Body Control Module Programming and Setup

A new body control module (BCM) must be programmed with the proper regular production option (RPO) configurations. The BCM stores the information regarding the vehicle options and if the BCM is not properly configured with the correct RPO codes the BCM will not control all of the features properly. The Tech 2 software will automatically prompt you with the various RPOs available for the vehicle. Ensure that the following conditions exist in order to prepare for BCM programming

  1. This entire procedure has been reviewed before starting
  2. The battery is fully charged.
  3. A CANdi module is installed between the vehicle and the scan tool.
  4. The ignition switch is in the ON position.
  5. The data link connector (DLC) is accessible.
  6. All disconnected modules and devices are reconnected before programming.

BCM Programming

IMPORTANTUse extreme care when verifying both the VIN and Odometer reading that is set in the service BCM. Once the VIN and Odometer are set in the replacement BCM it is impossible to change them, and if there is a mismatch, the part will be rendered useless.

To setup a new replacement BCM select Vehicle Control Systems, then select the applicable options, then select Module Setup, then select Body Control Module on the scan tool. If the scan tool can communicate with the BCM that is being replaced, select BCM Copy and Flash. If the scan tool is unable to communicate with the BCM that is being replaced, select BCM Setup. After the setup procedure it is necessary to perform the Remote Start setup procedure and brake pedal position (BPP) Sensor Calibration procedure. Refer to the Importants below for further information.

If the BCM fails to accept the program, perform the following steps

  1. Inspect all BCM connections.
  2. Verify that the scan tool has the latest software version.

Remote Start Calibration, (if equipped)

In order to setup the remote start feature a Techline Terminal using the Pass-Thru routine must be used. With the scan tool powered down, attach it to the vehicle then connect the Techline Terminal's RS-232 cable to the scan tool. Select Service Programming System from the Techline Terminal main screen. Select the Pass-Thru procedure from the Techline Terminal's menu selections and follow all on-screen directions. Ensure the correct programming procedure is selected based on the component being replaced or programmed. Configure the remote start feature to match the original RPO content on the vehicle.

BPP Sensor Calibration

IMPORTANTIf the BCM or the brake apply sensing system (BAS) sensor is replaced, a BPP sensor calibration must be performed.

Perform the BPP Sensor Calibration using a scan tool.

SDM Part Number Learn Procedure

If the SDM is replaced the SDM part number must be learned by the BCM. Using a scan tool navigate to Vehicle Control Systems, Module Setup, Supplemental Inflatable Restraints then select Setup SDM Part Number In BCM. Follow the on screen directions.

IMPORTANTAfter programming, perform the following to avoid future misdiagnosis
  1. Turn the ignition OFF for 10 seconds.
  2. Connect the scan tool to the data link connector.
  3. Turn the ignition ON with the engine OFF.
  4. Use the scan tool in order to retrieve history DTCs from all modules.
  5. Clear all history DTCs.

Communication Interface Module Programming and Setup

Each of the following service procedures require programming or setup procedures to be performed on the communication interface module.

Communication Interface Module Replacement

Note. It is critical to use the service replacement Communication Interface Module (CIM) only in the vehicle for which it was ordered. Failure to perform the following procedures will result in a red LED, DTC(s) being set, and limited or incomplete OnStar® services An OnStar® button-press to the OnStar® call center is not required to complete the procedure. It may take up to 24 hours for OnStar® service to become fully activated after performing the procedures. Perform the following procedure only once. Repeat attempts of the procedure may result in a delay of the activation process. To fully activate an OnStar® module, both the setup and activation request procedures must be completed on all vehicles with AND without an active OnStar® subscription to insure the unit has been setup properly for the vehicle it has been installed into and also to update the OnStar® with the correct unit information. To initialize the Turn-by-Turn feature, the vehicle must first be driven 8-16 km (5-10 miles) in order to allow the system to self-calibrate the dead reckoning feature. Use of a J 2534-compatible diagnostic tool interface is required when performing the SPS supported OnStar® Setup and Activation (ONSU) procedure. On vehicles up-fitted with TTY capabilities, it is necessary to perform a power cycle of the OnStar® Interface Module (OTIM), and toggle the TTY mode after completing the CIM installation and setup procedures.

  1. Connect the scan tool to the vehicle.
  2. Connect the Techline Information System (TIS) terminal to the scan tool.
  3. Select the OnStar® Setup and Activation (ONSU) option using the service programming system (SPS).
  4. The default language for the new CIM is English. To change the language to French or Spanish, access the scan tool.
  5. Inform the customer that it may take up to 24 hours for the OnStar® service to become fully activated.

Control Solenoid Valve and Transmission Control Module Assembly Programming and Setup (6T70/6T75)

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event be performed for a complete repair. The transmission control module (TCM) is part of the control solenoid (w/body and TCM) valve assembly, and is not serviced separately.

Transmission Control Module (TCM) Replacement

If the TCM is replaced, the following procedures must be performed

  1. TCM Reprogramming

TCM Reprogramming

  2. Perform the Service Fast Learn Adapts - Refer to «Service Fast Learn Adapts»(/chevrolet/malibu/vii-2008-2012/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transaxle-6t706t75-symptom-troubleshooting-and-diagnosis__service-fast-learn-adapts) .
  1. Turn the ignition OFF for 30 seconds.
  2. Turn the ignition ON with the engine OFF.
  3. Use the scan tool in order to retrieve history DTCs from all modules.
  4. Clear all history DTCs.

Setup for Component Replacement

The replacement of some components will require a setup procedure for complete repair.

If any of the following components are replaced, the Service Fast Learn Adapts procedure must be performed

  1. Transmission replacement
  2. Any internal transmission repair
  3. Any speed sensor

Digital Radio Receiver Programming and Setup

Each of the following service procedures requires programming or setup procedures to be performed on the digital radio receiver.

XM™ Activation

IMPORTANTAfter replacement of an XM™ receiver, call XM™ radio to deactivate the receiver that has been removed from the vehicle. The vehicle must be parked in view of a satellite within 24 hours after an activation call.
  1. Radio ON, tune to the XM™ channel 0 and record the radio ID. The radio ID will be required for activation of the new receiver.
  2. Call XM™ radio to deactivate the faulty receiver and activate the new receiver. US: 1-800-556-3600 Canada: 1-877-438-9677
  3. Park the vehicle outside in an area with an unobstructed view of the southern sky.
  4. Leave the vehicle outside with the ignition switch in the ACC position and the radio ON, tune to the XM™ channel 1 for 30 minutes to activate XM™ service.
  5. Once activated, the radio will receive the remaining XM™ channels.

EBCM Replacement

If the electronic brake control module (EBCM) is replaced it must be programmed. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

EBCM Reprogramming

If the EBCM needs to be reprogrammed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Engine Control Module Programming and Setup

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event be performed for a complete repair.

ECM Replacement

If the engine control module (ECM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed

  1. ECM Reprogramming-Refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(/chevrolet/malibu/vii-2008-2012/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems) .
  2.   4. Engine Oil Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Engine Oil Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was replaced.
  5. Transmission Fluid Life Remaining-When available, use the scan tool to reset the Transmission Fluid Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was replaced.
  6. Theft Deterrent-Refer to «Theft Deterrent Module Programming and Setup (N. America except Canada)»(/chevrolet/malibu/vii-2008-2012/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems__theft-deterrent-module-programming-and-setup) or «Theft Deterrent Module Programming and Setup (Canada)»(/chevrolet/malibu/vii-2008-2012/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems__theft-deterrent-module-programming-and-setup) .

ECM Reprogramming

  1. If the ECM needs to be reprogrammed, refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(/chevrolet/malibu/vii-2008-2012/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems) .
  2. Engine Oil Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Engine Oil Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.
  3. Turn the ignition OFF for 30 seconds.
  4. Turn the ignition ON with the engine OFF.
  5. Use the scan tool in order to retrieve history DTCs from all modules.
  6. Clear all history DTCs.

The replacement of some components will require a setup procedure for complete repair.

If any of the following components are replaced, the CKP Variation Learn Procedure must be performed

  1. Engine replacement
  2. Any engine repair that disturbs the CKP sensor or its relationship with the crankshaft reluctor wheel
  3. CKP sensor

If the throttle body is replaced or a throttle body cleaning procedure is completed, the Throttle/Idle Learn Procedure must be performed. Refer to Throttle/Idle Learn for the 2.4L, Throttle/Idle Learn for the 3.5L, or Throttle/Idle Learn for the 3.6L.

Generator Battery Disconnect Control Module Programming and Setup

If the generator battery disconnect control module is replaced or has to be reprogrammed, it must be programmed using the service programming system (SPS). Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Generator Control Module Programming and Setup

If the generator control module/starter generator control module (SGCM) is replaced or has to be reprogrammed, it must be programmed using the service programming system (SPS). Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Heated Seat Control Module Programming and Setup

This device requires no programming or setup.

HVAC Control Module Replacement

This device requires no programming.

Actuator Replacement

If an actuator is replaced, the following procedure must be performed

Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) Replacement and Reprogramming

If the SDM is replaced or requires reprogramming, the following procedures must be performed in the specified order

  1. Setup SDM- Using a scan tool, go to Vehicle Control Systems » Computer/Integrating Systems » Module Setup » Supplemental Inflatable Restraint. Select Setup New SDM and follow the on-screen instructions.
  2. Setup SDM Part Number in BCM - Using a scan tool, go to Vehicle Control Systems » Computer/Integrating Systems » Module Setup » Supplemental Inflatable Restraint. Select Setup SDM Part Number in BCM and follow the on-screen instructions.

Compass Calibration and Variance Procedures

When the inside rearview mirror with compass is replaced, the compass must be setup utilizing the Compass Calibration and Magnetic Variance .

Instrument Cluster Programming and Setup

This device requires no programming or setup.

Passenger Presence System Programming and Setup

Note. Before the passenger presence system (PPS) can be checked for preloads the front passenger seat must be completely empty of all items. The presence of any items on the front passenger seat will affect the calibration and operation of the PPS. When the preload test is perform, the instrument panel cluster (IPC) and dash lights will begin illuminating at varying intensity. This is normal operation during the preload test procedure and does not indicate additional system faults.

If the PPS is replaced or serviced, perform the preload test procedure for the PPS. Refer to Passenger Presence System Preload Test (PPS Setup) for the preload test procedure.

Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) Setup

After replacing the power steering motor and module assembly the following 3 procedures must be performed. After replacing the steering column assembly only the steering position sensor and the torque sensor calibration procedures must be performed. The steering position sensor and torque sensor calibration procedures should also be performed after a suspension alignment. Certain steering symptoms can be corrected by performing the steering position sensor and torque sensor calibration procedures such as

  1. Poor, or uneven return to center
  2. Poor, or uneven on center feel

Steering Position Sensor Calibration

  1. Install the scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. Center the steering wheel.
  4. With the scan tool select Module Setup.
  5. Select Steering Position Sensor Calibration and press the Enter key. The scan tool screen will flash Calibration in Progress then display Calibration Complete.
  6. Press the exit key.
  7. Use the scan tool in order to clear any EPS DTCs.
  8. Turn OFF the ignition.

Torque Sensor Calibration

  1. Install the scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. Center the steering wheel.
  4. With the scan tool select Module Setup.
  5. Select Torque Sensor Calibration and press the Enter key. The scan tool screen will flash Calibration in Progress, then display Calibration Complete.
  6. Press the exit key
  7. Use the scan tool in order to clear any EPS DTCs
  8. Turn OFF the ignition.

Steering Tuning Selection

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. With the scan tool select Module Setup.
  4. Select Steering Tuning Selection and press the enter key. The scan tool screen will flash Selection in Progress, then display Selection Complete.
  5. Press the exit key.
  6. Use the scan tool in order to clear any EPS DTCs.
  7. Turn OFF the ignition.

Radio Programming and Setup

Each of the following service procedures require programming or setup procedures to be performed on the radio.

Radio Replacement

IMPORTANTThe radio setup files will configure the radio amplifier (if equipped), internal equalization settings, and program the vehicle identification number (VIN). Without the following setup procedure, the sound quality and volume of the radio may be degraded.

For uplevel radios, setup is completed using the Service Programming System (SPS). Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

For the base radio, use the program VIN procedure available in Special Functions menu of the scan tool. After programming the VIN cycle the ignition key with the retained accessory power (RAP) disabled.

Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Programming and Setup (without Accessory 2 Way Remote)

IMPORTANTWhen replacing the remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR), the tire pressure monitoring (TPM) information can be learned to the new RCDLR in one of two ways. These two methods are reflected in the selections below. Only choose one of the methods; it is not required to do both methods when replacing the RCDLR. If you choose to perform the Copy and Paste TPM Information procedure, Step 1 must be performed BEFORE removing the old RCDLR. This procedure requires that specific TPM information be extracted from the old RCDLR prior to its removal.

Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Replacement-Copy and Paste TPM Information

This procedure will learn the TPM information to the new RCDLR using the Copy and Paste function on the scan tool. The procedure will extract the TPM Tire Type information as well as the sensor data from the existing RCDLR prior to its replacement and store this information in the scan tool. After RCDLR replacement, the tire type and sensor data stored in the scan tool is written to the new RCDLR, negating the need to perform the tire type setup and sensor learn procedure.

This procedure should be considered as the first programming choice when replacing an RCDLR. The Copy and Paste procedure eliminates the possibility of incorrectly inputting the tire type or learning stray TPM sensors.

  1. Using a scan tool, navigate to the Copy and Paste TPM Information procedure and copy the existing TPM information from the RCDLR using the outline below. Follow the on-screen instructions after selecting Step 1: Vehicle Control Systems Module Setup Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Copy and Paste TPM Information Step 1
  2. At this point, install the new RCDLR.
  3. Using a scan tool, navigate to the Copy and Paste TPM Information procedure to paste the stored TPM information using the outline below. Follow the on-screen instructions after selecting Step 2: Vehicle Control Systems Module Setup Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Copy and Paste TPM Information Step 2

Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Replacement-TPM Sensor Learn

This procedure will learn TPM information to the new RCDLR by manually inputting the tire type using the scan tool and performing the TPM sensor learn. This procedure should be performed if the above Copy and Paste procedure can not be completed. An example of this would be an RCDLR that is unable to communicate with the scan tool and is required to be replaced.

  1. Program the keyless entry transmitters. Refer to «Remote Control Door Lock Transmitter Programming»(/chevrolet/malibu/vii-2008-2012/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#keyless-entry-system-and-remote-functions__remote-control-door-lock-transmitter-programming) .
  2. Setup the new RCDLR: Select Remote Control Door Lock Receiver under Module Setup in the scan tool Vehicle Control System menu. Select Setup New RCDLR. Follow the on-sceen instructions.
  3. Tire Type Setup: Install a scan tool. Select Remote Control Door Lock Receiver under Module Setup in the Vehicle Control System menu. Select Tire Type/Pressure Selection. Follow the on-sceen instructions.
  4. Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensor Learn-Refer to «Tire Pressure Indicator Sensor Learn»(/chevrolet/malibu/vii-2008-2012/remont/warning-system/#tire-pressure-monitoring-system) .

Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Programming and Setup (with Accessory 2 Way Remote)

IMPORTANTWhen replacing the remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR), the tire pressure monitoring (TPM) information can be learned to the new RCDLR in one of two ways. These two methods are reflected in the selections below. Only choose one of the methods; it is not required to do both methods when replacing the RCDLR. If you choose to perform the Copy and Paste TPM Information procedure, Step 1 must be performed BEFORE removing the old RCDLR. This procedure requires that specific TPM information be extracted from the old RCDLR prior to its removal.

This procedure will learn the TPM information to the new RCDLR using the Copy and Paste function on the scan tool. This procedure will extract the TPM Tire Type information as well as the sensor data from the existing RCDLR prior to its replacement and store this information in the scan tool. After RCDLR replacement and SPS programming, the tire type and sensor data stored in the scan tool is written to the new RCDLR, negating the need to perform the tire type setup and sensor learn procedure.

This procedure should be considered as the first programming choice when replacing an RCDLR. The Copy and Paste procedure eliminates the possibility of incorrectly inputting the tire type or learning stray TPM sensors.

  1. Using a scan tool, navigate to the Copy and Paste TPM Information procedure and copy the existing TPM information from the RCDLR using the outline below. Follow the on-screen instructions after selecting Step 1: Vehicle Control Systems Module Setup Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Copy and Paste TPM Information Step 1
  2. At this point, install the new RCDLR.

  4. Using a scan tool, navigate to the Copy and Paste TPM Information procedure to paste the stored TPM information using the outline below. EL-49642: SPS Programming Support Tool

For step-by-step control module programming instructions, please refer to the techline information system (TIS) terminal.

Review the information below to ensure proper programming protocol.

Note. DO NOT program a control module unless you are directed by a service procedure or you are directed by a General Motors service bulletin. Programming a control module at any other time will not permanently correct a customers concern. It is essential that the TIS terminal, MDI, and/or Scan Tool, is equipped with the latest software before performing service programming. Due to the time requirements of programming a controller, install EL-49642 SPS Programming Support Tool to maintain system voltage. See Special Tools . Stable battery voltage is critical during programming. Any fluctuation, spiking, over voltage or loss of voltage will interrupt programming. If the above tool is not available, DO NOT connect a battery charger, connect a fully charged 12V jumper or booster pack disconnected from the AC voltage supply. Some modules will require additional programming/setup events to be performed before or after programming. Some vehicles may require the use of a CANDi or MDI module for programming. Review the appropriate service information for these procedures. DTCs may set during programming. Clear DTCs after programming is complete. Clearing powertrain DTCs will set the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) system status indicators to NO.

Ensure the following conditions are met before programming a control module

  1. Vehicle system voltage: There is not a charging system concern. All charging system concerns must be repaired before programming a control module. Battery voltage is greater than 12 volts but less than 16 volts. The battery must be fully charged before programming the control module. Turn OFF or disable any system that may put a load on the vehicles battery, such as the following components: Interior lights Exterior lights including daytime running lights (DRL)-Applying the parking brake, on most vehicles, disables the DRL system Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems Engine cooling fans Radio, etc.
  2. The ignition switch must be in the proper position. SPS prompts you to turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. DO NOT change the position of the ignition switch during the programming procedure, unless instructed to do so.
  3. Make certain all tool connections are secure, including the following components and circuits: Scan Tool The RS-232 communication cable port The connection at the data link connector (DLC) The voltage supply circuits MDI The USB, Ethernet or Wireless communication port The connection at the data link connector (DLC)
  4. DO NOT disturb the tool harnesses while programming. If an interruption occurs during the programming procedure, programming failure or control module damage may occur.

In the event of an interrupted or unsuccessful programming event, perform the following steps

  1. DO NOT turn the ignition OFF. Ensure that all control module and DLC connections are secure and the TIS terminal operating software is up to date.
  2. Attempt to reprogram the control module.
  3. If the control module can still not be programmed, turn the ignition OFF for at least one minute.
  4. Turn the ignition ON and attempt to reprogram the control module. The control module should program. If the control module still cannot be programmed, replace the control module.

After successfully programming the control module, ensure that all post programming procedures are performed; refer to Control Module References for the appropriate control module Programming and Setup document for any required procedures.

Sunroof Control Module Programming and Setup

When replacing the sunroof motor/control module, the sunroof motor/actuator initialization/teach procedure must be followed. Refer to Sunroof Motor/Actuator Initialization/Teach Process (Existing Motor) or Sunroof Motor/Actuator Initialization/Teach Process (New Motor) before starting the repair procedure.

Theft Deterrent Module Programming and Setup (N. America except Canada)

Because of how vehicle key information and theft deterrent passwords are stored within the theft deterrent module (TDM), the Set Up a New Theft Deterrent Module (TDM) Using Existing Keys procedure must be performed prior to the removal and replacement of the TDM if the vehicle keys are being reused. If the scan tool is unable to communicate with the TDM or is otherwise unable to extract this information from the TDM, the vehicle keys must be replaced.

Theft Deterrent Module Replacement Using Existing Keys

Note. Use this procedure only if replacing the theft deterrent module (TDM) using the existing vehicle keys. Make sure to have all keys available during this procedure. DO NOT REPLACE THE TDM MODULE As The SPS Screen States. The SPS screen that states Replace Controller is incorrect. This SPS procedure is used to unlock the existing TDM module so that key information can be extracted with the scan tool before replacement. This procedure must be performed prior to the removal and replacement of the TDM if the vehicle keys are being reused. Performing the setup procedure first allows the scan tool to extract the key information and passwords from the old TDM prior to its removal. Failure to perform this step will result in the failure to learn the existing vehicle keys and new vehicle keys will be required when replacing the TDM. Do not use the scan tool for any other programming operations while performing this procedure. Doing so will erase the stored data retrieved from the original TDM and cause the set-up to fail.

  1. Connect a scan tool to the vehicle in the pass-thru arrangement.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. Ensure that all power consuming devices are turned OFF on the vehicle.
  4. On the Techline Terminal, select Service Programming System and follow the Techline Terminal on-screen instructions, using the Legacy Pass-Thru method. Ensure the correct programming selection is chosen based on component being replaced or programmed. For this procedure, go to the V.T.D. Vehicle Theft Deterrent Learn menu and choose the Prepare Module For TDM Setup Procedure selection.
  5. At this point the scan tool must remain connected for the duration of the 10 minute relearn procedure.
  6. Observe the SPS screen, after approximately 10 minutes, the SPS screen will display Programming Complete.
  7. With the scan tool, select Theft Deterrent Module in the Vehicle Control Systems Module Setup data list.
  8. Select Step 1.
  9. Select Use Existing Keys.
  10. The scan tool will then display Replace Module Per Service Manual. At this time, replace the TDM.
  11. After the new TDM has been installed, using the scan tool, select Step 2.
  12. Navigate to key data on scan tool to show how many keys are learned - should be zero at this point
  13. Remove key from ignition, re-insert key, turn key to run (observe on scan tool that keys learned is 1) Make sure to have all keys available during the learn procedure.
  14. Repeat step 12 for all other keys (must be completed within 10 seconds after turning ignition off for each key). Now existing keys will be learned (observed on scan tool the number of keys learned increments for each key). If addition keys are not learned (10 second timer between cycling ignition off/on expired), then use the add key procedure.
  15. If the first key is not able to be learned, then re-install old module. If the old module was removed before getting key information and password using the scan tool, the first key will not be learned. Re-install the old module for data extraction and do not replace module while performing the SPS procedure. The SPS screen that states Replace Controller is incorrect.

Theft Deterrent Module Replacement Using New Keys

Note. Use this procedure only if replacing the TDM using new vehicle keys. The TDM must be replaced prior to beginning this procedure.

  1. Connect a scan tool to the vehicle.
  2. With a new, unlearned, vehicle key, turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. With a scan tool, select Theft Deterrent Module in the Vehicle Control Systems Module Setup data list.
  4. Select Step 1.
  5. Select Use New Keys.
  6. Navigate to key data on scan tool to show how many keys are learned - should be zero at this point
  7. Remove key from ignition, re-insert key, turn key to run (observe on scan tool that keys learned is 1) Make sure to have all keys available during the learn procedure.
  8. Repeat step 7 for all other keys (must be completed within 10 seconds after turning ignition off for each key). Now existing keys will be learned (observed on scan tool the number of keys learned increments for each key). If addition keys are not learned (10 second timer between cycling ignition off/on expired), then use the add key procedure.
  9. Perform 30 minute or 10 minute learn for the ECM to learn the new fuel continue password.

Without SPS Tool (30 minute Learn)

This 30 minute relearn procedure will relearn the fuel continue password between the theft deterrent module (TDM) and the engine control module (ECM).

Use this procedure after replacing any of the following components

  1. The theft deterrent module (TDM)
  2. The powertrain control module (PCM)

Note. This procedure is not available on vehicles equipped with EXPORT configured TDMs. When performing the 30-minute relearn procedure, all previously learned keys will be erased from the TDM memory. Additional keys may be learned after performing the relearn procedure. When replacing a TDM with a GM SPO Replacement Part, ensure the procedure to setup a new TDM is performed prior to the 30-Minute Relearn Procedure.

  1. With a new, unlearned, vehicle key, turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Observe the security indicator. After approximately 10 minutes, the telltale will turn OFF.
  3. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 two more times for a total of 3 cycles or 30 minutes.
  5. Start the vehicle. The ECM has learned the fuel continue password.
  6. If additional keys are required to be learned, refer to «Adding Keys»(/chevrolet/malibu/vii-2008-2012/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#immobilizer-system__adding-keys) .
  7. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs.

With SPS Tool (10 Minute Learn)

This 10 minute relearn procedure will relearn the fuel continue password between the theft deterrent module (TDM) and the engine control module (ECM).

  1. Navigate to key data on scan tool to show how many keys are learned - should be zero at this point
  2. Remove key from ignition, re-insert key, turn key to run (observe on scan tool that keys learned is 1). Make sure to have all keys available during the learn procedure.
  3. Repeat step 2 for all other keys (must be completed within 10 seconds after turning ignition off for each key)/now existing keys will be learned (observed on scan tool the number of keys learned increments for each key). If addition keys are not learned (10 second timer between cycling ignition off/on expired), then use the add key procedure.
  4. Connect a scan tool to the vehicle in the pass-thru arrangement.
  5. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  6. Ensure that all power consuming devices are turned OFF on the vehicle.
  7. On the Techline Terminal, select Service Programming System and follow the Techline Terminal on-screen instructions, using the Legacy Pass-Thru method. Ensure the correct programming selection is chosen based on component being replaced or programmed. For this procedure, go to the V.T.D. Vehicle Theft Deterrent Learn menu and choose the Vehicle Theft Deterrent Learn for Powertrain System selection. Ensure the correct Vehicle Theft Deterrent Learn for Powertrain System selection is chosen based on the engine RPO of the vehicle being programmed.
  8. At this point the scan tool must remain connected for the duration of the 10 minute relearn procedure.
  9. Observe the scan tool, after approximately 10 minutes the scan tool will display Programming Successful, Turn OFF Ignition and wait 2 minutes. The vehicle is now ready to relearn the key information and/or the passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK.
  10. With a master vehicle key, turn the ignition to the RUN position for 15 seconds, then start the vehicle. The TDM and ECM have now relearned the fuel continue password.
  11. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs.

Theft Deterrent Module Programming and Setup (Canada)

Because of how vehicle key information and theft deterrent passwords are stored within the theft deterrent module (TDM), the Set Up a New Theft Deterrent Module (TDM) Using Existing Keys procedure must be performed prior to the removal and replacement of the TDM if the vehicle keys are being reused. If the scan tool is unable to communicate with the TDM or is otherwise unable to extract this information from the TDM, the vehicle keys must be replaced.

Failure to perform this step will result in the failure to learn the existing vehicle keys and new vehicle keys will be required when replacing the TDM. Do not use the scan tool for any other programming operations while performing this procedure. Doing so will erase the stored data retrieved from the original TDM and cause the set-up to fail.

  1. Connect a scan tool to the vehicle in the pass-thru arrangement.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.

Note. Use this procedure only if replacing the TDM using new vehicle keys. The TDM must be replaced prior to beginning this procedure.

  1. Connect a scan tool to the vehicle.

If addition keys are not learned (10 second timer between cycling ignition "off/on" expired), then use add key procedure.
  9. Perform 10 minute learn for the ECM to learn the new fuel continue password.

This 10-minute relearn procedure will relearn the fuel continue password between the theft deterrent module (TDM) and the engine control module (ECM).

  1. Navigate to key data on scan tool to show how many keys are learned - should be zero at this point
  2. Remove key from ignition, re-insert key, turn key to run (observe on scan tool that keys learned is 1). Make sure to have all keys available during the learn procedure.
  3. Repeat step 2 for all other keys (must be completed within 10 seconds after turning ignition off for each key). Now existing keys will be learned (observed on scan tool the number of keys learned increments for each key). If additional keys are not learned (10 second timer between cycling ignition off/on expired), then use the add key procedure.
  4. Connect a scan tool to the vehicle in the pass-thru arrangement.
  5. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  6. Ensure that all power consuming devices are turned OFF on the vehicle.

  9. Observe the scan tool, after approximately 10 minutes the scan tool will display Programming Successful, Turn OFF Ignition and wait 2 minutes. The vehicle is now ready to relearn the key information and/or the passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK.
  10. With a master vehicle key, turn the ignition to the RUN position for 15 seconds, then start the vehicle. The TDM and ECM have now relearned the fuel continue password.
  11. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs.

Transmission Control Module Programming and Setup

  1. The transmission control module (TCM) must be programmed with the proper software/calibrations. Ensure that the following conditions exist in order to prepare for TCM programming: The battery is fully charged. The ignition switch is in the RUN position. The Techline equipment cable connection at the data link connector (DLC) is secure.
  2. Program the TCM using the latest software matching the vehicle. Refer to up-to-date Techline equipment user instructions.
  3. If the TCM fails to program, proceed as follows: Ensure that the TCM connection is OK. Inspect the Techline equipment for the latest software version. Attempt to program the TCM. If the TCM still cannot be programmed properly, replace the TCM.
