POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE
Note. If replacing Powertrain Control Module (PCM), the correct vehicle mileage and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) must be programmed into the PCM to prevent Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) from being set in Controller Anti-Lock Brake (CAB) module, Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) and Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) module. To program PCM and clear DTCs from ABS, SKIM and SRS modules, proceed to appropriate procedure.
Note. If replacing both PCM and SKIM at the same time, first program PCM, then program SKIM. Replace all ignition keys and program them to new SKIM.
Programming PCM
- Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below driver's side of instrument panel, near steering column.
- Using scan tool, select THEFT ALARM, SKIM then MISC. Select PCM REPLACED. Obtain 4-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) from vehicle owner or manufacturer. NOTE: If 3 attempts are made incorrectly to enter PIN, secured access mode will be locked out for one hour. To exit lock out mode, leave ignition switch in ON position for one hour. Ensure battery voltage is maintained with battery charger, if necessary.
- Enter secured access mode by entering PIN code for vehicle. Select ENTER to update PCM VIN. SKIM will now send secret key data to PCM.
- Select BACK to go to SELECT SYSTEM menu. Select ENGINE, MISC then SRI MEMORY CHECK. Scan tool will display IS ODOMETER READING BETWEEN XX AND XX?
- Select YES or NO. If NO is selected, scan tool will display ENTER ODOMETER READING. Enter odometer reading from instrument panel and press ENTER.
Programming SKIM
- Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below driver's side of instrument panel, near steering column. Using scan tool, select THEFT ALARM, SKIM then MISC. Select PCM REPLACED. Obtain 4-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) from vehicle owner or manufacturer. CAUTION: Enter correct country code in SKIM. If incorrect country code is entered, SKIM must be replaced. NOTE: If 3 attempts are made incorrectly to enter PIN, secured access mode will be locked out for one hour. To exit lock out mode, leave ignition switch in ON position for one hour. Ensure battery voltage is maintained with battery charger, if necessary.
- Enter secured access mode by entering PIN code for vehicle. Select COUNTRY CODE. Enter correct country. Select YES to update VIN. SKIM will learn VIN from Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Press ENTER to transfer secret key data from PCM to SKIM. Program ignition keys to SKIM.
Programming Ignition Keys To SKIM
- Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below driver's side of instrument panel, near steering column. Using scan tool, select THEFT ALARM, SKIM then MISC. Select PROGRAM IGNITION KEYS. Obtain 4-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) from vehicle owner or manufacturer. NOTE: If 3 attempts are made incorrectly to enter PIN, secured access mode will be locked out for one hour. To exit lock out mode, leave ignition switch in ON position for one hour. Ensure battery voltage is maintained with battery charger, if necessary. NOTE: A maximum of 8 keys can be learned to each SKIM. Once a key is learned to SKIM, key cannot be transferred to another vehicle.
- Enter secured access mode by entering PIN code for vehicle. Obtain ignition keys to be programmed from customer. Select MISC, then ERASE ALL CURRENT IGN KEYS. Program all ignition keys by following instructions on scan tool.
Compression
Check engine mechanical condition with a compression gauge, vacuum gauge, or an engine analyzer. See appropriate COMPRESSION SPECIFICATIONS table. See engine analyzer manual for specific instructions. Ensure battery is fully charged, engine is at normal operating temperature and throttle valve is fully open when checking compression.
Remove Auto Shutdown (ASD) relay to prevent engine from starting when checking compression. ASD relay is located in Power Distribution Center (PDC). For relay location, check label on underside of PDC cover. Once compression test is complete, reinstall ASD relay and use scan tool to clear DTC from PCM. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article for clearing of DTC.

V6 COMPRESSION SPECIFICATIONS
FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE
| WARNING | Fuel system is under high pressure. Release fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel lines or fuel system components. |
- Turn ignition off. Remove fuel pump relay from Power Distribution Center (PDC). PDC is located in engine compartment. Start engine and let it idle until engine stalls. Attempt restarting engine until engine will no longer run. Turn ignition off. Remove fuel tank filler cap from fuel tank to release any pressure from fuel tank.
- Fuel system components may now be serviced. Use care when servicing fuel system components, as some fuel pressure may still exist in the fuel system. Install fuel tank filler cap and fuel pump relay once fuel system components are serviced.
- Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) may have been stored in PCM due to the removal of fuel pump relay. Clear DTCs from PCM. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
Concorde, Intrepid, LHS & 300M

Note. For circuit identification and wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article. After each repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all components. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-1 under VERIFICATION TESTS to ensure system is functioning properly.
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate ASD fuel system test. Listen for fuel pump operation at fuel tank. It may be necessary to use a stethoscope. If fuel pump operation can be heard, fuel pump is operating. Stop fuel system activation and go to next step. If fuel pump operation cannot be heard, stop fuel system activation and go to step 7.
- Release fuel pressure. See «FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-97369-S00845111802001050300000). Connect a fuel pressure gauge to test port on fuel rail. On 2.7L engines, use Fuel Line Adapter (6539). On all engines, actuate ASD fuel system test with scan tool. Observe fuel pressure gauge. Fuel pressure should be 53-63 psi (365-434 kPa). Stop ASD fuel system test. If fuel pressure is less than specification, go to next step. If fuel pressure is within specification, go to step 5. If fuel pressure is more than specification, replace fuel filter/pressure regulator.
- Release fuel pressure. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect fuel pressure line from fuel filter/pressure regulator at fuel tank. Connect Fuel Line Adapter (6539) between disconnected fuel line and fuel pump module. Connect fuel pressure gauge to fuel line adapter hose. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate ASD fuel system test and note fuel pressure. Fuel pressure should be 53-63 psi (365-434 kPa). Stop ASD fuel system test. If fuel pressure is as specified, repair or replace fuel supply line as necessary. If fuel pressure is not as specified, go to next step.
- Release fuel pressure. Remove fuel pump module and inspect fuel inlet strainer. If fuel inlet strainer is plugged, replace fuel pump inlet strainer. If fuel inlet strainer in not plugged, replace fuel pump module.
- Turn ignition off. Release fuel pressure. Disconnect fuel supply line from fuel rail. Install Fuel Line Adapter (6539 for 5/16" fuel lines or 6631 for 3/8" fuel lines) between disconnected fuel line and fuel rail. Insert other end of hose into a graduated container suitable for gasoline. CAUTION: DO NOT operate fuel pump longer than 7 seconds.
- Using scan tool, actuate ASD fuel system test for 7 seconds. If fuel volume is.5 pt. (.25L) or more, no problem is indicated at this time. Test is complete. If fuel volume is less than.5 pt. (.25L), check for a kinked fuel line between fuel pump module and fuel rail. Repair fuel lines as necessary and retest. If fuel line is okay, replace fuel pump module.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect fuel pump module harness connector. Inspect connector for damage or corrosion. Clean or repair connector as necessary. If connector is okay, turn ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate ASD fuel system test. Connect a test light between ground and fuel pump relay output circuit (Dark Green/White wire) at fuel pump module harness connector. If test light illuminates brightly, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate brightly, go to step 10.
- Turn ignition off. Connect a test light between battery positive and ground circuit (Black wire) at fuel pump module harness connector. If test light illuminates brightly, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate brightly, repair open in ground circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- At this time, fuel pump module is assumed to be defective. Replace fuel pump module.
- Turn ignition off. Remove fuel pump relay from PDC. Connect a test light between ground and fused battery voltage circuit (Red wire) at terminal "B" at fuel pump relay harness connector in PDC. (Scheme 39) If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, repair open in fused battery voltage circuit.
- Measure resistance of fuel pump relay output circuit (Dark Green/White wire) between fuel pump module harness connector and terminal "D" at fuel pump relay harness connector in PDC. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace fuel pump relay. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Dark Green/White wire.

- Measure resistance of fuel pump relay output circuit (Dark Green/White wire) between fuel pump module harness connector and terminal No. 61 at fuel pump relay harness connector in PDC. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace fuel pump relay. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Dark Green/White wire.

Connect Fuel Line Adapter (6539 for 5/16" fuel lines or 6631 for 3/8" fuel lines) to disconnected fuel supply line. Insert other end of adapter into a graduated container. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate ASD fuel system test for 7 seconds. Fuel pump should deliver at least .5 pt. (.25L) in 7 seconds. If fuel pump capacity is not as specified, check for kinked or damaged fuel supply line between fuel tank and fuel rail. If fuel line is okay, replace fuel pump module.
Sebring Convertible, Sebring Sedan & Stratus Sedan

- Measure resistance of fuel pump relay output circuit (Dark Green/White wire) between fuel pump module harness connector and terminal No. 15 at fuel pump relay harness connector in PDC. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace fuel pump relay. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Dark Green/White wire.

After each repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all components. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-1 under VERIFICATION TESTS to ensure system is functioning properly.
- The following checks must be performed before continuing with this test. Ensure battery is fully charged and in good condition. Ensure Powertrain Control Module (PCM) power and ground circuits are okay. See COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - CARS - EXCEPT SEBRING COUPE & STRATUS COUPE article. Ensure PCM communicates with scan tool and no Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) are present. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - CONCORDE, INTREPID, LHS & 300M article. Ensure PCI bus is functional. Using scan tool, attempt to communicate with instrument cluster and Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM). If scan tool does not communicate with instrument cluster or SKIM, diagnose communication failure. See COMMUNICATIONS in BODY CONTROL MODULES - CONCORDE, INTREPID, LHS & 300M article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Using scan tool, select CLEAR PCM (BATT DISCONNECT). Crank engine over several times. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. If any DTCs are present, perform appropriate diagnostic test. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - CONCORDE, INTREPID, LHS & 300M article. If no DTCs exist, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Check Power Distribution Center (PDC) and junction block for blown fuses. PDC is located on left side of engine compartment. Junction block is located on left end of instrument panel. Replace blown fuses and check related circuits for short to ground. If fuses are okay, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, actuate Auto Shutdown (ASD) fuel system test. Using a mechanic's stethoscope, listen for fuel pump operation at fuel tank. If fuel pump operation cannot be heard, stop ASD fuel system actuation and go to step 10. If fuel pump operation can be heard, stop ASD fuel system actuation and go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Release fuel pressure. See «FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-97369-S00845111802001050300000) under FUEL SYSTEM. Connect a fuel pressure gauge to test port on fuel rail. On 2.7L engines, use Fuel Adapter (6539). On all engines, turn ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate ASD fuel system test. Allow fuel pressure gauge to stabilize. Stop ASD fuel system activation. Fuel pressure should be 53-63 psi (365-434 kPa). If fuel pressure is less than specified, go to next step. If fuel pressure is more than specified, replace fuel filter/pressure regulator. If fuel pressure is as specified, go to step 7.
- Release fuel pressure. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect fuel pressure line from fuel filter/pressure regulator at fuel tank. Using scan tool, actuate ASD fuel system test and note fuel pressure. Fuel pressure should be 53-63 psi (365-434 kPa). If fuel pressure is as specified, stop ASD fuel system activation. Release fuel pressure, and repair or replace fuel supply line. If fuel pressure is not as specified, stop ASD fuel system activation and go to next step.
- Release fuel pressure. Remove fuel pump module and inspect fuel inlet strainer. If fuel inlet strainer is plugged, replace fuel pump inlet strainer. If fuel inlet strainer is not plugged, replace fuel pump module.
- Turn ignition off. Release fuel pressure. Disconnect fuel supply line from fuel rail. Install Fuel Line Pressure Test Adapter Hose (6539 for 5/16" fuel lines or 6631 for 3/8" fuel lines) between disconnected fuel line and fuel rail. Remove fuel fill cap. Insert other end of hose into a graduated container suitable for gasoline.
- Using scan tool, actuate ASD fuel system test for 7 seconds. If fuel volume is.5 pt. (.25L) or more, fuel volume is okay. Stop fuel system activation. Remove all test equipment and reconnect fuel supply line to fuel rail. Go to next step. Test is complete. If fuel volume is less than.5 pt. (.25L), check for a kinked fuel line between fuel pump module and fuel rail. Repair fuel lines as necessary and retest. If fuel line is okay, replace fuel pump module.
- Check the following additional items as possible causes for no-start condition: Check spark plug condition. Check for any related technical service bulletins. Fuel must be free of contamination. Engine exhaust system must be free of restrictions. Engine compression must be within specification. Engine valve timing must be within specification. Engine must be free of vacuum leaks. Repair any problems as necessary. If no problems exist, test is complete.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect fuel pump module harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate ASD fuel system test. Connect a test light between ground and fuel pump relay output circuit (Dark Green/White wire) at fuel pump module harness connector. If test light illuminates brightly, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate brightly, go to step 13.
- Turn ignition off. Connect a test light between battery positive and fuel pump ground circuit (Black wire) at fuel pump module harness connector. If test light illuminates brightly, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate brightly, repair open in Black wire between ground and fuel pump module. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- If no other possible causes are remaining, replace fuel pump module.

- Measure resistance of fuel pump relay output circuit (Dark Green/White wire) between fuel pump module harness connector and fuel pump relay harness connector terminal "D" in PDC. (Scheme 39) If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace fuel pump relay. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Dark Green/White wire.

Using scan tool select CLEAR PCM (BATT DISCONNECT). Crank engine over several times. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. If any DTCs are present, perform appropriate diagnostic test. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - NEON article. If no DTCs exist, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Check Power Distribution Center (PDC) and fuse block for blown fuses. PDC is located in left front of engine compartment. Fuse block is located on left side of instrument panel. Replace blown fuses and check related circuits for short to ground. If fuses are okay, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, actuate Auto Shutdown (ASD) fuel system test. Using a mechanic's stethoscope, listen for fuel pump operation at fuel tank. If fuel pump operation cannot be heard, stop ASD fuel system actuation and go to step 10. If fuel pump operation can be heard, stop ASD fuel system actuation and go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Release fuel pressure. See «FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-97369-S00845111802001050300000) under FUEL SYSTEM. Connect a fuel pressure gauge to test port on fuel rail. PCM LOCATIONS
Note. For circuit identification and wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article. After each repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all components. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER-1 under VERIFICATION TESTS to ensure system is functioning properly.
- Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes. Turn engine over by hand to ensure engine is not seized. If engine is not seized, go to next step. If engine is seized, repair mechanical condition preventing engine from cranking.
- Ensure ignition is off. Reconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect PCM harness connectors. For PCM location, see «PCM LOCATIONS»(ref-97369-S33439040982001050900000) table. Measure resistance between ground and TRS T41 sense circuit (Brown/Yellow wire) at terminal No. 76 at PCM C2 harness connector. (Scheme 43) Shift transmission through all gears, from Park to 1st and back. Resistance should be less than 10 ohms when transmission is in Park or Neutral, then switch to more than 10 ohms when transmission is not in Park or Neutral. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace transmission range sensor.
- Reconnect PCM harness connectors. Check battery cables for high resistance. See appropriate STARTERS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. If voltage drop is.2 volt or less on both battery cables, go to next step. If voltage drop on either battery cable is more than.2 volt, repair high resistance in battery circuit. WARNING: Engine may crank during the following step. Ensure transmission is in Park and parking brake is applied. Keep away from moving engine parts.
- Ensure ignition is off. Remove starter relay from Power Distribution Center (PDC). PDC is located on left side of engine compartment. Briefly connect a jumper wire between fused battery voltage circuit (Red wire) at terminal "B" at starter relay harness connector and starter relay output circuit (Brown wire) at terminal "D" at starter relay harness connector. (Scheme 39) If engine cranks, go to next step. If engine does not crank, go to step 8.
- Connect a test light between ground and ignition switch output circuit (Yellow wire) at terminal "A" at starter relay harness connector. While observing test light, turn ignition switch to START position. If test light illuminates brightly, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate brightly, repair open or high resistance in ignition switch output circuit.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM harness connectors. Measure resistance of starter relay control circuit (Tan wire) between terminal "C" at starter relay harness connector and terminal No. 31 at PCM C1 harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Tan wire.
- Reconnect PCM harness connectors. Install a substitute relay in place of starter relay. Attempt to start engine. If engine cranks, replace starter relay. If engine does not crank, replace PCM.
- Disconnect starter solenoid harness connector. Measure resistance of starter relay output circuit between starter solenoid harness connector (Light Green wire) and terminal "D" (Brown wire) at starter relay harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in starter relay output circuit.
- Connect a test light between ground and fused battery voltage circuit (Red wire) at terminal "B" at starter relay harness connector. If test light illuminates brightly, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate brightly, repair open or high resistance in fused battery voltage circuit.
- If no other possible causes are remaining, replace starter.

- Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes. Turn engine over by hand to ensure engine is not seized. If engine is not seized, go to next step. If engine is seized, repair mechanical condition preventing engine from cranking.
- Ensure ignition is off. Reconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect PCM harness connectors. For PCM location, see «PCM LOCATIONS»(ref-97369-S33439040982001050900000) table. On M/T models, go to next step. On A/T models, measure resistance between ground and Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch sense circuit (Brown/Yellow wire) at terminal No. 76 at PCM C2 harness connector. (Scheme 44) Shift transmission through all gears, from Park to 1st and back. Resistance should be less than 10 ohms when transmission is in Park or Neutral, then switch to more than 10 ohms when transmission is not in Park or Neutral. If resistance is as specified, go to step 4. If resistance is not as specified, replace PNP switch.
- Measure resistance between ground and clutch interlock switch sense circuit (Yellow/Red wire) at terminal No. 76 at PCM C2 harness connector. (Scheme 44) Resistance should be less than 10 ohms with clutch pedal fully depressed, then switch to more than 10 ohms with clutch pedal released. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace clutch interlock/upstop switch.
- Reconnect PCM harness connectors. Check battery cables for high resistance. See appropriate STARTERS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. If voltage drop is.2 volt or less on both battery cables, go to next step. If voltage drop on either battery cable is more than.2 volt, repair high resistance in battery circuit. WARNING: Engine may crank during the following step. Ensure transmission is in Park (A/T) or Neutral (M/T) and parking brake is applied. Keep away from moving engine parts.
- Ensure ignition is off. Remove starter relay from Power Distribution Center (PDC). PDC is located in left front corner of engine compartment. Briefly connect a jumper wire between fused battery voltage circuit (Red wire) at terminal No. 25 at starter relay harness connector and starter relay output circuit (Brown wire) at terminal No. 26 at starter relay harness connector. (Scheme 40) If engine cranks, go to next step. If engine does not crank, go to step 9.
- Connect a test light between ground and ignition switch output circuit (Yellow wire) at terminal No. 28 at starter relay harness connector. While observing test light, turn ignition switch to START position. If test light illuminates brightly, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate brightly, repair open or high resistance in ignition switch output circuit.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM harness connectors. Measure resistance of starter relay control circuit (Tan wire) between terminal No. 28 at starter relay harness connector and terminal No. 31 at PCM C1 harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Tan wire.
- Reconnect PCM harness connectors. Install a substitute relay in place of starter relay. Attempt to start engine. If engine cranks, replace starter relay. If engine does not crank, replace PCM.
- Disconnect starter solenoid harness connector. Measure resistance of starter relay output circuit (Brown wire) between starter solenoid harness connector and terminal No. 26 at starter relay harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Brown wire.
- Connect a test light between ground and fused battery voltage circuit (Red wire) at terminal No. 25 at starter relay harness connector. If test light illuminates brightly, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate brightly, repair open or high resistance in fused battery voltage circuit.
- If no other possible causes are remaining, replace starter.

If CLUTCH SWITCH state does not change from OPEN when clutch pedal is released to CLOSED when clutch pedal is completely depressed, go to step 12.
- Ensure ignition is off. Shift transmission into Park or Neutral. Disconnect PCM harness connectors. For PCM location, see «PCM LOCATIONS»(ref-97369-S33439040982001050900000) table. Measure resistance between ground and park/neutral position switch sense circuit (Black/White wire) at terminal No. 76 at PCM C2 harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black/White wire between PCM and splice S130. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.

- Reconnect PCM harness connectors. Install a substitute relay in place of starter relay. Attempt to start engine. If engine cranks, replace starter relay. If engine does not crank, replace PCM.
- Disconnect starter solenoid harness connector. Measure resistance of starter relay output circuit (Brown wire) between starter solenoid harness connector and terminal B1 at starter relay harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Brown wire.

- Connect a test light between battery positive and ground circuit (Black/Tan wire) at CPP switch harness connector. If test light illuminates brightly, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate brightly, repair open or high resistance between CPP switch and ground located on left strut tower.
- Reconnect PCM harness connectors. Connect a jumper wire between signal circuit (Light Green/Black wire) and ground circuit (Black/Tan wire) at CPP switch harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, monitor CLUTCH SWITCH state in INPUTS/OUTPUTS. If CLUTCH SWITCH state is CLOSED, replace CPP switch. If CLUTCH SWITCH state is not CLOSED, go to next step.
- If no other possible causes are remaining, replace PCM.

If voltage drop is.2 volt or less on both battery cables, go to next step. If voltage drop on either battery cable is more than.2 volt, repair high resistance in battery circuit. If test light does not illuminate brightly, repair open or high resistance in ignition switch output circuit.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM harness connectors. Measure resistance of starter relay control circuit (Tan wire) between terminal No. 7 at starter relay harness connector and terminal No. 31 at PCM C1 harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Tan wire.
- Reconnect PCM harness connectors. Install a substitute relay in place of starter relay. Attempt to start engine. If engine cranks, replace starter relay. If engine does not crank, replace PCM.
- Disconnect starter solenoid harness connector. Measure resistance of starter relay output circuit (Brown wire) between starter solenoid harness connector and terminal No. 10 at starter relay harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Brown wire.

If test light illuminates brightly, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate brightly, repair open in fused battery voltage circuit.
- Turn ignition on. Connect a test light between ground and fused ignition switch output circuit (Dark Blue/White wire) at PCM C1 harness connector terminal No. 20. If test light illuminates brightly, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate brightly, repair open in fused ignition switch output circuit.
- Turn ignition off. Using a test light connected to battery positive, individually probe the following ground circuits: Black/Tan wire at PCM C1 harness connector terminal No. 10. Black/Tan wire at PCM C2 harness connector terminal No. 50. Black/White wire at PCM C2 harness connector terminal No. 47. If test light illuminates at each ground circuit, test is complete. If test light does not illuminate at each ground circuit, repair open in appropriate ground circuit.

- Using scan tool, read and record Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) DTC (fault) messages. If no SKIM DTC messages are present, go to next step. If any SKIM DTC messages are present, a fault exists in anti-theft system. Perform appropriate test. See appropriate ANTI-THEFT SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. NOTE: If scan tool does not communicate with SKIM, repair communication problem. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. WARNING: Fuel system is under constant pressure even when ignition is off. Fuel pressure must be released before opening fuel system.
- Turn ignition off. Release fuel pressure. See «FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-97369-S00845111802001050300000) under FUEL SYSTEM. Connect a fuel pressure gauge to test port on fuel rail. On 2.7L engines, use Fuel Adapter (6539). On all engines, turn ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate ASD fuel system test. Allow fuel pressure gauge to stabilize. Stop ASD fuel system activation. Fuel pressure should be 53-63 psi (365-434 kPa). If fuel pressure is less than specified, go to next step. If fuel pressure is more than specified, replace fuel filter/pressure regulator. If fuel pressure is as specified, go to step 6 .
- Release fuel pressure. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect fuel pressure line from fuel filter/pressure regulator at fuel tank. Connect Fuel Line Pressure Test Adapter Hose (6539) between disconnected fuel line and fuel filter/pressure regulator. Connect fuel pressure gauge to fuel line adapter hose. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate ASD fuel system test and note fuel pressure. Fuel pressure should be 53-63 psi (365-434 kPa). If fuel pressure is as specified, stop ASD fuel system activation. Release fuel pressure, and repair or replace fuel supply line. If fuel pressure is not as specified, stop ASD fuel system activation and go to next step.
- Release fuel pressure. Remove fuel pump module and inspect fuel inlet strainer. If fuel inlet strainer is plugged, replace fuel pump inlet strainer. If fuel inlet strainer is not plugged, replace fuel pump module.
- Turn ignition off. Release fuel pressure. Disconnect fuel supply line from fuel rail. Install Fuel Line Pressure Test Adapter Hose (6539 for 5/16" fuel lines or 6631 for 3/8" fuel lines) between disconnected fuel line and fuel rail. Remove fuel fill cap. Insert other end of hose into a graduated container suitable for gasoline.
- Using scan tool, actuate ASD fuel system test for 7 seconds. If fuel volume is .5 pt. (.25L) or more, fuel volume is okay. Stop fuel system activation. Remove all test equipment and reconnect fuel supply line to fuel rail. Go to next step. If fuel volume is less than .5 pt. (.25L), check for a kinked fuel line between fuel pump module and fuel rail. Repair fuel lines as necessary and retest. If fuel line is okay, replace fuel pump module.
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, monitor TP sensor voltage while slowly opening throttle from idle position to wide open throttle position. If voltage changes smoothly, go to next step. If voltage does not change smoothly, replace TP sensor.
- Ensure throttle is fully closed and against throttle stop. Using scan tool, read TP sensor voltage. If voltage is 0.92 volt or less, go to next step. If voltage is more than 0.92 volt, check for binding throttle linkage. Repair linkage as necessary. If linkage is not binding, replace TP sensor. NOTE: The following procedure assumes that the cooling system thermostat is functioning properly. Test works best if performed on a totally cold engine (cold soak).
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, read Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor value. If engine coolant temperature is more than 180°F (82°C), allow engine coolant temperature to cool down to 150°F (66°C) before proceeding. If engine coolant temperature is 150°F (66°C) or less, start engine and monitor scan tool until engine coolant temperature reaches 180°F (82°C). If ECT sensor value increases smoothly, go to next step. If ECT sensor value increase is erratic, check for cooling system problems and repair as necessary. If cooling system is okay, replace ECT sensor.
- Check the following additional items as possible causes for start and stall condition: Check for any technical service bulletins that may apply. Fuel must be free of contamination. Engine exhaust system must be free of restrictions. Engine compression must be within specification. Engine valve timing must be within specification. Throttle body must be free of carbon build-up and dirt. If a problem is found, repair as necessary. If no problems are found, test is complete.

Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. Refer to any technical service bulletins that may apply. Perform a wiggle test on related wiring harnesses with engine running. Using scan tool, watch for GOOD TRIP counter to change to zero. If a problem is found, repair as necessary. If no problems are found, go to next step.

- Release fuel pressure. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect fuel pressure line from fuel filter/pressure regulator at fuel tank. Connect Fuel Line Pressure Test Adapter Hose (6539) between disconnected fuel line and fuel filter/pressure regulator. Connect fuel pressure gauge to fuel line adapter hose. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate ASD fuel system test and note fuel pressure. Fuel pressure should be 53-63 psi (365-434 kPa). If fuel pressure is as specified, stop ASD fuel system activation. Release fuel pressure, and repair or replace fuel supply line. If fuel pressure is not as specified, stop ASD fuel system activation and go to next step.
- Release fuel pressure. Remove fuel pump module and inspect fuel inlet strainer. If fuel inlet strainer is plugged, replace fuel pump inlet strainer. If fuel inlet strainer is not plugged, replace fuel pump module.
- Turn ignition off. Release fuel pressure. Disconnect fuel supply line from fuel rail. Install Fuel Line Pressure Test Adapter Hose (6539 for 5/16" fuel lines or 6631 for 3/8" fuel lines) between disconnected fuel line and fuel rail. Remove fuel fill cap. Insert other end of hose into a graduated container suitable for gasoline.
- Using scan tool, actuate ASD fuel system test for 7 seconds. If fuel volume is .5 pt. (.25L) or more, fuel volume is okay. Stop fuel system activation. Test is complete. If fuel volume is less than .5 pt. (.25L), check for a kinked fuel line between fuel pump module and fuel rail. Repair fuel lines as necessary and retest. If fuel line is okay, replace fuel pump module.
IDLE SPEED
Manufacturer does not list procedure for checking idle speed. Idle speed is controlled by PCM. No adjustment is required. PCM controls Idle Air Control (IAC) motor for proper idle speed. See SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - CARS - EXCEPT SEBRING COUPE & STRATUS COUPE article for diagnosis of incorrect IAC motor operation.
IGNITION TIMING
Ignition timing is controlled by PCM and is not adjustable.
SUMMARY
If no faults were found while performing basic diagnostic procedures, proceed to appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article. If no diagnostic trouble codes are found during self-diagnostics, proceed to appropriate TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article for diagnosis by symptom (i.e., ROUGH IDLE, NO-START, etc.) or intermittent diagnostic procedures.
