INTRODUCTION
The following diagnostic steps help prevent overlooking simple problems. This is also where to begin diagnosis for no-start condition.
The first step in diagnosing any driveability problem is verifying the customer's complaint by test driving vehicle under the conditions in which the problem reportedly occurred.
Before entering self-diagnostics, perform a careful and complete visual inspection. Most engine control problems result from mechanical breakdowns, poor electrical connections or damaged/misrouted vacuum hoses. Before condemning the computerized system, perform each test listed.
Note. Unless otherwise instructed in test procedures, perform all voltage tests using a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance.
The following table provides location of commonly used diagnostic information. These former "A" and "C" charts are now written in text and inserted into appropriate location of engine performance workflow. GENERAL MOTORS A & C CHART REFERENCE
VISUAL INSPECTION
Visually inspect all electrical wiring. Look for chafed, stretched, cut or pinched wiring. Ensure electrical connectors fit tightly and are not corroded. Ensure vacuum hoses are properly routed and not pinched or cut. If necessary, see VACUUM DIAGRAMS article to verify routing and connections. Inspect air induction system for possible vacuum leaks.
Compression
Check engine mechanical condition using a compression gauge, vacuum gauge or engine analyzer capable of performing a relative compression test. If using engine analyzer, see engine analyzer instruction manual for availability and description of relative compression feature.
| WARNING | Because fuel injectors on many models are triggered by ignition switch during cranking mode, DO NOT use ignition switch during compression tests. Use a remote starter to crank engine to prevent fire hazard or engine's oiling system contamination. |
Exhaust System Backpressure
Before replacing any components, check exhaust system for restrictions. Use a vacuum gauge or a low-pressure (1-5 psi) gauge to check exhaust system.
If using a vacuum gauge, connect gauge to intake manifold vacuum, and start engine. Observe gauge while holding throttle steady at 2000-2500 RPM. If vacuum gauge reading slowly drops after stabilizing, exhaust system may be restricted.
- Check At Oxygen Sensor Remove oxygen sensor. Install backpressure tester in place of oxygen sensor. After test is completed, coat oxygen sensor threads with anti-seize compound before installation.
- Diagnosis Start engine and bring to operating temperature. Increase engine speed to 2000-2500 RPM. Note gauge. Exhaust system is restricted if reading exceeds 1.25 psi (.09 kg/cm 2 ). Check exhaust system for collapsed pipe, heat distress and possible internal muffler failure. If none of these conditions exists, check for restricted catalytic converter. Replace as required.
DEFINITION
No-start is defined as engine cranks okay but does not start. Engine may fire a few times.
Note. Before performing following tests, check battery condition, engine cranking speed and fuel supply.
General Inspection
- Ensure proper starting procedure is being used. Visually check vacuum hoses for splits, kinks and proper connections, as shown on Vehicle Emission Control Information label. Check ignition wires for cracking, hardness and proper connections at both coil pack and spark plugs.

FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELIEF
| WARNING | Begin fuel system trouble shooting and diagnosis with fuel system pressure test. Relieve fuel system pressure before disconnecting any components or installing fuel pressure gauge. |
Fuel system is under pressure, which must be relieved before servicing fuel system. Fuel pressure may be relieved by one of the following methods.
- Disconnect negative battery terminal. Loosen fuel filler cap.
- Install Fuel Pressure Gauge (J-34730-1A) to fuel pressure test head. Wrap shop towel around pressure connection when installing fuel pressure gauge to absorb fuel leakage. Place gauge bleed hose in container. Open bleed valve to relieve fuel pressure.
Test Description
The numbers below refer to the step numbers in the diagnostic procedure.
- 2 Wrap a shop towel around the fuel pressure connection to absorb any small amount of fuel leakage that may occur when installing the fuel pressure gauge. Turn ON the ignition leaving the engine OFF, the fuel pressure should be 60-66 psi (415-455 kPa) when the pump is running. This pressure is controlled by a spring pressure within the regulator assembly.
- 4 The fuel pressure that continues to fall is caused by one of the following items: The in-tank modular fuel sender is not holding pressure. The fuel pressure regulator valve is leaking. A Central SFI injector is leaking. Fuel line is leaking.
- 15 If the fuel pressure is less than 55 psi (379 kPa) at idle, it falls into the following 3 areas: The pressure is regulated but less than 55 psi (379 kPa). The amount of fuel reaching the injector is sufficient, but the pressure is too low. The system will run lean, hard starting cold, no start, overall poor performance, and may set a DTC. See FUEL SYSTEM test in «A-3, NO-START DIAGNOSIS»(/chevrolet/suburban/ix-1991-2001/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-basic-diagnostic-procedures-gasoline) . A restricted flow causing pressure drop. Normally, a vehicle with a fuel pressure of less than 44 psi (300 kPa) at idle is inoperable. However, if the pressure drop occurs only while driving, the engine will normally surge then stop running as the pressure begins to drop rapidly. This is most likely caused by a restricted fuel line or plugged fuel filter. A leaking or contaminated pressure regulator valve or seat interface may not allow the regulated pressure to be achieved.
- 21 DO NOT allow the fuel pressure to exceed 75 psi (517 kPa). Excessive pressure may damage the fuel system. Restricting the fuel return line allows the fuel pressure to build above regulated pressure. With the fuel pump commanded ON, the fuel pressure should rise above 66 psi (455 kPa), as the valve in the return line is partially closed.
- 26 When the engine is idling, the manifold pressure is low (high vacuum) and is applied to the fuel pressure regulator diaphragm. This will offset the spring and result in a lower fuel pressure. This idle pressure will vary somewhat depending on the barometric pressure. However, the pressure at idle should be less, indicating the pressure regulator control.
- 29 If the injector(s) is not grounded, physically remove suspect injector(s) and inspect for a fuel leak while system is pressurized. If the fuel injector(s) are not leaking and fuel pressure is not holding, the fuel pressure regulator should be inspected for a slow diaphragm leak.
| WARNING | Begin fuel system trouble shooting and diagnosis with fuel system pressure test. Relieve fuel system pressure before disconnecting any components or installing fuel pressure gauge. |
- Perform «ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK»(/chevrolet/suburban/ix-1991-2001/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-basic-diagnostic-procedures-gasoline__on-board-diagnostic-obd-system-check) . After performing OBD system check, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Relieve fuel pressure. See «FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELIEF»(/chevrolet/suburban/ix-1991-2001/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-basic-diagnostic-procedures-gasoline__fuel-system-pressure-relief) . Connect Fuel Pressure Gauge (J-34730-1A) to fuel pressure test port. Turn ignition on with engine off. Bleed air out of fuel pressure gauge into container. The ignition may have to be cycled off for 10 seconds, then back on more than once in order to obtain maximum fuel pressure. Monitor fuel pressure with fuel pump running. Fuel pressure should be 60-66 psi (4.2-4.6 kg/cm 2 ) on Central Sequential Fuel Injection (CSFI) fuel system and 56-62 psi (4.0-4.4 kg/cm 2 ) on Sequential Fuel Injection (SFI) fuel system, and should hold steady. If fuel pressure is as specified, go to next step. If fuel pressure is not as specified, go to step 8 .
- Turn ignition off for 10 seconds with A/C off. Turn ignition on. Fuel pump should run for 2 seconds. Observe fuel pressure after pump stops running. Fuel pressure may vary a few pounds, then should hold steady. After fuel pump stops, fuel pressure should stabilize and remain constant at 55-60 psi (3.9-4.2 kg/cm 2 ) on CSI system and 48-52 psi (3.4-3.7 kg/cm 2 ) on SFI system. If pressure is within specification and holds, go to step 5 . If pressure is not as specified, go to next step.

Diagnostic Aids
Note. Numbers below refer to the step numbers in diagnostic test.
Note. Battery should be fully charged prior to any tests.
- Perform the OBD system check before proceeding unless it was already performed.
- Checks for proper output from the enhanced ignition system. The spark tester requires a minimum of 25,000 volts to operate. This check can be used in case of an ignition miss, because the system may provide enough voltage to run the engine but not enough to operate a spark plug under heavy load.
- This test separates distributor cap, rotor and ignition wires from ignition coil in order to help identify a secondary ignition system problem.
- This test checks ignition control module, connections, and wiring.
- This test begins to determine if the VCM is providing a signal to the ignition control module. If the VCM is not providing a signal to the ignition control module, the problem exists between the ignition control module and the VCM.
- This test checks for a basic engine mechanical problem.
IDLE SPEED & IGNITION TIMING
Ensure idle speed and ignition timing are set to specifications. For specifications, see SPECIFICATIONS article. For adjustment procedures, see ADJUSTMENTS article.
ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK
Note. Use of Tech 1 scan tool is required to perform ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK.
The OBD System Check determines
- If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) works.
- If PCM/VCM is operating and can recognize a fault.
- If any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are stored.
After performing procedures in PRELIMINARY INSPECTION & ADJUSTMENTS, BASIC FUEL SYSTEM CHECKS and BASIC IGNITION SYSTEM CHECKS, this is the starting point for utilizing the self-diagnostic system for determining computer-related problems. After performing necessary tests as described in the OBD system circuit check, if no codes are indicated and driveability problems still exist, see TESTS W/O CODES article and SCAN TESTER usage in TESTS W/CODES article.
- Turn ignition on with engine off. Observe Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL). If MIL illuminates, go to next step. If MIL does not illuminate, go to «A-1, MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT (MIL)»(/chevrolet/suburban/ix-1991-2001/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-basic-diagnostic-procedures-gasoline__a-1-malfunction-indicator-light-mil) .
- Turn ignition off. Install Tech 1 scan tool and follow scan tool manufacturer's instructions to proceed with test. Turn ignition on. If scan tool displays PCM data, go to next step. If scan tool does not display PCM data, go to A-2, NO SCAN TOOL DATA.
