VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT

Note. Engine is equipped with hydraulic valve lifters. Adjustment is required only if valve train has been disassembled.

Remove rocker arm covers. Rotate crankshaft until cylinder No. 1 is at TDC of compression stroke. Begin by adjusting exhaust valve of cylinder No. 1. See VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT SEQUENCE table. While trying to rotate push rod with thumb and forefinger, loosen nut on rocker stud until push rod just starts to rotate. This is considered zero lash. Tighten nut 3/4 - 1 1/4 turns (this centers the lifter plunger).

NOTES

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

Note. For reassembly reference, label all electrical connectors, vacuum hoses and fuel lines before removal. Also place mating marks onto engine hood and other major assemblies before removal.

DRAINING & REFILLING COOLING SYSTEM

The draining procedure is first, followed by the refilling/bleeding procedure. The two procedures can be used independantly of each other.

WARNINGTo avoid the danger of being burned, do not remove the coolant recovery reservoir filler cap while the engine and radiator assembly are still hot. Scalding fluid and steam may be blown out under pressure.

Draining the Cooling System

  1. Park the vehicle on level surface. Remove the coolant recovery reservoir filler cap assembly: Slowly rotate cap counterclockwise about 1/4 turn and then stop. Wait until any remaining pressure (indicated by a hissing sound) is relieved. After all hissing ceases, continue to rotate cap assembly counterclockwise until cap is removed.
  2. Open coolant drain valve located in left-hand radiator end tank. Disconnect the battery negative cable assembly. Open heater air bleed valve (36) located just above water pump assembly on the thermostat housing. (Scheme 12) Place a shop towel under the bleed valve to prevent coolant from splashing onto distributor assembly.
  3. Remove both electronic spark control (ESC) knock sensors located on both sides of engine block assembly. Allow system to drain completely.
  4. Store used coolant in a proper fashion, i.e., in a used coolant holding tank. NOTE: NEVER POUR USED COOLANT DOWN THE DRAIN! Ethylene Glycol antifreeze is a very toxic chemical; disposing of it into the sewer system or ground water is both illegal and ecologically unsound!
  5. Close coolant drain valve on radiator. Install ESC knock sensors. Tighten each knock sensor to 14 ft.lbs (19 N.m).

Refilling/Bleeding the Cooling System

WARNINGUnder some conditions, Ethylene Glycol in engine coolant is flammable. To avoid being burned when adding engine coolant, do not spill it on the exhaust system or on hot engine parts.
  1. If not already open, open heater air bleed valve (36) located just above the water pump assembly on the thermostat housing. (Scheme 12) Place a shop towel under the bleed valve to prevent coolant from splashing onto distributor assembly.
  2. Fill cooling system through the coolant recovery reservoir assembly to the "FULL COLD" mark. Use Ethylene Glycol antifreeze meeting GM specification 2025-M to provide required freezing and corrosion protection; at least a 50% solution. For fluid capacity, see the «COOLING SYSTEM APPROXIMATE FLUID CAPACITIES TABLE»(/chevrolet/caprice-impala-ss/1995-1996/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-57l-v8-vin-p).
  3. Add two engine coolant supplement sealant pellets (GM P/N 363462) or equivalent.
  4. Close heater air bleed valve when bubbles disappear and only coolant is visible. Run engine with the coolant recovery reservoir filler cap off until thermostat assembly opens.
  5. Re-open heater air bleed valve. When bubbles disappear and only coolant is visible, close heater air bleed valve. Again, place a shop towel under the bleed valve to prevent coolant from splashing onto distributor assembly.
  6. Fill cooling system through the coolant recovery reservoir until the coolant level is approximately 1 inch (25 mm) above the "FULL COLD" mark.
  7. Install the coolant recovery reservoir filler cap assembly. Inspect for leaks after running engine until normal operating temperature is reached.

Note. The "LOW COOLANT" warning/indicator lamp may come on after this procedure. It can take up to THREE engine heat up/cool down cycles before the light goes out! If the "LOW COOLANT" warning/indicator lamp still does not go out and coolant is above "FULL COLD" mark in reservoir assembly, there is a fault with the circuit. Troubleshoot and repair as necessary.

Note. If at any time the "TEMP" warning/indicator lamp comes on, immediate action is required. Turn off engine and allow vehicle to cool. Do not remove coolant recovery cap at this time.

Valves

Check valves before servicing. Replace valves as necessary. See VALVES & VALVE SPRINGS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. Valve face may be machined.

Valve Seat Correction Angles

If seat is too wide after grinding, use a 20-degree stone to lower or a 70-degree stone to raise seat.

Piston & Rod Assembly

  1. Mark rod and rod cap with matching cylinder number. Before disassembling, mark piston-to-rod position for reassembly reference. Notch or dot on piston top should face front of engine. Piston pin is a press fit.
  2. When measuring, ensure pin bore and piston pin are free of varnish and scuffing. If clearance between the piston and pin exceeds specification, replace the piston and pin as an assembly. See «PISTONS, PINS & RINGS»(/chevrolet/caprice-impala-ss/1995-1996/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-57l-v8-vin-p) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.

Fitting Pistons

Ensure notch or dot on piston top faces front of engine. Check pistons for wear and damage. Replace pistons as necessary. Check piston-to-cylinder bore clearance. If one cylinder needs to be bored, bore all cylinders to same oversize.

Piston Rings

Install marked side of ring toward top of piston. Top compression ring is chrome or molybdenum face. Second compression ring has a tapered face. Oil ring is a 3-piece type. Ensure end gaps are evenly spaced on piston. (Scheme 27)

Note. Rod and main bearings are available in .001" (.03 mm) and .002" (.05) undersize for oil clearance adjustment.

Rod Bearings

Ensure bearing cap bolt holes and mating surfaces are clean and dry. Use connecting rod stud protectors on rod cap bolts. Install inserts in connecting rod and cap. Lubricate bearings and crank pin. Install bearing cap. Tighten rod bearing cap bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

Crankshaft & Main Bearings

  1. If bearing clearance is greater than specification, replace with undersized bearings and recheck bearing clearance using Plastigage. See «CRANKSHAFT, MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS»(/chevrolet/caprice-impala-ss/1995-1996/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-57l-v8-vin-p) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  2. Tighten the main bearing caps finger tight. Pry the crankshaft rearward and then forward to align the rear main bearing thrust surfaces. Retighten the main bearing caps to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/chevrolet/caprice-impala-ss/1995-1996/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-57l-v8-vin-p__torque-specifications) .

Thrust Bearing

Check crankshaft end play by forcing the crankshaft to the extreme forward position. Measure end play at the front of the rear main bearing using a feeler gauge. If end play is not within specification, replace thrust bearing and/or crankshaft. See CRANKSHAFT, MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.

Cylinder Block

Check cylinder bore for wear, taper, out-of-round and piston fit. See CYLINDER BLOCK table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. Cylinders with less than .005" (.13 mm) wear or taper can be honed. Cylinders with more than .005" (.13 mm) wear or taper should be bored to smallest oversize piston which will permit complete resurfacing of all cylinders.

Oil Pressure

With engine at normal operating temperature, oil pressure should be at least 6 psi (0.4 kg/cm 2 ) at 1000 RPM, 18 psi (1.3 kg/cm 2 ) at 2000 RPM and 24 psi (1.7 kg/cm 2 ) at 4000 RPM.

Removal & Disassembly

Remove oil pan. See OIL PAN under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove oil pan baffle (if equipped). Remove oil pump assembly and intermediate shaft. Remove oil pump cover screws, and remove cover. Mark gear teeth for reassembly reference. Remove gears. Remove pressure regulator pin, spring and valve from cover. Remove pick-up screen and pipe from cover only if replacing.

Check oil pump body and gears for cracks, wear and damage. Check oil pump shaft for looseness in housing. Check inside of cover for wear or oil leakage. If excess wear or damage is found, replace oil pump as an assembly. Oil pump specifications are not available from manufacturer.

Reassembly & Installation

Clean parts in solvent. Dry parts using compressed air. To assemble, reverse disassembly procedure. To install, reverse removal procedure.
