Power Windows Chevrolet Corvette C4

DESCRIPTION

Power window system uses reversible permanent magnet motor to operate each window. Motor operation is controlled by a master switch assembly alone or in combination with individual window switches. Window is lifted or lowered depending on polarity of current applied to window motor.

OPERATION

When ignition switch is in RUN position, power for window system is supplied to master switch assembly through fuse block 30-amp circuit breaker and Delayed Accessory Bus (DAB) relay, located below left side of I/P.

When a switch is operated, power and ground paths are supplied, through the related window switch, to motor. Each motor raises or lowers window. Motors are driven by two wires; one for power and one for ground, depending on switch position. Each motor is protected by an internal circuit breaker which will reset after breaker cools.

SYSTEM CHECK

  1. Before beginning system check, turn ignition on. Ensure there is battery voltage from PWR WDO (30-amp) circuit breaker, located in fuse block. Ensure master switch ground circuit is complete.
  2. With all windows closed, turn ignition switch to RUN position. Briefly (less than .3 second) press left front window switch down. Window should descend a small distance, then stop.
  3. Press left front window switch down and release (more than .3 second). Window should descend a small distance, then stop.
  4. Press left front window switch up. Window should raise as long as switch is held up, then stop when switch is released (no express). Repeat step 3). While window is moving down in express mode, press switch upward. Window should stop express decent.
  5. Lower and raise other windows from master switch. All windows should operate quietly and smoothly through full range of travel.
  6. Lower and raise each window from window switches. All windows should operate quietly and smoothly through full range of travel. Note any symptoms and proceed to SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS.

TESTING

Note. To identify specific circuits, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .

TEST 1

  1. Disconnect LH window switch connector. Connect test light between terminal "G" of connector and ground. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/chevrolet/corvette/c4-1984-1998/remont/windows/#power-windows) . Turn ignition to RUN. If test light lights, go to next step. If test light does not light, check for open or short in Pink wire between switch connector and power window circuit breaker, and check for open in power window circuit breaker.
  2. Measure voltage between master switch connector terminal "G" (positive) and connector terminal "F" (negative). If battery voltage is present, replace LH window switch. If battery voltage is not present, repair open in Black wire between master switch connector terminal "F" and ground. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/chevrolet/corvette/c4-1984-1998/remont/windows/#power-windows) .

TEST 2

  1. Disconnect LH window motor connector. Turn ignition to RUN position, connect a test light between LH motor connector terminal "A" (Dark Blue wire) and ground. Then connect a test light between LH motor connector terminal "B" (Brown wire) and ground. If test light illuminates in both cases, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate in one or both cases, check for open in dark blue or brown wire.
  2. Connect test light between LH window motor connector terminals "A" and "B". Test light should illuminate when LH window switch is moved to UP position or DOWN position. If test light illuminates as specified, replace LH window motor. If test light does not illuminate as specified, replace LH window switch.

TEST 3

  1. Disconnect RH window switch connector C1. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/chevrolet/corvette/c4-1984-1998/remont/windows/#power-windows) . Turn ignition ON, and connect a test light between switch connector terminal "A" (Dark Blue/White wire) and ground. Test light should illuminate. Then connect a test light between switch connector terminal "B" (Tan wire) and ground. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/chevrolet/corvette/c4-1984-1998/remont/windows/#power-windows) . Test light should illuminate. If test light illuminates in both cases, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate in both cases, check for open in dark blue/white or tan wires between LH and RH window switches.
  2. Connect test light between RH window switch connector terminals "A" and "B". See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/chevrolet/corvette/c4-1984-1998/remont/windows/#power-windows) . Test light should illuminate when LH switch is moved to UP position or DOWN position. If test light illuminates as specified, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate as specified, replace LH power window switch.
  3. Reconnect RH power window switch connector. Disconnect RH window motor connector. Connect test light between motor connector terminals "A" (Tan wire) and ground. Test light should illuminate. Connect test light between motor connector terminal "B" (Dark Blue/White wire) and ground. Test light should illuminate. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/chevrolet/corvette/c4-1984-1998/remont/windows/#power-windows) . If test light illuminates as specified, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate as specified, check for open in dark blue/ white or tan wires between RH window switch and RH window motor. If wires are okay, replace RH window switch.
  4. Connect test light between RH window motor connector terminals "A" and "B". See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/chevrolet/corvette/c4-1984-1998/remont/windows/#power-windows) . Test light should illuminate when RH window switch is moved to UP position or DOWN position. If test light illuminates as specified, replace RH window motor. If test light does not illuminate as specified, go to next step.
  5. Connect test light between RH window switch connector C@ terminals "B" (Black wire) and "C" (Gray wire). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/chevrolet/corvette/c4-1984-1998/remont/windows/#power-windows) . If test light illuminates, replace RH window switch. If test light does not illuminate, repair open ground circuit between RH window switch connector C2 terminal "C" (Black wire) and left kick panel. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/chevrolet/corvette/c4-1984-1998/remont/windows/#power-windows) .

Removal & Installation

  1. Raise window to full up position and secure in place. Remove door panel covering and insulator. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove courtesy lamp by rotating down and out, and disconnect wires. Remove accessory plate screws and accessory plate. (Scheme 1)
  2. Remove rods from lock and inside handle. Remove accessory mounting plate screws and lower assembly into door to clear upper edge of door, and remove assembly. (Scheme 2)
  3. Connect window switch, and move window into position to access nuts securing window to regulator. Scribe marks and remove upper regulator retaining bolts. Remove window. (Scheme 3) Reinstall in reverse order. Tighten window nuts to 70 In. Lbs.
