Heater System: Removal & Installation Chevrolet Prizm I

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNINGTo avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and carefully follow all SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM procedures in AIR BAG SYSTEM SAFETY article in GENERAL SERVICING.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove glove box. Disconnect blower motor connector. Remove screws and blower motor from vehicle. To install, reverse removal procedure. (Scheme 1)

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove glove box. Disconnect blower resistor connector. Remove screw and resistor. To install, reverse removal procedure. (Scheme 1)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect cigarette lighter, ashtray bulb, and hazard switch electrical connectors from center trim bezel. Remove cigarette lighter and ashtray bulbs from center trim bezel. Remove center trim bezel from instrument panel.
  2. Remove screws and heater control panel from instrument panel. Disconnect control cables from control panel (if necessary). Remove blower speed control knob. Remove clip, harness connector, screws and blower speed selector switch from control panel. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Remove center console trim bezel and heater control panel. See BLOWER SPEED SELECTOR SWITCH . Remove knee bolster. Remove appropriate control cable from heater control panel.

Remove control cable from heater case and appropriate door control linkage. To install, reverse removal procedure. Adjust replaced/repaired cable. See ADJUSTMENTS .

  1. Remove instrument panel. See «INSTRUMENT PANEL»(ref-245-S26798140282000030800000). Drain coolant from cooling system. Disconnect heater hoses from heater core at firewall. Remove heater core pipe grommet. Disconnect blower motor and blower motor resistor connectors.
  2. Separate rear seat heater ducts from heater assembly. Remove heater case from vehicle. (Scheme 2) Remove 4 screws and 2 heater core mounting brackets from heater case. Remove heater core from case. To install, reverse removal procedure.

  1. Disable air bag system. See AIR BAG SYSTEM SAFETY article in GENERAL SERVICING. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove kick panels. Remove driver's side knee bolster. Remove lower steering column cover. Remove screw next to ignition switch. Remove upper steering column cover.
  2. Remove driver's front carpet retainer. Disconnect hood release handle from knee bolster. Remove driver's side knee bolster. Remove driver's air duct from under steering column. Disconnect steering column electrical connectors. Remove steering column pinch bolt. Remove bolts/nuts attaching steering column to instrument panel. Remove steering column from vehicle.
  3. Remove 2 screws and pull outward to disengage retaining clips for instrument cluster trim plate. Remove instrument panel cluster retaining screws. Disconnect instrument panel cluster electrical connectors. Remove instrument panel cluster. Remove center console trim plate. See «BLOWER SPEED SELECTOR SWITCH»(ref-245-S24706174222000030800000). Remove 4 radio mounting screws and gently pull radio clear of console. Disconnect antenna and wiring, and remove radio. Remove glove box and striker support screw.
  4. Remove passenger's air duct from instrument panel. Remove "A" pillar lower trim panel from both sides. Remove 2 screws attaching center console to rear center console. On manual transmission models, remove gear shift control lever upper boot from front floor console. On automatic equipped vehicles, gently pry on rear of front floor console trim plate to remove.
  5. On all models, remove center console lower tray by gently prying up tray with screwdriver. Remove center console screws hidden under felt liner or storage compartment. Raise parking brake lever and remove center console. (Scheme 3)
  6. Remove screws and disconnect electrical connectors from PCM. Remove PCM from vehicle. Remove 2 screws and junction block No. 2 from driver's side of instrument panel. Disconnect all 3 control cables from heater case. Remove heater control panel with cables attached. Remove screws attaching ground wires to instrument panel center support braces. Unclip driver's and passenger's side "A" pillar covers and remove.
  7. Use small, flat-bladed screwdriver to remove dimmer/outside rearview mirror control switch assembly on driver's side of instrument panel and hazard/rear window defogger switch assembly in center of instrument panel. Disconnect ambient light sensor connectors. Remove ambient light sensor from top of instrument panel. Remove screws/nuts from underside of passenger's air bag. Disconnect electrical connector and remove air bag.
  8. Remove glove box reinforcements and striker bracket screw. Disconnect parking brake switch, brake transmission shift interlock solenoid (automatic transmission) and shift lock switch connectors. Disconnect oxygen sensor connect from passenger's side of shifter assembly. Disconnect daytime running light module connectors. Disconnect 8 junction block No. 2 connectors and 4 junction block No. 1 connectors. Disconnect 3 left kick panel connectors, 2 right instrument panel center support bracket connectors, and 3 connectors at left instrument panel center support bracket.
  9. Remove instrument panel wiring harness from all retainers. Remove screws retaining instrument panel carrier from cross-car beam. Disconnect wiring harness connectors from instrument panel as necessary. Disengage 5 clips from instrument panel carrier. Remove 2 screws attaching instrument panel to instrument panel reinforcement. Remove instrument panel carrier from vehicle. Remove cross-car beam and center support to remove heater case.
  10. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten passenger's air bag module nuts/bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-245-S02970634282000030800000). Activate air bag system and ensure system is functioning properly. See AIR BAG SYSTEM SAFETY article in GENERAL SERVICING.

Locate multifunction alarm module below dimmer/power mirror switch, on driver's side of instrument panel. Remove driver's side knee bolster and remove 2 screws securing junction block No. 2 to instrument panel. Move junction block aside far enough to access multifunction alarm module. Disconnect 2 multifunction alarm module connectors, and remove module from rear of junction block. To install, reverse removal procedure.
