- Raise vehicle and drain crankcase. Remove exhaust crossover pipe from manifold and converter. Remove starter and flywheel access cover. Remove engine mount through bolts. Remove oil pan bolts and lower pan.
- Position front crankshaft throw and/or counterweight horizontally to facilitate pan removal. Raise engine, loosely reinstall through bolts and remove oil pan.
3.8L (231") V6
Raise vehicle and drain crankcase. Remove flywheel access cover. Remove exhaust crossover pipe. Raise engine using Engine Support (BT-6501). Remove oil pan bolts and remove pan.
Impala
- Disconnect negative battery cable and remove air cleaner and fan shroud. On Impala and Caprice models, only remove upper half of shroud. Raise vehicle and drain crankcase. Remove cruise control servo bracket, if equipped.
- Remove A.I.R. hose-to-converter pipe. Remove A.I.R. pipe-to-exhaust manifold. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe at manifold and converter. Remove starter and flywheel access cover. Disconnect transmission lines at oil pan. Remove engine mount through bolts.
- Remove oil pan bolts and lower pan. Position front crankshaft throw and/or counterweight on horizontal plane so it does not interfere with oil pan removal. Raise engine, reinstall through bolts and remove oil pan.
Scheme 22
- Position steering gear stub-shaft clamp bolt upward and remove clamp bolt. Disconnect intermediate shaft from stub shaft. CAUTION: Failure to disconnect intermediate shaft from stub shaft may result in damage to steering gear and /or intermediate shaft. Damage to these parts can cause loss of steering.
- Install Engine Support (J-28467). Securing it to strut attaching bolts with 3 nuts per side and rubber support pad resting on radiator support. (Scheme 22) (Scheme 22): Engine Support Fixture Tighten bracket-to-cylinder block is nut 65 ft. lbs. (88 N.m). WARNING: To avoid risk of personal injury, proper installation of engine support is required.
- Raise vehicle with rear slightly lower than front and install support stands at forward lift points. Drain crankcase. Remove left side steering gear-to-cradle bolts and loosen right side steering gear-to-cradle bolts. Remove front stabilizer bar.
- Using a 1/2" drill bit, drill through spot weld located between rear holes at left front stabilizer bar mounting point. Remove cradle mount nuts from engine and transaxle. Disconnect lower left ball joint from knuckle and discard ball joint-to-knuckle bolt.
- With block of wood between transaxle pan and jack, raise transaxle until mount studs clear cradle. Remove bolts attaching front crossmember to right side of cradle. Remove bolts from left side body mounts.
