Manual Trans 9 illustrations ~878 words

SERVICE INTERVALS

Check fluid level at 3 month/3000 mile intervals. Draining and refilling is not required, except at time of overhaul or service.

On Corvette, change fluid in overdrive unit every 30,000 miles. On Nova, change fluid in transaxle every 20,000 miles.

CHECKING FLUID LEVEL

Check lubricant level at filler plug hole on side of transmission. Lubricant should be level with bottom of filler plug hole. Add lubricant as necessary to bring to correct level.

Note. On Camaro and Firebird, DO NOT remove reverse shift lever pin of LEFT side of case.

Isuzu & Munci 5-Speed Transaxles

  1. Vehicle should be on level surface. Transaxle fluid should be COLD when checking fluid. Fluid should be at "FULL" mark on dipstick. (Scheme 11) Drain plug is below dipstick tube.
  2. On Fiero equipped with Isuzu transaxle, remove permanent magnet generator on driver's side of case. Fluid level should be between "L" and "H" marks on generator. (Scheme 12)

TRANSMISSION REFILL CAPACITIES

Borg-Warner 77mm Speed

Integral type shift linkage is used, and no adjustment is necessary.

Toyota C51 5-Speed Transaxle (Nova)

Shift cables are fixed length. No adjustment is provided.

Isuzu 76mm 5-Speed Transaxle (Except Fiero)

  1. Disconnect negative batter cable. Shift transaxle into 3rd gear. Remove lock pin at transaxle. (Scheme 14) Install lock pin with tapered end down to lock transaxle into 3rd gear.
  2. Loosen shift cable attaching nuts at transaxle levers. Remove console trim plate. Slide shifter boot up gearshift handle. Remove console.
  3. Install a No. 22 drill bit (5/32") into alignment hole on side of shifter assembly. Align hole in gearshift lever assembly with slot in shifter plate and install a 3/16" drill bit.
  4. Tighten cable attaching nuts at transaxle shift levers. Remove drill bits. Remove lock pin and install with tapered end up. Install console. Ensure transaxle shifts correctly.

Isuzu 76mm 5-Speed (Transaxle) (Fiero)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable and place transaxle in 1st gear. Loosen valve attaching nuts at transaxle shift levers. (Scheme 15)
  2. Remove center console for access to gearshift lever mechanism. Holding gearshift lever against left hand stop in 1st gear, install alignment pins.
  3. Remove free play from transaxle by rotating lever "B" in direction of arrow while tightening cable attachment nut to 20 ft.lbs. (27 N.m). DO NOT allow shift lever to move when tightening nut. (Scheme 15), View "A"
  4. Tighten cable "A" does not have to be rotated. Ensure reverse inhibit cam is against roller. Align if necessary.
  5. Remove alignment pins. Install console. When moving gearshift lever from 1st to 2nd gear, of 2nd to 1st gear, cable "B" should not move.

Muncie 76mm 5-Speed Transaxle (Fiero)

  1. Only shift cable is adjustable. DO NOT adjust select cable. To adjust shift cable, shift transaxle into 3rd gear. Loosen shift cable attaching nut at transaxle ball stud. (Scheme 17)
  2. Ensure transaxle is in 3rd gear. Remove gearshift knob and trim plates covering gearshift mechanism. Pin gearshift mechanism into 3rd gear position.
  3. Tighten shift cable attaching nut to 18 ft. lbs. (25 N.m.). Install trim.

Doug Nash 83mm 4-Speed Overdrive (Corvette)

1)Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove left seat. If equipped with power seats, remove electrical leads. Remove shift knob, console cover and shifter cover. Loosen lock nuts at shift rod swivels. Place shift levers in Neutral at transmission. Rods should pass freely through swivels. (Scheme 18)

2) Move gearshift lever into neutral detent. Align control assembly levers. Insert alignment gauge pin into lever adjustment slot. Tighten lock nuts at shift rod swivels at SAME TIME. Remove locating gauge pin.

3) After adjustments have been made, centerlines of shift levers must be aligns to each other to provide free crossover motion. Check transmission shift operation. Readjust as necessary. Reinstall interior in vehicle.
