DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

WARNINGVehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicle, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior and exterior of vehicle, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

INTRODUCTION

The automatic transmission shift lock control is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of Park when the ignition switch is ON. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the Park position. The system consists of the following components

  1. The automatic transmission (A/T) shift lock control actuator (also known as "A/T shift lock control solenoid").
  2. The automatic transmission (A/T) shift lock control switch (stoplamp switch).
  3. The Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch.

With the ignition switch in the ON position, battery voltage is supplied to the PNP switch. With the transmission in the Park position, the contacts in the PNP switch are closed. This allows current to flow through the switch to the stoplamp switch. The circuit continues through the normally-closed switch to the A/T shift lock control actuator. The A/T shift lock control actuator is permanently grounded. This energizes the A/T shift lock control actuator, mechanically locking the shift linkage in the Park position. When the driver presses the brake pedal the contacts in the stoplamp switch open, de-energizing the A/T shift lock control actuator. This allows the shift lever to move from the Park position.

SHIFT INTERLOCK SOLENOID

Gearshift lever cannot be moved from Park position without simultaneously applying brake pedal with ignition switch turned to ON position. When brake pedal is applied, stoplamp switch interrupts circuit to A/T shift lock actuator, de-energizing A/T shift lock actuator, which unlocks gearshift lever from Park position. DIAGNOSTIC STARTING POINT

Begin the system diagnosis by reviewing DESCRIPTION & OPERATION . Reviewing the description and operation information will help you determine the correct symptom diagnostic procedure when a malfunction exists. Reviewing the description and operation information will also help you determine if the condition described by the customer is normal operation. See SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS in order to identify the correct procedure for diagnosing the system and where the procedure is located.

Visual/Physical Inspection

Inspect for aftermarket devices which could affect the operation of the A/T shift lock control system. Inspect easily accessible or visible system components for obvious damage or conditions which could cause the symptom.

Intermittents

Intermittent faulty electrical connections or wiring may be the cause of intermittent conditions. Check for loose, bent or corroded terminals and terminal tension. Check for cut, bare or pinched wiring. Simulate the condition that is potentially causing the intermittent connection, either by wiggling the connections or the wiring, test driving or performing other operations while observing scan tool, DVOM or other testing equipment. SYMPTOM TESTS

CAUTIONUse caution when probing fuse or junction blocks, or any connectors. Damage may result to connector receptacle if probe or terminal being used is too large. Electronic modules are sensitive to static electrical charges. If exposed to these charges, damage may result.

SYMPTOM TEST INDEX

TEST A: SHIFT LEVER DOES NOT MOVE WITH BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED

Note. For circuit reference, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION and WIRING DIAGRAMS .

  1. Did you review SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS and all the necessary inspections? If so, go to next step. If not, see «SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS»(/chevrolet/malibu/v-2000-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#shift-interlock-systems) under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Depress the brake pedal. Attempt to move the gearshift lever out of the Park position. Does the gearshift lever move out of the Park position? If so, check for Intermittent condition. See «SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS»(/chevrolet/malibu/v-2000-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#shift-interlock-systems) under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If not, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect the stoplamp switch. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Depress the brake pedal. Attempt to move the gearshift lever out of the Park position. Does the gearshift lever move out of the Park position? If so, go to step 5 . If not, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect the A/T shift lock control actuator. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Depress the brake pedal. Attempt to move the gearshift lever out of the Park position. Does the gearshift lever move out of the Park position? If so, go to step 6 . If not, go to step 7 .
  5. Inspect the stoplamp switch for poor connections. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 10 . If not, go to step 8 .
  6. Inspect the A/T shift lock control actuator for poor connections. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 10 . If not, go to step 9 .
  7. Repair the A/T shift control actuator supply circuit (Dark Green/White wire) for short to voltage. After repairs, go to step 10 .
  8. Replace the stoplamp switch. See «STOPLAMP SWITCH»(/chevrolet/malibu/v-2000-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#shift-interlock-systems) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to step 10 .
  9. Replace the A/T shift lock control actuator. See «SHIFT LOCK ACTUATOR»(/chevrolet/malibu/v-2000-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#shift-interlock-systems) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Did you complete the replacement? If so, go to next step.
  10. Operate the system in order to verify the repair. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, system is okay. If not, go to step 2 .

TEST B: SHIFT LEVER CAN BE MOVED WITHOUT BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED

Note. For circuit reference, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION and WIRING DIAGRAMS .

  1. Did you review SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS and all the necessary inspections? If so, go to next step. If not, see «SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS»(/chevrolet/malibu/v-2000-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#shift-interlock-systems) under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  2. Apply the parking brake and block the wheels. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Attempt to move the gearshift lever out of the Park position. Does the gearshift lever move out of the Park position? If so, go to next step. If not, check for intermittent condition. See «SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS»(/chevrolet/malibu/v-2000-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#shift-interlock-systems) under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect a test light between ground and the ignition feed circuit (Pink wire) at the PNP switch. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Does the test light illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 12 .
  4. Ensure gearshift lever is in the Park position. Connect a test light between ground and the PNP switch park signal circuit (Light Green wire) at the PNP switch. Does the test light illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 9 .
  5. Connect a test light between ground and the PNP switch park signal circuit (Light Green wire) at the stoplamp switch. Does the test light illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 13 .
  6. Connect a test light between ground and the A/T shift lock control actuator supply circuit (Dark Green/White wire) at the stoplamp switch. Press and release the brake pedal several times. Does the test light turn ON and OFF with the brake pedal? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 10 .
  7. Connect a test light between ground and the A/T shift lock control actuator supply circuit (Dark Green/White wire) at the actuator. Press the brake pedal. Does the test light illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 14 .
  8. Connect a test light between the ground circuit (Black wire) at the A/T shift lock control actuator and battery voltage. Does the test light illuminate? If so, go to step 11 . If not, go to step 15 .
  9. Inspect the PNP switch for poor connections. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to Step 19 . If not, go to step 16 .
  10. Inspect stoplamp switch harness connector for poor connections. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 19 . If not, go to step 17 .
  11. Inspect the A/T shift lock control actuator for poor connections. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 19 . If not, go to step 18 .
  12. Repair the open in the ignition feed circuit (Pink wire). After repairs, go to step 19 .
  13. Repair the open in the PNP switch park signal circuit (Light Green wire). After repairs, go to step 19 .
  14. Repair the open in the A/T shift lock control actuator supply circuit (Dark Green/White wire). After repairs, go to step 19 .
  15. Repair the open in the A/T shift lock control actuator ground circuit (Black wire). After repairs, go to step 19 .
  16. Replace the PNP switch. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. After repairs, go to step 19 .
  17. Replace the stoplamp switch. See «STOPLAMP SWITCH»(/chevrolet/malibu/v-2000-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#shift-interlock-systems) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to step 19 .
  18. Replace the A/T shift lock control actuator. See «SHIFT LOCK ACTUATOR»(/chevrolet/malibu/v-2000-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#shift-interlock-systems) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to next step.
  19. Operate the system in order to verify the repair. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, system is okay. If not, go to step 2 .

ADJUSTMENTS

STOPLAMP SWITCH

CAUTIONProper stoplamp switch adjustment is essential. Improper stoplamp switch adjustment may cause brake drag, heat buildup and excessive brake lining wear.

Note. Adjust the stoplamp switch and cruise control release at the same time. The adjustment procedures for the stoplamp switch and the cruise control release switch are identical.

  1. Insert the stoplamp switch (3) into the retainer (2) until the switch body is seated on the retainer. (Scheme 112)
  2. Pull the brake pedal (4) upward against the internal pedal stop. (Scheme 113)
  3. Turn the switch (3) 90 degrees clockwise in order to lock the switch into position and adjust.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. Before disconnecting battery, see COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

Note. For steering column and component removal and installation procedures, see appropriate STEERING COLUMNS article in STEERING.

Note. Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

Removal

Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the floor console. See FLOOR CONSOLE. Disconnect electrical connector from the shift lock actuator. (Scheme 114) Remove both ends of the shift lock actuator from pivot points. (Scheme 115)

Installation

Install the upper clip of the shift lock actuator onto the upper pivot point, and the lower clip onto the lower pivot point. (Scheme 115) Install the floor console. Install the electrical connector to the shift lock actuator. (Scheme 114) Connect the negative battery cable.

Remove the front seats from the vehicle. See FRONT SEATS. Fold the console compartment up. Remove the rear cupholder from the floor console. Remove the console trim plate. See FRONT FLOOR CONSOLE TRIM PLATE. Remove the console screws from the floor console. (Scheme 116) Remove the floor console from the vehicle.

Install the floor console into the vehicle. Install the console screws into the floor console. (Scheme 116) Tighten the screws to 18 INCH lbs. (2 N.m). Install the console trim plate. Install the rear cupholder to the floor console. Install the front seats into the vehicle.

Place the gearshift lever in the Neutral position. Remove the gearshift lever knob retainer using a small flat-bladed tool. (Scheme 117) Remove the knob, by pulling upward. Release the front floor console trim plate retainers, using a flat bladed tool. Remove the front floor console trim plate from the front floor console. (Scheme 118) Disconnect the electrical connectors from the front floor console trim plate.

Connect the electrical connectors to the front floor console trim plate. Align the front floor console trim plate retainers to the slots in the front floor console. Install the front floor console trim plate, pressing into place until fully seated. (Scheme 118) Position the knob to the shift lever. Install the knob retainer, pressing into place until fully seated. Place the gearshift lever in the Park position.

Position the front seats forward in order to gain access to the seat adjuster attaching bolts. Remove the seat adjuster attaching bolts. (Scheme 119) Disconnect the seat belt wiring harness (driver's side only). Disconnect the power seat electrical connector, if equipped, (driver's side only). Remove the front seat. Manually tilt the seat forward in order to disengage the hooks from the floor pan.

Manually tilt the seats forward in order to engage the hooks to the floor pan. (Scheme 119) Connect the power seat electrical connector, if equipped, (driver's side only). Connect the seat belt wiring harness (driver's side only). Position the front seat forward in order to gain access to the seat adjuster attaching bolt.

Remove the push pins from the left halve of the sound insulator on the drivers side and remove from the IP carrier. (Scheme 120) Remove the bolts from the right halve of the sound insulator on the drivers side and remove from the IP carrier.

Install the right halve of the sound insulator on the drivers side to the IP carrier, and install the bolts to the sound insulator. (Scheme 120) Tighten the bolts to 18 INCH lbs. (2 N.m). Install the left halve of the sound insulator on the drivers side to the IP carrier and install the push pin.

Remove the driver side sound insulator. See SOUND INSULATOR (LEFT SIDE) . Remove the electrical connection. Remove the stoplamp switch, by grasping the stoplamp switch and turning it 90 degrees counterclockwise while pulling toward the rear of the vehicle. See STOPLAMP SWITCH under ADJUSTMENTS.

Insert the stoplamp switch into the retainer until the switch body is seated on the retainer. Pull the brake pedal upward against the internal pedal stop. Turn the switch 90 degrees clockwise in order to lock the switch into position. Connect the electrical connector. Adjust the stoplamp switch. See STOPLAMP SWITCH under ADJUSTMENTS. Install the driver's side sound insulator. See SOUND INSULATOR (LEFT SIDE) .
