LUBRICATION

CAUTIONTransmission oil circulates between the transmission and the transfer case. In situations where transmission failures circulate debris into the transfer case, the transfer case must be disassembled, cleaned, and inspected for damage. See appropriate OVERHAUL article.

SERVICE INTERVALS

Every 12 months or at engine oil change intervals, check front axle and transfer case and add lubricant when necessary. A fluid loss could indicate a problem. Check and have it repaired, if needed. Check vent hose at transfer case for kinks and proper installation. More frequent lubrication may be required if vehicle frequently used off road.

CHECKING FLUID LEVELS

To get an accurate reading, the vehicle should be on a level surface. If the level is below the bottom of the filler plug hole, you may need to add some lubricant. (Scheme 16) When the differential is cold, add enough lubricant to raise the level to 1/2" (12 mm) below the filler plug hole. See RECOMMENDED FLUIDS. When the differential is at operating temperature (warm), add enough lubricant to raise the level to the bottom of the filler plug hole.
