Rear Window Wiper and Washer Switch Replacement

WARNING: Refer to SIR Warning . Preliminary Procedure Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement . Remove the steering column shroud. Refer to Steering Column Shroud Replacement (Without Electronic Tilt Steering) or Steering Column Shroud Replacement (With Electronic Tilt Steering) .
1Multifunction Turn Signal Switch Screw (Qty: 2) CAUTION: Refer to Fastener Caution . Tighten: 3 N.m (27 lb in)
2Multifunction Turn Signal Switch Tip: The wipers/washer switch is integral to the multifunction turn signal switch. Disconnect the electrical connectors as needed.

Scheme 3: Windshield Washer Hose Replacement

Preliminary Procedures Open the hood. Remove the left front wheelhouse liner. Refer to Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement - Left Side . Disconnect the washer hose from the washer pump spout.

2Windshield Washer Nozzle Hose Tip: Disconnect the hose at the left rear fender flange.
3Windshield Washer Pump Hose Assembly Tip: Route the new hose in the same location as the old hose was removed from.

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-364496-S07186948972010063000000) .
  2. Remove the left front wheel assembly. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-364499-S02143103562010063000000) .
  3. Remove the left front wheelhouse liner. Refer to «Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement - Left Side»(ref-364494-S30302040332010063000000) .
  4. Disconnect the washer pump hoses (1, 2) from the left side fender flange. Refer to «Windshield Washer Hose Replacement»(ref-364467-S11742459822010063000000) .
  5. Drain the windshield washer solvent into a suitable container.
  6. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  7. Lower the vehicle in order to access the hood latch.
  8. Open the hood.
  9. Remove the windshield washer solvent cap.
  10. Remove the auxiliary battery tray, if equipped. Refer to «Battery Tray Replacement»(ref-364485-S01628381852010063000000) .
  11. Remove the upper windshield washer container bolt from under the auxiliary battery tray, if equipped.
  12. Remove the upper windshield washer solvent container bolts.
  13. Remove the windshield washer solvent container assembly (2).

Installation Procedure

  1. Transfer washer pumps and level indicator to the new washer solvent container.
  2. Install the windshield washer container assembly.
  3. Install the upper windshield washer container bolt to the auxiliary battery tray, if equipped.
  4. Install the upper windshield washer solvent container bolts and tighten to 9 N.m (80 lb in).
  5. Install the auxiliary battery tray, if equipped. Refer to «Battery Tray Replacement»(ref-364485-S01628381852010063000000) .
  6. Install the windshield washer solvent cap.
  7. Connect the electrical connectors.
  8. Connect the washer pump hoses (1, 2). Refer to «Windshield Washer Hose Replacement»(ref-364467-S11742459822010063000000) .
  9. Install the left front wheelhouse liner. Refer to «Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement - Left Side»(ref-364494-S30302040332010063000000) .
  10. Install the left front wheel assembly. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-364499-S02143103562010063000000) .
  11. Fill the washer solvent container with windshield solvent. Refer to «Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations (USA and Canada)»(ref-364508-S19004340532010063000000) .

Scheme 4: Windshield Washer Pump Replacement

Preliminary Procedures Remove the windshield washer container. Refer to Windshield Washer Solvent Container Replacement . Using 2 flat-bladed tools, gently pry the windshield washer solvent pump from the front side of the washer container. Discard the old windshield washer solvent pump grommet.

Scheme 5: Rear Window Washer Pump Replacement

Preliminary Procedures Remove the windshield washer container. Refer to Windshield Washer Solvent Container Replacement . Using 2 flat-bladed tools, gently pry the rear washer solvent pump from the front side of the washer container. Discard the old rear washer solvent pump grommet.

Scheme 6: Windshield Washer Solvent Level Indicator Replacement

Preliminary Procedures Remove the windshield washer container. Refer to Windshield Washer Solvent Container Replacement . Using 2 flat-bladed tools, gently pry the windshield washer solvent level indicator from the side of the washer container. Discard the old windshield washer solvent level indicator grommet.
1Windshield Washer Solvent Level Indicator Tip: Ensure the square edge faces upward upon installation of the new level indicator.
2Windshield Washer Solvent Level Indicator Grommet Tip: Discard the old grommet and use the new grommet in the kit.

Scheme 7: Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement

Preliminary Procedure Remove the fixed antenna, if equipped. Refer to Radio Antenna Replacement . Remove the windshield wiper arms. Refer to Windshield Wiper Arm Replacement (Chevrolet Hybrid Two-mode) or Windshield Wiper Arm Replacement (Conventional) . Remove the rear hood seal. Refer to Hood Rear Seal Replacement .

Scheme 8: Windshield Wiper Arm Replacement (Chevrolet Hybrid Two-mode)

1Windshield Washer Arm Finish Cap Tip: Lift the cap from the outside edge and rotate the cap forward in order to expose the wiper arm nut.
2Windshield Washer Arm Nut CAUTION: Refer to Fastener Caution . Tip: Hold the wiper blade arm tip to the vertical black bar target mark located at the lower center portion of the windshield while securing the nut. Tighten: 35 N.m (26 lb ft)
3Windshield Wiper Arm Assembly Procedure Use the J-39637: Wiper Arm Remover Tool. Transfer the wiper blade to the new windshield wiper arm. Refer to Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement . Special Tools: J-39637: Wiper Arm Remover Tool

Scheme 9: Windshield Wiper Arm Replacement (Conventional)

Procedure Open the hood in order to access and remove the wiper arm assembly. Remove the windshield wiper blade from the windshield wiper arm and transfer to the new wiper arm.
1Windshield Washer Arm Finish Cap Tip: Use a small flat-bladed tool to remove the finish cap.
2Windshield Washer Arm Nut CAUTION: Refer to Fastener Caution . Tip: Hold the wiper blade arm tip to the vertical black bar target mark located at the lower center portion of the windshield wile securing the nut. Tighten: 35 N.m (26 lb ft)
3Windshield Washer Arm Hose Tip: Disconnect the washer hose at the air inlet panel.
4Windshield Washer Arm Assembly Tip: Use the J-39637: Wiper Arm Remover Tool. Special Tools: J-39637: Wiper Arm Remover Tool

Scheme 10: Rear Window Wiper Arm Replacement (Yukon, Tahoe, Hybrid Two-mode)

Preliminary Procedure Electrically cycle the wiper arm to the mid-wipe position on the rear window prior to wiper arm nut cap removal. Clean the knurls on the rear wiper motor pivot shaft after the rear wiper arm has been removed.
1Rear Wiper Arm Nut Cap Tip: Lift up on rearward end of cap to disengage the cap from the rear wiper arm.
2Rear Window Wiper Arm Nut CAUTION: Refer to Fastener Caution . Tip: Clean the knurls on the pivot shaft prior to installing the wiper arm to the pivot shaft. Tighten: 9 N.m (80 lb in)
3Rear Wiper Arm Washer Hose Tip: Disconnect the washer hose from the liftgate washer hose elbow.
4Rear Window Wiper Arm Assembly Procedure Electrically PARK the rear wiper motor. Place the arm onto the pivot shaft while holding the wiper arm tab firmly into the park ramp pocket. Secure the nut. Perform a wet wipe and inspect the park position of the rear wiper arm in the park ramp.

Scheme 11: Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

Preliminary Procedure: Raise the wiper arm to the full up (service up) position off the windshield.
1Windshield Wiper Arm Assembly Tip: Do not let the wiper arm come in contact with the windshield assembly.
2Windshield Wiper Arm Blade Tip: Release the tab under the sheep hook and pull the wiper blade rearward from the sheep hook.

Scheme 12: Rear Window Wiper Blade Replacement (Except Avalanche)

Preliminary Procedures Key ON, Engine OFF, electrically PARK the rear window wiper arm at the mid-wipe position. Lift the rear wiper arm from the rear liftgate glass. Detach the rear window wiper blade from the rear window wiper arm. Carefully set the rear window wiper arm on the glass. Replace the rear window wiper blade. Electrically PARK the rear window wiper arm into the rear wiper arm park ramp. Cycle the ignition key OFF.

Scheme 13: Rear Window Wiper Motor Replacement

Preliminary Procedures Remove the liftgate interior trim panel. Refer to Liftgate Trim Panel Replacement . Remove the rear wiper arm assembly. Refer to Rear Window Wiper Blade Replacement (Except Avalanche) . Remove the rear wiper motor pivot shaft nut and spacer.
1Rear Window Wiper Motor Assembly Bolt (Qty: 2) CAUTION: Refer to Fastener Caution . Tip: Tighten the rear wiper motor pivot shaft nut after the motor and pivot shaft spacer have been installed. Tighten: 9 N.m (80 lb in)
2Rear Window Wiper Motor Assembly Procedure Pull the wiper motor forward towards the front of the vehicle. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the rear wiper motor from the inner liftgate panel. Check the rear wiper shaft spacer upon installation of the new wiper motor to ensure proper position of the spacer to the rear liftgate panel.

Scheme 14: Windshield Wiper System Module Replacement

Preliminary Procedure Remove the wiper arms. Refer to Windshield Wiper Arm Replacement (Chevrolet Hybrid Two-mode) or Windshield Wiper Arm Replacement (Conventional) . Remove the air inlet grille panels. Refer to Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement .
1Windshield Wiper System Module Assembly Bolt (Qty: 3) CAUTION: Refer to Fastener Caution . Tighten: 9 N.m (80 lb in)
2Windshield Wiper System Module Assembly Tip: Raise the module and disconnect the electrical connector.

Scheme 15: Windshield Outside Moisture Sensor Replacement

1Rain Sensor Module Trim Cover Procedure: Gently pry the trim cover outward in order to remove the cover from the rain sensor module.
2Electrical Connector Procedure: Disconnect the electrical connector.
3Rain Sensor Module and Retainer Clips Procedure Disengage the two metal retaining clips from the mounting bracket on the windshield. Remove the entire sensor from the windshield. Remove the old conductive gel residue from the windshield. Clean the area of the windshield that contacts the windshield moisture sensor lens with a 50/50 mixture of isopropyl alcohol and water by volume on a dampened lint-free cloth. Remove the plastic protective covering from the lens of the new sensor. Position and install the moisture sensor back onto the windshield bracket. Engage the two metal retaining clips to the mounting bracket on the windshield. Connect the electrical cover. Secure the rain sensor module trim cover.

Scheme 16: Windshield Outside Moisture Sensor Lens Replacement

Procedure: Remove the rain sensor module from the windshield bracket. Refer to Windshield Outside Moisture Sensor Replacement .
1Windshield Moisture Sensor Procedure Wearing latex rubber gloves, hold the moisture sensor in the left or right hand. Release the 3 clips securing the lens to the sensor. Be careful when disengaging the sensor and the lens cover, keep the sensor electronics free from any dirt, debris or foreign material while open. Discard the old moisture sensor lens.

3Windshield Moisture Sensor Lens Cover Procedure Remove the old conductive jell residue from the windshield mounting bracket. Clean the area of the windshield that contacts the windshield moisture sensor lens with a 50/50 mixture of isopropyl alcohol and water by volume on a dampened lint free cloth. Align and secure the two sensor halves back as one unit. Remove the plastic protective covering from the lens. Position and install the moisture sensor back onto the windshield bracket. Connect the electrical cover. Secure the rain sensor module trim cover.

1Rear Window Wiper Arm Park Ramp Nut CAUTION: Refer to Fastener Caution . Tighten: 9 N.m (80 lb in)
2Rear Window Wiper Arm Park Ramp Tip: Upon installation, align the pin in the rear of the ramp to the hole in the liftgate outer panel.
