ENGINE IDENTIFICATION
Note. For engine repair procedures not covered in this article, see ENGINE OVERHAUL PROCEDURES - GENERAL INFORMATION article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section.
Engine may be identified from the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). VIN is stamped on Gray metal tab located on upper left corner of the instrument panel, near the windshield. The Engine Identification Number is located on the left side of the block between the core plug and rear of block (radiator side of vehicle). The engine serial number is located on the right side of the block adjacent to the exhaust manifold stud. In addition, the VIN code appears as part of production or unit number stamped on right side of engine forward facing surface, below cylinder head. The VIN consists of 17 characters. The 8th character identifies engine and the 10th character establishes model year.

ENGINE IDENTIFICATION CODES
VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT
Note. After overhaul or other service procedures, perform all intake, exhaust and jet valve adjustments AFTER checking hot torque on cylinder head bolts. Adjust jet valve clearance BEFORE adjusting intake valve clearance. Incorrect jet valve clearance can affect emission levels and could cause engine problems.
Jet Valve
- Warm engine until coolant temperature reaches 176-196°F (80-90°C). Position No. 4 piston at TDC of compression stroke. Back off intake valve adjusting screw 2 or more turns.
- Loosen lock nut on jet valve adjusting screw. Turn screw counterclockwise and insert feeler gauge between jet valve stem and adjusting screw. Hot jet valve clearance is .006" (.15 mm).
- Tighten adjusting screw until it touches feeler gauge. Since jet valve spring is weak in tensile strength, be careful not to force jet valve in. Use special care if it becomes difficult to turn adjusting screw.
- Tighten lock nut securely, while holding rocker arm adjusting screw with screwdriver (to prevent it from turning). Be sure .006" (.15 mm) feeler gauge is easily inserted. Adjust intake valve clearance and check idle setting.
Intake And Exhaust Valve
- Be sure engine is warm. Position piston at TDC of compression stroke and loosen valve adjuster lock nut. Adjust valve clearance by turning adjusting screw while measuring clearance with feeler gauge. Repeat for each cylinder.
- Hot engine settings are .006" (.15 mm) for intake valves and .010" (.25 mm) for exhaust valves. After adjustment, tighten lock nut securely while holding adjusting screw with screwdriver.

VALVE ARRANGEMENT
ENGINE REMOVAL

Removal
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system and disconnect cooling hose from water pump to intake manifold. Remove crankcase vent, heater hoses and upper radiator hose. Remove air cleaner and duct assembly. Remove accelerator cable connections and carburetor-to-valve cover bracket.
- Remove air conditioning compressor mount bolts and set compressor aside (if equipped). DO NOT discharge air conditioning system. Remove power steering mount bolts and set pump aside (if equipped). Disconnect vacuum hoses (including brake booster and distributor). Disconnect and remove spark plug wires. Remove distributor. Remove fuel lines and fuel pump.
- Remove mounting bolts. Remove intake manifold and carburetor as an assembly. Remove carburetor from intake manifold.
Installation
Clean manifold mating surface and inspect for cracks and warpage. Manifold should be flat within .006" (.015 mm). To install, reverse removal procedure.
- Disconnect battery. Remove air cleaner and power steering pump. Raise vehicle and disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold. Disconnect air injection tube assembly from exhaust manifold and lower vehicle. Remove air injection tube from air pump.
- Remove heat cowl from exhaust manifold. Remove exhaust manifold nuts and remove assembly from vehicle. Remove carburetor air heater from manifold. Remove retaining bolts holding exhaust manifold and front catalytic converter together.
- Clean manifold gasket surfaces. Check mating surfaces for warpage. Surface should be flat within .006" (.015 mm). Inspect catalytic converter assembly for cracks or distortion. Replace if damaged. Install new gasket between exhaust manifold and front catalytic converter. Tighten to 24 ft. lbs. (32 N.m).
- To install, reverse removal procedure and note the following: Install new manifold gasket with a light coat of sealer on cylinder head side. Install manifold assembly and tighten 4 CENTER mounting nuts to 150 INCH lbs. (17 N.m). Then tighten 4 outboard mouting nuts to 150 INCH lbs. (17 N.m). DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Remove intake and exhaust manifolds as previously described. Remove spark plug cables and distributor. Remove valve cover, breather and semi-circular packing. Remove water pump drive pulley cover. Remove water pump belt and pulley.
- Turn crankshaft until No. 1 piston is at TDC of compression stroke. Using White paint, draw mating marks on timing chain in line with timing mark on camshaft sprocket.
- Remove camshaft sprocket bolt, washer, distributor drive gear and sprocket. From under vehicle, disconnect air feeder hoses. Separate power steering pump (if equipped) from bracket and set aside.
- Remove ground wire and dipstick tube. Loosen cylinder head bolts in steps (with engine at room temperature) to prevent warpage. Remove cylinder head bolts in sequence (Scheme 1)and lift off with gasket.

Scheme 2
- Clean gasket surfaces of cylinder block and head. Check head for flatness with straight edge. Cylinder head must be flat within the following limits: Standard dimension is.002" (.05 mm) and service limit is.004" (.1 mm).
- Install new cylinder head gasket, using no sealant. Install the cylinder head assembly and tighten cylinder head bolts in the reverse order of that (Scheme 1)
- Temporarily set valve clearance to cold engine settings; then readjust to hot engine settings after engine is at normal operating temperature. Beginning with highest number head bolt first, tighten bolts in sequence in 2 stages.
- For cold engine, tighten first to 35 ft. lbs. (48 N.m) and then to 69 ft. lbs. (94 N.m). For hot engine, tighten additional step (in sequence) to 75 ft. lbs. (103 N.m).
- To complete installation, reverse removal procedure noting the following: Install the breather and semi-circular packing to cylinder head and apply sealant to points (Scheme 2) (Scheme 2): Installing Breather & Semi-Circular Seal
- Install valve cover with new gasket. Install new intake manifold gasket, using appropriate sealer on each side of gasket around water holes. Install air cleaner and breather hoses.
JET VALVES
Note. Make sure that jet valve socket wrench is not tilted with respect to center of valve. If tool is tilted, stem may be bent, resulting in defective valve operation and/or broken wrench. DO NOT disturb jet valve and body combinations. If defective, jet valve and body should be replaced as an assembly.
- To remove jet valve, use Jet Valve Socket (MD998310). Disassemble valve using Jet Valve Spring Compressor (MD998309). Compress spring and remove retainer locks and retainer. DO NOT mix parts of jet valve assembly.
- Retaining jet valve as complete assembly, remove valve stem and seal with pliers. Check valve head, valve seat, valve body and rocker arms for wear or damage. Ensure jet valve slides smoothly in body without play.
- Check jet valve and spring for the following specifications: Valve stem diameter is .1693" (4.3 mm). Face and seat angle is 45°. Jet valve spring free length is 1.165" (29.6 mm). Spring load is 5.5 lbs. @ .846" (2.5 kg @ 21.5 mm).
- When assembling, lubricate parts with engine oil. Compress spring and install retainer and locks. Install new "O" ring, lubricated with engine oil, on jet valve body.
- Install valve stem seal, using Jet Valve Seal Driver (MD998308). Install jet valve finger tight, then tighten to the proper INCH lb. specification.
Scheme 3
- With camshaft and rocker arm assemblies removed, use valve spring compressor and remove retainer locks. Remove all retainers, springs, spring seals and valves, keeping all parts in proper order for assembly. - Check valve spring free length and pressure. Check valve springs for out of square with 90° straight edge. Valve spring out of square service limit is.0625" (1.587 mm).
- If beyond specification, replace spring. Installed height of new intake or exhaust valve spring should be 1.590" (40.4 mm). If more than 1.629" (41.4 mm), replace spring.
Valve Guide Servicing
- Check valve stem-to-guide clearance. If clearance exceeds service limits, replace valve guide. To check valve guide wear, insert valve with valve head positioned.40" (10 mm) above cylinder head gasket surface.
- Attach dial indicator to cylinder head. Position indicator probe against valve head at right angle to valve stem. Move valve in guide and measure guide wear shown on dial indicator.
- If clearance is excessive, guides should be replaced. Maximum dial indicator reading for intake valve-to-guide wear is shown in table. Valve guide reamers are available for reconditioning guides.
- When reconditioning, always use next oversize reamer and replacement valve. Check valve seats for proper angle and seat width. Measure concentricity of valve seat using dial indicator. Total valve seat runout should not exceed.002" (.051 mm). Valve guides are available oversizes as shown in the chart.
- To replace guides proceed as follows: Heat cylinder head to approximately 480°F (250°C). Using valve guide remover, drive out each guide toward combustion chamber. Ream guide bore in cylinder head to specified size after head has cooled to room temperature.
- To install new guides, reheat head to same temperature as for removal. Quickly drive guides into head. (Scheme 4) Guides should protrude.539-.563" (13.7-14.3 mm) above head surface when properly installed. Check guide I.D. and ream as necessary.

Valve Stem Oil Seals
- Cylinder head must be removed from engine. After installing valve spring seat, lubricate new valve stem oil seal with engine oil and place on valve guide.
- Using Seal Installer (MD-998005), lightly tap seal into correct position as tool bottoms on head. DO NOT use old seals or twist seals when installing. (Scheme 5)

Valve Seat Servicing
- Check valve seat for damage or wear. Replace or rework seat, as necessary. If reworking seat, check valve guide first. Make proper replacement, if required, then check seat for necessary corrections.
- Recondition valve seat with grinder or cutter to specified contact width. After rework, valve and seat should be lapped with valve grinding compound.
- Valve seat sink (wear of seat inward allowing valve to seat too deep in head) must be checked by measuring installed height of valve spring. Measure between spring seat and retainer with all spring components installed.
- Remove valve seat by thinning down with cutter. Machine seat bore to proper size for replacement seat. Heat head to approximately 480°F (231°C) and press in oversize seat. Replacement seats are available in .012" and .024" oversizes, marked "30" and "60" respectively.
OIL PAN

- Remove cylinder head and oil pan. With piston at bottom of stroke, check top of cylinder bore for ridge. Cover piston with cloth to catch cuttings and remove ridge with ridge reamer.
- Mark piston and rod assemblies for installation in original locations. Check to be sure connecting rods and rod caps are arked for reassembly in their original locations.
- Rotate engine until connecting rod is straight down. Remove connecting rod caps and bearings. Push connecting rod and piston assembly upward through top of cylinder block.
- Lubricate all internal surfaces with engine oil before installing. Make sure arrows on top of pistons point toward timing chain. Matching marks on connecting rods and caps must align and be on right side of engine.
- Use ring compressor to compress rings (ensure piston ring end gaps are positioned properly). Apply light coat of engine oil to pistons and rings. Rotate crankshaft so connecting rod journal is at center of bore.
- Install rod bolt protectors before installing piston and rod assembly in bore. Tap lightly on piston dome with wooden hammer handle, while guiding connecting rod onto crankshaft. Install rod cap onto proper piston and connecting rod assembly. Tighten attaching bolts. Install cylinder head and oil pan.
FITTING PISTONS
- After checking block for distortion, cracks or scratches, measure cylinder bores at 3 levels (90° apart). Top and bottom levels should be .38" (10 mm) into cylinder.
- If any cylinder bore is distorted from standard size, block must be rebored and oversize pistons installed. Standard bore size is 3.59" (91.1 mm). Maximum out-of-round or taper is .0008" (.02 mm). NOTE: Pistons are available in standard, .010", .020", .030" and .039" oversizes. Oversize pistons are stamped on crown to indicate amount of oversize.
- Check outside diameter of piston by measuring at point .079" (2 mm) from bottom of skirt and 90° to pin bore (across thrust face). Determine amount of cylinder reboring required to meet specified clearance.
FITTING PISTON PINS
Note. When removing or installing piston pin, connecting rod should be in firm contact with body of pin setting tool.
- Inspect and replace any piston pin showing signs of fracture, etching or wear. Check piston pin-to-rod bore fit. Lubricate pin and small end of rod bore with engine oil.
- Set connecting rod and piston with arrow facing up and connecting rod marks properly located. Using guide bar and push rod, press piston pin into bore, using 1600-3800 lbs. (720-1710 kg) force at normal room temperature.
FITTING PISTON RINGS
Note. Upper and intermediate (No. 1 and No. 2) piston rings have the same thickness, but different cross section. Oil ring expander end gap should be at least 45° from side rail gaps, but not on piston pin center or on thrust direction.
Scheme 6
- Measure piston ring side and end gap clearance for all pistons, replace rings as necessary. Using a piston to position ring in cylinder bore, check ring end gap at least.63" (16 mm) from bottom of bore.
- Install rings on pistons with end gaps staggered at 120° intervals. Ensure ring gap is not in line with thrust face of pin bore. (Scheme 6) Be sure manufacturer's marks face up when rings are installed. (Scheme 6): Piston Ring End Gap Positions
- Install oil ring expander first, followed by upper oil ring side rail and lower side rail. DO NOT use ring expander on side rails. When installing upper side rail, place one end between piston ring groove and expander.
- Hold end firmly and press down portion to be installed until side rail is in position. Install lower side rail. Using ring expander, install intermediate and upper rings.
- Piston rings are available in standard,.010",.020",.030" and.039" oversize. Standard rings have no markings, but oversize rings are marked "25", "50", "75" and "100" respectively.
CRANKSHAFT & ROD BEARINGS
Note. The following procedures are performed with oil pan and oil pump removed. Whenever crankshaft must be rotated, access plug covering hole in right front fender inner splash shield should be removed. Socket, extension and ratchet may then reach crankshaft sprocket bolt to turn crankshaft.
Connecting Rod Bearings
- Inspect each bearing for peeling, melting, seizure or improper contact. Replace defective bearings. Measure outside diameter of crankshaft connecting rod bearing journals to determine if out-of-round or tapered.
- When checking connecting rod clearances, note that crankshaft does not have to be supported. Instead, turn crankshaft until connecting rod to be checked starts moving toward top of engine.
- Cut Plastigage to same length as width of rod bearing. Place it in bearing cap, parallel with crankshaft (not over oil holes). Install rod bearings and caps and tighten. Always install caps with arrow facing toward timing chain end.
- DO NOT turn crankshaft with Plastigage installed. Remove main bearing cap from crankshaft and measure Plastigage at its widest part (using scale on Plastigage package).
- If clearance exceeds specifications, replace bearing. Turn crankshaft to next undersize if correct clearance cannot be obtained. Undersize bearings are available in .010", .020" and .030" undersizes. After inspection and/or replacement, tighten rod bearing caps in three stages.

CONNECTING ROD JOURNALS
Note. No. 1 main bearing is at timing chain end and No. 5 bearing is at transmission end. When using Plastigage to check main bearings, remove weight from crankshaft by supporting counterweight with a jack or preferably by shimming adjacent bearings. DO NOT turn crankshaft with Plastigage installed.
Main Bearings
- Inspect each bearing for peeling, melting, seizure or improper contact. Replace defective bearings. Measure outside diameter of crankshaft main bearing journals to determine if out-of-round or tapered.
- Cut Plastigage to same length as width of main bearing. Place it in bearing cap, parallel with crankshaft (not over oil holes). Install crankshaft main bearings and caps in sequence.
- Tighten to specifications. Always install caps with arrow facing toward timing chain end. Remove main bearing cap from crankshaft and measure Plastigage at its widest part (using scale on Plastigage package).
- If clearance exceeds limits, replace bearing. Undersize bearings are available in .010", .020" and .030" undersizes. After inspection and/or replacement, tighten main bearing caps in three stages.

CRANKSHAFT MAIN BEARING JOURNALS SPECS
Thrust Bearing
- Check crankshaft end play with crankshaft bearing caps installed. Mount dial indicator to front of engine and locate probe on nose of crankshaft. Move crankshaft to rear of its travel. Zero dial indicator.
- Move crankshaft forward and read end play on gauge. Replace center main thrust bearing (upper and lower) if not to specification. Maximum crankshaft end play is .002-.007" (.05-.18 mm).
Rear Oil Seal
- Remove bolts holding crankshaft rear oil seal case to cylinder block. Remove case with seal, separator and gasket. Remove separator and oil seal from case.
- Install new seal and separator into case, making sure oil hole is located at bottom of separator. Examine crankshaft journal that runs in oil seal and chamfer over which seal must pass. Damage at either point can cause seal failure.
- Coat new gasket lightly with grease and install. Lubricate seal lip with engine oil and install seal over end of crankshaft. Rotate housing right and left during installation to ensure seal lip surface is flat. Install housing bolts and tighten.
TIMING CHAIN REMOVAL
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove alternator belt, alternator and distributor. Remove and set aside the air conditioner compressor (if equipped), DO NOT discharge system. Remove power steering belt, pump and bracket.
- Raise vehicle and remove right inner splash shield. Drain oil from crankcase and remove crankshaft drive pulley. Lower vehicle and place jack under engine. Remove right front engine mounting bolt and raise engine slightly.
- Remove engine oil dipstick, air cleaner assembly and spark plug wires. Remove cylinder head vacuum connections. Remove valve cover. Remove ONLY 2 front cylinder head bolts. DO NOT touch other cylinder head bolts.
- Remove oil pan, timing indicator and engine mounting plate. Remove bolts holding chain case cover and lift off cover. Remove bolts holding chain guides in position. Remove silent shaft and crankshaft sprocket bolts. Remove drive chain, outer crankshaft sprocket and silent shaft sprockets.
- Remove camshaft sprocket bolt, distributor drive gear, camshaft sprocket holder and right and left timing chain guides. Depress tensioner to remove timing chain. Remove inner crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket. (Scheme 7) When removing timing chain, note cam timing by marking chain in line with timing marks on camshaft and crankshaft sprockets.
Camshaft, Timing Chain, and Silent Shaft Assemblies. Scheme 7
- Remove cylinder head and manifolds as previously described. Remove camshaft sprocket with timing chain and place on sprocket holder. NOTE: DO NOT remove rocker shaft mounting bolts from camshaft bearing caps. Remove rocker arms, rocker shafts and bearing caps as an assembly. If wave washer is replaced for any reason, dished portion of washer must face front of engine.
- Loosen rocker shaft mounting bolts. Remove bolts, rocker arms, rocker shafts and camshaft bearing caps as an assembly. Remove camshaft.
Scheme 8
- Check camshaft journals for wear, scratches or seizure. Check lobes, rocker arms and bearing caps for damage or wear. Maximum camshaft lobe wear is.020" (.5 mm). Rocker arm spring free length is 2.54" (64.5 mm).
- If cylinder head bearing surfaces are excessively worn, scratched or binding, replace cylinder head assembly. Lubricate camshaft lobes and bearing journals. Install camshaft onto cylinder head.
- Install assembled rocker arm shaft assembly noting mating marks on bearing caps and rocker shafts are in proper position. Position camshaft so dowel pin on front end is positioned at top center (Scheme 8)(viewed from the front). (Scheme 8): Camshaft Installation Position
- Install camshaft bearing caps with arrows pointing towards timing chain end and in numerical order. Starting at center, tighten all bolts to 85 INCH lbs. (10 N.m) in sequence of center No. 3, No. 2, No. 4, front No. 1 and rear No. 5 caps. Repeat sequence, tightening to 15 ft. lbs. (20 N.m).
- Install cylinder head assembly as previously described. Install camshaft sprocket and distributor drive gear onto camshaft. Carefully set camshaft timing. Tighten camshaft sprocket locking bolt. Set valve clearance temporarily to cold engine setting.
- Fit gasket to valve cover. Temporarily install breather, semi-circular seal and valve cover. Start engine and run at idle speed until warm. Reset valves to specified hot settings.
- Install breather and semi-circular seal to cylinder head, applying sealant as indicated in (Scheme 2). Install and tighten valve cover. Complete installation by reversing removal procedure.

- Inspect all parts for cracks, wear or other damage. Check chain tensioner spring free length. Standard free length is 2.587" (65.7 mm). Spring load is 4.4 lbs. @ 1.453" (2.0 kg @ 36.9 mm).
- With camshaft bearing caps tightened to specification, rotate camshaft so that dowel hole is on upper vertical centerline. (Scheme 8) Install sprocket holder and right and left chain guides.
- Rotate crankshaft until No. 1 piston is at TDC on compression stroke. Install tensioner spring and shoe on oil pump body. Install timing chain on camshaft and crankshaft sprockets.
- Be sure timing marks are aligned. Timing marks on sprockets are punch marks near gear teeth. Timing marks on chain are the middle of each PLATED link. - Align camshaft sprocket dowel hole with camshaft dowel hole. Install dowel pin and distributor drive gear. Install sprocket bolt on camshaft and tighten. Install silent shaft chain drive sprocket on crankshaft.
- Install silent shaft chain to oil pump sprocket and to silent shaft sprocket. Be sure timing marks (punch marks on teeth) are aligned with plated links of chain. (Scheme 10)
- Holding parts with both hands, align crankshaft sprocket timing mark with plated chain link. Install oil pump and silent chain sprockets to their respective shafts. (Scheme 10): Silent Shaft Drive Chain Installation
- Install oil pump and silent shaft sprocket bolts. Loosely install three chain guides. Adjust silent shaft tension by tightening chain guide "A" and "C". Then shake oil pump and silent shaft sprockets to collect chain slack at point "P" of (Scheme 10).
- Adjust position of chain guide "B" so that when chain is pressed inward with finger tips, clearance between chain guide "B" and chain links will be.04-.14" (1.0-3.5 mm). Tighten chain guide "B" mounting bolts.
- Install new chain case cover gaskets to cover. Trim as required to fit at top and bottom. Coat cover and gaskets with sealant. Install gasket and cover to cylinder block. Reinstall front 2 cylinder head bolts.
- To adjust tension with engine installed, proceed as follows: Remove cover from access hole in chain case cover. Loosen special bolt "B". (Scheme 11)
- Apply finger pressure only (no screwdrivers or punches) on boss in direction indicated. Tighten special bolt "B" to 15 ft. lbs. (20 N.m). Complete reassembly by reversing disassembly procedure.
Silent Shaft Chain Adjustment with Engine Installed. Scheme 11
Right Silent Shaft
- With chains removed, remove oil pump mounting bolts. (Scheme 12) Remove bolt holding oil pump driven gear and silent shaft together. Remove oil pump and withdraw right silent shaft from bore. NOTE: If bolt holding oil pump driven gear is difficult to remove, remove oil pump and silent shaft as an assembly and then remove lock bolt.
- Reverse removal procedure to install. Prime oil pump and make sure oil pump mating marks align and that Woodruff key on shaft fits keyway in driven gear.

Left Silent Shaft
- Remove thrust plate supporting left silent shaft. Thrust plate is removed by threading bolts into plate holes at same time. Withdraw left silent shaft from cylinder block.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Install silent shafts into cylinder block taking care not to damage inner bearings. Install thrust plate on left silent shaft using new "O" ring. Install oil pump.
- If silent shaft inner bearings are worn, use Camshaft Bearing Remover (MD998251) to draw bearing from cylinder block. For installation, use Camshaft Bearing Installing Installer (MD998250) to press bearing straight into block.
- Silent shaft clearances are as follows: Outer diameter to outer bearing clearance is .0008-.0024" (.02-.06 mm). Inner diameter to inner bearing clearance is .0020-.0035" (.05-.09 mm).
CRANKCASE CAPACITY
Four and one half quarts (4.3L) without oil filter. Five quarts (4.7L) including filter.
NORMAL OIL PRESSURE
50-64 psi (3.5-4.5 kg/cm 2 ) @ 2000 RPM. Minimum @ idle is 4 psi (.28 kg/cm 2 )
PRESSURE REGULATOR VALVE
Valve located in oil pump body. Not adjustable.
The 2.6L engine uses a gear-type oil pump with a force-feed lubrication system. Driven gear of oil pump also drives right silent shaft. (Scheme 13) For the removal of the oil pump, refer to SILENT SHAFTS. Dissassembly is done as oil pump is removed from block.
Inspection
Check drive gear-to-housing clearance. Check drive and driven gear end play. Check drive and driven gear-to-bearing clearance in body and at cover. Remove end cap and check oil pump relief valve spring free length is 1.85" (47 mm). Check spring load is 9.5 lbs. @ 1.575" (4.3 kg @ 40 mm).
Ensure new gasket is used. Refill oil pump assembly with oil before installation. Pump reassembly is done as pump is installed on block. For installation of oil pump, see SILENT SHAFTS .

OIL PUMP SPECIFICATIONS
- Drain cooling system. Remove radiator hose, by-pass hose and heater hose from water pump. Remove drive pulley cover bolts and drive pulley cover. Remove locking bolt and pivot bolts. Pull up on slotted side (front of car) of water pump to relieve belt tension. Remove drive belt.
- Loosen and remove water pump mount bolts. Remove water pump assembly from engine. Remove 4 bolts holding pump to body. Discard gasket and clean all gasket surfaces. Remove and discard "O" ring and clean "O" ring groove.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Install new gasket on water pump body and install on engine. Place new "O" ring in "O" ring groove. Position pump on engine, tighten mount bolts and install belt to proper tension.
- When refilling cooling system, check anti-freeze freezing point and fill cooling system with required amount of anti-freeze (Mopar-4106794 or Prestone II).
- If, after repair, radiator coolant level must be checked, install pressure cap and start engine. Run until upper radiator hose feels hot. Stop engine and add more coolant, as necessary, to completely fill system.
