MANUAL
Note. For manual transmission/transaxle replacement procedures, see appropriate CLUTCH article.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air cleaner. Drain transmission fluid. Disconnect upper end of T.V. cable at throttle linkage. Remove filler tube from transmission. Raise and support vehicle on a hoist. Index mark and remove drive shaft.
- On Corvette models, remove complete exhaust system and driveline beam. On Corvette convertible, remove upper and lower body braces. On Camaro and Firebird, remove torque arm from rear suspension. To remove torque arm, remove rear brake hose retaining bracket.
- Remove both lower shock absorber nuts. Carefully lower rear axle until coil springs can be removed. Remove coil springs. Remove front torque arm bracket and torque arm. CAUTION: Coil springs must be removed before removing torque arm to avoid rear axle twist and damage to vehicle.
- On all models, remove lower floor reinforcement (if equipped). Disconnect speedometer cable. Remove shifter linkage and disconnect all electrical connectors. Remove flexplate cover. Index mark flywheel to torque converter and remove bolts.
- Remove catalytic converter support bracket and remove crossmember. Support transmission with transmission jack. Lower transmission slightly and disconnect oil cooler lines. Remove T.V. cable hold-down bolt.
- Support engine. Remove transmission-to-engine bolts. Pull transmission back enough to install Torque Converter Holder (J-21366). Lower transmission from vehicle.
- To install transmission, reverse removal procedure. Observe index marks made during removal and align marks to original positions. Test torque converter for freedom of rotation.
- Tighten torque converter-to-flexplate bolts finger tight, then tighten to specification. Adjust shift linkage and T.V. cable. See ADJUSTMENTS in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION article. Refill transmission to proper fluid level.
