MODEL IDENTIFICATION

WARNINGVehicles are equipped with air bag supplemental restraint system. Before attempting any repairs involving steering column, instrument panel or related components, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

A scan tool can be connected to the Data Link Connector (DLC), allowing the scan tool to communicate with the various modules on board the vehicle. The Purple 1807 circuit wire allows Class 2 communication between the modules and with the scan tool. The Tan/White 799 circuit and the Tan 800 circuit allow UART communication with a scan tool. The Black/White 1455 circuit wire allows the scan tool to program the Remote Door Lock Receiver.

  1. Ensure scan tool is operating properly by testing scan tool on a known good vehicle.
  2. Inspect power auxiliary fuse No. 7. See «FUSES & CIRCUIT BREAKERS - G-VAN»(/chevrolet/chevy-van-g1500/1996-1998/remont/fuses-circuit-breakers/#fuses-circuit-breakers) article in ELECTRICAL. If fuse is open, repair short and replace fuse.
  3. Ensure grounds G101 and G201 are clean and tight. See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS»(/chevrolet/chevy-van-g1500/1996-1998/remont/communication-devices/#data-link-communications-system__component-locations) .
  4. Ensure scan tool is properly connected to the DLC.
  5. Check for a broken or partially broken wire inside insulation, which could cause system malfunction but prove good in a continuity/voltage check with system disconnected. These circuits may be intermittent or resistive when loaded and should be checked by monitoring the voltage drop with the system under load.
  6. Ensure any aftermarket electronic equipment is properly installed. If fault is found, repair as necessary.
