Removal Procedure

Tools Required

  1. J 22364-01 Drum to Brake Shoe Clearance Gage. See «Special Tools»(ref-238260-S42045467462006072400000) .
  2. J 42450-A Wheel Hub Resurfacing Kit
CAUTIONRefer to Brake Dust Caution .
  1. Remove the rear tire and wheel. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-238261-S35716783552006072400000) .
  2. Remove the rear brake drum retainer, if necessary.
  3. Remove the rear brake drum.
  4. If the brake drum cannot be removed, perform the following. Remove the rubber plug from the backing plate. Insert a screwdriver (2), until contact has been made with the adjuster lever (4). Slightly push the adjuster lever (4) away from the adjuster (1). Using a second screwdriver (3,) rotate the adjuster (1) in a upward motion until the adjuster is seated. Remove the brake drum.
  5. Using the J 42450-A , clean the mating surface between the rear axle flange and brake drum.

Installation Procedure

  1. Using the J 22364-01 (1), measure the brake drum. See «Special Tools»(ref-238260-S42045467462006072400000) .
  2. Using the J 22364-01 (1), adjust the rear brake shoes. See «Special Tools»(ref-238260-S42045467462006072400000) .
  3. Install the rear brake drum.
  4. Install the rear tire and wheel. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-238261-S35716783552006072400000) .

Brake Shoe Replacement

Tools Required

  1. J 38400 Brake Shoe Spanner & Spring Remover. See «Special Tools»(ref-238260-S42045467462006072400000) .
  2. J 21177-A Drum to Brake Shoe Clearance Gage. See «Special Tools»(ref-238260-S42045467462006072400000) .
CAUTIONRefer to Brake Dust Caution .
  1. Remove the rear brake drum. Refer to «Brake Drum Replacement»(ref-238260-S13515698222006072400000) .
  2. Using denatured alcohol, clean the rear brake shoes.
  3. Remove the adjuster assembly. Refer to «Drum Brake Adjusting Hardware Replacement»(ref-238260-S34295233692006072400000) .
  4. Using a pair of channel locks, remove the retractor spring from the secondary brake shoe.
  5. Remove the secondary brake shoe from the backing plate.
  6. Using a pair of channel locks, remove the retractor spring from the primary brake shoe.
  7. Remove the primary brake shoe from the backing plate.
  8. Remove the return spring.
  9. Using a small flat-blade screwdriver, press the lock tab for the park brake cable.
  10. Hold the lock tab in place.
  11. Push the park brake cable forward.
  12. Remove the park brake cable from the lever.
  1. Apply a small amount of high temperature silicone grease or equivalent to the contact areas between the rear brake shoes and the backing plate.
  2. Install the park brake cable in the lever.
  3. Install the retractor spring on the backing plate.
  4. Using a pair of channel locks, install the retractor spring in the primary brake shoe.
  5. Install the secondary brake shoe on the backing plate.
  6. Using J 38400 or equivalent, install the retractor spring in the secondary brake shoe. See «Special Tools»(ref-238260-S42045467462006072400000) .
  7. Install the park brake adjusting hardware. Refer to «Drum Brake Adjusting Hardware Replacement»(ref-238260-S34295233692006072400000) .
  8. Using the J 22364-01 (1), adjust the rear brake shoes. See «Special Tools»(ref-238260-S42045467462006072400000) .
  9. Install the rear brake drum. Refer to «Brake Drum Replacement»(ref-238260-S13515698222006072400000) .

Scheme 96: Removal Procedure
  1. Remove the park brake cable. Refer to one of the following procedures: For the left park brake cable, refer to «Park Brake Cable Replacement - Front»(ref-238208-S35190152572006072400000) in Park Brake. For the right park brake cable, refer to «Park Brake Cable Replacement - Left Rear (w/Rear Drum)»(ref-238208-S06561410342006072400000) or «Park Brake Cable Replacement - Left Rear (w/Rear Disc)»(ref-238208-S34486576312006072400000) in Park Brake.
  2. Remove the wheel cylinder. Refer to «Wheel Cylinder Replacement»(ref-238260-S17760380332006072400000) .
  3. Remove the rear axle shaft. Refer to «Rear Axle Shaft Replacement (8.6, 9.5/9.5LD Inch Axles)»(ref-238258-S15427994742006072400000) or «Rear Axle Shaft Replacement (8.6 Inch Axle w/Drum Brakes)»(ref-238258-S39811999252006072400000) in Rear Drive Axle.
  4. Remove the backing plate bolts.
  5. Remove the backing plate.
  1. Position the backing plate on the rear axle housing.
  2. Install the backing plate bolts. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 135 N.m (100 lb ft).
  3. Install the rear axle shaft. Refer to «Rear Axle Shaft Replacement (8.6, 9.5/9.5LD Inch Axles)»(ref-238258-S15427994742006072400000) or «Rear Axle Shaft Replacement (8.6 Inch Axle w/Drum Brakes)»(ref-238258-S39811999252006072400000) in Rear Drive Axle.
  4. Install the wheel cylinder. Refer to «Wheel Cylinder Replacement»(ref-238260-S17760380332006072400000) .
  5. Install the park brake cable. Refer to one of the following procedures: For the left park brake cable, refer to «Park Brake Cable Replacement - Front»(ref-238208-S35190152572006072400000) in Park Brake. For the right park brake cable, refer to «Park Brake Cable Replacement - Left Rear (w/Rear Drum)»(ref-238208-S06561410342006072400000) or «Park Brake Cable Replacement - Left Rear (w/Rear Disc)»(ref-238208-S34486576312006072400000) in Park Brake.
CAUTIONRefer to Brake Dust Caution .
  1. Remove the rear brake drum. Refer to «Brake Drum Replacement»(ref-238260-S13515698222006072400000) .
  2. Adjust the brake shoe to the lowest setting.
  3. Remove the adjuster spring.
  4. Remove the brake adjuster lever.
  5. Remove the adjuster assembly.
  1. Install the adjuster assembly.
  2. Install the adjuster lever.
  3. Install the adjuster spring.
  4. Measure the rear brake drum. Refer to «Brake Drum Diameter Measurement»(ref-238260-S25888941782006072400000) .
  5. Adjust the rear drum brakes. Refer to «Drum Brake Adjustment»(ref-238260-S11632092292006072400000) .
  6. Install the brake drum. Refer to «Brake Drum Replacement»(ref-238260-S13515698222006072400000) .

  1. Remove the rear brake shoes. Refer to «Brake Shoe Replacement»(ref-238260-S24410877572006072400000) .
  2. Disconnect the brake line from the wheel cylinder.
  3. Plug or cap the brake line fitting as not to allow the brake fluid to become contaminated.
  4. Remove the wheel cylinder bolts.
  5. Remove the wheel cylinder.
  1. Install the wheel cylinder.
  2. Install the wheel cylinder bolts. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 18 N.m (13 lb ft).
  3. Remove the plug or cap from the brake line fitting.
  4. Connect the brake line to the wheel cylinder. Tighten: Tighten the fitting to 19 N.m (14 lb ft).
  5. Install the rear brake shoes. Refer to «Brake Shoe Replacement»(ref-238260-S24410877572006072400000) .
  6. Bleed the brake system. Refer to «Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding (Manual)»(ref-238227-S21022821802006072400000) .
  7. Check the master cylinder fluid level, add fluid if necessary. Refer to «Master Cylinder Reservoir Filling»(ref-238227-S42157669712006072400000) .
