THERMOSTAT

Thermostat is a wax pellet type with an opening temperature of 190°F (88°C) for 2.6L engines and 195°F (91°C) for all other engines. Replace thermostat if operating temperature is inaccurate.

PRESSURE CAP

All models use a 16 psi (1.1 kg/cm 2 ) pressure cap which should be tested at 14-17 psi (1.0-1.2 kg/cm 2 ). Center of cap is equipped with a vent valve. Vent valve allows a small flow through the cap when temperature is below boiling point. Valve closes when boiling point is reached. Valve also opens when coolant is cooling and contracting, permitting liquid to return to radiator from coolant reserve tank.

WATER PUMP

Pump is serviced only as an assembly. When replacing water pump, be sure correct pump is used. Pump impeller must be compatible with pulley system drive ratio. It is possible to replace pump without discharging air conditioning system. When replacing a water pump because of a bearing or shaft failure, carefully inspect the fan for cracks, loose blades or rivets caused by excessive vibration. If necessary, replace fan.

MAINTENANCE

Inspect cooling system every 12 months or 15,000 miles. Drain and flush cooling system at 36 months or 52,500 miles, and every 24 months or 30,000 miles thereafter. Maintain a coolant level of 50% ethylene glycol anti-freeze and 50% water year-round.

Note. On FWD models, ethylene glycol base anti-freeze must contain a silicate inhibitor to retard corrosion due to the engine's aluminum components. Failure to use an anti-freeze with silicate inhibitor could cause radiator plugging and engine overheating.
