Removal Procedure
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-241684-S36257494482006081100000) in General Information.
- Remove the left front tire and wheel. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-241703-S14581567662006081100000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Remove the left and right stabilizer shaft link lower nut (3).
- Remove the stabilizer shaft link (2) from the stabilizer shaft.
- Remove the left and right stabilizer shaft insulators and brackets. Refer to «Stabilizer Shaft Insulator Replacement»(ref-241710-S11093743032006081100000) .
- Remove the stabilizer shaft from the left side of the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
- Install stabilizer shaft going in through left side of vehicle.
- Install the left and right stabilizer shaft insulators and brackets. Refer to «Stabilizer Shaft Insulator Replacement»(ref-241710-S11093743032006081100000) .
- Install the left and right stabilizer shaft links to the stabilizer shaft.
- Install the stabilizer shaft link lower nut (3). Tighten: Tighten the nut to 23 N.m (17 lb ft).
- Install the left front tire and wheel. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-241703-S14581567662006081100000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-241684-S36257494482006081100000) in General Information.
- Remove the left front tire and wheel. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-241703-S14581567662006081100000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Remove the left and right stabilizer shaft links. Refer to «Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement (FWD)»(ref-241710-S04940231792006081100000) or «Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement (AWD)»(ref-241710-S41656604822006081100000) .
- Remove the left and right stabilizer shaft insulators and brackets. Refer to «Stabilizer Shaft Insulator Replacement»(ref-241710-S11093743032006081100000) .
- Remove the stabilizer shaft from the left side of the vehicle.
- Install the stabilizer shaft from the left side of the vehicle.
- Install the left and right stabilizer shaft links. Refer to «Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement (FWD)»(ref-241710-S04940231792006081100000) or «Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement (AWD)»(ref-241710-S41656604822006081100000) .
- Install the left and right stabilizer shaft insulators and brackets. Refer to «Stabilizer Shaft Insulator Replacement»(ref-241710-S11093743032006081100000) .
- Install the left front tire and wheel. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-241703-S14581567662006081100000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Raise the vehicle and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-241684-S36257494482006081100000) in General Information.
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-241703-S14581567662006081100000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Remove the stabilizer shaft link upper nut (1).
- Remove the stabilizer shaft link lower nut (3).
- Remove the stabilizer shaft link (2) from the suspension strut and stabilizer shaft.
- Install the stabilizer link (2) to the suspension strut and stabilizer shaft.
- Install the stabilizer shaft link upper nut (1). Tighten: Tighten the nut to 23 N.m (17 lb ft).
- Install the stabilizer shaft link lower nut (3). Tighten: Tighten the nut to 23 N.m (17 lb ft).
- Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-241703-S14581567662006081100000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Raise the vehicle and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-241684-S36257494482006081100000) in General Information.
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-241703-S14581567662006081100000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Remove the stabilizer shaft link bolt and nut.
- Remove the stabilizer shaft link from the vehicle.
- Install the stabilizer link into the vehicle.
- Install the stabilizer shaft link bolt and nut. Tighten: Tighten the stabilizer shaft link nut to 23 N.m (17 lb ft).
- Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-241703-S14581567662006081100000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-241684-S36257494482006081100000) in General Information.
- Move/turn the tires in order to access the stabilizer shaft insulator brackets.
- Remove the left and right side stabilizer shaft insulator bracket bolts.
- Remove the left and right side stabilizer shaft insulator brackets.
- Remove the left and right side stabilizer shaft insulators (1) from the stabilizer shaft (2).
- Install the left and right side stabilizer shaft insulators (1) to the stabilizer shaft (2).
- Install the left and right side stabilizer shaft insulator brackets.
- Install the left and right side stabilizer shaft insulator bracket bolts. Tighten: Tighten the stabilizer shaft insulator bracket bolts to 48 N.m (35 lb ft).
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the lower control arm. Refer to «Lower Control Arm Replacement»(ref-241710-S06348524922006081100000) .
- Secure the lower control arm in a vice.
- Drill or grind off the ball stud rivet heads.
- Use a hammer and a drift punch in order to remove the rivets.
- Remove the ball stud from the lower control arm.
- Install the ball stud to the lower control arm.
- Install the NEW ball stud bolts facing down, away from the ball stud.
- Install the NEW ball stud nuts. Tighten: Tighten the NEW ball stud nuts to 68 N.m (50 lb ft).
- Install the lower control arm. Refer to «Lower Control Arm Replacement»(ref-241710-S06348524922006081100000) .
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-241684-S36257494482006081100000) in General Information.
- Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-241703-S14581567662006081100000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Disconnect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector (2).
- Remove the wheel speed sensor electrical connector from the bracket.
- Remove the brake caliper bracket with the brake caliper. Refer to «Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement - Front»(ref-241732-S30088878922006081100000) in Disc Brakes.
- Remove the brake rotor. Refer to «Brake Rotor Replacement - Front»(ref-241732-S40518848452006081100000) in Disc Brakes.
- Remove the wheel drive shaft nut.
- Use three wheel nuts in order to attach the J 28733-B to the wheel bearing/hub. See «Special Tools»(ref-241710-S16544601042006081100000) .
- Use the J 28733-B in order to push the wheel drive shaft out of the wheel bearing/hub. See «Special Tools»(ref-241710-S16544601042006081100000) .
- Remove and DISCARD the wheel bearing/hub bolts.
- Remove the wheel bearing/hub.
- Install the wheel bearing/hub.
- Install NEW wheel bearing/hub bolts. Tighten: Tighten the NEW wheel bearing/hub bolts to 130 N.m (96 lb ft).
- Install the wheel drive shaft nut.
- Install the brake rotor. Refer to «Brake Rotor Replacement - Front»(ref-241732-S40518848452006081100000) in Disc Brakes.
- Install the brake caliper bracket with the brake caliper. Refer to «Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement - Front»(ref-241732-S30088878922006081100000) in Disc Brakes.
- Install the wheel speed sensor electrical connector to the bracket.
- Connect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector (2).
- Install the tire and wheel. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-241703-S14581567662006081100000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-241684-S36257494482006081100000) in General Information.
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-241703-S14581567662006081100000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Remove the front wheel drive shaft bearing. Refer to «Wheel Bearing/Hub Replacement - Front»(ref-241710-S01982751942006081100000) .
- Remove the front lower control arm ball stud. Refer to «Lower Control Arm Replacement»(ref-241710-S06348524922006081100000) .
- Remove the outer tie rod end from the steering knuckle. Use the J 24319-B .
- Scribe the strut to the knuckle.
- Remove the bolts connecting the strut to the knuckle.
- Remove the knuckle from the vehicle.
- Install the knuckle to the vehicle.
- Install the bolts which connect the strut to the knuckle. Tighten: Tighten the strut to knuckle bolts to 123 N.m (90 lb ft).
- Install the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle. Refer to «Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement»(ref-241712-S26292995872006081100000) in Power Steering.
- Connect the front lower control arm ball stud to knuckle. Refer to «Lower Control Arm Replacement»(ref-241710-S06348524922006081100000) .
- Install the front wheel drive shaft bearing. Refer to «Wheel Bearing/Hub Replacement - Front»(ref-241710-S01982751942006081100000) .
- Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-241703-S14581567662006081100000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Turn the steering wheel in order to move the front of the applicable wheel to the outboard most position.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-241684-S36257494482006081100000) in General Information.
- Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-241703-S14581567662006081100000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Disconnect the ABS wheel speed sensor connector (2).
- Disconnect the ABS wheel speed sensor jumper harness from the harness retainer clips. Refer to «Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement - Front»(ref-241722-S12935651462006081100000) in Antilock Brake System.
- Remove the stabilizer shaft link. Refer to «Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement (FWD)»(ref-241710-S04940231792006081100000) or «Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement (AWD)»(ref-241710-S41656604822006081100000) .
- Remove the cotter pin (1) from the ball stud (3).
- Loosen the ball stud nut.
- Install the J 41820 over the ball stud and lower control arm as shown. See «Special Tools»(ref-241710-S16544601042006081100000) .
- Rotate the ball stud nut counterclockwise in order to separate the ball stud from the steering knuckle.
- Remove the lower control arm bolts and nuts.
- Remove the lower control arm.
- Install the lower control arm.
- Install the control arm bolts and nuts.
- Install the ball stud to the knuckle.
- Install the ball stud castle nut. Tighten: Tighten the ball stud castle nut to 55 N.m (40 lb ft).
- If necessary, tighten the ball stud castle nut in order to align the ball stud castle nut slot (1) to the ball stud cotter pin hole (2) as shown.
- Install a NEW cotter pin and bend the ends as shown in either example.
- Install the stabilizer shaft link. Refer to «Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement (FWD)»(ref-241710-S04940231792006081100000) or «Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement (AWD)»(ref-241710-S41656604822006081100000) .
- Install the ABS wheel speed sensor jumper harness to the harness retainer clips. Refer to «Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement - Front»(ref-241722-S12935651462006081100000) in Antilock Brake System.
- Install the ABS wheel speed sensor connector (2).
- Install the lower control arm nuts. Tighten: Tighten the lower control arm nuts to 113 N.m (83 lb ft).
- Install the tire and wheel. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-241703-S14581567662006081100000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the lower control arm. Refer to «Lower Control Arm Replacement»(ref-241710-S06348524922006081100000) .
- Secure the lower control arm in a vice.
- Mark the lower control arm along the flat edge of the bushing flange.
- Assemble the following bushing removal tools as shown: J 21474-27 1/2 Inch Puller Bolt Thrust Bearing. See «Special Tools»(ref-241710-S16544601042006081100000) . J 21474 Control Arm Bushing Installer. See «Special Tools»(ref-241710-S16544601042006081100000) . J 34126 Sprocket Bearing Remover. See «Special Tools»(ref-241710-S16544601042006081100000) . J 35379 Front Knuckle Support. See «Special Tools»(ref-241710-S16544601042006081100000) . J 21474-2 Bushing Installer Remover. See «Special Tools»(ref-241710-S16544601042006081100000) . J 21474-4 1/2 Inch Nut. See «Special Tools»(ref-241710-S16544601042006081100000) .
- Tighten the J 21474-4 until the bushing is removed from the control arm. See «Special Tools»(ref-241710-S16544601042006081100000) .
- Disassemble the bushing removal tools.
- Align the flat edge of the bushing flange to the mark in the control arm (1). Ensure that the flat edge of the bushing flange is 30 degrees (2) from the centerline of the lower control arm. Ensure that the thin slot in the bushing is facing outboard.
- Insert the bushing into the control arm.
- Assemble the following bushing installation tools as shown: J 21474-27 1/2 Inch Puller Bolt Thrust Bearing. See «Special Tools»(ref-241710-S16544601042006081100000) . J 21474 Control Arm Bushing Installer. See «Special Tools»(ref-241710-S16544601042006081100000) . J 21474-5 Control Arm Bushing Receiver. See «Special Tools»(ref-241710-S16544601042006081100000) . J 21474-4 1/2 Inch Nut. See «Special Tools»(ref-241710-S16544601042006081100000) .
- Tighten the J 21474-4 until the bushing is fully seated in the control arm. See «Special Tools»(ref-241710-S16544601042006081100000) .
- Disassemble the bushing installation tools.
- Install the lower control arm. Refer to «Lower Control Arm Replacement»(ref-241710-S06348524922006081100000) .
| CAUTION | If you are replacing the wheel(s), the wheel stud(s), the wheel nut(s) or the wheel bolt(s), install only new GM original equipment parts. Installation of used parts or non-GM original equipment parts may cause the wheel to loosen, loss of tire air pressure, poor vehicle handling and loss of vehicle control resulting in personal injury. |
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-241684-S36257494482006081100000) in General Information.
- Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-241703-S14581567662006081100000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Remove the brake caliper bracket with the brake caliper. Refer to «Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement - Front»(ref-241732-S30088878922006081100000) in Disc Brakes.
- Remove the brake rotor. Refer to «Brake Rotor Replacement - Front»(ref-241732-S40518848452006081100000) in Disc Brakes.
- Use the J 35917 in order to press the wheel stud (1) from the bearing/hub (2). See «Special Tools»(ref-241710-S16544601042006081100000) .
- Install a new wheel stud from the back side of the bearing/hub.
- Install three flat washers (1) to the wheel stud (3).
- Install a hex nut (2) to the wheel stud (3).
- Tighten the hex nut until the stud head is fully seated in the bearing/hub flange.
- Remove the hex nut and the washers from the wheel stud.
- Install the brake rotor. Refer to «Brake Rotor Replacement - Front»(ref-241732-S40518848452006081100000) in Disc Brakes.
- Install the brake caliper bracket with the brake caliper. Refer to «Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement - Front»(ref-241732-S30088878922006081100000) in Disc Brakes.
- Install the tire and wheel. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-241703-S14581567662006081100000) in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
Note. Avoid chipping or scratching the coating.
- Remove the wiper module. Refer to «Wiper Motor Module Replacement»(ref-241701-S15987951412006081100000) .
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-241684-S36257494482006081100000) .
- Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-241703-S14581567662006081100000) .
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the strut upper nuts.
- Raise the vehicle.
- Scribe the strut to the knuckle.
- Remove the strut lower bolts and nuts.
- Remove the strut.
- Install the strut.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install the strut upper nuts. Tighten: Tighten the strut upper nuts to 41 N.m (30 lb ft).
- Raise the vehicle.
- Install the strut lower bolts and nuts.
- Align the strut to the mark on the knuckle. Tighten: Tighten the strut lower nuts to 123 N.m (90 lb ft).
- Install the tire and wheel. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-241703-S14581567662006081100000) .
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install the wiper module. Refer to «Wiper Motor Module Replacement»(ref-241701-S15987951412006081100000) .
- Inspect the alignment. Refer to «Measuring Wheel Alignment»(ref-241714-S28247978332006081100000) .
