REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTIONBefore servicing any electrical component, the ignition key must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

Removal (2.0L)

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the air cleaner hose. Disconnect the starter solenoid electrical connector. Remove the retaining nut and positive battery cable from the starter solenoid.
  2. The starter motor on manual transmission equipped vehicles are secured with 2 bolts. The starter motor on automatic transmission equipped vehicles are secured with a lower bolt and an upper nut and bolt. Remove the upper mounting bolt and the negative battery cable from the starter motor assembly. Remove the lower mounting bolt and the starter motor assembly from the vehicle.

Installation

  1. Install the starter motor assembly to the vehicle. Install the lower mounting bolt. Install the upper mounting bolt and the negative battery cable. Tighten the starter motor assembly mounting bolts to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-126046-S18145812432001101900000) .
  2. Connect the positive battery cable to the starter solenoid. Secure with one nut. Tighten the starter solenoid nut to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-126046-S18145812432001101900000) .
  3. Connect the starter solenoid electrical connector. Install the air cleaner hose. Connect the negative battery cable. Tighten the negative battery cable-to-negative battery terminal retainer to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-126046-S18145812432001101900000) .

Removal (2.5L)

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the starter solenoid electrical connector. Remove the retaining nut and positive battery cable from the starter solenoid. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the 2 bolts from the starting motor. Lower the vehicle. Remove the starting motor through the front area of the engine compartment between the generator and the inner fender.
  1. Install the starting motor through the front area of the engine compartment between the generator and the inner fender. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Install the mounting bolts. Tighten the starter motor mounting bolts to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-126046-S18145812432001101900000) .
  3. Lower the vehicle. Connect the positive battery cable to the starter solenoid. Secure with the nut. Tighten the starter solenoid nut to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-126046-S18145812432001101900000) .
  4. Connect the starter solenoid electrical connector. Connect the negative battery cable. Tighten the negative battery cable-to-negative battery terminal retainer to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-126046-S18145812432001101900000) .
