Circuit/System Description
The instrument panel (I/P) lamp dimmer switch is used to increase and decrease the brightness of the interior backlighting components. The I/P dimmer switch provides a voltage signal that will increase as the brightness of the lights are increased and decrease as the brightness of the lights are decreased. The body control module (BCM) provides a B+ voltage reference to the I/P dimmer switch. When the I/P dimmer switch is placed in the desired position, the dimmed voltage setting is applied from the I/P dimmer switch through the I/P dimmer switch signal circuit to the BCM. The BCM interprets the signal and applies the dimmed voltage to the I/P lamps supply voltage circuit and the interior backlighting components dim to the requested level. Ground for the I/P dimmer switch is provided at G201.
Conditions for Running the DTC
Battery voltage must be between 9-16 volts.
Conditions for Setting the DTC

The DTC will set for the following conditions
- The BCM detects a short to ground in the I/P dimmer switch voltage reference circuit.
- The BCM detects a short to ground in the I/P dimmer switch signal circuit.
- The BCM detects a short to ground or an open/high resistance in the BCM VB4 fuse B+ circuit.

The DTC will set when the BCM detects a short to voltage in the I/P dimmer switch voltage reference circuit or the vehicles system voltage exceeds the normal operating range of 16 volts.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
- The I/P dimmer switch will not operate.
- The I/P dimming lamps will not illuminate.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
- The condition responsible for setting the DTC no longer exists.
- A history DTC will clear once 100 consecutive malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.

Circuit/System Verification
Ignition ON, observe the scan tool Dimming Control Reference voltage. The reading should display 2.5 volts or greater.
- If less than the specified range, refer to I/P Dimming Control Malfunction.
- If within the specified range, refer to I/P Dimmer Switch Malfunction.
Circuit/System Testing
I/P Dimmer Switch Malfunction
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the I/P dimmer switch.
- Ignition OFF, verify that a test lamp illuminates between B+ and the ground circuit terminal 4. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Ignition ON, verify the scan tool Dimming Control Signal parameter is less than 0.0 volts. If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit terminal 13 for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- Ignition ON, test for B+ between the voltage reference circuit terminal 12 and ground. If less than the specified value, test the voltage reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal 13 and the voltage reference circuit terminal 12. Verify the scan tool Dimming Control Signal parameter is greater than 2.5 volts. If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- If all circuits test normal, test or replace the I/P dimmer switch.
I/P Dimming Control Malfunction
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the X4 harness connector at the BCM.
- Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the BCM VB4 fuse B+ circuit terminal 4 and ground. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
- If all circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.

The body control module (BCM) applies battery voltage to the courtesy lamps through 2 separately controlled courtesy lamp supply voltage circuits. When any door is opened, the door ajar switch contacts close and the BCM receives a door-ajar input. If the BCM receives a door lock or unlock input or a rear hatch open input, the BCM will activate the courtesy lamp supply voltage circuits, providing battery voltage to all of the instrument panel (I/P) courtesy lamps, dome lamps, rearview mirror lamps and rear compartment lamps. In the event that any of these lamps were to remain illuminated for more than 20 minutes with the ignition switch in the OFF position, the BCM will deactivate the courtesy lamp control circuits to prevent a total battery discharge condition.
Battery voltage must be between 9-16 volts.
DTC B1480 00 will set when the courtesy lamp supply voltage circuit that feeds the courtesy lamps, dome lamps or overhead console lamps are shorted to ground for longer than 1 second.
The courtesy lamps will not operate.
- The condition responsible for setting the DTC no longer exists.
- A history DTC will clear once the 100 consecutive malfunction free ignition cycles have occurred.

When the transmission is placed in the REVERSE position, the transmission control module (TCM) sends a serial data message to the body control module (BCM). The message indicates that the gear selector is in the REVERSE position. The BCM applies battery voltage to the backup lamps and inside rearview mirror. Once the driver moves the gear selector out of the REVERSE position, a message is sent by the TCM via serial data requesting the BCM to remove battery voltage from the backup lamp control circuit. The engine may need to be running for the backup lamps to function.
- Battery voltage must be between 9-16 V.
- Backup lamps commanded ON.
DTC B2545 00 will set when the BCM detects a short to ground in the backup lamps control circuit.
When DTC B2545 00 is present, the backup lamps will not operate.

- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the inside rearview mirror.
- Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal 10 and ground.
- Command the Backup Lamps ON and OFF with a scan tool. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states. If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM. If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- Connect the harness connector at the inside rearview mirror.
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the inoperative backup lamp.
- Ignition OFF, exterior lamps OFF, test for less than 5 ohms between the ground circuit terminal B and ground. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal A and ground.
- Command the Backup Lamps ON and OFF with a scan tool. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states. If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM. If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- If all circuits test normal, test or replace the inoperative backup lamp.

When the headlamp switch is placed in the headlamp ON position, ground is applied to the body control module (BCM) through the headlamp ON signal circuit. The BCM then applies ground to the headlamp low beam relay control circuit which energizes the low beam relay. With the low beam relay energized, the switch contacts close allowing battery voltage to flow through the HDLP LO beam fuses to the low beam headlamps. Ground for the left headlamp is supplied at G101 and the right headlamp receives ground at G102.
- Battery voltage must be between 9-16 volts.
- Headlamps ON.
DTC B2575 00 will set when the BCM detects a short to voltage in the headlamp low beam relay control circuit.
Actions Taken When the DTC Sets
When DTC B2575 00 is present, the low beam headlamps will not operate.
- The condition responsible for setting the DTC no longer exists.
- A history DTC will clear once 100 consecutive malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.

When the headlamp switch is placed in the AUTO position, the body control module (BCM) receives a ground signal through the headlamp switch headlamps OFF signal circuit. The headlamps ON signal circuit and the park lamp switch signal circuit are both open and have no ground signal. When the headlamp switch is placed in the PARK or HEAD position, the BCM will receive a ground signal through the headlamp switch headlamps ON signal circuit and the park lamp switch signal circuit. The headlamp switch headlamps OFF signal circuit will be open and have no ground signal.
Battery voltage must be between 9-16 volts.
DTC B257A 00 will set when the BCM detects a short to ground on the headlamp switch headlamps OFF signal circuit or the headlamp switch headlamps ON signal circuit.
- When DTC B257A 00 is present on the headlamp switch headlamps OFF signal circuit, the low beam headlamps are always ON in the AUTO position. The headlamp switch operates in all positions other than AUTO. The AUTO headlamp defeat is inoperative.
- When DTC B257A 00 is present on the headlamp switch headlamps ON signal circuit, the low beam headlamps are always ON. The BCM disregards all headlamp switch inputs.
- The condition responsible for setting the DTC no longer exists.
- A history DTC will clear once 100 consecutive malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.

- Ignition OFF, disconnect the X2 harness connector at the BCM.
- Connect a test lamp between the signal circuit terminal 17 and B+.
- Turn the headlamp switch between the AUTO and AUTO disable positions. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF as the switch is cycled. If the test lamp is always OFF, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit test normal, replace the headlamp switch. If the test lamp is always ON, test the signal circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit test normal, replace the headlamp switch.

When the turn signal/multifunction switch is placed in the headlamps high or flash to pass (FTP) position, ground is applied to the body control module (BCM) through the headlamp high beam signal circuit or the flash to pass switch signal circuit. The BCM applies ground to the headlamp high beam relay control circuit which energizes the high beam relay. With the high beam relay energized, the switch contacts close allowing battery voltage to flow through the HDLP HI beam fuses to the high beam headlamps. Ground for the left headlamp is supplied at G101 and the right headlamp receives ground at G102.
- Battery voltage must be between 9-16 volts.
- Headlamps ON.
DTC B2580 00 will set when the BCM detects a short to voltage in the headlamp high beam relay control circuit.
When DTC B2580 00 is present, the high beam headlamps and flash to pass (FTP) will not operate.

Battery voltage is applied at all times to both the coil and switch sides of the PARK LAMP relay located in the underhood fuse block. The headlamp switch is suppled with ground at G201 at all times. When the headlamp switch is placed in either the HEAD or PARK position, ground is applied to the park lamp signal circuit to the body control module (BCM). The BCM responds by applying ground to the park lamp relay control circuit. This energizes the park lamp relay coil causing the relay switch contacts to close allowing battery voltage to flow through the T/LAMP LT and T/LAMP RT fuses to all of the park, tail, license and marker lamps.
- Battery voltage must be between 9-16 volts.
- Park lamps ON.
DTC B2585 00 will set when the BCM detects a short to voltage in the park lamp relay control circuit.

The ambient light sensor is used to monitor outside lighting conditions. The ambient light sensor provides a voltage signal that will vary between 0.2 and 4.9 volts depending on outside lighting conditions. The body control module (BCM) provides a 5 V reference signal to the ambient light sensor. The body control module (BCM) monitors the ambient light sensor signal circuit to determine if outside lighting conditions are correct for either daytime running lights (DRL) or automatic lamp control (ALC) when the headlamp switch is in the AUTO position. In daylight conditions, the BCM will command the DRLs ON by applying ground to the DRL relay via the DRL relay control circuit. When the BCM applies ground to the DRL relay control circuit, the DRL relay coil energizes causing the relay switch contacts to close. With the DRL relay energized, voltage is applied through the relay switch contacts, the DRL Resistor and the DRL fuse to the left and right low beam headlamp fuses illuminating the low beam headlamps. Any function or condition that turns the headlamps ON will cancel DRL operation. Any function or condition that turns on the headlamps will cancel DRL operation.
- Battery voltage must be between 9-16 V.

DTC B2600 00 will set when the BCM detects a short to voltage in the DRL relay control circuit.

The instrument panel (I/P) lamp dimmer switch is used to increase and decrease the brightness of the interior backlighting components. The I/P dimmer switch provides a voltage signal that will increase as the brightness of the lights are increased and decrease as the brightness of the lights are decreased. The body control module (BCM) provides a B+ voltage reference to the I/P dimmer switch. When the I/P dimmer switch is placed in the desired position, the dimmed voltage setting is applied from the I/P dimmer switch through the I/P dimmer switch signal circuit to the BCM. The BCM interprets the signal and applies the dimmed voltage to the I/P lamps supply voltage circuit and the interior backlighting components dim to the requested level.

- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at any component with inoperative backlighting.
- Ignition OFF, scan tool disconnected, interior lamps OFF, doors CLOSED, test for less than 5 ohms between the ground circuit and ground. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Connect a test lamp between the control circuit and ground.
- Command the Interior Dimming ON and OFF with a scan tool. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states. If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM. If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.

The ambient light sensor is used to monitor outside lighting conditions. The ambient light sensor provides a voltage signal that will vary between 0.2 and 4.9 volts depending on outside lighting conditions. The body control module (BCM) provides a 5-volt reference signal to the ambient light sensor. The body control module (BCM) monitors the ambient light sensor signal circuit to determine if outside lighting conditions are correct for either daytime running lights (DRL) or automatic lamp control (ALC) when the headlamp switch is in the AUTO position. In daylight conditions the BCM will command the DRLs ON. During low light conditions the BCM will command the low beam headlamps ON. Any function or condition that turns on the headlamps will cancel DRL operation.
Battery voltage must be between 9-16 volts.

The brake pedal position sensor is used to sense the action of the driver application of the brake pedal. The brake pedal position sensor provides an analog voltage signal that will increase as the brake pedal is applied. The body control module (BCM) provides a low reference signal and a 5 V reference voltage to the brake pedal position sensor. When the variable signal reaches a voltage threshold indicating the brakes have been applied, the BCM will apply battery voltage to the stop lamp control circuit illuminating the left and right stop lamps and the center high mounted stop lamp (CHMSL). The BCM also applies battery voltage to the transmission control module (TCM) and engine control module (ECM) via the brake applied signal circuit.
- Battery voltage must be between 9-16 volts.
- Brakes APPLIED.
The DTC will set when the BCM detects a short to ground in the stop lamp relay control circuit when the stop lamps are being commanded ON.

The brake pedal position sensor is used to sense the action of the driver application of the brake pedal. The brake pedal position sensor provides an analog voltage signal that will increase as the brake pedal is applied. The body control module (BCM) provides a low reference signal and a 5 V reference voltage to the brake pedal position sensor. When the variable signal reaches a voltage threshold indicating the brakes have been applied, the BCM will apply battery voltage to the stop lamp control circuit illuminating the left and right stop lamps and the center high mounted stop lamp (CHMSL). The BCM also applies battery voltage to the transmission control module (TCM) and engine control module (ECM) via the brake applied signal circuit.
- Battery voltage must be between 9-16 volts.
- Brakes APPLIED.
DTC C0277 06 will set for the following conditions
- The BCM detects a short to ground or an open/high resistance in the brake pedal position sensor signal circuit.
- The BCM detects a short to ground or an open/high resistance in the brake pedal position sensor 5-volt reference circuit.
DTC C0277 07 will set for the following conditions
- The BCM detects a short to battery voltage in the brake pedal position sensor signal circuit.
- The BCM detects a short to battery voltage in the brake pedal position sensor 5 V Reference circuit.
DTC C0277 09
The BCM detects the brake pedal position sensor signal is changing faster than possible under normal operating conditions.
DTC C0277 4B
The brake pedal position sensor home position is not learned.
DTC C0890 03
The BCM detects a short to ground in the brake pedal position sensor voltage reference circuit.
DTC C0890 07
The BCM detects a short to battery voltage in the brake pedal position sensor voltage reference circuits.
- The ABS Fault indicator is commanded ON.
- If the DTC sets while the vehicle is running, the BCM will activate the brake lights when the vehicles transmission is not in the PARK position and the vehicle is not accelerating.
- For DTC C0277 4B the stop lamps may not activate at the expected brake pedal positions.
- The condition responsible for setting the DTC no longer exists.
- For DTC C0277 07 the ignition must be cycled before the code can be cleared.
- For DTC C0277 4B a successful brake pedal position sensor calibration has been performed.
- A history DTC will clear once 50 malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.
- A DTC will not clear the current status until the next ignition cycle.

DTC C0277 06, C0277 07, C0890 03 and C0890 07
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the brake pedal position sensor.
- Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between B+ and the low reference circuit terminal 1. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the low reference circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- Ignition ON, test for 4.8-5.2 V between the 5 V reference circuit terminal 2 and ground. If less than the specified range, test the 5 V reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM. If greater than the specified range, test the 5 V reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- Verify the scan tool BPP Sensor parameter is less than 100 counts. If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit terminal 3 for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- Install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal 3 and the 5 V reference circuit terminal 2. Verify the scan tool BPP Sensor parameter is greater than 400 counts. If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- If all circuits test normal, replace the brake pedal position sensor.
DTC C0277 09
- Replace the brake pedal position sensor.
- Perform the brake pedal position sensor recalibration procedure. Refer to «Brake Pedal Position Sensor Calibration»(/chevrolet/captiva/i-2-2013-2016/remont/exterior-lights/#lighting-system__brake-pedal-position-sensor-calibration) .
- Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running and Setting the DTC and verify the DTC does not reset. If the DTC resets, replace the BCM.
DTC C0277 4B
- Verify that the DTC sets under the Conditions for Running and Setting.
- Perform the brake pedal position sensor recalibration procedure. Refer to «Brake Pedal Position Sensor Calibration»(/chevrolet/captiva/i-2-2013-2016/remont/exterior-lights/#lighting-system__brake-pedal-position-sensor-calibration) .

- Ignition OFF, disconnect the X1 harness connector at the ECM.
- Disconnect the harness connector at the TCM.
- Connect a test lamp between the signal circuit terminal 57 at the ECM harness connector and ground.
- Ignition ON, command the stop lamps ON and OFF by applying and releasing the brake pedal. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states. If the test lamp is always ON, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM. If the test lamp is always OFF, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- Ignition OFF, connect a test lamp between the signal circuit terminal 57 at the ECM harness connector and the connector terminal at the ECM.

- Ignition ON, command the stop lamps ON and OFF by applying and releasing the brake pedal. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states. If the test lamp is always ON, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM. If the test lamp is always OFF, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- If all circuits test normal, replace the TCM.

When the transmission is placed in the REVERSE position, the transmission control module (TCM) sends a serial data message to the body control module (BCM). The message indicates that the gear selector is in the REVERSE position. The BCM applies battery voltage to the backup lamps and inside rearview mirror. Once the driver moves the gear selector out of the REVERSE position, a message is sent by the TCM via serial data requesting the BCM to remove battery voltage from the backup lamp control circuit. The engine may need to be running for the backup lamps to function.

- Ignition OFF, exterior lamps OFF, test for less than 5 ohms between the ground circuit terminal B and ground. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal A and ground.
- Command the Backup Lamps ON and OFF with a scan tool. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states. If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM. If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. The body control module (BCM) applies battery voltage to the courtesy lamps through 2 separately controlled courtesy lamp supply voltage circuits. When any door is opened, the door ajar switch contacts close and the BCM receives a door-ajar input. If the BCM receives a door lock or unlock input or a rear hatch open input, the BCM will activate the courtesy lamp supply voltage circuits, providing battery voltage to all of the instrument panel (I/P) courtesy lamps, dome lamps, rearview mirror lamps and rear compartment lamps. In the event that any of these lamps were to remain illuminated for more than 20 minutes with the ignition switch in the OFF position, the BCM will deactivate the courtesy lamp control circuits to prevent a total battery discharge condition.

Courtesy Lamp Defeat Switch Malfunction
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the front dome lamp.
- Ignition OFF, scan tool OFF, doors CLOSED, interior lamps OFF, test for less than 5 ohms between the ground circuit terminal 4 and ground. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Ignition ON, all doors CLOSED, verify the scan tool Ctsy. Lamp Actv. Reason parameter is Off. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal 2 for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- Install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal 2 and ground. Verify the scan tool Ctsy. Lamp Actv. Reason parameter is Manual Defeat. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- If all circuits test normal, replace the courtesy lamp defeat switch.
Courtesy Lamps Malfunction
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate courtesy lamp.
- Ignition OFF, scan tool OFF, doors CLOSED, interior lamps OFF, test for less than 5 ohms between the appropriate ground circuit terminal listed below and ground. - Command the Courtesy Lamps ON and OFF with a scan tool. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states. If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM. If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- If all circuits test normal, replace the courtesy lamp.
Reading Lamps Malfunction
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate courtesy/reading lamp assembly.
- Ignition OFF, scan tool OFF, doors CLOSED, interior lamps OFF, test for less than 5 ohms between the appropriate ground circuit terminal listed below and ground. Courtesy/reading lamp 2nd row terminal B - with UUC Courtesy/reading lamp 2nd row terminal 2 - without UUC Front dome lamp terminal 4 If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the appropriate control circuit terminal listed below and ground. Courtesy/reading lamp 2nd row terminal A - with UUC Courtesy/reading lamp 2nd row terminal 4 - without UUC Front dome lamp terminal 3 If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- Remove the BCM VB2 fuse and verify the test lamp turns OFF. If the test lamp remains illuminated, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- If all circuits test normal, replace the courtesy/reading lamp assembly.
Underseat lamp Malfunction
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate underseat lamp.
- Ignition OFF, test for less than 5 ohms between the ground circuit terminal D and ground. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Ignition ON, park lamps ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the control circuit terminal B and ground. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the headlamp switch.
- Verify that a test lamp illuminates between the control circuit terminal C and ground. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the headlamp.
- Ignition ON, park lamps OFF, verify that a test lamp does not illuminate between the control circuit terminal B and ground. If the test lamp illuminates, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the headlamp switch.
- Verify that a test lamp does not illuminate between the control circuit terminal C and ground. If the test lamp illuminates, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the headlamp switch.
- If all circuits test normal, replace the underseat lamp.

The ambient light sensor is used to monitor outside lighting conditions. The ambient light sensor provides a voltage signal that will vary between 0.2 and 4.9 V depending on outside lighting conditions. The body control module (BCM) provides a 5 V reference signal to the ambient light sensor. The body control module (BCM) monitors the ambient light sensor signal circuit to determine if outside lighting conditions are correct for either daytime running lights (DRL) or automatic lamp control (ALC) when the headlamp switch is in the AUTO position. In daylight conditions, the BCM will command the DRLs ON by applying ground to the DRL relay via the DRL relay control circuit. When the BCM applies ground to the DRL relay control circuit, the DRL relay coil energizes causing the relay switch contacts to close. With the DRL relay energized, voltage is applied through the relay switch contacts, the DRL Resistor and the DRL fuse to the left and right low beam headlamp fuses illuminating the low beam headlamps. Any function or condition that turns the headlamps ON will cancel DRL operation. Any function or condition that turns on the headlamps will cancel DRL operation.
Diagnostic Aids
Note. This diagnostic procedure assumes that the low beam headlamps are operating within specifications. If the low beam headlamps are inoperative, diagnose the low beam headlamp malfunction before proceeding with the following diagnostic. Refer to Headlamps Malfunction .

The front fog lamp relay coil is supplied with battery voltage when the ignition is in the RUN or CRANK position. The front fog lamp relay switch is supplied with battery voltage at all times. The front fog lamp switch signal circuit is grounded momentarily by pressing the front fog lamp switch. The body control module (BCM) energizes the front fog lamp relay by applying ground to the front fog lamp relay control circuit. When the front fog lamp relay is energized, the relay switch contacts close and battery voltage is applied through the FRONT FOG fuse to the front fog lamp control circuit which illuminates the front fog lamps.

- Ignition ON, observe the scan tool Front Fog Lamp Switch parameter while activating the front fog lamp switch. The parameter should change between Active and Inactive. If the parameter does not change between the commanded states, refer to Fog Lamp Switch Malfunction.
- Turn the front fog lamps ON and OFF with the front fog lamps switch. The front fog lamps should turn ON and OFF as selected. If the front fog lamps do not change between the selected states, refer to Fog Lamps Malfunction.
- Command the Display Test ON and OFF with a scan tool. The front fog lamps indicator should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states. If the front fog lamps indicator illuminates during the test, replace the BCM. - Ignition OFF, verify a test lamp illuminates between B+ and the ground circuit terminal 4. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Ignition ON, verify the scan tool Front Fog Lamp Switch parameter is Inactive. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal 1 for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.

The hazard flashers may be activated in any power mode. The hazard switch is located on the I/P control panel and is permanently grounded through G201. When the hazard switch is placed in the ON position, ground is applied through the hazard switch signal circuit to the body control module (BCM). The BCM supplies battery voltage to all four turn signal lamps in an ON and OFF duty cycle. When the hazard switch is activated, the BCM sends a serial data message to the instrument panel cluster (IPC) requesting both turn signal indicators to be cycled ON and OFF.

Hazard Lamps Malfunction

- Ignition ON, verify the scan tool Hazard Lamp Switch parameter is Inactive. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal 7 for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal 7 and ground. Verify the scan tool Hazard Lamp Switch parameter is Active. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.

Hazard Lamp Indicators Malfunction
Ignition ON, with a scan tool perform the Display Test for the instrument panel cluster (IPC) and observe both turn signal indicators.
- If both turn signal indicators illuminate during the test, replace the BCM.
- If both turn signal indicators do not illuminate during the test or remain illuminated at all times, replace the IPC.

When the headlamp switch is placed in the headlamp ON position, ground is applied to the body control module (BCM) through the headlamp ON signal circuit. The BCM then applies ground to the headlamp low beam relay control circuit which energizes the low beam relay. With the low beam relay energized, the switch contacts close allowing battery voltage to flow through the HDLP LO beam fuses to the low beam headlamps.
When the turn signal/multifunction switch is placed in the headlamps high or flash to pass (FTP) position, ground is applied to the body control module (BCM) through the headlamp high beam signal circuit or the flash to pass switch signal circuit. The BCM applies ground to the headlamp high beam relay control circuit which energizes the high beam relay. With the high beam relay energized, the switch contacts close allowing battery voltage to flow through the HDLP HI beam fuses to the high beam headlamps. With the headlamp dimmer switch in the high beam position the BCM sends a serial data message to the instrument panel cluster (IPC) requesting the IPC to illuminate the high beam indicator.

Control Module References for scan tool information
- Ignition ON, observe the scan tool Headlamp On Switch parameter while turning the headlamp switch ON and OFF. The reading should change between Active and Inactive. If the reading does not change between the specified values, refer to Headlamp Switch Malfunction.
- Observe the scan tool Headlamp Off Switch parameter while turning the headlamp switch ON and OFF. The reading should change between Active and Inactive. If the reading does not change between the specified values, refer to Headlamp Switch Malfunction.
- Observe the scan tool Flash to Pass Switch parameter while applying and releasing the turn signal/multifunction switch. The reading should toggle between Active and Inactive. If the reading does not change between the specified values, refer to Turn Signal/Multifunction Switch Malfunction.
- Observe the scan tool High Beam Select switch parameter while applying and releasing the high beam select switch. The reading should toggle between Active and Inactive. If the reading does not change between the commanded states, refer to Turn Signal/Multifunction Switch Malfunction.
- Command the Headlamps ON and OFF with a scan tool. The low beam headlamps should turn ON and OFF when commanded. If the low beam headlamps do not turn ON and OFF when commanded, refer to Headlamps Malfunction - Low Beam.
- Command the High Beams ON and OFF with a scan tool. The high beam headlamps should turn ON and OFF when commanded. If the high beam headlamps do not turn ON and OFF when commanded, refer to Headlamps Malfunction - High Beam.
- Command the Display Test ON and OFF with a scan tool. The lights on indicator and high beam indicator should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states. If the lights on indicator and high beam indicator illuminate during the test, replace the BCM. If the lights on indicator and high beam indicator do not illuminate during the test or remain illuminated at all times, replace the instrument cluster.
Headlamp Switch Malfunction
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the headlamp switch.
- Ignition OFF, verify that a test lamp illuminates between B+ and the ground circuit terminal 4. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Ignition ON, verify the scan tool Headlamp Switch parameter is Inactive. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal 6 for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- Verify the scan tool Auto Hdlp. Disable Sw. parameter is Inactive. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal 8 for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- Install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal 6 and ground. Verify the scan tool Headlamp Switch parameter is Active. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or and open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- Install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal 8 and ground. Verify the scan tool Auto Hdlp. Disable Sw. parameter is Active. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or and open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- If all circuits test normal, test or replace the headlamp switch.
Turn Signal/Multifunction Switch Malfunction
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the turn signal/multifunction switch.
- Ignition OFF, verify that a test lamp illuminates between B+ and the appropriate ground circuit terminal listed below. Ground terminal A - with MH2 Ground terminal G - without MH2 If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Ignition ON, verify the scan tool Flash to Pass Switch parameter is Inactive. If not the specified value, test the appropriate signal circuit terminal listed below for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM. Signal terminal C - with LE5 and MH2 Signal terminal J - without LE5 and MH2
- Verify the scan tool High Beam Select Switch parameter is Inactive. If not the specified value, test the appropriate signal circuit terminal listed below for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM. Signal terminal B - with LE5 and MH2 Signal terminal H - without LE5 and MH2
- Install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the appropriate signal circuit terminal listed below and ground. Verify the scan tool Flash to Pass Switch parameter is Active. Signal terminal C - with LE5 and MH2 Signal terminal J - without LE5 and MH2 If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- Install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the appropriate signal circuit terminal listed below and ground. Verify the scan tool High Beam Select Switch parameter is Active. Signal terminal B - with LE5 and MH2 Signal terminal H - without LE5 and MH2 If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- If all circuits test normal, test or replace the turn signal/multifunction switch.
Headlamps Malfunction - Low Beam
- Ignition OFF, remove the DRL fuse and disconnect the low beam relay.
- Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp does not illuminate between the control circuit terminal 87 and ground. If the test lamp illuminates, test the control circuit for a short to voltage.
- Verify that a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal 30 and ground. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal and the B+ circuit fuse is open, test the control circuit terminal 87 for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the low beam relay.
- Verify that a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal 85 and ground. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
- Disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate low beam headlamp.
- Ignition OFF, scan tool OFF, exterior lamps OFF, test for less than 5 ohms between the ground circuit terminal B and ground. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Connect the harness connector at the low beam headlamp.
- Connect a 20 A fused jumper wire between the B+ circuit terminal 30 and the control circuit terminal 87. Verify the low beam headlamps illuminate. If the low beam headlamps do not illuminate, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the low beam headlamp.
- Connect a test lamp between the B+ circuit terminal 85 and the control circuit terminal 86.
- Command the Low Beam headlamps ON and OFF with a scan tool. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states. If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM. If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the low beam relay.
Headlamps Malfunction - High Beam
- Ignition OFF, remove the DRL fuse and disconnect the high beam relay.
- Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp does not illuminate between the control circuit terminal 87 and ground. If the test lamp illuminates, test the control circuit for a short to voltage.
- Verify that a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal 30 and ground. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. - Verify that a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal 85 and ground. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
- Disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate high beam headlamp.
- Ignition OFF, scan tool OFF, exterior lamps OFF, test for less than 5 ohms between the ground circuit terminal B and ground. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Connect the harness connector at the high beam headlamp.

- Command the High Beam headlamps ON and OFF with a scan tool. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states. If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM. If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the high beam relay.

The instrument panel (I/P) lamp dimmer switch is used to increase and decrease the brightness of the interior backlighting components. The I/P dimmer switch provides a voltage signal that will increase as the brightness of the lights are increased and decrease as the brightness of the lights are decreased. The body control module (BCM) provides a B+ voltage reference to the I/P dimmer switch. When the I/P dimmer switch is placed in the desired position, the dimmed voltage setting is applied from the I/P dimmer switch through the I/P dimmer switch signal circuit to the BCM. The BCM interprets the signal and applies the dimmed voltage to the I/P lamps supply voltage circuit and the interior backlighting components dim to the requested level.

Ignition ON, observe the scan tool Dimming Control Signal parameter while operating the dimmer switch from high to low. The parameter should change from a high percent to a low percent as the switch is activated.
- If the parameter does not change, refer to I/P Dimmer Switch Malfunction.
- If the parameter changes, refer to Interior Backlighting Malfunction.
I/P Dimmer Switch Malfunction
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the headlamp switch.
- Ignition OFF, verify that a test lamp illuminates between B+ and the ground circuit terminal 4. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Ignition ON, verify the scan tool Dimming Control Signal parameter is less than 0.0 V. If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit terminal 13 for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- Ignition ON, test for B+ between the voltage reference circuit terminal 12 and ground. If less than the specified value, test the voltage reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- Install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal 13 and the voltage reference circuit terminal 12. Verify the scan tool Dimming Control Signal parameter is greater than 2.5 V. If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- If all circuits test normal, test or replace the headlamp switch.
Interior Backlighting Malfunction
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at any component with inoperative backlighting.
- Ignition OFF, scan tool disconnected, interior lamps OFF, doors CLOSED, test for less than 5 ohms between the ground circuit and ground. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Connect a test lamp between the control circuit and ground.
- Command the Interior Dimming ON and OFF with a scan tool. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states. If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM. If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- If all circuits test normal, test or replace the component with the inoperative backlighting.

Battery voltage is applied at all times to both the coil and switch sides of the PARK LAMP relay located in the underhood fuse block. The headlamp switch is suppled with ground at all times. When the headlamp switch is placed in either the HEAD or PARK position, ground is applied to the park lamp signal circuit to the body control module (BCM). The BCM responds by applying ground to the park lamp relay control circuit. This energizes the park lamp relay coil causing the relay switch contacts to close allowing battery voltage to flow through the T/LAMP LT and T/LAMP RT fuses to all of the park, tail, license and marker lamps.

Park, License, and/or Tail Lamps Malfunction
- Ignition OFF, remove the fuse of the appropriate park/marker lamps and inspect. If the fuse is OPEN, test the control circuit of the blown fuse for a short to ground.
- Install the fuse.
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the park lamp relay.
- Ignition ON, verify a test lamp does not illuminate between the control circuit terminal 87 and ground. If the test lamp illuminates, test the control circuit for a short to voltage.
- Verify a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal 30 and ground. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal and the B+ circuit fuse is open, test the control circuit terminal 87 for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the park lamp relay.

If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM. If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.

The brake pedal position sensor is used to sense the action of the driver application of the brake pedal. The brake pedal position sensor provides an analog voltage signal that will increase as the brake pedal is applied. The body control module (BCM) provides a low reference signal and a 5 V reference voltage to the brake pedal position sensor. When the variable signal reaches a voltage threshold indicating the brakes have been applied, the BCM will apply battery voltage to the stop lamp control circuit illuminating the left and right stop lamps and the center high mounted stop lamp (CHMSL). The BCM also applies battery voltage to the transmission control module (TCM) and engine control module (ECM) via the brake applied signal circuit.

Control Module References for scan tool information
- Ignition ON, observe the scan tool Brake Applied Output Signal parameter while pressing and releasing the brake pedal. The parameter should change between ON and OFF as the brake pedal is applied and released. If the parameter does not change between the commanded states, refer to the Brake Pedal Position Sensor Malfunction.
- Observe the left and right stop lamps while applying and releasing the brake pedal. The stop lamps should turn ON and OFF as the brake pedal is applied and released. If the left or right stop lamps do not turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states, refer to Stop Lamps Malfunction.
- Observe the center high mount stop lamp while pressing and releasing the brake pedal. The center high mount stop lamp should turn ON and OFF as the brake pedal is applied and released. If the center high mount stop lamp does not turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states, refer to Center High Mount Stop Lamp Malfunction.
Brake Pedal Position Sensor Malfunction
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the brake pedal position sensor.
- Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp does not illuminate between the low reference circuit terminal 1 and ground. If the test lamp illuminates, test the low reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- Ignition ON, test for 4.8 V and 5.2 V between the 5 V reference circuit terminal 2 and ground. If less than the specified range, test the 5 V reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM. If greater than the specified range, test the 5 V reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- If all circuits test normal, replace the brake pedal position sensor.
Stop Lamps Malfunction
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the X4 harness connector at the BCM.
- Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal 4 and ground. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
- Ignition OFF, connect the X4 harness connector at the BCM.
- Disconnect the stop lamp relay.
- Ignition OFF, exterior lamps OFF, test for less than 5 ohms between the ground circuit terminal 86 and ground. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp does not illuminate between the control circuit terminal 87 and ground. If the test lamp illuminates, test the control circuit for a short to voltage.
- Verify that a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal 30 and ground. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal and the B+ circuit fuse is open, test the relay control circuit terminal 87 for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the stop lamp relay.
- Disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate stop lamp.
- Ignition OFF, exterior lamps OFF, test for less than 5 ohms between the ground circuit terminal C and ground. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Connect the harness connector at the stop lamp.
- Connect a 10A fused jumper wire between the B+ circuit terminal 30 and the control circuit terminal 87. Verify the stop lamps are activated. If the stop lamps do not activate, test the control circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the inoperative stop lamp.
- Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal 85 and the ground circuit terminal 86.
- Ignition ON, command the stop lamps ON and OFF by applying and releasing the brake pedal. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states. If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM. If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
- If all circuits test normal, replace the stop lamp relay.
Center High Mounted Stop Lamp Malfunction
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the center high mount stop lamp.
- Ignition OFF, exterior lamps OFF, test for less than 5 ohms between the ground circuit terminal 2 and ground. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal 1 and ground.
- Ignition ON, command the stop lamps ON and OFF by applying and releasing the brake pedal. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states. If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM. Ground is applied at all times to the turn signal/multifunction switch. The turn signal lamps may only be activated with the ignition switch in the ON or START position. When the turn signal/multifunction switch is placed in either the TURN RIGHT or TURN LEFT position, ground is applied to the body control module (BCM) through either the right turn or left turn signal switch signal circuit. The BCM then applies a pulsating voltage to the front and rear turn signal lamps through there respective voltage supply circuits. When a turn signal request is received by the BCM, a serial data message is sent to the instrument panel cluster (IPC) requesting the respective turn signal indicator be pulsed ON and OFF.

Control Module References for scan tool information
- Ignition ON, observe the scan tool Right Turn Signal Switch and Left Turn Signal Switch parameters while cycling the turn signal switch between the right and left positions. The readings should change between Active and Inactive. If the parameters do not change between the selected states, refer to Turn Signal Switch Malfunction.
- Ignition ON, observe the right and left turn signal lamps while cycling the turn signal switch between the right and left positions. Verify the turn signal lamps turn ON and OFF. If the turn signal lamps do not cycle between the selected states, refer to Turn Signal Lamps Malfunction.
- Command the Display Test ON and OFF with a scan tool. The left and right turn signal indicators should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states. If the left and right turn signal indicators illuminate during the test, replace the BCM. If the left and right turn signal indicators do not illuminate during the test or remain illuminated at all times, replace the instrument cluster.
Turn Signal Switch Malfunction
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the turn signal/multifunction switch.
- Ignition OFF, verify that a test lamp illuminates between B+ and the appropriate ground circuit terminal listed below. Ground terminal F - with LE5 and MH2 Ground terminal M - without LE5 and MH2 If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Ignition ON, verify the scan tool Left Turn Signal Switch parameter is Inactive. If not the specified value, test the appropriate signal circuit terminal listed below for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM. Signal terminal D - with LE5 and MH2 Signal terminal K - without LE5 and MH2
- Verify the scan tool Right Turn Signal Switch parameter is Inactive. If not the specified value, test the appropriate signal circuit terminal listed below for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM. Signal terminal E - with LE5 and MH2 Signal terminal L - without LE5 and MH2
- Install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the appropriate signal circuit terminal listed below and ground. Verify the scan tool Left Turn Signal Switch parameter is Active. Slide the brake stop lamp switch into the retainer until the switch plunger is touching against the striker plate. Once the switch barrel is against the strike plate, twist clockwise 60 degrees until the travel stop has been reached to lock it in place. CAUTION: Proper stoplamp switch adjustment is essential. Improper stoplamp switch adjustment could cause brake drag and excessive brake lining wear. With the switch properly adjusted, there will be a 0.2-1.2 mm (0.008-0.47 in) clearance between the end of the switch barrel and the striker plate on the pedal arm. Calibration Criteria
Note. Do not apply the brake pedal during the brake pedal position sensor calibration procedure. Any movement of the brake pedal during this procedure will cause the calibration procedure to fail. If this occurs, the brake pedal position sensor calibration must be repeated.
Brake pedal position sensor calibration must be performed after the brake pedal position sensor, body control module (BCM) or engine control module (ECM) have been serviced. The calibration procedure will set the brake pedal position sensor home value. This value is used by the BCM and ECM to determine the action of the driver applying the brake system and to provide this information to the vehicle subsystems via serial data.
Calibration Procedure
- Apply the parking brake.
- Ignition ON, engine OFF, place the transmission in the PARK position for automatic transmission or NEUTRAL position for manual transmission.
- Install a scan tool.
- Clear all DTCs before proceeding.
- Navigate to the Configuration/Reset Functions menu of the BCM.
- Select the Brake Pedal Position Sensor Learn procedure and follow the directions displayed on the screen.
- Navigate to the Configuration/Reset Functions menu of the ECM.
- Select the Learn Functions menu.
- Select the Brake Pedal Position Sensor Learn procedure and follow the directions displayed on the screen.

Headlamp Bracket Replacement
Headlamp Aiming
The vehicle has a visual optical headlamp aiming system. The aim has been preset at the factory and should need no further adjustment
However, If the vehicle is damaged in an accident, the headlamp aim may be affected and adjustment may be necessary.
If oncoming vehicles flash their high beams at you, this may also mean the vertical aim needs to be adjusted.
It is recommended that the vehicle is taken to your dealer for service if the headlamps need to be re-aimed. It is possible however, to re-aim the headlamps as described in the following procedure.
The vehicle should be properly prepared as follows
- The vehicle should be placed so the headlamps are 25 ft (7.6 m) from a light colored wall or other flat surface.
- The vehicle must have all four tires on a perfectly level surface which is level all the way to the wall or other flat surface.
- The vehicle should be placed so it is perpendicular to the wall or other flat surface.
- The vehicle should not have any snow, ice or mud on it.
- The vehicle should be fully assembled and all other work stopped while headlamp aiming is being done.
- The vehicle should be normally loaded with a full tank of fuel and one person or 160 lbs (75 kg) on the driver seat.
- Tires should be properly inflated.
Headlamp aiming is done with the vehicle low-beam headlamps. The high-beam headlamps will be correctly aimed if the low-beam headlamps are aimed properly.
- To adjust the vertical aim on the headlamps, complete the following
- Find the aim dots on the lens of the lamp assembly.
- Measure the distance from the ground to the aim dot on the lamp with the hood in the closed position. Record the distance.
- At the wall or other flat surface, measure from the ground upward the recorded distance and draw or tape a horizontal line the width of the vehicle.
- Turn on the low-beam headlamps and place a piece of cardboard or equivalent in front of the headlamp not being aimed. This should allow only the beam of light from the headlamp being aimed to be seen on the flat surface.
- Adjust the vertical headlamp adjustment screw until the Hot Spot (Center of mass of the Bright Area) is set at 8.0 inches (2) below the headlamp horizontal access (1) within +/- 2 inches when measured at 25 feet.
- Adjust the vertical headlamp adjustment screw until the Right Gradient Line (Cutoff Line) is set at the Horizontal Axis within +/- 2.0 inches (2) measured at 25 feet.
- Repeat steps 5, 6 and 7 for the opposite headlamp.

Measure from the center of the fog lamp to the ground line. Using this measurement, mark the horizontal centerline of the fog lamp line on the target screen directly in front of the vehicle. Parking and Turn Signal Lamp Bulb Replacement
Removal Procedure
- Remove the rear spoiler. Refer to «Rear Spoiler Replacement»(/chevrolet/captiva/i-2-2013-2016/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#exterior-trim) .
- Invert the spoiler and place on a clean dry, protected surface.
- Remove the spoiler to high mounted stop lamp screws (1).
- Disengage the washer hose from the spoiler.
- Disengage the electrical connector (2) from the spoiler bracket.
- Lift the high mounted stop lamp (3) from the spoiler.
- Remove the washer nozzle screws (1).
- Remove the rear washer nozzles (3) from the high mounted stop lamp (4) assembly.
- Remove the high mounted stop lamp assembly (4).
Installation Procedure
- Install the washer nozzles (3) into the rear high mounted stop lamp assembly (4).
- Install the rear window washer nozzle screws (1). Tighten the screws to 2 N.m (18 lb in).
- Position the high mounted stop lamp (3) to the rear spoiler bracket.
- Install the screws (1) to secure the high mounted stop lamp (3) to the rear spoiler bracket. Tighten the screws 2 N.m (18 lb in).
- Position and secure the high mounted stop lamp electrical connector (2) to the spoiler bracket.
- Secure the washer hose to the spoiler.
- Install the rear spoiler to the vehicle. Refer to «Rear Spoiler Replacement»(/chevrolet/captiva/i-2-2013-2016/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#exterior-trim) .

Exterior Lamps
The exterior lighting system consist of the following lamps
- The headlamps
- The daytime running lamps
- The fog lamps
- The park, tail and marker lamps
- The turn signal lamps
- The stop lamps
- The backup lamps
Headlamps
The headlamps may be turned ON 2 different ways. First, when the driver places the headlamp switch in the HEADLAMP position, for normal operation. Second, with the headlamp switch placed in the AUTO position, for automatic lamp control (ALC). During ALC, the headlamps will be OFF in daylight conditions or low beam operation in low light conditions. Battery positive voltage is supplied to the low beam relay and the high beam relay in the underhood fuse block. When low beam headlamps are requested, the body control module (BCM) supplies ground to the coil side of the low beam relay. This activates the relay and the relay supplies voltage to the left hand low beam headlamp through the LT LOW BEAM fuse and to the right hand low beam headlamp through the RT LOW BEAM fuse. When high beam headlamps are requested, the body control module (BCM) supplies ground to the coil side of the high beam relay. This activates the relay and the relay supplies voltage to the left hand high beam headlamp through the LT HIGH BEAM fuse and to the right hand high beam headlamp through the RT HIGH BEAM fuse.
Daytime Running Lamps (DRL)
The ambient light sensor is a light-sensitive transistor that varies its voltage signal to the body control module (BCM) in response to changes in the outside (ambient) light level. When the BCM receives this signal the BCM turns ON just the low beam headlamps at reduced intensity for the daytime running lamp (DRL) operation. A resistor wire is used (CKT312) to reduced the voltage which reduces the light intensity for the DRL's function. The ambient light sensor can also turn ON the low beam headlamps and the exterior lamps for automatic lamp control (ALC). Any function or condition that turns ON the headlamps will cancel the DRL operation (this means no reduced voltage to the low beam lights). Thirty seconds after you start the engine with the headlamp switch in the OFF position, the DRL will perform one of two actions
- Illuminate the low beam headlamps at reduced intensity in daylight conditions
- Illuminate the low beam headlamps and exterior park lamps for low light conditions
The DRL operates when the ignition switch is in the RUN position, the parking brake is not set and the transmission is not in the PARK position When these conditions are met and the DRL ambient light sensor indicates daylight conditions the DRL will illuminate
Fog Lamps
With the ignition switch in the ON position and the park lamps or low beam headlights ON, the fog lights will illuminate when the driver presses the fog lamp switch. The FRONT FOG fuse in the underhood fuse block supplies battery positive voltage to the switch side of the FRT FOG relay. When the fog lamp switch is pressed, the body control module (BCM) fog lamp switch input is grounded. The BCM will then energize the FRT FOG relay control circuit. The current flow is now from the FRONT FOG relay to both front fog lamps and to ground. The state of the fog lamps, either ON or OFF, will remain the same until the fog lamp switch is pressed again or the ignition switch is cycled OFF and ON. Fog lamp operation will be cancelled whenever the park lamps, are turned OFF or the high beam headlights have been selected.
Park, Tail and Marker Lamps
The park, tail and marker lamps, including the license lamps, are turned ON when the headlamp switch is placed in the PARK or HEADLAMP position or anytime the headlights are requested. The underhood fuse block supplies battery positive voltage to the PARK LAMP relay switch contacts and coil. When the park lamps are turned ON, the body control module (BCM) energizes the park lamp relay. Current flow is from the PARK LAMP relay through the park lamps LH fuse and park lamps RH fuse to their respective park and marker lamps and to ground.
Perimeter Lighting
When a remote unlock is requested and the vehicle is off, doors locked and a low ambient light is present, then the high beams, park lamps and backup lamps will come on for about 20 seconds or until a door is open, the key is turned to ACC or run or a remote lock actuation.
Remote Keyless Entry Exterior Lamp Illumination
On vehicles with a remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR), when the RCDLR module receives a door unlock command from the remote keyless entry (RKE) transmitter, the RCDLR module will send a class 2 message to the body control module (BCM) indicating that an UNLOCK command has been received. The BCM will then flash the park lamps twice. With all the doors closed and the RKE transmitter is used to lock the doors, the park lamps will flash twice. The park lamps will not flash if the rear compartment is opened using the RKE transmitter.
On vehicles without a RCDLR, when the BCM receives a door unlock command from the RKE transmitter, the BCM will then flash the park lamps twice. With all the doors closed and the RKE transmitter is used to lock the doors, the park lamps will flash twice. The park lamps will not flash if the rear compartment is opened using the RKE transmitter.
Turn Signal Lamps
The body control module (BCM) is responsible for controlling the turn signals and hazard lamps. When the turn signal switch is placed in either the left turn or right turn position, the BCM receives a signal from the turn signal switch. The BCM then sends an on-off voltage signal to either the left or right turn signals and their instrument panel cluster (IPC) indicator. When the hazard switch is pressed, the BCM receives a signal from the hazard switch. The BCM then will send an on-off voltage signal to all the turn signal lamps. All the turn signal lamps will flash including both IPC turn signal indicators.
Stop Lamps
The brake pedal position sensor is used to sense the action of the driver application of the brake pedal. The brake pedal position sensor provides an analog voltage signal that will increase as the brake pedal is applied. The body control module (BCM) provides a low reference signal and a 5 V reference voltage to the brake pedal position sensor. When the variable signal reaches a voltage threshold indicating the brakes have been applied, the BCM will apply battery voltage to the stop lamp control circuit illuminating the left and right stop lamps and the center high mounted stop lamp (CHMSL). The BCM also applies battery voltage to the transmission control module (TCM) and engine control module (ECM) via the brake applied signal circuit.
Backup Lamps
The CHMSL/BKUP fuse in the instrument panel (I/P) fuse block supplies battery positive voltage to the body control module (BCM). When the driver places the gear selector in to the REVERSE position, the powertrain control module (PCM) sends a class 2 message to the BCM. The BCM then applies battery positive voltage to the backup lamp supply voltage circuit. The engine may need to be running for the backup lamps to function.
Inadvertent Power
The body control module (BCM) used in this vehicle controls the lighting system through circuits that enable both the exterior lamp functions of park, head and fog lamps as well as the interior lamps. The BCM opens these enabling circuits shortly after the ignition switch is turned OFF with no lamp switch activity. If the ignition switch is turned to any position other than OFF or if a lamp switch is activated during this period, the timer will reset itself again.
Interior Lighting
The interior lighting consist of lamps that may not be dimmed (Interior Lamps) and lamps that may be dimmed (Interior Lamps Dimming).
Interior Lamps
The first group of lamps are the interior courtesy lamps that may not be dimmed manually, these include
- The dome lamp
- The instrument panel (I/P) compartment lamp
- The I/P courtesy lamps
- The rear compartment lamp
- The roof rail courtesy/reading lamps
- The sunshade vanity mirror lamps
Interior Lamps Features
The interior lamps system features the following functions
- An illuminated entry feature that illuminates the courtesy lamps when entering the vehicle or activating the remote keyless entry system.
- An illuminated exit feature that illuminates the courtesy lamps when the ignition key has been removed from the ignition.
- An inadvertent power feature that supplies voltage to all interior lamps after the ignition is turned OFF. The inadvertent power feature will deactivate all interior lamps after 20 minutes to prevent battery rundown.
- A theater dimming feature that will slowly dim the interior lamps from full brightness to OFF.
- An lamp switch assembly that illuminates the courtesy lamps.
- Individual switches for control of each interior lamp that is not illuminate with the interior lamp switch.
Courtesy/Illuminated Entry Lamps
When the body control module (BCM) is in an active state (awake) it energizes the courtesy lamps supply voltage circuit. The courtesy lamps supply voltage circuit supplies voltage to all of the interior lamps, including the illuminated entry lamps (courtesy lamps). The illuminated entry lamps are turned ON when they receive a battery positive voltage from the courtesy lamp supply voltage circuit of the BCM. When the ignition is in the LOCK position the BCM will apply the courtesy lamp supply voltage circuit under the following conditions
- The door jamb input transitions to an active state (opening a door).
- The use of the remote keyless entry (RKE) to unlock the side doors.
When the courtesy lamps supply voltage circuit and the courtesy lamp low control circuit are active the courtesy/illuminated entry lamps will illuminate. The courtesy lamps/illuminated entry lamps include the following interior lamps
- The dome lamp
- The roof rail courtesy lamps
- The I/P courtesy lamps
When the driver uses the remote function actuator transmitter to unlock the doors, the BCM will illuminate the courtesy lamps for approximately 40 seconds, unless another BCM function causes the lamps to remain active. If the ignition switch is turned to either the RUN or START position the courtesy lamps will turn OFF immediately.
When the door latch switch signal circuit is active with the ignition in the OFF position the BCM will illuminate the courtesy lamps. The courtesy lamps will remain illuminated for approximately 25 seconds, after the door latch switch signal circuit becomes inactive, unless another BCM function causes the lamps to remain active. If the ignition switch is turned to either the RUN or START position the courtesy lamps will turn OFF immediately.
Courtesy/Illuminated Exit
The illuminated exit feature will activate the courtesy lamps when the key IN input of the BCM transitions from an active state to an inactive state (removing the ignition key). When the key is removed from the ignition, the key IN input to the BCM becomes inactive. The BCM will illuminate the courtesy lamps for approximately 25 seconds, unless another BCM function causes the lamps to remain active.
Inadvertent Power Feature
Inadvertent power feature provides a similar function for the interior lamps as a retained accessory power feature. The BCM will energize the courtesy lamps supply voltage circuit when the BCM is in the active state (awake). When the courtesy lamps supply voltage circuit is energized, it supplies voltage to all the interior lights. The BCM will continue to supply voltage to the interior lamps after the ignition is turned OFF so that the interior lamps may be operated.
The inadvertent power feature will also act as battery run down protection by deactivate the courtesy lamps supply voltage circuit after 20 minutes once the BCM becomes inactive, ignition OFF and no BCM input activity.
Theater Dimming
The theater dimming feature that will slowly dim the interior lamps from full brightness to OFF. The following actions will over ride the theater dimming feature causing the courtesy lamps to deactivate immediately if no other BCM function commands the courtesy lamps ON
- A transition from active to inactive of the interior lamps switch, turning OFF the interior lamps switch
- A LOCK command from the remote keyless entry system
- A last door closed locking function, locking and closing all the doors
Courtesy Lamps Manual Operation
The courtesy lamps, may be manually operated by the lamp switch assembly. When the dimmer switch is placed in the DOME position the BCM receives a ground from the courtesy lamp switch signal circuit. Upon receiving the courtesy lamp switch signal the BCM then applies battery positive voltage to the courtesy lamp supply voltage circuit, which illuminates the courtesy lamps. The voltage for all interior lamps is supplied by the courtesy lamp supply voltage circuit of the BCM, whenever the BCM is active. The interior lamp switch will override any BCM operation of the interior lamps, such as entry illumination.
Dome Lamp
The dome lamp is turned ON by the lamp switch assembly or during illuminated entry.
During illuminated entry or when the lamp switch assembly is in the DOME position, the body control module (BCM) wakes up and then energizes the courtesy lamps supply voltage circuit, suppling voltage to all interior lamps.
I/P Compartment Lamp
When the I/P compartment is opened the I/P compartment lamp illuminates, if the courtesy lamps supply voltage circuit of the BCM is activated, BCM awake.
The I/P compartment lamp illuminates when the courtesy lamps supply circuit of the BCM supplies voltage to the I/P compartment lamp and the I/P compartment switch closes, providing a ground path.
I/P Courtesy Lamp
The I/P courtesy lamp is turned ON by the lamp switch assembly or during illuminated entry.
During illuminated entry or when the I/P dimmer switch is DOME the BCM wakes up and then energizes the courtesy lamps supply voltage circuit, suppling voltage to all interior lamps.
Rear Compartment Lamp
When the rear compartment is opened, the rear compartment lamp illuminates.
When the rear compartment is opened, the rear compartment courtesy lamp switch sends a ground signal to the BCM, waking the BCM. When the BCM wakes up it will then energize the courtesy lamps supply voltage circuit, suppling voltage to the rear compartment courtesy lamp. The rear compartment courtesy lamp switch will provide a ground path for the rear compartment courtesy lamp in order to illuminate the lamp.
Roof Rail Courtesy/Reading Lamps
The roof rail courtesy lamps are turned ON by the lamp switch assembly, the individual roof rail courtesy lamp switch or during illuminated entry.
During illuminated entry or when the I/P dimmer switch is ON the BCM wakes up and then energizes the courtesy lamps supply voltage circuit, suppling voltage to all interior lamps.
The roof rail courtesy/reading lamps can be turned ON from the individual roof rail courtesy lamp switch. The BCM supplies voltage through the courtesy lamps supply voltage circuit when the BCM is awake. Manually turning ON the roof rail courtesy lamp switch provides a ground path.
Sunshade Vanity Mirror Lamps
When the vanity mirror cover on the sunshade is opened, the sunshade mirror lamp illuminates.
The sunshade mirror lamps receive voltage from the courtesy lamps supply voltage circuit anytime the BCM is awake. The sunshade illuminated mirror lamps receive ground from their individual switches when the sunshade is open.
Interior Lamps Dimming
The second group of lamps include lamps which may be dimmed. This group uses a combination of class 2 dimming and incandescent lamps.
- The PRNDL lamp
- The door switches and window switches
- The HVAC control head assembly
- The outside rearview mirror switches
- The driver information center (DIC)
- The radio
- The lamp switch assembly
- The steering wheel controls
- The instrument panel cluster (IPC)
- The traction control switch
When the headlamp switch is placed in the PARK position, ground is supplied through the headlamp switch to body control module (BCM). The BCM also applies a voltage reference and a low reference signal to the interior lamp dimmer switch. When the interior lamp switch is varied, the position of the switch is applied through the instrument panel (I/P) dimming control circuit to the BCM. The BCM then applies a voltage to the interior lamps.
The lamps become illuminated when the park lamps are ON. The brightness of all the incandescent lamps is determined by a variable voltage signal from the dimmer switch and sent through the instrument panel lamp supply voltage circuit. The lamps are located in various components, refer to Interior Lights Schematics . The interior backlighting may stay on for a period of time after the ignition switch has been turned off.
Incandescent Dimming
The incandescent lamps become illuminated when the park lamps are on. The brightness of all the incandescent lamps is determined by a variable voltage signal from the dimmer switch and sent through the instrument panel lamp supply voltage circuit. The incandescent lamps are located in various components, refer to Interior Lights Dimming Schematics .
Driver Controls and Modules
The BCM module processes the inputs and the controls. The ambient light sensor supplies the BCM with a signal for daytime conditions or for low light conditions
