resistance between ground and the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit in the MAP Sensor harness connector. Is the resistance above 1000 Ohms? Yes Go To 3 . No Repair the short to ground in the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to «POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-485569-S42845253072012071300000) .
  3. (K854) 5-VOLT SUPPLY SHORTED TO GROUND Measure the resistance between ground and the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit in the MAP Sensor harness connector. Is the resistance above 1000 Ohms? Yes Go To 4 . No Repair the short to ground in the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to «POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-485569-S42845253072012071300000) .
  4. CMP SENSOR 1 Turn the ignition off. Reconnect all the previously disconnected Sensors except for the CMP Sensor 1 harness connector. Ignition on, engine not running. Measure the voltage on the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit in the CMP Sensor harness connector. Is the voltage below 4.75 Volts? Yes Go To 5 . No Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the CMP Sensor 1 and Powertrain Control Module connectors. If OK, replace the Camshaft Position Sensor 1. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to «POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-485569-S42845253072012071300000) .
  5. CMP SENSOR 2 Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the CMP Sensor 2 harness connector. Ignition on, engine not running. Measure the voltage on the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit in the CMP Sensor 2 harness connector. Is the voltage below 4.75 Volts? Yes Go To 6 . No Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the CMP Sensor and Powertrain Control Module connectors. If OK, replace the Camshaft Position Sensor 2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to «POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-485569-S42845253072012071300000) .
  6. MAP SENSOR Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the MAP Sensor harness connector. Ignition on, engine not running. Measure the voltage on the (F856) 5-Volt Supply circuit in the MAP Sensor harness connector. Is the voltage below 4.75 Volts? Yes Go To 7 . No Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the MAP Sensor and Powertrain Control Module connectors. If OK, replace the MAP Sensor. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to «POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-485569-S42845253072012071300000) .
  7. ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION SENSOR Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the APP Sensor harness connector. Turn the ignition on. Measure the voltage at the (K854) 5-Volt Supply circuit at the APP Sensor harness connector. Is the voltage below 4.75 Volts? Yes Go To 8 . No Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor and Powertrain Control Module connectors. If OK, replace the Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to «POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-485569-S42845253072012071300000) .
  8. POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the related Sensors and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). No Go To 3 .
  3. (K854) 5-VOLT SUPPLY SHORTED TO VOLTAGE Measure the voltage at the (K854) 5-Volt Supply circuit at the APP Sensor harness connector. Is the voltage reading above 5.2 Volts? Yes Repair the short to voltage in the (K854) 5-Volt Supply circuit. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to «POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-485569-S42845253072012071300000) . No Go To 4 .

  1. CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS Turn the ignition on. With the scan tool, check for additional DTCs. Are other DTCs present? Yes Perform the diagnostics for the other DTCs before continuing. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to «POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-485569-S42845253072012071300000) . No Go To 2 .
  2. CLEAR CODE AND CHECK IF THE DTC RESETS With the scan tool, erase PCM DTCs. Perform several ignition key cycles, pausing for at least 10 seconds between each cycle. Turn the ignition on. With the scan tool, read PCM DTCs. Did this DTC Return? Yes Go To 3 . No Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to «INTERMITTENT CONDITION»(ref-485569-S42017838552012071300000) .
  3. SUBSTITUTE THE ASD RELAY Turn the ignition off. Install a known good relay in place of the ASD Relay. Turn the ignition on. With the scan tool, erase PCM DTCs. Perform several ignition key cycles, pausing for at least 10.0 seconds between each cycle. Turn the ignition on. With the scan tool, read PCM DTCs. Did this DTC return? Yes Go To 4 . No Replace the ASD Relay in accordance with the service information. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to «POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-485569-S42845253072012071300000) .
  4. CHECK PCM POWER AND GROUNDS Using the wiring information, check the PCM battery, ignition feed and ground circuits. Were any problem found with the PCM powers and grounds? Yes Repair as necessary. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to «POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-485569-S42845253072012071300000) . No Go To 5 .
  5. CHECK THE (K51) ASD RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Reconnect the PCM harness connectors. Turn the ignition off. Remove the ASD Relay. Turn the ignition on. Measure the voltage an the (K51) ASD Relay Control circuit at terminal 85 of the ASD Relay connector. Is there any voltage present? Yes Repair the (K51) ASD Relay Control circuit for a short to voltage. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to «POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-485569-S42845253072012071300000) . No Go To 6 .
  6. CHECK THE (K51) ASD RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Turn the ignition off. Remove the ASD Relay. Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector. Measure the resistance an the (K51) ASD Relay Control circuit at terminal 85 of the ASD Relay connector. Is the resistance above 10k Ohms? Yes Go To 7 . No Repair the (K51) ASD Relay Control circuit for a short to ground. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to «POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-485569-S42845253072012071300000) .
  7. CHECK THE (K51) ASD RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE Measure the resistance of the (K51) ASD Relay Control circuit between the PCM C1 harness connector and the ASD Relay connector. Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms? Yes Repair the ASD Relay Control circuit for an open or high resistance. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to «POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-485569-S42845253072012071300000) . No Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module in accordance with the Service Information. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detects an open or short to ground in the (K51) ASD Relay control circuit. One Trip Fault. Three good trips to turn off the MIL.

VERIFY ASD DTC NOTE: If any O2 SENSOR HEATER CIRCUIT HIGH DTCs set along with P0688-AUTO SHUTDOWN RELAY SENSE CIRCUIT LOW, all of the O2 Sensor Heater Control circuits need to be checked for a short to battery voltage. NOTE: If any of the following component DTCs have set along with P0688, diagnose them first before continuing. Ignition Coil(s) Fuel Injector(s) ASD Control ASD Control Output (TIPM DTC) With the scan tool, erase the DTC. Attempt to start the engine. If the engine will not start, crank the engine for at least 15 seconds. It may be necessary to repeat several times. Does the DTC return? Yes Go To 2 . No Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to «INTERMITTENT CONDITION»(ref-485569-S42017838552012071300000) .
  2. ASD RELAY Turn the ignition off. Install a substitute relay in place of the ASD Relay. Ignition on, engine not running. With the scan tool, erase DTCs. Attempt to start the engine. With the scan tool, select View DTCs. Does the DTC return? Yes Go To 3 . No Replace the ASD Relay in accordance with the service information. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to «POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-485569-S42845253072012071300000) .
  3. (K51) ASD RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT OPEN Turn the ignition off. Remove the ASD Relay. Disconnect the C1 PCM harness connector. Measure the resistance of the (K51) ASD Relay Control circuit from the Relay connection to the PCM C1 harness connector. Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms? Yes Go To 4 . No Repair the open in the (K51) ASD Relay Control circuits. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to «POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-485569-S42845253072012071300000) .
  4. CHECK THE (K51) ASD RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Measure the resistance an the (K51) ASD Relay Control circuit at terminal 85 of the PCM C1 harness connector. Is the resistance above 10k Ohms? Yes Go To 5 . No Repair the (K51) ASD Relay Control circuit for a short to ground. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST.   5. (A14) FUSED B+ CIRCUITS Turn the ignition off. Using a 12-Volt test light connected to ground, probe the (A14) Fused B+ circuits at the Relay connection. NOTE: The test light should be illuminated and bright. Compare the brightness to that of a direct connection to the battery. Does the test light illuminate brightly? Yes Go To 6 . No Repair the open or short to ground in the (A14) Fused B+ circuits. Inspect the related fuse and repair as necessary. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST.
