Headlight Doors - Automatic Chevrolet Corvette C4

Headlight Doors 7 illustrations ~335 words

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

Headlight doors are actuated by reversible electric motors, mounted near each headlight door. Battery voltage is applied at all times to terminals "B" and "E" of Headlight Door Module (HDM) 5-pin connector. (Scheme 1) Module also has a 4-pin connector, supplying output voltage to door motors.

Scheme 1: DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

Depending on model and headlight switch position (or daytime running lights module, if equipped), battery voltage is applied to terminals "A" and "C" of HDM 5-pin connector to activate HDM. See appropriate chassis wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS.

Based on voltage inputs from headlight switch, HDM directs voltage through 4-pin connector to headlight door motors to actuate headlight doors. To reverse motor direction, HDM reverses circuit polarity. HDM determines when doors are fully open, closed or jammed and turns off power to motors to prevent overload.

TROUBLE SHOOTING

Check fusible links "F" and "G". Check door linkage for mechanical binding before performing electrical tests, as high torque load may cause headlight door motors to stop operating before reaching end of travel. Check and repair headlights, if inoperative.

TESTING

CAUTIONHDM contains solid-state circuitry. DO NOT apply voltage (ohmmeter or other source) to HDM internal circuits.

Note. Before testing headlight door system, repair headlights if they remain on all the time or do not turn on at all.

HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY

Note. Headlight doors may be opened and closed manually by rotating knob on headlight door motor.

  1. Open hood. Turn on headlights to open headlight doors. Disconnect headlight motor connector at outer side of headlamp. Turn off headlights.
  2. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect headlight assembly electrical connectors and release wiring harness from retainers. Remove 2 screws from front of assembly.
  3. Remove assembly bracket from hood hinge fasteners. Remove 4 assembly-to-hood nuts and hood hinge bracket. Remove assembly. Remove 4 headlight bezel screws and remove bezel. Remove 4 closure/door screws and remove closure/door.
  4. Release actuator motor harness from retaining clips. Remove actuator motor screws and remove actuator motor from assembly. To install, reverse removal procedure.
