REPLACEMENT PROCEDURES
| CAUTION | Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition key must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components. |
Removal (4.2L)
- Disconnect the negative battery negative cable. Remove the vacuum brake booster hose.
- Remove the battery positive lead from the solenoid. (Scheme 2) Remove the starter solenoid S-terminal lead nut from the solenoid. (Scheme 3) Remove the starter solenoid S-terminal lead from the solenoid.
- Remove the starter mount bolt and nut. Remove the starter motor. (Scheme 4)

Installation
- Install the starter motor. Install the starter motor mount bolt and nut. (Scheme 4) Tighten the starter mount bolt and nut to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168810-S29308634492004111800000).
- Connect the positive battery cable to the starter solenoid and secure the cable with a nut. (Scheme 2) Tighten the positive cable nut to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168810-S29308634492004111800000).
- Install the starter solenoid S-terminal lead to the solenoid and secure the lead with a nut. (Scheme 3) Tighten the S-terminal nut to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168810-S29308634492004111800000).
- Install the vacuum brake booster hose. Connect the battery negative cable. Tighten cable to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168810-S29308634492004111800000).
Removal (5.3L)
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
- Remove the rear steering gear crossmember. (Scheme 5) Remove the wire harness from the wire harness retaining clips on the transmission oil cooler line bracket.
- Remove the transmission oil cooler line bracket bolt. (Scheme 6) Remove the right transmission cover bolt.
- Remove the starter bolts. Move the starter toward the front of the vehicle, and remove the transmission cover. Remove the starter solenoid heat shield. Tilt and rotate the starter in order to pass the starter between the transmission oil cooler lines and the engine oil pan.
- Remove the starter solenoid nut. Remove the starter lead from the solenoid stud. (Scheme 7) Remove the battery positive cable nut. Remove the battery positive cable from the starter solenoid. (Scheme 8) Finish removing the starter from the vehicle.

- Begin installing the starter between the transmission oil cooler lines and the engine oil pan. Install the battery positive cable to the starter stud. Install the battery positive cable nut. (Scheme 8) Tighten the nut to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168810-S29308634492004111800000).
- Install the starter solenoid lead to the solenoid stud. Install the starter solenoid nut. (Scheme 7) Tighten the nut to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168810-S29308634492004111800000).
- Install the starter solenoid heat shield. Slide the starter toward the front of the vehicle. Position the transmission cover to the transmission. Position the starter to the engine. Install the starter bolts. Tighten the bolts to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168810-S29308634492004111800000).
- Install the right transmission cover bolt. Tighten the bolt to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168810-S29308634492004111800000). Install the transmission oil cooler line bracket bolt. Tighten the bolt to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168810-S29308634492004111800000).
- Attach the wire harness to the wire harness retaining clips on the transmission oil cooler line bracket. Install the rear steering gear crossmember. Tighten crossmember mounting bolts to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168810-S29308634492004111800000). Lower the vehicle. Connect the negative battery cable.
