Data Link Communications System: Overview Chevrolet Prizm I

WARNINGVehicles are equipped with air bag supplemental restraint system. Before attempting any repairs involving steering column, instrument panel or related components, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in appropriate AIR BAGS article.
CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See appropriate COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

The Brake Pressure Control Valve (BPMV) and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) are accessed through the White wire at Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 7. The Red wire at DLC terminal No. 16 provides voltage to the scan tool. The White/Black wire at DLC terminal No. 4 and the Brown wire at DLC terminal No. 5 provide ground to the scan tool.

The Data Link Connector (DLC) provides operating power for the scan tool at terminal No. 16 (battery positive voltage) and at terminal No. 4 (ground). The DLC provides the Class 2 serial data signals at terminal No. 7. The scan tool will power up with the ignition OFF. Many modules, however, will not communicate unless the DIM detects that the ignition is ON and sends the appropriate power mode message.
