Transaxle

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove 6 bolts and left splash shield from vehicle. Place appropriate size drain pan under transaxle fluid pan. Remove transaxle drain plug and drain fluid. Remove 18 bolts, transaxle fluid pan and pan gasket from transaxle. If fluid pan is frozen to transaxle case, use a rubber mallet and block of wood to lightly tap pan free. DO NOT pry fluid pan away from case with metal tools.
  2. Remove 3 bolts, and remove fluid filter screen and gasket from valve body. Thoroughly clean pan, magnets and screen with solvent, then dry using compressed air. Replace filter screen, if screen mesh is damaged. If large amounts of metal filings or other foreign material is deposited on magnets, disassembly and inspection of transaxle is required. Clean all gasket material from pan-to-case mounting surfaces. Discard old pan gasket.
  3. Assemble fluid filter screen and gasket on valve body and install 3 bolts. Install NEW fluid pan gasket and install fluid pan. Install 18 fluid pan bolts. Install drain plug. Remove drain pan, and install splash shield with 6 bolts. Tighten all fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-1443-S02412789692000031300000) . Lower vehicle.
  4. Refill transaxle. Start engine with gearshift lever in Park and parking brake applied. Check fluid level. See «CHECKING FLUID LEVEL»(ref-1443-S19708479312000031300000) . Add appropriate fluid as necessary. See «RECOMMENDED FLUID»(ref-1443-S17955975032000031300000) . DO NOT overfill.

3-Speed Transaxle Differential

Raise and support vehicle. Remove 6 bolts and left splash shield from vehicle. Place appropriate size drain pan under differential drain plug. Remove differential drain plug and drain fluid. Install and tighten differential drain plug. Remove differential fill plug and fill until fluid is 0-0.2" (0-5 mm) from top of fill hole. Install fill plug. Remove drain pan, and install splash shield with 6 bolts. Tighten all fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Lower vehicle.

PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION (PNP) SWITCH

Note. PNP switch may also be known as Transaxle Range (TR) sensor or neutral safety switch. Adjust switch so engine starts with transaxle in Park or Neutral only.

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove engine under cover. Place gearshift lever in Neutral. Ensure transaxle shift lever is in Neutral detent. Loosen PNP switch mounting bolts. Rotate PNP switch so neutral basic line scribed on PNP switch aligns with groove in PNP switch sleeve. (Scheme 44)
  2. Hold shift lever and tighten mounting bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-1443-S02412789692000031300000). Install engine under cover. Lower vehicle. Set parking brake, block drive wheels and ensure starter operates with transaxle in Park and Neutral only.

SHIFT CABLE

WARNINGAdjust shift cable so engine will start with transaxle in Park or Neutral only. Misadjusted shift linkage could cause clutch and/or band failure in transaxle.

Note. Most FWD vehicles are equipped with a self-adjusting shift cable.

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove engine under cover. Place gearshift lever in Neutral. Loosen control shaft lever nut. Push control shaft lever fully toward right side of vehicle. Rotate lever 2 notches toward Neutral position. Set shift lever to Neutral. (Scheme 45)
  2. While holding shift lever lightly toward Reverse position, tighten nut. Reinstall undercover. Lower vehicle. Ensure transaxle operates in all gear positions. Ensure vehicle will not move with ignition switch in LOCK position, and transaxle gearshift lever in Park. Ensure correct operation in other gearshift positions.

SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEM

Note. See appropriate SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEM article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.

3-Speed Transaxle

Ensure throttle valve is at wide open throttle. Loosen lock nut. Adjust T.V. cable housing so distance between end of outer cable boot and cable stopper is 0-0.04" (0-1.0 mm) by turning adjusting nut. (Scheme 46) Tighten adjusting nut and lock nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.

4-Speed Transaxle

Ensure throttle valve is fully closed. Loosen lock nut. Adjust T.V. cable housing so distance between end of outer cable boot and cable stopper is 0-0.04" (0-1.0 mm) by turning adjusting nut. (Scheme 47) Tighten adjusting nut and lock nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
