DESCRIPTION
These heater systems are the blend air type. Outside air enters the heater through the cowl grille and passes through a plenum chamber to the heater core. A temperature control door in the plenum chamber directs the incoming air either through or past the heater core. Blending is controlled by the temperature control lever. Distribution of the blended air is controlled by the heater-defroster lever and the blower speed switch.
Front Wheel Drive Models
Lever and cable controls are used to operate heater. One cable operates the heater mode door. The other cable operates the blend air door.
CONTROL CABLES
Mode control cable (Front Wheel Drive models only) and temperature control cable (all models) are attached to the heater control by color coded, "T" shaped snap-in flags. A Red flag is used for temperature cable and a Yellow flag (larger than Red flag) for mode control. Control cables attach to the heater assembly by means of a ribbed snap-in flag.
Rib provides installation orientation and retention. Flag may be removed only after tab has been depressed into receiver. Top panel cover, center air duct and heater control panel must be removed to adjust temperature control cable.
Control Cable Mounting. Scheme 1
Scheme 2
Scheme 3
- Twist self-adjusting clip in position 2" from heater end of cable core wire. Route cable through middle holes of brake support bracket and then forward of and around main wiring harness. (Scheme 2): Heater Assembly and Control Cable Routing (Horizon & Omni) (Scheme 3): Heater Assembly (Aries, Caravelle, Daytona, Laser, Lancer, Le Baron, New Yorker, Reliant and 600)
- Align the door crank pin with clip and at the same time seat the cable flag in retainer and place clip over the crank pin. Place temperature control lever in "COOL" position.
- Attach cable core wire to control lever pin. Snap the cable housing into retaining clip. Install control panel if removed. Adjust cable by moving control lever to "WARM" position. Make sure lever contacts right edge of bezel slot.
Mode Door Cable (Front Wheel Drive Models)
- Twist self-adjusting clip in position 2" from small loop at heater end of core wire. Route cable through middle holes of brake support bracket and then forward of and around main wiring harness.
- Align the door crank pin with clip. At the same time seat cable flag in retainer and place clip over crank pin. Place mode control lever in "OFF" position.
- Attach cable core wire to control lever pin. Snap the cable housing into retaining clip. Install control panel if removed. Adjust cable by moving control lever to "DEFROST" position. Make sure it contacts right edge of bezel slot.
TROUBLE SHOOTING & DIAGNOSIS

HEATER CORE
Note. The following procedures are for vehicles with heater systems only. For removal on vehicles with A/C-heater systems, see appropriate article in MANUAL or AUTOMATIC A/C SYSTEMS section.
Removal & Installation (Aries, Caravelle, Daytona, Lancer, Laser, LeBaron, New Yorker, Reliant & 600)
- Disconnect battery negative cable and drain radiator. Disconnect blower motor wiring connector. From under heater assembly, depress tab on mode door and temperature control cables, pull flags from receivers and remove self-adjusting clip from door crank arms.
- Remove glove box assembly. Disconnect heater hoses on engine side of firewall. Plug hoses and heater core pipes. Remove hanger strap to heater assembly screw by reaching through glove box opening. Remove 2 heater assembly attaching nuts from engine compartment. NOTE: Blower motor resistor block is located under the upper right side of dash panel.
- On Daytona and Laser models, remove 2 screws attaching demister adapter to the top of heater assembly. On all models, pull instrument panel outward just enough to allow heater assembly to slide out. Remove heater assembly. To install heater assembly, reverse removal procedure.
Removal & Installation (Horizon, Omni & Rampage)
- Disconnect battery negative cable and drain radiator. Disconnect blower motor wiring connector. Remove ash tray and holder assembly. Depress tab on temperature control cable flag and pull temperature control cable out of receiver on heater assembly.
- Remove glove box and door assembly. Disconnect heater hoses and plug hoses and heater core pipes. From engine compartment, remove 2 nuts attaching heater assembly to firewall. Remove wire connector from blower motor and resistor block. Disconnect heater assembly brace. NOTE: Blower motor resistor block is located on right side of heater housing.
- Remove heater support bracket nut. Disconnect strap from plenum stud. From under dash, lower heater assembly just enough to reach mode control cable. Depress tab on flag and pull mode door control cable out of receiver on heater assembly.
- Move heater assembly toward right side of vehicle and then lower out from under instrument panel. To install heater assembly, reverse removal procedure.
Note. 1/2 in (13 mm.) heater hose is used on front wheel drive cars
Removal & Installation (Front Wheel Drive Models)
- Disconnect battery negative cable. Disconnect blower motor wiring connector. On Horizon, Omni, Rampage models, remove left heater outlet duct screws and remove duct.
- On all models, remove 5 screws retaining blower motor to assembly and remove blower motor with fan. To remove fan wheel from motor, remove retaining clamp from motor shaft and remove fan wheel.
- On Aries, LeBaron, New Yorker, Reliant, 400 and 600 models, remove 2 nuts retaining plate to blower motor and remove plate. To assemble and install blower motors, reverse removal procedure.
Reach under left side of instrument panel and press headlight knob release button while pulling knob out. Remove 4 screws and left bezel. Remove control panel mounting screws. Pull control panel out. Disconnect cables and wiring. To install, reverse removal procedure and adjust cables.
Removal & Installation (Aries, Caravelle, Daytona, Lancer, Laser, LeBaron, New Yorker, Reliant, 600)
Remove 2 screws attaching heater control bezel to heater control. Remove bezel by rolling out and lifting up to free bezel locating tabs. Remove 2 heater control screws and slide control panel out enough to disconnect control cables and electrical connector. Remove heater control. To install heater controls, reverse removal procedure.
