ALCL Connector Identification ALCL is located under left side of dash on pickup models and under driver's seat on van models. Scheme 9

Turn ignition switch off. Disconnect negative battery cables. Locate ECM and remove mounting hardware. Remove electrical connector from ECM and remove ECM. Remove PROM from ECM.

Install PROM in new ECM. Reinstall ECM in vehicle and connect electrical connectors. Reconnect negative battery cables.

  1. Remove ECM from vehicle as previously described and remove access cover. Note location of reference notches in PROM and ECM for reassembly reference.
  2. Engage one end of PROM carrier with hook end of rocker- type PROM removal tool. Press on vertical bar end of tool and rock engaged end of PROM carrier up as far as possible.
  3. Engage opposite end of PROM carrier in the same manner and rock this end up as far as possible. Repeat process until PROM carrier and PROM are free of PROM socket. NOTE: PROM carrier should ONLY be removed with special PROM removal tool. Use of any other method may damage PROM or PROM socket.
  4. PROM carrier and PROM should lift off of PROM socket easily.

Replacing PROM in Electronic Control Module Always use PROM removal tool when replacing PROM. Scheme 11

  1. Check that new PROM has same service number as replaced PROM. Place new PROM and carrier in ECM. Press on PROM carrier until PROM is firmly seated in ECM. Make sure that reference notches in ECM and PROM are properly aligned.
  2. Reinstall PROM access cover and screws. Reinstall ECM in vehicle as previously described.
