DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

When ignition switch is turned to START position, battery voltage is applied to normally open contacts of starter relay. Battery voltage is also applied to starter relay coil through Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch (automatic transaxle) when shift lever is in Park or Neutral or Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) switch (manual transaxle) when clutch pedal is depressed. When voltage is applied to solenoid windings, this creates movement of solenoid plunger and shift lever, causing drive pinion to engage flywheel and close solenoid switch contacts. (Scheme 1) When solenoid switch contacts close, starter motor energizes and cranks the engine. As engine starts, pinion overrun clutch protects armature from excessive speed until ignition switch is opened and plunger return spring disengages pinion.

TROUBLE SHOOTING HINTS

Note. Refer to appropriate wiring diagram to verify wire color and connector terminal identification. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .

Note condition and operation of SECURITY indicator light. If indicator stays on or flashes continuously, see appropriate ANTI-THEFT SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Check starter solenoid terminals and battery grounds. Check for proper installation of aftermarket electronic equipment. Check IGN (50-amp) fuse and STRTR (15-amp) fuse located in underhood junction block. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS . Perform self-diagnostic system test to be certain no trouble codes are stored in PCM memory which may lead to misdiagnosis. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.

STARTER NOISE

CAUTIONNever operate starter for periods of more than 15 seconds. Excessive cranking can cause starter to overheat. Allow starter to cool for at least 2 minutes after each time operated.

Note. Always check flywheel ring gear for signs of damage.

  1. Start engine while observing noise from starter motor. If a noise other than a loud, siren-like "whoop" sound is heard after engine starts, go to next step. If a loud, siren-like "whoop" sound is heard after engine starts, go to step 6 .
  2. If a noise other than a "rumble", "growl" or "knock" sound is heard as starter is coasting to a stop after starting engine, go to next step. If a "rumble", "growl" or "knock" sound is heard as starter is coasting to a stop after starting engine, go to step 4 .
  3. If a noise other than a high-pitched whine is heard while cranking engine, go to next step. If a high-pitched whine is heard while cranking engine, distance between starter pinion and flywheel is too small. Shim starter away from flywheel by adding shims one at a time and rechecking operation. Ensure starter-to-engine bolts are tightened correctly. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1998-2002/remont/starter/#starting-system__torque-specifications) .
  4. Remove starter. See «STARTER»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1998-2002/remont/starter/#starting-system) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Inspect starter motor bushings and clutch gear. If clutch gear shows signs of chipped or milled teeth or starter motor has worn bushings, go to next step. If starter checks okay, go to step 6 .
  5. Replace starter as necessary. During initial starter motor installation, shim(s) are not used. If shim(s) are present, install shim(s) in original location with replacement starter. Ensure starter-to-engine bolts are tightened correctly. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1998-2002/remont/starter/#starting-system__torque-specifications) .
  6. Check flywheel ring gear for chipped, missing or milled teeth. Replace flywheel as necessary. See appropriate AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION REMOVAL or MANUAL TRANSMISSION REMOVAL article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS or MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS. If flywheel checks okay, go to step 5 .

ON-VEHICLE TESTING

SYSTEM TESTS

WARNINGVehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. Before attempting ANY repairs involving steering column, instrument panel or related components, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.

Note. The following tests assume that engine and battery are operating normally and are at operating temperature, battery is charged, there are no engine problems that would cause a no-start condition, and no diagnostic trouble codes are present.

SLOW OR NO CRANK ONLY AFTER EXTENDED PERIODS OF VEHICLE NON-USE

There may be a parasitic load on electrical system. See PARASITIC LOAD EXPLANATION & TEST PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

ENGINE DOES NOT CRANK, STARTER SOLENOID DOES NOT CLICK

  1. Remove starter relay from underhood junction block. See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1998-2002/remont/starter/#starting-system__component-locations) . Using test light connected to battery voltage, probe underhood junction block terminal C6 (Yellow/Black wire). Turn ignition switch to START position while observing test light. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, malfunction is in ANTI-THEFT system. See appropriate ANTI-THEFT SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  2. Using test light connected to ground, probe underhood junction block terminal C4 (Red wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 4 .
  3. Using test light connected to ground, probe underhood junction block terminal B4 (Dark Green wire). On vehicles equipped with automatic transmission, ensure shift lever is in Park or Neutral. On vehicles equipped with manual transmission, ensure clutch pedal is depressed. On all vehicles, turn ignition switch to START position while observing test light. If test light illuminates, go to step 5 . If test light does not illuminate, go to step 6 .
  4. Repair open in Red wire between underhood junction block terminal C4 and splice S183, located in forward lamp harness, several inches away underhood junction block breakout. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1998-2002/remont/starter/#starting-system) . Retest operation.
  5. Install starter relay into underhood junction block. Disconnect Purple wire from starter solenoid "S" terminal. Connect test light between terminal end of Purple wire and ground. On vehicles equipped with automatic transmission, ensure shift lever is in Park or Neutral. On vehicles equipped with manual transmission, ensure clutch pedal is depressed. On all vehicles, turn ignition switch to START position while observing test light. If test light illuminates, go to step 12 . If test light does not illuminate, go to step 9 .
  6. Check for open or poor connection in Dark Green wire between underhood junction block terminal B4 and Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch connector terminal "F" (automatic transmission) or Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) switch connector terminal "B" (manual transmission). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1998-2002/remont/starter/#starting-system) . Repair as necessary and retest operation. If Dark Green wire checks okay, go to next step.
  7. Check for open or poor connection in Purple/White wire between 48-pin connector C200D, located between left kick panel and steering column and Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch connector terminal "E" (automatic transmission) or Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) switch connector terminal "A" (manual transmission). Repair as necessary and retest operation. If Purple/White wire checks okay, go to next step.
  8. On vehicles equipped with automatic transmission, check operation and adjustment of PNP switch. See appropriate AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SERVICING article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. Repair as necessary and retest operation. If PNP switch adjustment and operation are okay, replace PNP switch and retest operation. On vehicles equipped with manual transmission, replace CPP switch and retest operation.
  9. Check for poor connection to starter relay in underhood junction block. Repair as necessary and retest operation. If starter relay connections are okay, go to next step.
  10. Check for open or poor connection in Purple wire between underhood junction block terminal B6 and starter solenoid "S" terminal. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1998-2002/remont/starter/#starting-system) . Repair as necessary and retest operation. If Purple wire checks okay, go to next step.
  11. Replace starter relay and retest operation.
  12. Check for open or high resistance in positive battery cable between battery and starter solenoid. Repair as necessary and retest operation. If positive battery cable checks okay, go to next step.
  13. Replace starter assembly and retest operation. See «STARTER»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1998-2002/remont/starter/#starting-system) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

ENGINE DOES NOT CRANK, SOLENOID CLICKS

  1. Inspect engine and drive belt system for mechanical binding. Repair as necessary. If engine moves freely, go to next step.
  2. Check for high resistance in positive battery cable between battery and starter solenoid (Black wire on 3.8L; Red wire on 5.7L). Repair as necessary and retest operation. If positive battery cable checks okay, go to next step.
  3. Check for high resistance in ground circuit between battery and starter. Repair as necessary and retest operation. If ground circuit checks okay, go to next step.
  4. Check for poor connections at starter solenoid. Repair as necessary and retest operation. If connections to starter solenoid check okay, go to next step.
  5. Replace starter. See «STARTER»(/chevrolet/camaro/iv-1998-2002/remont/starter/#starting-system) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest operation.

PINION CLEARANCE CHECK

Note. Pinion clearance is not adjustable. If clearance is not within specification, replace starter assembly.

  1. Secure starter motor in vise with opening in housing accessible for measurement. Disconnect starter field connector from solenoid terminal "M". Insulate starter field connector. Connect battery negative terminal lead to starter frame. Connect 12 volts to starter solenoid terminal "S". Momentarily touch jumper lead from starter solenoid terminal "M" to starter frame, shifting pinion into cranking position. (Scheme 2)
  2. Push pinion as far as possible away from retainer. Using a feeler gauge, ensure there is.01-.16" (.25-4.06 mm) clearance between pinion and retainer. (Scheme 3)

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

Note. Vehicles are designed for starter mounting without shims. A single shim or double shims may have been added to correct a noise or engagement condition. When installing starter, any previously installed shims should be replaced in original location to ensure proper pinion to flywheel clearance.

Removal (3.8L)

Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Remove starter heat shield. Remove one starter retaining bolt. Remove one starter retaining stud. Disconnect starter solenoid wiring. Remove shims and note arrangement for reassembly (if equipped). Remove starter assembly.

Removal (5.7L)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Remove catalytic converter hanger retaining bolts. Remove catalytic converter hanger. Loosen catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold retaining nuts. Remove catalytic converter-to-exhaust crossover pipe nuts. Slide exhaust crossover pipe rearward off from catalytic converter studs. Slide exhaust crossover pipe out of muffler and set aside.
  2. Remove Connector Positive Assurance (CPA) retainer from left oxygen sensor No. 2 connector. Remove left oxygen sensor No. 2. Remove left side catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold retaining nuts. Remove left side catalytic converter. Remove starter mounting bolts. Lower starter from engine. Disconnect starter solenoid wiring. Remove shims and note arrangement for reassembly (if equipped). Remove starter assembly.

Installation (3.8L & 5.7L)

To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Ensure shims are installed in original location (if equipped).

OVERHAUL

Note. Starter assemblies are not serviceable, and should be replaced as complete units.
