Circuit/System Description
If a malfunction is detected, a DTC will be stored in non-volatile memory. During a frontal crash of sufficient force the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) will allow current to flow through the deployment loop in order to deploy the driver steering wheel air bag. The SDM performs continuous diagnostic tests on the deployment loops to check for proper circuit continuity and for shorts to ground or voltage.
There are 2 shorting bars used within each connector which will short together both driver steering wheel air bag stage 1 high circuit and driver steering wheel air bag stage 1 low circuit and both driver steering wheel air bag stage 2 high circuit and driver steering wheel air bag stage 2 low circuit when the connector is disconnected. This will help to prevent unwanted deployment of the air bag during servicing.
Conditions for Running the DTC
Ignition voltage is between 9-16 volts.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
B0012 01 Stage 1 or B0013 01 Stage 2
The driver steering wheel air bag high and/or low circuit is shorted to voltage for 120 milliseconds.
B0012 02 Stage 1 or B0013 02 Stage 2
The driver steering wheel air bag high and/or low circuit is shorted to ground for 120 milliseconds.
B0012 04 Stage 1 or B0013 04 Stage 2
The driver steering wheel air bag high and/or low circuit is open for 120 milliseconds.
B0012 0D Stage 1 or B0013 0D Stage 2
The driver steering wheel air bag deployment loop resistance is greater than 5.1 ohms for 120 milliseconds.
B0012 0E Stage 1 or B0013 0E Stage 2
The driver steering wheel air bag deployment loop resistance is less than 1.3 ohms for 120 milliseconds.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
- The SDM requests the instrument panel cluster (IPC) to illuminate the AIR BAG indicator.
- The SDM will store a DTC, however if an event occurs the system will still attempt deployments.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
- The condition for setting the DTC no longer exists.
- A history DTC will clear once 100 malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.
Diagnostic Aids
- When a harness connector is disconnected, the high control and low control circuits are shorted together by the integral shorting bar. This should be taken into account when testing for faults on these circuits.
- This DTC usually indicates a poor connection or a wiring malfunction between the SDM and the deployment loop.

Circuit/System Testing
Note. When removing the connectors inspect for damage, corrosion or poor connection. Damage or corrosion to the following requires repair or replacement of the affected component/connector: Driver steering wheel air bag SDM Driver steering wheel air bag wiring harness connector SDM wiring harness connector If the appropriate load tool adaptor can not be located, use two 3A fused jumper wires with appropriate test probe terminals to connect the harness connector to the load tool test tool.
- Verify that the steering wheel module connector and the CPA are engaged. If the above condition is not found, make the appropriate repair.
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the driver steering wheel air bag.
- Install a 3A fused jumper between the J 38715-A SIR driver/passenger load tool and the harness connector of the driver steering wheel air bag.
- Ignition ON, verify DTC is set as current. If the DTC is not set or is set as history, cycle ignition OFF, disconnect the load tool and the jumper, reconnect the harness connector at the driver steering wheel air bag, and cycle the ignition ON. If the DTC resets after reconnecting the module, replace the driver steering wheel air bag.
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the load tool and the jumper.
- Disconnect the harness connector at the steering wheel module coil.
- Install a 3A fused jumper between the J 38715-A SIR driver/passenger load tool and the harness connector of the steering wheel module coil.
- Ignition ON, verify the DTC is set as current. If DTC is not set or is set as history, replace the steering wheel module coil.
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the load tool and jumper.
- Disconnect the harness connector at the SDM.
- Ignition ON, test for less than 1 volt between the appropriate high control circuit listed below and ground: Steering wheel module coil harness connector - Stage 1 terminal A1 X276 Steering wheel module coil harness connector - Stage 2 terminal B1 X276 If greater than the specified range, test the control circuit for a short to voltage.
- Test for less than 1 volt between the appropriate low control circuit listed below and ground: Steering wheel module coil harness connector - Stage 1 terminal A2 X276 Steering wheel module coil harness connector - Stage 2 terminal B2 X276 If greater than the specified range, test the control circuit for a short to voltage.
- Ignition OFF, test for infinite resistance between the appropriate high control circuit listed below and ground: Steering wheel module coil harness connector - Stage 1 terminal A1 X276 Steering wheel module coil harness connector - Stage 2 terminal B1 X276 If less than the specified value, test the control circuit for a short to ground.
- Test for infinite resistance between the appropriate low control circuit listed below and ground: Steering wheel module coil harness connector - Stage 1 terminal A2 X276 Steering wheel module coil harness connector - Stage 2 terminal B2 X276 If less than the specified value, test the control circuit for a short to ground.
- Test for less then 5 ohms between the appropriate high control circuit terminals listed below: Steering wheel module coil harness connector - Stage 1 terminal A1 X276 and the SDM terminal 9 Steering wheel module coil harness connector - Stage 2 terminal B1 X276 and the SDM terminal 5 If greater than the specified range, test the control circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Test for less then 1 ohm between the appropriate low control circuit terminals listed below: Steering wheel module coil harness connector - Stage 1 terminal A2 X276 and the SDM terminal 8 Steering wheel module coil harness connector - Stage 2 terminal B2 X276 and the SDM terminal 4 If greater that the specified range, test the control circuit for an open/high resistance.
- If all circuits test normal, replace the SDM.

J 38715-A Driver and Passenger SIR Load Tool
Note. When removing the connectors inspect for damage or corrosion. Damage or corrosion to the following requires repair or replacement of the affected component/connector: Pretensioner Air bag SDM Pretensioner wiring harness connector Air bag wiring harness connector SDM wiring harness connector If the appropriate load tool adaptor can not be located, use two 3A fused jumper wires with appropriate test probe terminals to connect the harness connector to the load tool test tool.
- Verify that the appropriate air bag or pretensioner connector and CPA are engaged. If the above condition is not found, make the appropriate repair.
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate air bag or pretensioner.
- Install a 3A fused jumper between the J 38715-A driver and passenger sir load tool and the harness connector of the appropriate air bag or pretensioner.
- Ignition ON, with a scan tool, verify the appropriate DTC is set as current. If the DTC is not set or is set as history, cycle ignition OFF, disconnect the load tool and fused jumper, reconnect the harness connector at the air bag or pretensioner, and cycle the ignition ON. If the DTC resets after reconnecting the air bag or pretensioner, replace the air bag or pretensioner.
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the load tool and fused jumper. Disconnect the harness connector at the SDM.
- Ignition ON, test for less than 1 volt between the appropriate high control circuit terminal listed below and ground: Passenger instrument panel air bag stage 1 terminal A1 (light duty) Passenger instrument panel air bag stage 1 terminal A (heavy duty) Passenger instrument panel air bag stage 2 terminal B1 Left roof rail air bag terminal B Right roof rail air bag terminal B Right rear roof rail air bag terminal B Driver seat belt buckle pretensioner terminal A Passenger seat belt buckle pretensioner terminal A If greater than the specified range, test the control circuit for a short to voltage.
- Test for less than 1 volt between the appropriate low control circuit terminal listed below and ground: Passenger instrument panel air bag stage 1 terminal A2 (light duty) Passenger instrument panel air bag stage 1 terminal B (heavy duty) Passenger instrument panel air bag stage 2 terminal B2 Left roof rail air bag terminal A Right roof rail air bag terminal A Right rear roof rail air bag terminal A Driver seat belt buckle pretensioner terminal B Passenger seat belt buckle pretensioner terminal B If greater than the specified range, test the control circuit for a short to voltage.
- Ignition OFF, test for infinite resistance between the appropriate high control circuit terminal listed below and ground: Passenger instrument panel air bag stage 1 terminal A1 (light duty) Passenger instrument panel air bag stage 1 terminal A (heavy duty) Passenger instrument panel air bag stage 2 terminal B1 Left roof rail air bag terminal B Right roof rail air bag terminal B Right rear roof rail air bag terminal B Driver seat belt buckle pretensioner terminal A Passenger seat belt buckle pretensioner terminal A If less than the specified value, test the control circuit for a short to ground.
- Test for infinite resistance between the appropriate low control circuit terminal listed below and ground: Passenger instrument panel air bag stage 1 terminal A2 (light duty) Passenger instrument panel air bag stage 1 terminal B (heavy duty) Passenger instrument panel air bag stage 2 terminal B2 Left roof rail air bag terminal A Right roof rail air bag terminal A Right rear roof rail air bag terminal A Driver seat belt buckle pretensioner terminal B Passenger seat belt buckle pretensioner terminal B If less than the specified value, test the control circuit for a short to ground.
- Test for less then 5 ohms between the following high control circuit terminals listed below: Passenger instrument panel air bag stage 1 terminal A1 (light duty) and SDM terminal 10 (light duty). Passenger instrument panel air bag stage 1 terminal A (heavy duty) and SDM terminal 10 (heavy duty). Passenger instrument panel air bag stage 2 terminal B1 and SDM terminal 6. Left roof rail air bag terminal B and SDM terminal 13. Right roof rail air bag terminal B and SDM terminal 14. Right rear roof rail air bag terminal B and SDM terminal 22. Driver seat belt buckle pretensioner terminal A and SDM terminal 25. Passenger seat belt buckle pretensioner terminal A and SDM terminal 26. If greater than the specified range, test the control circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Test for less then 5 ohms between the following low control circuit terminals listed below: Passenger instrument panel air bag stage 1 terminal A2 (light duty) and SDM terminal 11 (light duty). Passenger instrument panel air bag stage 1 terminal B (heavy duty) and SDM terminal 11 (heavy duty). Passenger instrument panel air bag stage 2 terminal B2 and SDM terminal 7. Left roof rail air bag terminal A and SDM terminal 12. Right roof rail air bag terminal A and SDM terminal 15. Right rear roof rail air bag terminal A and SDM terminal 23. Driver seat belt buckle pretensioner terminal B and SDM terminal 24. Passenger seat belt buckle pretensioner terminal B and SDM terminal 27. If greater than the specified range, test the control circuit for an open/high resistance.
- If all circuits test normal, replace the SDM.
Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the diagnostic procedure.

The inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) contains a device that converts vehicle velocity changes into an electrical signal. The SDM compares this electrical signal to a value stored in memory. When the generated signal exceeds the stored value, the SDM performs additional signal processing and compares the generated signals to values stored in memory. When two of the generated signals exceed the stored values, the SDM will cause current to flow through the deployment loops, deploying the air bags and/or pretensioners causing DTC B0052 to set.
Ignition voltage is between 9-16 volts.
B0052
- The SDM detects a frontal impact of sufficient force to warrant deployment of the frontal air bags.
- The SDM detects a side impact of sufficient force to warrant deployment of a side impact air bag and/or roof rail air bag.
- The SDM has deployed the seat belt buckle pretensioner for 3 separate deployments.
- The SDM requests the instrument panel cluster (IPC) to illuminate the Service Air Bag indicator.
- The SDM records crash data.
After an air bag deployment or 3 separate buckle pretensioner deployments the DTC becomes latched and cannot be cleared.

Circuit/System Verification
| IMPORTANT | The seat belt buckle pretensioners may deploy for impacts that are not severe enough to warrant frontal or side air bag deployment. The SDM is capable of sustaining 3 buckle pretensioner deployment events, or one frontal or side deployment event. After the maximum number of deployments has occurred, DTC B0052 sets and becomes a latched code, which cannot be cleared. |
- Ignition OFF, verify no signs of air bag or pretensioner deployment exist. If any signs of deployment exist, refer to «Repairs and Inspections Required After a Collision»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system) .
- Verify DTC B0052 is not set. If DTC B0052 is set, clear DTCs. If the DTC sets, replace the SDM.

The passenger presence sensor continually monitors itself and if a fault in this circuit occurs, a DTC will set in the passenger presence module. When the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) detects this DTC within the passenger presence module, it will notify the customer of the enable/disable status by illuminating the OFF indicator on the PASSENGER AIR BAG ON/OFF indicators. Then the passenger presence module will communicate to the SDM through serial data communications that a PPS fault is present. The SDM will then disable the deployment of the passenger instrument panel air bag and then illuminate the AIR BAG warning indicator.
Ignition voltage is between 9-16 V.
- The SDM has received a fault message from the passenger presence module.
- The passenger presence module detects a wet seat fault if DTC B0074 0F is set.
- The SDM disables the passenger instrument panel air bag deployment loop.
- The SDM will illuminate the OFF portion of the PASSENGER AIR BAG ON/OFF indicator.
- The SDM requests the instrument panel cluster (IPC) to illuminate the AIR BAG indicator.
- The condition for setting the DTC no longer exists.
- A history DTC will clear once 100 malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.
- If either the SDM or PPS were replaced verify that the correct part numbers were used for the vehicle application.
- If this DTC is set as either current or history it may have been caused by an electronic device. If an electronic device (Computers, MP3 Players, Cell Phones, Diagnostic Scan Tool, Power Inverter, etc.) was placed on the passenger seat the passenger presence module may command the passenger air bag indicator to turn on and/or command the passenger seat belt indicator to turn on. Make sure there are no objects on the passenger seat and clear the DTCs. If this DTC resets then perform this diagnostic. If the DTC does not reset there is no further work needed on the passenger presence system.
- If this DTC is set as either current or history it may have been caused by an aftermarket seat heater. The aftermarket seat heater may command the passenger air bag indicator to turn on and/or command the passenger seat belt indicator to turn on. Remove the aftermarket seat heater from the passenger seat and clear the DTCs. If this DTC resets then perform this diagnostic. If the DTC does not reset there is no further work needed on the passenger presence system.

Note. The passenger presence system (PPS) is a calibrated unit. When replacing the assembly all parts in the service kit must remain together. Do not mix any of the old parts with the new parts. PPS comes in as part of a service kit which contains a seat foam, presence sensor and a electronic control unit (ECU) module (if applicable). When removing connectors, inspect for damage or corrosion. Damage or corrosion in the following requires repair or replacement of the affected component/connector: Passenger presence module Passenger presence sensor wiring harness
- Verify that no other passenger presence module DTCs are set. If other passenger presence module DTCs are set, investigate those DTCs first.
- Verify that DTC B0074 0F is not set. If this DTC is set, verify there are no electronic devices on the passenger seat. If not, then verify the seat is dry by removing the trim from the seat bottom frame. IF the seat is wet, allow 24-48 hours dry time with trim completely off. If the DTC is history, do not replace the passenger presence module. Clear the passenger presence module codes.
- Verify that DTC B0074 00, B0074 0D, or B0074 0E is not set. If any of the DTCs are set then replace the passenger presence module.

When the ignition is turned ON, the Passenger Presence Module and the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module performs tests to diagnose critical malfunctions within itself. When the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module has completed the power-up mode, the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module will establish communication with the Passenger Presence Module. The Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module will also request the instrument panel cluster to illuminate both of the PASSENGER AIR BAG ON/OFF indicators for 5 seconds. If the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module detects that the Passenger Presence Module has set a current DTC, the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module will then disable the passenger instrument panel air bag deployment loop, set DTC B0081, and illuminate the AIR BAG indicator.
Ignition voltage is between 9-16 V.
Any of the following conditions must exist for 5 seconds
B0081 00
The Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module has a general fault present.
B0081 11
The Passenger Presence Module is above maximum threshold. The Passenger Presence Module failed the preload/build check.
B0081 3A
The Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module has received a mismatch message indicating the wrong Passenger Presence Module is installed on the vehicle.
B0081 4B
The Passenger Presence Module is not calibrated. Preload procedure has not been run.
B0081 5A
The Passenger Presence Module detects a plausibility error.
B0081 71
The Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module has received invalid or no serial data from the Passenger Presence Module.
- The Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module requests the instrument panel cluster (IPC) to illuminate the AIR BAG indicator.
- The passenger instrument panel air bag deployment loop will be disabled.
- The condition for setting the DTC no longer exists.
- A history DTC will clear once 100 malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.
- If either the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module or Passenger Presence Module were replaced verify that the correct part numbers were used for the vehicle application.
- If this DTC is set as either current or history it may have been caused by an electronic device. If an electronic device (Computers, MP3 Players, Cell Phones, Diagnostic Scan Tool, Power Inverter, etc.) was placed on the passenger seat the Passenger Presence Module may command the passenger air bag indicator to turn on and/or command the passenger seat belt indicator to turn on. - Ignition ON, verify that DTC B0081 is the only DTC set in the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module or Passenger Presence Module. If any other DTCs are set, refer to «Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/oem-general-information/#vehicle-diagnostic-information-diagnostic-information-and-procedures__diagnostic-trouble-code-dtc-list) .
- Verify DTC B0081 00, DTC B0081 3A, or DTC B0081 71 is not set in the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module. If any of these DTCs set in the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module diagnose the following: Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module DTC B0081 00: If DTC B0081 00 sets in the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module then refer to step 3 and diagnose the Passenger Presence Module DTC B0081 5A. By diagnosing the Passenger Presence Module DTC B0081 5A, DTC B0081 00 will be fixed in the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module. Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module DTC B0081 3A: Either an incorrect replacement Passenger Presence Module or Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module was placed in this vehicle. Check and make sure the part numbers are correct for each module. If the part numbers are correct clear this DTC and see if DTC B0081 3A resets as a current DTC. If DTC B0081 3A resets then replace the Passenger Presence Module. Clear DTCs again and check if DTC B0081 3A sets as current again. If DTC B0081 3A sets again then replace the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module. Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module DTC B0081 71: If DTC B0081 71 sets in the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module then refer to Circuit/System Testing below.
- DTC B0081 11, DTC B0081 4B, or DTC B0081 5A is set in the Passenger Presence Module, diagnose the following: Passenger Presence Module DTC B0081 11: If DTC B0081 11 sets in the Passenger Presence Module if the correct calibration was not learned by the Passenger Presence Module. Make sure there is nothing on the passenger seat, not even a scan tool. Perform the Passenger Presence Module Preload procedure, refer to «Passenger Presence System Programming and Setup»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems__passenger-presence-system-programming-and-setup) . Clear the DTC's and check if DTC B0081 11 sets again in the Passenger Presence Module. If DTC B0081 11 sets again replace the Passenger Presence Module. Passenger Presence Module DTC B0081 4B: If DTC B0081 4B sets in the Passenger Presence Module if the correct calibration was not learned by the Passenger Presence Module. Make sure there is nothing on the passenger seat, not even a scan tool. Perform the Passenger Presence Module Preload procedure, refer to «Passenger Presence System Programming and Setup»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems__passenger-presence-system-programming-and-setup) . Clear the DTC's and check if DTC B0081 11 sets again in the Passenger Presence Module. If DTC B0081 11 sets again replace the Passenger Presence Module. Passenger Presence Module DTC B0081 5A: If DTC B0081 5A sets in the Passenger Presence Module check the connections at the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module and Passenger Presence Module. Clear the DTC's and check if DTC B0081 5A sets again as a current DTC in the Passenger Presence Module. If DTC B0081 5A sets then replace the Passenger Presence Module. Clear DTCs again and check if DTC B0081 5A sets as current again. If DTC B0081 5A sets again then replace the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module.
Note. When removing connectors, inspect for damage or corrosion. - Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the Passenger Presence Module.
- Ignition OFF, test for less then 10 ohms between the ground circuit terminal 4 and ground. If greater then the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Ignition ON, verify a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal 3 and ground. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.

The side impact sensor utilizes a unidirectional 2-wire circuit. The side impact sensor modulates current on the interface to send ID, state of health, and deployment commands to the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM). The SDM serves as a power source and a ground for the side impact sensor. When the ignition is turned ON and input power from the SDM is first detected, the side impact sensor responds by performing internal diagnostics and sending an ID to the SDM. The SDM considers the ID to be valid if the response time is less than 5 seconds. The side impact sensor continually communicates status messages to the SDM, which determines if a fault is present in the side impact sensor circuit. When a fault is detected, the SDM may reset the side impact sensor up to 2 times by removing and reapplying power to it. If the fault is still present, the SDM will set a DTC.
Ignition voltage is between 9-16 volts.

- The side impact sensor has been shorted to voltage, open, or shorted to ground.
- The side impact sensor current has been above 23 mA for greater than 5 milliseconds.

- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate impact sensor and the SDM.
- Ignition ON, test for less than 1 volt between the signal circuit terminal B and ground. If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage.
- Ignition ON, test for less than 1 volt between the low reference circuit terminal A and ground. If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for a short to voltage.
- Test for infinite resistance between the signal circuit terminal B and ground. If less than the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to ground.
- Test for less than 1 ohm between the signal circuit terminal B at the impact sensor and the appropriate SDM harness connector terminal listed below: Right front side impact sensor - terminal 43. The inflatable restraint vehicle rollover sensor (ROS) utilizes battery power supply and a bidirectional interface circuit. The ROS modulates current on the interface to send ID, State of Health, and deployment commands to the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM). When the ignition is turned on the ROS responds by performing internal diagnostics and sending an ID to the SDM. The ROS continually communicates status messages to the SDM, which determines if a fault is present in the ROS circuit. If the fault is present, the SDM will set a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
Ignition voltage is between 9-16 V.

- The SDM received a fault present message from the ROS.
- The ROS is in assembly plant mode and the SDM is in production mode.
- The SDM has not received any data from the ROS.

- The SDM has received a Not Ok (NOK) message from the vehicle roll over sensor.

B0090 3A
- The SDM has received an ID message from the vehicle roll over sensor which does not match the ID stored in the SDM memory.

- The side air bag deployment loops will be disabled for roll over events only, however side impact events the side air bags are still enabled.
- The condition for setting the DTC no longer exists.
- A history DTC will clear once 100 malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.

Note. When removing connectors inspect for damage or corrosion. Damage or corrosion to the following requires repair or replacement of the affected component/connector: Vehicle rollover sensor SDM Vehicle roll over sensor harness connector SDM wiring harness connector
- Verify DTC B0090 39 or B0090 71 is not set. If either DTC is set, replace the rollover sensor.
- Verify DTC B0090 3A is not set. If the DTC is set, verify the correct part number ROS is installed in the vehicle. If the installed ROS is incorrect, replace the ROS.
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the ROS.
- Test for less than 5 ohms between the ground circuit terminal 6 and ground. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Ignition ON, verify a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal 1 and ground. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
- Test for less than 1 V between the signal circuit terminal 5 and ground. If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage.
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the SDM.
- Test for less than 5 ohms between the signal circuit terminal 5 at the ROS harness connector and the signal circuit terminal 58 at the SDM harness connector. If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Ignition ON, test for less than 1 V between the signal circuit terminal 5 at the ROS harness connector and B+. If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground.
- If all circuits test normal, replace the ROS.
- Reconnect all SIR components. Ignition ON, verify the DTC is not set as current. If the DTC resets as current, replace the SDM.

The impact sensors are equipped on vehicles to supplement the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System performance. The impact sensors are electronic and are not part of the deployment loops, but instead provide inputs to the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM). The impact sensors can assist in determining the severity of some frontal and side collisions. The SDM uses the input from the impact sensors to assist in determining the severity of a collision further supporting air bag deployment. If the SDM determines a deployment is warranted, the SDM will cause current to flow through the deployment loops deploying the appropriate air bags. The passenger air bag disable switch is ignition key operated to manually enable or disable the passenger instrument panel air bag. When the ignition is turned ON, ignition 1 voltage is supplied to the passenger air bag disable switch and based on the position of the switch either the passenger air bag disable switch signal circuit (ON) or the passenger air bag indicator control (OFF) circuit will be active to the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM). The SDM will communicate to the instrument panel cluster (IPC) to illuminate the appropriate the ON/OFF indicator as well as enable or disable the deployment of the passenger instrument panel air bag. If a malfunction is detected, a DTC will be stored.

The SDM detects both the passenger air bag disable switch signal circuit (ON) and the passenger air bag indicator control (OFF) circuit active or inactive for 500 milliseconds.

The inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) stores a 4-digit primary key for the inflatable restraint vehicle roll over sensor (ROS). The SDM sends the ROS the primary key. If the ROS determines that it is the wrong primary key, the ROS will set DTC B1001 and send the SDM a vehicle mismatch message. The SDM then will set DTC B0090 3A and illuminate the SIR Warning Indicator. The ROS does not use a secondary key.
Ignition voltage is between 9-16 volts.

The inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) stores a primary data key, which is a 4-digit number, and a secondary data key, which is a portion of the vehicle identification number (VIN). When the ignition is turned ON, the SDM compares this information to the information stored in the body control module (BCM) over the serial data communication circuit. If there is a mismatch between the information stored in the SDM and BCM, DTC B1001 will set.
Ignition voltage is between 9-16 volts.
- The 4-digit primary data key stored in the SDM does not match the 4 digits stored in the BCM.
- The VIN stored in the BCM does not match that of the vehicle.
- The SDM requests the instrument panel cluster (IPC) to illuminate the AIR BAG indicator.
- The SDM disables all deployments.
- The last 4-digit Primary Data Key in the SDM match the last 4 digits stored in the BCM.
- The VIN that is stored in the SDM matches the VIN stored in the BCM.
This DTC is an indication that an incorrect SDM is installed in the vehicle, or that the SDM and/or the BCM was replaced without reprogramming the BCM with the new information.

The vehicle rollover sensor (ROS) monitors the vehicle speed signal (VSS) on the GMLAN serial data circuit. If the VSS is marked as invalid or is missing, the ROS will set a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
Ignition voltage is between 9-16 V.

- A history DTC will clear once 100 malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.

The passenger air bag ON/OFF indicators are used to notify the driver when the passenger presence system (PPS) has enabled or disabled the passenger instrument panel air bag. When the ignition is turned ON, the ignition voltage is supplied to the passenger air bag ON/OFF indicators and to the PPS. The instrument panel cluster (IPC) grounds all indicator control circuits to the passenger air bag ON/OFF indicators for illumination. The IPC receives serial data messages from the supplemental inflatable restraints system to turn ON the indicators as necessary.
After the SDM is programmed, the SDM setup procedure is required. During this set up procedure, the SDM will compare the content that was just programmed to the actual components that are installed on the vehicle. If the SDM detects that there are too few or too many components on the system, DTC B1019 00 will set and not allow the setup procedure to complete.

B1019 00
- The SDM was programmed with the wrong options for the vehicle.
- The wrong components were installed for the content of the vehicle.
- SDM connector may have bent pins or shorting bars causing the SDM to learn deployment loops that are not actually present.
B1019 3A
- The vehicle was configured for passenger presence system (PPS) but the SDM does not detect that the PPS indicator is present due to loss of power at indicator.
- The vehicle is not configured for PPS and the SDM detects that the PPS indicator is present.
- The SDM requests the instrument panel cluster (IPC) to illuminate the AIR BAG warning lamp ON.
- The SDM disables all deployments when B1019 00 DTC is set as current.
- The correct SDM must be installed.
- The correct components must be installed.
- The PPS indicator operates as indicated in the «Supplemental Inflatable Restraint System Description and Operation»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system) .
If the SDM has been replaced, make sure that the correct part number was installed for this vehicle. If after programming the SDM DTC B1019 00 sets as current, check for bent pins or shorting bars at the SDM connector.

- Ignition ON, verify the scan tool End Model Part Number is correct for the vehicle. If the part number is incorrect, reprogram the SDM.
- Observe the scan tool PPS Options parameter to determine how the vehicle PPS is currently configured in the SDM. Verify the actual vehicle equipment and the current configuration indicated by the scan tool parameter are the same. If the original configuration does not match the actual vehicle equipment, reprogram the SDM with the correct configuration.
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connectors at the SDM and verify the connector is in good condition and has no bent pins, terminals or shorting bars If damage is found, repair the bent pins, terminals or shorting bars as needed and perform the Setup New SDM procedure.
- Connect the harness connector at the SDM.
- Ignition ON, verify the scan tool System Configuration matches the actual components installed on the vehicle. If the System Configuration does not match the actual components installed, reprogram the SDM with the correct components.
- Ignition ON, clear all PPS and SDM DTCs.
- Verify DTC B1019 does not set. If DTC sets, replace the SDM.

When the vehicle ignition switch is placed in the RUN or CRANK position, the switch supplies voltage to the SDM ignition 1 input terminal. If an open, short to voltage, or short to ground in this SDM ignition 1 circuit is detected, then DTC B1370 will set.

The SDM detects a short to battery in the ignition 1 voltage circuit when the switch is in the OFF position.

- Ignition OFF, remove the AIR BAG fuse.
- Ignition ON, verify a test lamp illuminates between the ignition supply side of the fuse and ground. - Ignition OFF, remove the SDM harness connector.

- Ignition ON, test for less than 1 volt between the SDM harness connector ignition 1 voltage circuit terminal 32 and ground. If greater than the specified value, test the circuit for a short to voltage.
- If all circuits test normal, reconnect all connectors, replace fuse, clear all DTCs. If DTC B1370 stays current, replace the SDM.

Introduction
The Passenger Presence System (PPS) is a calibrated system that requires checking for preloads within each region when the system has been serviced or replaced. If the passenger seat bottom cushion, seat bottom trim, or heater pad has been serviced, reinstalled, or removed for any reason, the procedure below will check for any preloads on the PPS. The PPS module cannot be tested for preload until it is unlocked using SPS programming. A service replacement PPS module does not require an unlock procedure prior to an initial preload test. Once a preload test has been performed, the PPS module will lock regardless of a pass or fail status. If a module needs to be retested, it must first be unlocked with SPS programming. Before you start, read these procedures carefully and completely. For further information regarding the PPS, refer to Supplemental Inflatable Restraint System Description and Operation .
Note. The Passenger Presence System will not function properly if the Passenger Presence System detects a preload within a region. The Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle must be performed after successfully completing the preload test procedure to ensure the system is functioning properly.

The PPS will fail the preload test when a region has detected a preload/pressure on it. If a preload test fails, the scan tool will display a chart as illustrated below. A Yes status indicates which region(s) have a preload condition. Refer to the chart below and the above illustration to identify the failed region.

- Empty the front outboard passenger seat.
- With the scan tool, perform the Preload Passenger Presence System procedure.
- If the test fails, adjust the seat bottom trim, and massage the cover to ensure unwanted pressure is not present in the specified area. Proceed to the Passenger Presence System Preload Test (Existing Module) to retest after adjustment is made.
- Once the test successfully completes, cycle the ignition key OFF.
- Perform the «Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/oem-general-information/#vehicle-diagnostic-information-diagnostic-information-and-procedures) after successfully completing the preload test procedure to ensure the system is functioning properly.

When the ignition is turned ON, the instrument panel cluster (IPC) flashes the air bag indicator for a bulb check. The inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) performs diagnostic tests on the SIR system during the bulb check. If any malfunction exists the SDM will request the IPC to illuminate the air bag indicator steady, via serial data. If a preexisting malfunction exists, the air bag indicator will illuminate steady immediately after the ignition is turned ON. If the ignition 1 voltage is outside of the normal operating voltage range 9-16 volts, the SDM will command the IPC to illuminate the air bag indicator with no DTCs present, then disables all deployment loops.
A DTC B1370 may set if the ignition 1 circuit is outside the 9-16 volts range.

- Ignition OFF, monitor the IPC, ignition ON. The SIR warning indicator should flash then turn OFF. If the SIR warning indicator continually flashes, program the SDM. The PASSENGER AIR BAG ON/OFF indicators are used to notify the driver when the Passenger Presence System (PPS) has enabled or disabled the passenger instrument panel air bag. When the ignition is turned ON, the passenger presence module will commands both PASSENGER AIR BAG ON/OFF indicators ON for 5 seconds. The passenger presence module conducts tests on the PPS components and circuits while both PASSENGER AIR BAG ON/OFF indicators are ON. If no malfunctions are detected, the passenger presence module will turn the PASSENGER AIR BAG indicator ON or OFF, depending on the status of the PPS. If a malfunction is detected, the passenger presence module will store a DTC, default the PPS to the OFF state, and communicate with the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) that a DTC has been set. The SDM will request the instrument panel cluster (IPC) to turn the AIR BAG indicator ON to notify the driver of a malfunction.

- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the inflatable restraint I/P module indicator.
- Ignition OFF, test for less then 1 ohm between the ground circuit terminal 2 and ground. If greater then the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Ignition ON, verify a test lamp illuminates between the ignition circuit terminal 4 and ground. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ignition circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal and the ignition circuit fuse is open, test or replace the inflatable restraint passenger air bag On/Off indicator.
- Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal 3 and the ignition circuit terminal 4. With the passenger seat unoccupied, then occupied the test lamp should switch states within 5 seconds. If the test lamp is always on, test the control circuit for a short to ground. If all circuits test normal replace the IPC. If the test lamp is always off, test the control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If all circuits test normal replace the IPC.
- Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal 1 and the ignition circuit terminal 4. With the passenger seat unoccupied, then occupied the test lamp should switch states within 5 seconds. If the test lamp is always on, test the control circuit for a short to ground. If all circuits test normal replace the IPC. If the test lamp is always off, test the control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If all circuits test normal replace the IPC.
- If all circuits test normal, replace the inflatable restraint I/P module indicator.

SIR Disabling and Enabling
SIR component location affects how a vehicle should be serviced. There are parts of the SIR system installed in various locations around a vehicle. To find the location of the SIR components refer to Supplemental Inflatable Restraint System Description and Operation .
There are several reasons for disabling the SIR system, such as repairs to the SIR system or servicing a component near or attached to an SIR component. There are several ways to disable the SIR system depending on what type of service is being performed. The following information covers the proper procedures for disabling/enabling the SIR system.

SIR Service Precautions
| WARNING | When performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, the SIR system must be disabled. Failure to observe the correct procedure could cause deployment of the SIR components. Serious injury can occur. Failure to observe the correct procedure could also result in unnecessary SIR system repairs. |
The Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) maintains a reserved energy supply. The reserved energy supply provides deployment power for the air bags if the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module loses battery power during a collision. Deployment power is available for as much as 2 minutes after disconnecting the vehicle power. Waiting 2 minutes before working on the system after disabling the SIR system prevents deployment of the air bags from the reserved energy supply.
General Service Instructions
The following are general service instructions which must be followed in order to properly repair the vehicle and return it to its original integrity
- Do not expose air bags to temperatures above 65°C (149°F).
- Verify the correct replacement part number. Do not substitute a component from a different vehicle.
- Use only original GM replacement parts available from your authorized GM dealer. Do not use salvaged parts for repairs to the SIR system.
Discard any of the following components if it has been dropped from a height of 92 cm (3 feet) or greater
- Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM)
- Any air bag
- Driver steering wheel air bag coil
- Any impact sensor
- Seat belt anchor and/or retractor pretensioners
- Passenger presence module and/or occupant sensor
Disabling Procedure - Air Bag Fuse
- Turn the steering wheel so that the vehicles wheels are pointing straight ahead.
- Place the ignition in the OFF position.
- Locate and remove the fuse(s) supplying power to the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module. Refer to «SIR Schematics»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system) , or «Electrical Center Identification Views»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/electrical-component-locations/#wiring-systems-and-power-management-component-locator-electrical-center-identification-views) .
- Wait 2 minutes before working on the system.
Enabling Procedure - Air Bag Fuse
- Place the ignition in the OFF position.
- Install the fuse(s) supplying power to the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module. Refer to «SIR Schematics»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system) , or «Electrical Center Identification Views»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/electrical-component-locations/#wiring-systems-and-power-management-component-locator-electrical-center-identification-views) .
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. The AIR BAG indicator will illuminate or flash then turn OFF.
- Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle if the AIR BAG warning indicator does not operate as described. Refer to «Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/oem-general-information/#vehicle-diagnostic-information-diagnostic-information-and-procedures) .
Disabling Procedure - Negative Battery Cable
- Turn the steering wheel so that the vehicles wheels are pointing straight ahead.

Removal Procedure
- Disable the SIR. Refer to «SIR Disabling and Enabling»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system__sir-disabling-and-enabling) .
- Raise the vehicle and support. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/hoistjack/#general-information) .
- Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) from the inflatable restraint front end discriminating sensor electrical connector.
- Disconnect the inflatable restraint front end sensor electrical connector.
- Loosen the inflatable restraint front end sensor mounting nut (1).
- Slide the inflatable restraint front end sensor (1) towards the front of the vehicle.
- Remove the sensor (1) from the keyhole slot in the lower radiator support (2).
Installation Procedure
- Remove any dirt, grease, or other impurities from the mounting surface.
- Point the arrow on the sensor toward the front of the vehicle.
- Install the inflatable restraint front end sensor (1) into the keyhole slot in lower radiator support (2).
- Push the sensor towards the rear of the vehicle to seat the sensor in the keyhole slot in the lower radiator support (2). Tighten the nut (1) to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
- Connect the inflatable restraint front end sensor electrical connector.
- Install the CPA to the electrical connector.
- Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle.
- Enable the SIR system. Refer to «SIR Disabling and Enabling»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system__sir-disabling-and-enabling) .

Airbag Vehicle Rollover Sensor Replacement
- Disable the SIR system. Refer to «SIR Disabling and Enabling»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system__sir-disabling-and-enabling) .
- Remove the driver seat. Refer to «Driver or Passenger Seat Removal and Installation»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/seats/#seat-hardware-seat-trim-and-upholstery) .
- Fold back the carpet to access the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM).
- Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) from the SDM electrical connector.
- Disconnect the SDM electrical connector.
- Remove the SDM (2) mounting nuts (1).
- Remove the SDM (2) from the vehicle.
- Repair the studs using the following procedure: Remove and discard the stripped nut. Drill out the weld spots for the weld stud that has been damaged, remove and discard the damaged stud. Condition the floor panel attaching surface where the new stud is to be installed. Install new weld stud GM P/N 115115602 and clamp the weld stud into place. Migweld the stud at the drilled holes. Apply body sealer GM P/N 9984248 around any exposed openings. Install a new nut (1) GM P/N 11515933.
- Remove any dirt, grease, or other impurities from the mounting surface.
- Install the SDM (2) horizontally to the studs.
- Point the arrow on the SDM toward the front of the vehicle.
- Install the SDM mounting nuts (1) and tighten to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
- Install the SDM (2) electrical connector.
- Install the CPA to the SDM electrical connector.
- Install the carpet to cover SDM (2).
- Install the driver seat. Refer to «Driver or Passenger Seat Removal and Installation»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/seats/#seat-hardware-seat-trim-and-upholstery) .
- Enable the SIR system. Refer to «SIR Disabling and Enabling»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system__sir-disabling-and-enabling) .
- Refer to «Control Module References»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems__control-module-references) for programming and setup information.
- Disable the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to «SIR Disabling and Enabling»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system__sir-disabling-and-enabling) .
- Using a blunt-ended tool, push the leaf spring fasteners (2) inward through the access holes. The access holes are located on both sides of the steering wheel shroud.
- Lift and partially remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module from the steering wheel in order to expose the electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the connector-position assurance (CPA) retainers from the electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors from the inflatable restraint steering wheel module.
- Remove the inflatable restraint module from the steering wheel.
- Refer to «Inflatable Restraint Module Handling and Scrapping»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system) .
- Position the inflatable restraint module to the steering wheel.
- Connect the electrical connectors to the inflatable restraint steering wheel module.
- Connect the CPA retainers into the electrical connectors. Seat and lock the connections.
- Position the alignment posts of the inflatable restraint module to the holes that are located on the steering wheel housing.
- Push the inflatable restraint module into the steering wheel in order to engage and in order to latch the 2 leaf spring fasteners (1).
- After installation, pull the sides of the inflatable restraint module in order to ensure that both leaf spring fasteners are engaged.
- Enable the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to «SIR Disabling and Enabling»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system__sir-disabling-and-enabling) .
Special Tools
J-42640 Steering Column Anti-rotation Pin
- Disable the SIR System. Refer to «SIR Disabling and Enabling»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system__sir-disabling-and-enabling) .
- Verify the following: The wheels on the vehicle are straight ahead. The J-42640 pin is installed or the ignition switch is in the LOCK position.
- Remove the steering wheel from the steering shaft. Refer to «Steering Wheel Replacement»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/steering-column-switches/#steering-wheel-and-steering-column) .
- If equipped with a tilt column, pull the tilt lever straight out from the steering column.
- Remove the steering column trim covers. Refer to «Steering Column Trim Cover Replacement»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/steering-column-switches/#steering-wheel-and-steering-column) .
- Remove the wire harness straps from the steering wheel column wire harness.
- Remove the retaining ring (3).
- Remove the SIR coil (4) from the steering shaft.
- Verify the following: The wheels on the vehicle are straight ahead. That the J-42640 pin is installed or the ignition switch is in the LOCK position.
- Ensure the SIR coil is centered. Refer to «Airbag Steering Wheel Module Coil Centering»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system__airbag-steering-wheel-module-coil-centering) .
- Align the SIR coil assembly (1) with the horn tower on the turn signal cancel cam assembly (2).
- Slide the SIR coil (4) onto the steering shaft assembly (2).
- Firmly seat the retaining ring (3) into the groove on the steering shaft assembly (2).
- If a centering tab is on the SIR coil, remove the centering tab. Discard the centering tab.
- Install the steering column trim covers. Refer to «Steering Column Trim Cover Replacement»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/steering-column-switches/#steering-wheel-and-steering-column) .
- If equipped with a tilt column, align the tilt lever into the steering column. Slide the tilt lever handle into the steering column until the handle locks into position.
- Install the steering wheel onto the steering shaft. Refer to «Steering Wheel Replacement»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/steering-column-switches/#steering-wheel-and-steering-column) .
- If you locked the steering column with the J-42640 pin, remove the J-42640 pin.
- Enable the SIR system. Refer to «SIR Disabling and Enabling»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system__sir-disabling-and-enabling) .
Airbag Steering Wheel Module Coil Centering
- Verify the following conditions before centering the SIR coil: The front wheels of the vehicle are in the straight ahead position. The block tooth (1) of the steering shaft assembly is in the 12 o'clock position. The ignition switch is in the LOCK position.
- Remove the wire harness strap or straps where necessary.
- Hold the SIR coil and look at the side with the letters POM (1).
- Rotate the coil hub clockwise until the coil ribbon stops.
- From the clockwise stop, rotate the coil hub slowly counterclockwise approximately 3.3 turns. Place the uplead connector (2) in the 12 o'clock position. Ensure the flat wire cable loop appears in the centering window (4). This is the CENTER position.
- If you have the orange lock pin (3), use the lock pin to lock the SIR coil in the center position. If you do not have the orange lock pin, hold the SIR coil in the center position.
- Align the SIR coil with the horn tower and slide the SIR coil onto the steering shaft assembly.
- If a double wire harness strap is installed onto the wire harness assembly and the column, you must route the wires up against the steering column. One wire harness strap will surround one lead from the coil to the steering column. The other wire harness strap will surround all other leads to the steering column.
- Disable the SIR system. Refer to «SIR Disabling and Enabling»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system__sir-disabling-and-enabling) .
- Remove the right knee bolster bracket. Refer to «Passenger Knee Bolster Bracket Replacement»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#instrument-panel-trim-and-console-trim) .

- Remove the body control module. Refer to «Body Control Module Replacement»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/communication-devices/#data-communication-system) .
- Disconnect the instrument panel inflatable restraint module electrical connector.
- Remove the upper bolts (3) from the instrument panel inflatable restraint module (1).
- Remove the lower bolts (2) from the instrument panel inflatable restraint module (1).
- Remove the instrument panel inflatable restraint module (1).
- Refer to «Inflatable Restraint Module Handling and Scrapping»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system) .
- Install the inflatable restraint I/P module (1) to the instrument panel inflatable restraint carrier.
- Install the lower bolts (2) hand tight.
- Install the lower bolts (3) to the inflatable restraint instrument panel inflatable restraint module and tighten to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
- Connect the electrical connector to the instrument panel inflatable restraint module.
- Install the right knee bolster bracket. Refer to «Passenger Knee Bolster Bracket Replacement»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#instrument-panel-trim-and-console-trim) .
- Install the body control module. Refer to «Body Control Module Replacement»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/communication-devices/#data-communication-system) .
- Install the instrument panel trim pad. Refer to «Instrument Panel Trim Pad Replacement»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#instrument-panel-trim-and-console-trim) .
- Enable the SIR system. Refer to «SIR Disabling and Enabling»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system__sir-disabling-and-enabling) .
- Remove the seat from the vehicle. Refer to «Driver or Passenger Seat Removal and Installation»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/seats/#seat-hardware-seat-trim-and-upholstery) .
- Disconnect the electrical connector from the seat position sensor.
- Drill out the rivets that retain the seat position sensor (1) to the seat adjuster track bracket.
- Remove the seat position sensor from the seat adjuster track bracket.
- Install the seat position sensor to the seat adjuster bracket.
- Install the rivets that retain the seat position sensor (1) to the seat adjuster track bracket.
- Connect the electrical connector to the seat position sensor.
- Install the passenger seat to the vehicle. Refer to «Driver or Passenger Seat Removal and Installation»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/seats/#seat-hardware-seat-trim-and-upholstery) .

Accident With or Without Air Bag Deployment - Component Inspections
| WARNING | Proper operation of the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) sensing system requires that any repairs to the vehicle structure return the vehicle structure to the original production configuration. Not properly repairing the vehicle structure could cause non-deployment of the air bag(s) in a frontal collision or deployment of the air bag(s) for conditions less severe than intended. |
After any collision, inspect the following components as indicated. If you detect any damage, replace the component. If you detect any damage to the mounting points or mounting hardware, repair the component or replace the hardware as needed.
- The steering column-Inspect the steering column for bending, twisting, buckling or any type of damage.
- The instrument panel knee bolsters and mounting points-Inspect the knee bolsters for bending, twisting, buckling, or any other type of damage.
- The instrument panel brackets, braces, etc.-Inspect for bending, twisting, buckling, or any other type of damage.
- The seat belts-Perform the seat belt operational and functional checks. Refer to «Repairs and Inspections Required After a Collision»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/restraints-control-systems/#seat-belt-system__repairs-and-inspections-required-after-a) .
- The instrument panel cross car beam-Inspect for bending, twisting, buckling, or any other type of damage.

- The seats and seat mounting points-Inspect for bending, twisting, buckling, or any other type of damage.
- The roof and headliner mounting points.
- The brake pedal --Inspect the brake pedal for bending, twisting, buckling or any type of damage.
Accident With Frontal Air Bag Deployment - Component Replacement and Inspections
After a collision involving air bag deployment, replace the following components.
- Driver Steering Wheel Air Bag
- Passenger instrument panel air bag, if deployed
- Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM), if the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module has set DTC B0052 and will not clear
- Front and/or Side Impact Sensors
- Driver/Passenger Seat Side Air Bag, if deployed
- Seat back cover if Side Seat Air Bag is deployed
- Driver/Passenger Seat Belt Anchor and/or Retractor Pretensioners
Perform additional inspections on the following components.

Accident With Side Seat Air Bag Deployment - Component Replacement and Inspections
After a collision involving driver/passenger side seat air bag deployment, replace the following components.
- Left/right side impact sensors on the side of the impact.
- Left/right roof rail air bag on the side of the impact.
- Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM), if the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module has set DTC B0052 and will not clear.
- Inflatable Restraint Seat Belt Anchor and/or Retractor Pretensioner.
- Driver or passenger seat back cushion cover replacement.
| WARNING | Do not repair or replace the seat stitching or seams in the seat back trim cover with an internal mounted seat side airbag module. Replace the complete seat back trim cover from the OEM. Non-OEM seat stitching may cause improper airbag deployment which could result in personal injury. |

Accident With Seat Belt Pretensioner Deployment Only - Component Replacement and Inspections
After a collision involving driver/passenger Seat Belt Retractor or Anchor Pretensioner deployment, replace the following components.
- Driver and Passenger Inflatable restraint seat belt anchor pretensioner and/or retractor pretensioner
- Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM), if the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module has set DTC B0052 and will not clear
Perform additional inspections for any damage and repair or replace each component as needed on the following components.
- Mounting points or mounting hardware for the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module
- Mounting points or mounting hardware for the Seat Belt Anchor Pretensioners
- Mounting points or mounting hardware for the Seat Belt Retractor Pretensioners
Impact Sensor Replacement Guidelines
The impact sensor replacement policy requires replacing sensors in the area of the accident damage. The area of accident damage is defined as the portion of the vehicle which is crushed, bent, or damaged due to a collision. An example of this would be a moderate collision where the front of the vehicle impacts a object. If the vehicle has an impact sensor mounted forward of the radiator, it must be replaced.
- Replace the impact sensor whether or not the air bags have deployed.
- Replace the impact sensor even if it appears to be undamaged.
Impact sensor damage which is not visible, such as slight bending of the mounting bracket or cuts in the wire insulation, can cause improper operation of the SIR system. Do not try to determine whether the impact sensor is undamaged, replace the impact sensor. Also, if you follow a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) procedure and a malfunctioning impact sensor is indicated, replace the impact sensor.
Live and Undeployed Inflator Module

Take special care when handling or storing an undeployed inflator module. An inflator module deployment produces a rapid generation of gas. This may cause the inflator module, or an object in front of the inflator module, to project through the air in the event of an unlikely deployment.
Dual Stage Inflator Module
Dual stage inflator modules have 2 deployment stages. If stage 1 was used to deploy a dual stage inflator module, stage 2 may still be active. Therefore, a deployed dual stage inflator module must be treated as an active module. If disposal of a dual stage module is required, both deployment loops must be energized to deploy the air bag.
Scrapping Procedure
During the course of a vehicles useful life, certain situations may arise which will require the disposal of a live and undeployed inflator module. Do NOT dispose a live and undeployed inflator module through normal disposal channels until the inflator module has been deployed.
Do not deploy the inflator module in the following situations
- After replacement of an inflator module under warranty-the inflator module may need to be returned undeployed to the manufacturer.
- If the vehicle is the subject of a Product Liability report, GM-1241, related to the SIR system and is subject to a preliminary investigation-do NOT alter the SIR system in any manner.
- If the vehicle is involved in a campaign affecting the inflator modules-follow the instructions in the Campaign Service Bulletin for proper SIR handling procedures.
Deployment Procedures
You can deploy the inflator module either inside or outside of the vehicle. The method used depends upon the final disposition of the vehicle. Review the following procedures in order to determine which will work best in a given situation
Deployment Outside Vehicle - Steering Wheel Module, I/P Module, and Roof Rail Module
Deploy the inflator module outside of the vehicle when the vehicle will be returned to service. Situations that require deployment outside of the vehicle include the following
- Using the SIR diagnostics, you determine that the inflator module is malfunctioning.
- The inflator module is cosmetically damaged, scratched, or ripped.
- The inflator module pigtail is damaged.
- The inflator module connector is damaged.
- The inflator module connector terminals are damaged.
Deployment and disposal of a malfunctioning inflator module is subject to any required retention period.

- Turn OFF the ignition.
- Remove the ignition key.
- Put on safety glasses.
- Remove the inflator module. If you are removing the steering wheel module, refer to «Airbag Steering Wheel Module Replacement»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system) . If you are removing the I/P module, refer to «Airbag Instrument Panel Module Replacement»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system) . If you are removing a roof rail module, refer to «Airbag Roof Side Rail Module Replacement (without YA2)»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system) .
- Place the inflator module on a work bench, with the vinyl trim cover facing up and away from the surface.
- Clear a space on the ground about 1.85 m (6 ft) in diameter for deployment of the inflator module or deployment fixture. If possible, use a paved, outdoor location free of activity. Otherwise, use a space free of activity on the shop floor. Ensure you have sufficient ventilation.
- Clear the area of loose or flammable objects.
- If you are deploying a steering wheel inflator module, place the inflator module in the center of the space.
- When deploying an I/P inflator module, perform the following instructions: Place the J 39401-B SIR deployment fixture in the center of the cleared area. Fill the deployment fixture with water or sand. Using the proper nuts and bolts, mount the I/P module (1) to the deployment fixture (2), with the vinyl trim facing up. Securely tighten all fasteners that hold the I/P module (1) to the deployment fixture (2).
- When deploying a roof rail module, perform the following instructions: Place the J 39401-B SIR deployment fixture (3) in the center of the cleared area. Fill the deployment fixture with water or sand to provide sufficient stabilization of fixture during deployment. Adjust and secure the fixture arms (4) to the deployment fixture (3), using the proper nuts and bolts. Attach the roof rail module in the deployment fixture and securely tighten all fasteners.
- Inspect the SIR deployment harness and the appropriate pigtail adapter (2) for damage. Replace as needed.
- Short the 2 SIR deployment harness leads (1) together using one banana plug seated into the other.
- Connect the appropriate pigtail adapter (2) to the SIR deployment harness (1).
- Extend the SIR deployment harness and adapter to the full length from the deployment fixture or area.
- Connect the inflator module (1) to the adapter (2) on the SIR deployment harness (3).
- Clear the area of people.
- Separate the 2 banana plugs on the SIR deployment harness that were shorted together earlier in the procedure.
- Place a 12-volt minimum/2-amp minimum power source, such as a vehicle battery, near the shorted end of the harness.
- Connect the SIR deployment harness wires to the power source. Deployment of the inflator module will occur when contact is made.
- Disconnect the SIR deployment harness from the power source after the inflator module deploys.
- If the inflator module did not deploy, disconnect the adapter and discontinue the procedure and contact the Technical Assistance Group. If deployment was successful, proceed to the following steps.
- Seat one banana plug into the other in order to short the deployment harness leads.
- Put on a pair of shop gloves.
- Disconnect the pigtail adapter from the inflator module as soon as possible.
- Inspect the pigtail adapter and the SIR deployment harness. Replace as needed.
- Dispose of the deployed inflator module through normal refuse channels.
- Wash your hands with a mild soap.
Deployment Inside Vehicle - Vehicle Scrapping Procedure
Deploy the inflator modules inside of the vehicle when destroying the vehicle or when salvaging the vehicle for parts. This includes, but is not limited to, the following situations
- The vehicle has completed all useful life.
- Irreparable damage occurred to the vehicle in a non-deployment type accident.
- Irreparable damage occurred to the vehicle during a theft.
- The vehicle is being salvaged for parts to be used on a vehicle with a different VIN, as opposed to rebuilding as the same VIN.

- Lower the driver and passenger windows.
- Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and remove the ignition key.
- Check that all inflator modules which will be deployed are mounted securely. Driver inflator module is secured to the steering wheel. Passenger inflator module is secured to the instrument panel. Left roof rail inflator module is secured to the left roof rail. Right roof rail inflator module is secured to the right roof rail.
- Put on safety glasses.
- Remove all loose objects from the front seats.
- Disconnect the steering wheel module yellow connector (1) from vehicle harness yellow connector (2).
- Cut the yellow harness connector out of the vehicle, leaving at least 16 cm (6 in) of wire at the connector.
- Strip 13 mm (0.5 in) of insulation from each of the connector wire leads.
- Cut two 6.1 m (20 ft) deployment wires from a 0.8 mm (18 gauge) or thicker multi-strand wire. Use these wires to fabricate the driver deployment harness.
- Strip 13 mm (0.5 in) of insulation from both ends of the wires.
- Twist together one end from each of the wires in order to short the wires. Deployment wires shall remain shorted, and not connected to a power source until you are ready to deploy the inflator module.
- Twist together the 2 connector wire leads from the high circuits from both stages of the steering wheel module, to one set of deployment wires. Refer to «COMPONENT CONNECTOR END VIEWS - INDEX»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/body-electrical/#wiring-systems-and-power-management-component-connector-end-views-index) in order to determine the correct circuits.
- Inspect that the 3-wire connection is secure.
- Bend flat the twisted connection.
- Secure and insulate the 3-wire connection to the deployment harness using electrical tape.
- Twist together the 2 connector wire leads from the low circuits from both stages of the steering wheel module, to one set of deployment wires. Refer to «COMPONENT CONNECTOR END VIEWS - INDEX»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/body-electrical/#wiring-systems-and-power-management-component-connector-end-views-index) in order to determine the correct circuits.
- Inspect that the 3-wire connection is secure.
- Bend flat the twisted connection.
- Secure and insulate the 3-wire connection to the deployment harness using electrical tape.
- Connect the deployment harness to the connector on the steering wheel module.
- Route the deployment harness out of the driver side of the vehicle.
- Disconnect the yellow left roof rail harness connector from the vehicle harness connector.
- Cut the harness connector out of the vehicle, leaving at least 16 cm (6 in) of wire at the connector.
- Strip 13 mm (0.5 in) of insulation from each of the connector wire leads.
- Cut two 6.1 m (20 ft) deployment wires from a 0.8 mm (18 gauge) or thicker multi-strand wire. These wires will be used to fabricate the roof rail air bag deployment harness.
- Strip 13 mm (0.5 in) of insulation from both ends of the wires.
- Twist together one end from each of the wires in order to short the wires.
- Twist together one connector wire lead to one deployment wire.
- Bend flat the twisted connection.
- Secure and insulate the connection using electrical tape.
- Twist together, bend, and tape the remaining connector wire lead to the remaining deployment wire.
- Connect the deployment harness to the yellow connector of the roof rail module.
- Route the deployment harness out of the driver side of the vehicle.
- Disconnect the I/P module yellow harness connector (1) from the vehicle harness connector (2).
- Cut the yellow harness connector out of the vehicle, leaving at least 16 cm (6 in) of wire at the connector.
- Strip 13 mm (0.5 in) of insulation from each of the connector wire leads.
- Cut two 6.1 m (20 ft) deployment wires from a 0.8 mm (18 gauge) or thicker multi-strand wire. These wires will be used to fabricate the passenger deployment harness.
- Strip 13 mm (0.5 in) of insulation from both ends of the wires.
- Twist together one end from each of the wires in order to short the wires.
- Twist together the 2 connector wire leads from the high circuits from both stages of the I/P module to one set of deployment wires. Refer to «COMPONENT CONNECTOR END VIEWS - INDEX»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/body-electrical/#wiring-systems-and-power-management-component-connector-end-views-index) in order to determine the correct circuits.
- Inspect that the 3-wire connection is secure.

- Route the deployment harness out of the passenger side of the vehicle.
- Disconnect the yellow harness connector to the right roof rail air bag from the vehicle harness connector.
- Cut the harness connector out of the vehicle, leaving at least 16 cm (6 in) of wire at the connector.
- Strip 13 mm (0.5 in) of insulation from each of the connector wire leads.
- Cut two 6.1 m (20 ft) deployment wires from a 0.8 mm (18 gauge) or thicker multi-strand wire. These wires will be used to fabricate the roof rail module deployment harness.
- Strip 13 mm (0.5 in) of insulation from both ends of the wires.
- Twist together one end from each of the wires in order to short the wires.
- Twist together one connector wire lead to one deployment wire.
- Bend flat the twisted connection.
- Secure and insulate the connection using electrical tape.
- Twist together, bend, and tape the remaining connector wire lead to the remaining deployment wire.
- Connect the deployment harness to the roof rail module yellow connector.
- Route the deployment harness out of the passenger side of the vehicle.
- Completely cover the windshield and the front door window openings with a drop cloth.
- Stretch to the full length all of the deployment harness wires on the right side of the vehicle.
- Deploy each deployment loop one at a time.
- Place a power source, 12 V minimum/2 A minimum, such as a vehicle battery, near the shorted end of the harnesses.
- Separate one set of wires and touch the wire ends to the power source in order to deploy the selected inflator module.
- Disconnect the deployment harness from the power source and twist the wire ends together.
- Continue the same process with the remaining deployment harnesses.
- Stretch to the full length all of the deployment harness wires on the left side of the vehicle.
- Deploy each deployment loop one at a time.
- Place a power source, 12 V minimum/2 A minimum, such as a vehicle battery, near the shorted end of the harnesses.
- Separate one set of wires and touch the wires ends to the power source in order to deploy the selected inflator modules.
- Disconnect the deployment harness from the power source and twist the wire ends together.
- Continue the same process with the remaining deployment harnesses.
- Remove the drop cloth from the vehicle.
- Disconnect all harnesses from the vehicle.
- Discard the harnesses.
- Scrap the vehicle in the same manner as a non-SIR equipped vehicle.

Pretensioner Handling and Scrapping
| WARNING | When carrying an undeployed inflatable restraint seat belt pretensioner: Do not carry the seat belt pretensioner by the wires or connector. Carry the seat belt pretensioner by the piston tube, keeping hands and fingers away from the cable. Make sure the open end of the seat belt pretensioner piston tube points away from you and other people. Do not cover the seat belt pretensioner piston tube opening with your hand. Failure to observe these guidelines may result in personal injury. |
During the course of a vehicles useful life, certain situations may arise which will require the disposal of a live and undeployed seat belt pretensioner. Do not dispose of a live and undeployed seat belt pretensioner through normal disposal channels until the seat belt pretensioner has been deployed. The following information covers the proper procedures for disposing of a live and undeployed seat belt pretensioner. Do not deploy the seat belt pretensioner in the following situations
- After replacement of a seat belt pretensioner under warranty. The seat belt pretensioner may need to be returned undeployed to the manufacturer.
- If the vehicle is the subject of a Product Liability report, GM1241, related to the SIR system or the seat belt system. If the vehicle is subject to the Product Liability report, do not alter the SIR or seat belt system in any manner.
- If the vehicle is involved in a campaign affecting the seat belt pretensioners. Follow the instructions in the Campaign Service Bulletin for proper SIR handling procedures.
The seat belt pretensioner can be deployed inside or outside of the vehicle. The method used depends upon the final disposition of the vehicle. Review the following procedures in order to determine which will work best in a given situation.
Deployment Outside Vehicle for Seat Belt Pretensioners
Deploy the seat belt pretensioners outside of the vehicle when the vehicle will be returned to service. Situations that require deployment outside of the vehicle include the following
- Using the SIR diagnostics, it is determined that the seat belt pretensioner is malfunctioning.
- The seat belt pretensioner pigtail, if equipped, is damaged.
- The seat belt pretensioner connector is damaged.
- The seat belt pretensioner connector terminals are damaged.

- When carrying a seat belt pretensioner to the deployment area, keep fingers clear of the seat belt webbing.
- Clear a space on the ground about 1.85 m (6 ft) in diameter for deployment of the seat belt pretensioner. If possible, use a paved, outdoor location free of activity. Otherwise, use a space free of activity on the shop floor. Make sure you have sufficient ventilation.
- Make sure no loose or flammable objects are in the area.
- Place the J 39401-B SIR deployment fixture in the center of the cleared area.
- Fill the fixture plastic reservoir with water or sand.
- Mount the seat belt pretensioner (1) in the SIR deployment fixture (3) with the open end facing up using the following mounting method. Adjust and secure the J 39401-B SIR deployment fixture arms (4) to the deployment fixture. To mount, use the proper size bolt (2) and nut (5) with washers in order to secure the seat belt pretensioner (1) to the deployment fixture brackets. Securely tighten all fasteners prior to deployment.
- Inspect the J 38826 SIR deployment harness and the appropriate pigtail adapter for damage. Replace as needed.
- Short the 2 SIR deployment harness (1) leads together using 1 banana plug seated into the other.
- Connect the appropriate pigtail adapter (2) to the SIR deployment harness.
- Extend the SIR deployment harness and adapter to full length from the deployment fixture.
- Connect the seat belt pretensioner connector (1) to the adapter (2) on the deployment harness (3).
- Clear the area of people.
- Separate the 2 banana plugs on the SIR deployment harness.
- Place a 12 volt minimum/2 amp minimum power source, such as a vehicle battery, near the shorted end of the harness.
- Connect the SIR deployment harness wires to the power source. Seat belt pretensioner deployment will occur when contact is made.
- Disconnect the SIR deployment harness from the power source after the seat belt pretensioner deploys.
- Seat one banana plug into the other in order to short the deployment harness leads.
- If the seat pretensioner did not deploy, disconnect the adapter and discontinue the procedure. Contact the Technical Assistance Group. Otherwise, proceed to the following steps.
- Put on a pair of shop gloves.
- Disconnect the pigtail adapter from the seat belt pretensioner as soon as possible.
- Dispose of the deployed seat belt pretensioner through normal refuse channels.

- Cut two 6.1 m (20 ft) deployment wires from a 0.8 mm (18 gauge) or thicker multi-strand wire. These wires will be used for the seat belt pretensioner deployment harness.
- Strip 13 mm (0.5 in) of insulation from both ends of the wires cut in the previous step.
- Twist together one end from each of the wires in order to short the wires. Deployment wires shall remain shorted, and not connected to a power source until you are ready to deploy the seat belt pretensioner.
- Twist together one connector wire lead to one deployment wire.
- Inspect that the previous connections is secure.
- Bend flat the twisted connection.
- Secure and insulate the connection using electrical tape.
- Twist together, bend, and tape the remaining connector wire lead to the remaining deployment wire.
- Connect the deployment harness to the seat belt pretensioner connector.
- Route the deployment harness out of the driver side of the vehicle.
- Disconnect the seat belt pretensioner connector. Refer to «Seat Belt Buckle Pretensioner Replacement»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system) .
- Cut the seat belt pretensioner connector out of the vehicle, leaving at least 16 cm (6 in) of wire at the connector.
- Strip 13 mm (0.5 in) of insulation from each of the connector wire leads.
- Cut two 6.1 m (20 ft) deployment wires from a 0.8 mm (18 gauge) or thicker multi-strand wire. These wires will be used for the seat belt pretensioner deployment harness.
- Strip 13 mm (0.5 in) of insulation from both ends of the wires cut in the previous step.
- Twist together one end from each of the wires in order to short the wires. The deployment wires are to remain shorted, and not connected to a power source until you are ready to deploy the seat belt pretensioner.
- Twist together one connector wire lead to one deployment wire.
- Inspect that the previous connection is secure.
- Bend flat the twisted connection.
- Secure and insulate the connection using electrical tape.
- Twist together, bend, and tape the remaining connector wire lead to the remaining deployment wire.
- Connect the deployment harness to the seat belt pretensioner connector.
- Route the deployment harness out of the passenger's side of the vehicle.
- Completely cover the windshield and the front door openings with a drop cloth.
- Deploy each deployment loop one at a time.
- Stretch out all of the deployment harness wires on the left and right side of the vehicle to their full length.
- Place a power source, 12 volt minimum/2 amp minimum, such as a vehicle battery, near the shorted end of the harnesses.
- Separate one set of wires and touch the wire ends to the power source in order to deploy the seat belt pretensioners.
- Disconnect the deployment harness from the power source and twist the wire ends together.
- Continue the same process with the remaining deployment harnesses that are available.
- Remove the drop cloth from the vehicle.
- Disconnect all harnesses from the vehicle.
- Discard the harnesses.
- Scrap the vehicle in the same manner as a non-SIR equipped vehicle.
- If one or more of the seat belt pretensioners did not deploy, perform the following steps to remove the undeployed seat belt pretensioner from the vehicle, refer to «Seat Belt Buckle Pretensioner Replacement»(/chevrolet/express-g2500/2013-2013/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system) .
- Call the Technical Assistance Group for further assistance.
SIR System Overview
The supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) system supplements the protection offered by the seat belts. The SIR system contains an Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM), air bags, seat belt pretensioners (buckle), and impact sensors. The Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module determines the severity of a collision with the assistance of impact sensors located at strategic points on the vehicle. When the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module detects a collision, the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module will process the information provided by the sensors to further support air bag or pretensioner deployment. The Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module will deploy the air bags and pretensioners if it detects a collision of sufficient force. If the force of the impact is not sufficient to warrant air bag deployment, the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module may still deploy the seat belt pretensioners. The Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module contains a sensing device that converts vehicle velocity changes to an electrical signal. The Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module compares these signals to values stored in memory. If the signals exceed a stored value, the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module will determine the severity of the impact and either cause current to flow through the frontal deployment loops deploying the frontal air bags and pretensioners, or it will deploy the pretensioners only. The Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module continuously monitors the deployment loops for malfunctions and illuminates the SIR system AIR BAG indicator if a fault is detected. The Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module performs continuous diagnostic monitoring of the SIR system electrical components. Upon detection of a circuit malfunction, the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module will set a DTC and inform the driver by illuminating the SIR system AIR BAG indicator. The steering column and knee bolsters are designed to absorb energy and compress during frontal collisions in order to limit leg movement and decrease the chance of injury to the driver and passenger.
SIR System AIR BAG Indicator
The SIR system AIR BAG indicator, located in the instrument cluster, is used to notify the driver of SIR system malfunctions and to verify that the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) is communicating with the instrument cluster. When the ignition is turned ON, the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module is supplied with ignition positive voltage. The instrument cluster will momentarily turn on the SIR system AIR BAG indicator. While the indicator is on, the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module conducts tests on all SIR system components and circuits. If no malfunctions are detected the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module will communicate with the instrument cluster through the serial data circuit and command the SIR system AIR BAG indicator OFF. The Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module provides continuous monitoring of the air bag circuits by conducting a sequence of checks. If a malfunction is detected the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module will store a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) and command the instrument cluster to illuminate the SIR system AIR BAG indicator via serial data. The presence of a SIR system malfunction could result in non-deployment of the air bags or deployment in conditions less severe than intended. The SIR system AIR BAG indicator will remain ON until the malfunction has been repaired.
Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM)
The Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) is a microprocessor and the control center for the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) system. The Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module contains internal sensors along with external impact sensors, mounted at strategic locations on the vehicle. In the event of a collision, the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module compares the signals from the internal and external impact sensors to a value stored in memory. When the generated signals exceed the stored value, the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module will cause current to flow through the appropriate deployment loops to deploy the air bags. The Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module records the SIR system status when a deployment occurs and illuminates the SIR system AIR BAG indicator located in the instrument cluster. The Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module performs continuous diagnostic monitoring of the SIR system electrical components and circuitry when the ignition is turned ON. If the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module detects a malfunction, a DTC will be stored and the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module will request the instrument cluster to illuminate the AIR BAG indicator, notifying the driver that a malfunction exists. In the event that ignition positive voltage is lost during a collision, the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module maintains a 23-volt loop reserve for deployment of the air bags. It is important when disabling the SIR system for servicing or rescue operations to allow the 23-volt loop reserve to dissipate, which could take up to 1 minute.
Air Bags
This vehicle contains 5 air bags. The 5 air bags are located in the driver steering wheel (dual air bags), passenger instrument panel (passenger side) (dual air bags), left roof rail, right roof rail, and right rear roof rail. To view the locations of the air bags refer to SIR Identification Views . Air bags contain a housing, inflatable air bag, two initiating devices (if dual air bags), canister of gas generating material and, in some cases, stored compressed gas. The deployment loops supply current to deploy the air bags. The steering wheel and passenger instrument panel air bags have two stages of deployment, which varies the amount of restraint to the occupant according to the collision severity. For moderate frontal collisions the air bags deploy at less than full deployment which consists of stage 1 of the air bag. For more severe frontal collisions a full deployment is initiated which consists of stage 1 and stage 2 of the air bag. The current passing through the air bags ignite the material in the canister producing a rapid generation of gas and is some cases, the release of compressed gas. The gas produced from this reaction rapidly inflates the air bag. Once the air bag is inflated it quickly deflates through the air bag vent holes and/or the bag fabric. A shorting bar (if equipped) is located in the connector.
Seat Belt Pretensioners (Buckle)
The seat belt pretensioners (driver and passenger) consist of a housing, seat belt buckle (pretensioner), seat belt webbing, an initiator, and a canister of gas generating materials. To view the locations of the seat belt pretentioners refer to SIR Identification Views . The initiator is part of the seat belt pretensioner deployment loop. When the vehicle is involved in a collision of sufficient force, the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module causes current to flow through the seat belt deployment loops to the initiator. Current passing through the initiator ignites the material in the canister producing a rapid generation of gas. The gas produced from this reaction deploys the seat belt pretensioners which removes all of the slack in the seat belts. Depending on the severity of the collision, the seat belt pretensioners may deploy without the front air bags deploying, or they will deploy immediately before the front air bags deploy. A shorting bar (if equipped) is located in the connector.
Impact Sensors
This vehicle contains anywhere from 3-5 impact sensors depending on option content. The options are as follows
- Light Duty has 5 impact sensors: 1 in the front, 2 in the doors, 2 in the body
- Heavy Duty Regular Cab has 3 impact sensors: 1 in the front, 2 in the doors
To view the locations of the impact sensors refer to SIR Identification Views . The impact sensors contain a sensing device which monitors vehicle acceleration and velocity changes to detect side collisions that are severe enough to warrant air bag deployment. The impact sensors are not part of the deployment loop, but instead provide input to the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module. The Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module contains a microprocessor that performs calculations using the measured accelerations and compares these calculations to a value stored in memory. When the generated calculations exceed the stored value, the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module will cause current to flow through the deployment loops deploying the appropriate air bags.
Seat Position Sensors
The seat position sensors are used to determine the proximity of a front driver or passenger seat position with respect to the front air bag. Each seat position sensor interfaces with the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM). The state of the seat position sensor allows the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module to disable stage 2 of the front air bag for a front seat that is forward of the forward/rearward point in the seat track travel. The seat position sensor is a hall effect sensor that is mounted on the outboard seat track of the driver and passenger seats. The seat track includes a metal bracket that shunts the seat position sensor magnetic circuit creating 2 states of seat position, the shunted state represents a rearward seat position and the non-shunted state represents a forward position. The seat position sensor provides 2 current ranges, one range for the shunted state and a second range for a non-shunted state which are inputs to the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module. When the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module receives input from a seat position sensor that state 1 threshold is reached (seat is rearward), the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module will enable stage 2 deployment. When state 2 threshold is reached (seat is forward), the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module will disable stage 2 deployment on the side the seat is forward.
Passenger Presence Detection System and Passenger Air Bag Indicator
Note. The passenger presence system (PPS) is a calibrated unit. When replacing the assembly all parts in the service kit must remain together. Do not mix any of the old parts with the new parts. After repairing or replacing the PPS, the preload test must be performed in order to function properly.
The passenger presence system is used to monitor the type of occupant that is sitting in the front passenger seat and communicate the status to the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM). The Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module then uses this information to determine whether to enable or suppress the deployment of the passenger instrument panel air bag. The passenger presence system consists of an electronic control module, a sensor mat in the seat, a harness, and PASSENGER AIR BAG ON/OFF indicators. The passenger presence system transmits and receives a low-level electric field. The measured capacitance value of this field is used to determine the type of occupant sitting in the front passenger seat. If the measured capacitance is less than a calibrated value, then the passenger presence module will send a serial data signal to the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module to disable the passenger instrument panel air bag. If the measured capacitance is greater than a calibrated value, then the passenger presence module will send a serial data signal to the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module to enable the passenger instrument panel air bag. The Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module will notify the customer of the enable/disable status by illuminating one of the PASSENGER AIR BAG ON/OFF indicator. The passenger presence system monitors itself for faults and will displays diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) on the scan tool. When a fault is detected, the passenger presence module sends out a message to the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module. The Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module responds by sending a command message to the IPC to illuminate the SIR system AIR BAG indicator.
Vehicle Roll Over Sensor
The vehicle roll over sensor is used to supplement the side Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. The Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) uses the input from the vehicle roll over sensor to assist in determining the severity of a vehicle roll over or near roll over condition. If the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module determines a deployment is warranted, the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module will cause current to flow through the deployment loops deploying the roof rail air bags.
Seat Belt Indicators
The seat belt indicators are controlled through the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM). For further information on seat belt indicators refer to Seat Belt System Description and Operation
