Symptoms - Secondary and Configurable Customer Controls
| IMPORTANT | Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle before using the Symptom Tables in order to verify that all of the following conditions are true: There are no DTCs set. The control modules can communicate via the serial data link. Review the system operation in order to familiarize yourself with the system functions. Refer to Steering Wheel Controls Description and Operation . |
Visual/Physical Inspection
- Inspect for aftermarket devices which may affect the operation of the Steering Wheel Controls System. Refer to «Checking Aftermarket Accessories»(/chevrolet/malibu/vii-2008-2012/remont/body-electrical/#wiring-systems-and-power-management-diagnostic-information-and-procedures__checking-aftermarket-accessories) .
- Inspect for easily accessible or visible system components for obvious damage or conditions which may cause the symptom.
Intermittent
Faulty electrical connections or wiring may be the cause of intermittent conditions. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections .
Symptom List
Refer to Steering Wheel Controls Malfunction (3-Spoke) in order to diagnose the symptom.
Diagnostic Instructions

Circuit/System Description
The radio supplies voltage to the audio steering wheel control switches and monitors the return signal. Each switch state is associated to a set resistance value and when pressed a specific voltage drop occurs across the resistor unique to the switch. The radio identifies the switch selection and activates the feature.

Circuit/System Verification
Ensure the primary controls of the associated component are functioning properly.
Circuit/System Testing
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the right steering wheel control switch.
- Ignition ON, radio ON, test for 9.0-11.0 volts between the voltage reference circuit terminal 2 and ground. If greater than the specified range, test the voltage reference circuit for a short to B+. If the circuit tests normal, replace the radio. If less than the specified range, test the voltage reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the radio.
- Test for greater than 9.0 volts between the voltage reference circuit terminal 2 and the signal circuit terminal 4. If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the radio.
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the X2 harness connector at the radio.
- Test for infinite resistance between the signal circuit terminal 4 and ground. If less than the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to ground.
- If all circuits test normal, test or replace the right steering wheel control switch.
Component Testing
- Disconnect the harness connector at the right steering wheel control switch.
- Connect a DMM between terminals 2 and 4 of the right steering wheel control switch. If any of the resistance measurements for the individual switches are not within the specified resistance values, replace the right steering wheel control switch.

Steering Wheel Controls Description and Operation
The audio steering wheel control switches duplicate the function of the primary controls of the associated component, through a network of multiple momentary contact switches and a series of resistors. The radio supplies voltage to the switches and monitors the return signal for a specific voltage drop to occur unique to the one pressed. The radio then identifies the switch selected to activate the feature, otherwise sends a serial data message that is received by the component controlled, activating the feature.
This section is intended to diagnosis the circuits between the radio and the audio steering wheel control switches. If the primary control for the device is inoperative, refer to the appropriate section for the component the steering wheel control switch is functioning.
